I like continuing to hear information about the next generation of consoles. Helps me understand what they are truly capable of.

Ricegum1524d ago

Same. I'm actually very interested in both consoles. I think Xbox Series X is going to make some great moves this gen, and I'm sure Sony won't disappoint.

It's going to be an expensive time.

Tech51524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

I watch digital foundry for my tech videos. every bit of detail is in full view.
can't wait to see some more footage shown.

Ausbo1524d ago

These next consoles are finally going to match up to high end PCs. It’s exciting. Can’t wait to get both this fall (hopefully)

crazyCoconuts1524d ago

PR: make sure to say "consistent sustained performance" to start setting expectations that PS5 won't have that because of their boost clocks. Oh and save this video for the same day Sony has something good to say about PS5.

DaDrunkenJester1524d ago

This Inside Xbox was scheduled days ago and likely filmed a few weeks ago. It's more like Sony released DualSense info 15 minutes before the publicly scheduled Inside Xbox...

crazyCoconuts1524d ago

that's true on the timing comment. my bad you're right

timotim1524d ago

When Cerny stood up on that virtual stage and spent so much time talking about SSD and 3D audio and why he prefers faster clocks on the GPU...even specifically mentioning name dropping Dolby Atoms and saying how it could only do 32 channels of audio (even though he was wrong)...do you think that was all just random? Do you not understand that their was a level of PR involved in that?

ApocalypseShadow1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

I do understand that he's a developer and a system architect. And knows more about what PS5 can do than armchairs.

It's good Microsoft is speaking up about their tech. But they had to compete against Sony's dominance. Can't just let Sony run them over again for a 4th time.

timotim1524d ago

yeah yeah yeah, hardware sales, got it.

1524d ago
crazyCoconuts1524d ago

@timotim, yea, i do. this was an obvious rebuttal to that presentation in which points they brought up and how they did it, so i'm just calling it out. I agree that Cerny spent a lot of time defending the smaller GPU and that's PR too

ApocalypseShadow1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

Yeah yeah yeah. Phil's talking like he wants to sell more hardware and being a hypocrite with his words.

Yeah yeah yeah. Did you need to see Morgan fells links again where all the things that didn't matter to Phil are starting to matter to him again and his fans? Fancy that.

Would you have rather have seen me use Sony's games this gen they used to dominate Microsoft instead? I didn't need to use hardware. I can even use PSVR against the non existent "high fidelity VR" if you like.

UltraNova1524d ago

"yeah yeah yeah, hardware sales, got it."

You forgot software sales, market share and brand popularity there...

Unspoken1523d ago

Some, not all, Sony fans are blind. Very difficult to view anything other than a positive light on the gaming machine of choice.

That messaging started before now. Remember, when MS invited DF out to do their X deep dive? They repeatedly pushed locked clocks to the DF guys.

Then they allow DF to release their preview a couple of days before Cerny's talk.

It was planned PR and shows that MS knew exactly what Sony had going on in the PS5. I don't know who is responsible for the type of PR that we're seeing from MS now, but I assume it is not the same as 2013 because they're doing a much better job.

OB1Biker1524d ago

Exactly they are doing a good job with the marketting. The reveal itself was a full commercial in the middle of GA.
I think Sony is more interested in facts than buzz words people easily catch.

1524d ago
XabiDaChosenOne1524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

Alot of this information is a bit redundant, but I did learn a bit more about the velocity architecture...its just a buzz word as I figured. All it comprises of is the Hardware decompression block, the SSD and Directx.

jukins1524d ago

Shhh the xbots believe its special

rlow11524d ago

I'll raise you one playbot.......I think we have parity. Mission accomplished......lol

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH1524d ago

It’s about as special as someone still calling people Xbots

NeoGamer2321524d ago (Edited 1524d ago )

LOL....

All it comprises is, "Hardware decompression block, the SSD and Directx".

So this is all around the performance of the SSD. the hardware decompression is there to more quickly then software decompress data, the SSD is typical speeds of most SSDs today, and the DirectX changes are to add SSD low level APIs to assist in giving performance to large open world games, etc.

Guess if that isn't important then Sony's high speed I/O/SSD isn't that important either because they are both targeting the same things which is getting data from SSD drives to the games as quickly as possible. There have been a bunch of articles talking this up as a game changer, yet now you are trying to discount it. I smell a bunch of fish.

XabiDaChosenOne1524d ago

I know what the individual parts do and no, I'm not downplaying anything. Just a reality check for those that were parroting the term to imply its some sort of "secret sauce".
"There have been a bunch of articles talking this up as a game changer"

And I doubt you read any of them, probably just read the title than proceeded to parrot.

Unspoken1523d ago

Who is saying this? You are the first to rehash it like it's not understood what the technology is. I mean it's not quite the magic sauce Cerny was selling in bottles.

https://www.techhive.com/ar...

DerfDerf1524d ago

You're an idiot if you think that's all it is.

XabiDaChosenOne1524d ago

Just repeating what I heard in the video buddy, no need to get sensitive.

rainslacker1523d ago

It's really just the pr term for the same thing Sony is doing. People like pr terms. Means they can say it's better without really understanding it. Sony should really work on making better pr terminology, because they keep getting accused of not being clear by actually explaining in technical terms.

Perfect Dark and Gears and the game with the girl and the huge croc

Eonjay9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

That last article where everyone is having a baby over a showcase is ridiculous because the Xbox showcase was really a multiplat showcase...

MrBaskerville8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

@Eonjay

I think people are just happy that they gave us something to be excited about. It being multiplatform stuff makes it even easier to rejoice as everyone gets to enjoy it. This show was really what Summerfest should have been, just with less of an xbox focus obviously.

These shows are fun to watch because we get to be excited about new games.

With that said, I imagine Perfect Dark, South of Midnight and perhaps state of decay 1-3 would be possible candidates for ps5. Doom might also be a given. They didn't really try to hammer home its exclusivity.

Eonjay8h ago

@MrBaskerville

Totally agree. I did enjoy SGF though unlike the majority. My personal taste is more eclectic than most. I found stuff at each show to enjoy.

Cacabunga6h ago

Eon

Come on man, yes it’s multi but as a PS5 and switch owner i enjoyed the show yesterday far more than i did with State of Play.
Most announcements came from nowhere to me, and MGS was a massive surprise to finally see some gameplay.
I’m excited to play some of the games on PS5 one day!

Like i said earlier credit where credit is due.

CobraKai3h ago

@Eon
That’s something i have to get used to. I have to see it more like when Ubisoft does their showcase vs Days of Play or Nintendo Direct.

I wished some of these games stayed exclusive. Make it seem like my Series X was a more worthwhile purchase. I use it more for backwards compatibility now so it’s not entirely bad.

Elder Scrolls 6 for PS5, please. Also I'd like the Forza franchise, I owned all four of the OG motorsport titles and FM4 is still one of, if not my favourite racing game ever.

RaiderNation8h ago

The two Ori games as well. I have a feeling those will get announced too.

italiangamer13h ago

Satya Nadella wants that PlayStation's money, Phil Spinster now is as relevant as MySpace

purple10112h ago

Phil Spencer (February 15th 2024):

"Looking forward so 4 games no promise beyond that, so if you're on those other platforms and you see these four games coming please don't take it as some signal that everything is coming, it's not."

Phill Spencer (June 9th 2024)

'Our commitment to our Xbox customers is you're going to get the opportunity to buy or subscribe to the game, we're going to support the game on other screens. And you are going to see more of our games on more platforms and we just see that as benefit that the franchises we're building and we see that from players and the players love to be able to play'

Jingsing12h ago

I won't be buying any Xbox games anyway, Not going to subsidize their vision of changing gaming industry into streaming everything via a netflix subscription and they are the only choice. Remember when it comes to Microsoft "It's us or no one" You can't complain after they have taken over either.

Shane Kim11h ago

Especially when they "give" it to Xbox users and expect playstation users to pay full price for it. Like second class citizens.

Ironmike7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

U won't be missed

neomahi10h ago

So, the benefit of having an Xbox is the option of a subscription service that's more like a buffet and not a deluxe plate. By staying loyal to Xbox means day 1 "free" games of your choice. Xbox is a service.

If rumors are true Xbox is going the 3DO route, Xbox is basically a PC. I mean, since PlayStation caved and started using off the shelf parts to "make it easier on developers", which is a croc as were how far into this console generation and the only devs to really support PS5, kind of, is Insomniac, San Diego, and Santa Monica and we've seen nothing from other devs. PS4 was supposed to be easier so PS5 would be even easier, right? But what've we really seen from Sony first party when it comes to PS5 games? Nothing, they're all still possible on PS4. Xbox? Same thing. Hi-Fi Rush was possible on at least Xbox One X (another lie from Xbox with No one gets left behind). Wow

MrBaskerville8h ago

The original comment still stands, as long as they withold one or two series of games on xbox. Most could come but that still wouldn't mean that you could expect every game to arrive.

I suspect they want people to speculate, because then you don't know whether you should wait for a ps5 port or buy an xbox. Every game is Schroedingers exclusive.

Eonjay7h ago

The interpretation of his first comment is not to expect more than these 4 games. The interpretation of the second comment is not to expect any game to be exclusive to Xbox.

His communication is all over the place. The fact that we can't decipher what he means is what people are complaing about. He should simply say, games are coming to PlayStation but we don't have a set policy that applies to all titles. Sometimes less is more.

Crows907h ago

Well seeing as most Xbox games aren't worth it then it's probably fine

ChasterMies3h ago

You can go back further to last year’s Kinda Funny interview with Phil. Microsoft has been slowly getting the Xbox user base ready for this. It’s like the parable about putting a frog into a pot of water and slowly turning up the heat. We will be at boiling when Halo comes to PlayStation.

gold_drake3h ago

thats what i mean when i say hes a big bullshitter, girl doesnt rly know what hes talking about.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 3h ago
-Foxtrot12h ago

There’s this small part of me which wants to think that the reason for Sony being so calm lately, especially after Microsoft’s showcase, is because they know this themselves, and they could know more than what’s being said publicly.

neomahi10h ago

But, Lego Horizon is on the Switch. Why is Nintendo the only comfortable one here. They're not even on PC

Extermin8or3_9h ago

Stupid take. The Lego game has been made by a Lego studio with advice on the IP from guerilla games. So part of the negotiations/requirements to make it happen will clearly have been done kind of multiplatform release.

LucasRuinedChildhood5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

That Lego game definitely exists to get kids to want to buy the proper Horizon games on PS5/PS4 (plus the multiplayer game). It's basically a giant advertisement. And kids love the Switch.

gold_drake3h ago

nintendo is comfortable because their first party games sell in the tens of millions.

Extermin8or3_9h ago

They definitely know more than is being said.

italiangamer8h ago

Sony gives them the PS5's development kit so they know exactly which studios are making games for their consoles, or at least they can make an estimate based on the number of kits requested.

People just loves to talk but in a couple of days this showcase will be already forgotten, and by the way 90% of the stuff shown is multiplatform.

truthBombs10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

It seems the idea is to have other platforms(PS and PC) offset the cost of game pass.

Xbox users get the games on game pass while others pay full price.

Gamepass seems to be Xbox's idea of "exclusive".

These guys are so inconsistent with their messaging. It's difficult to know exactly what they want to do with their games. I've stopped caring. I just focus on the games.

Mark Cerny: When making consoles, we're not trying to build low-cost PCs

PlayStation legend Mark Cerny discusses PS5, the challenges of making consoles, and his 42-year games industry career

gamesindustry.biz
darthv723d ago

Well... they used to design their own chips. Emotion Engine, Cell, RSX... when they switched to using X86 based chips is now more akin to low-mid cost PCs than before. It may not look like a PC but it pretty much is one. I'd bet it could do productivity stuff just fine if they allowed it to.

Cockney3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I think series consoles are closer to pc than playstation seeing as they used the full suite of rdna 2 functions, didn't Sony strip a lot of that away to streamline their machine to be games focused? Its probably lacking in the office and productivity department, don't ask me what their custom chip does or doesn't do I just remember reading a lot about at the time, "rdna 1.5" was the call and yet what we see is pretty much level pegging as far as games go

GamerRN2d ago

Actually, stripping that away doesn't streamline, it hinders. Those features are actually helpful for gaming.

And they didn't strip them out, they just didn't work closely enough to be able to use them all since specs weren't finalized. Microsoft took an inside line on that one.

The reason why things are equal is because Xbox rarely has games designed on their box, they are usually designed on PS5 and ported over. So Xbox loses the power edge it has to making up the poor optimization.

It's ok, I think the lesson is you have to have a significant increase in power of 30 percent or more to be noticeable. And you have to sell enough to become the lead console for development otherwise you lose that power.

Einhander19722d ago

@GamerRN

PS5 outperforms series x because it uses custom chips to process things that on xbox need to be done by the GPU/CPU.

Things like Tempest Audio, and it's custom compression chip for SSD as well as having a separate chip for upscaling using checkerboard and presumably FSR runs off it as well.

OlderGamer172d ago

O please stop the myth that the seriesX mythe is the only console that is using the "the full suite or Rdna2" is already debunked al long time ago.

Number1TailzFan2d ago

The consoles use video ram as system ram as well since it's all shared, so nah.

2d ago
Christopher2d ago

You should probably read the whole quote and not just go based on the title.

darthv722d ago

I have read it... I dont think anyone can build a PC that equates to the performance of a PS5/Series X for anywhere close to their selling point. Not for a while at least.

And my comment about them switching from custom chips to more PC related just adds to that fact. whether people want to believe it or not... Sony has built a low cost (not spec, there is a difference) PC.

neutralgamer19922d ago (Edited 2d ago )

We need better games on these consoles. This generation has been such a huge letdown so far. Moving forward these current consoles will be supported even when newer Playstation and Xbox are in the market. AAA games have been so expensive to make and it seems fun is taken out of games and loot boxes take their place. Try playing a NBA 2k game it's like a casino with slot machines

just_looken2d ago

The cost of making these games is a scam

Nba 2k19 to 2k14 its like madden the budget to make went stupid high but the fundamental of the game and the game modes never changed.

Anything now even basic intersection construction is tens of millions but pre coivid few hundred grand.

2018 here is $400 landscaping now here is the pink slip to my car.

I swear the cost of everything is the same but there taking of that huge profit top for there own pockets.

Einhander19722d ago

The PS5 is incredibly customized.

The SSD, the Tempest Audio, the APU itself is a mix of cross generation AMD hardware in order to be more optimized for gaming and cost efficient.

The PS5 Pro also has features from cross generation AMD hardware with RT features from RDNA 4 plus it's own custom upscaler PSSR.

PlayStation 5 Pro features next-gen RDNA 4-based ray tracing engine, allows 2-3x faster RT
https://www.tweaktown.com/n...

PlayStation still uses custom designed hardware.

darthv722d ago

honestly... I dont know why some are taking offense to it being called a low cost PC. It really is... and low cost is a good thing. the article did not say low performance PC... that is totally different.

Einhander19722d ago

I'm saying they still are designing their own chips, they just use AMD templates.

The PS5 APU has features from RDNA 1 2 and 3, and the PS5 Pro adds features from RDNA 4, and the CPU is the same with it own customized features.

Then all of that is paired with other custom chips.

just_looken2d ago

What you all said my rig in my bedroom can do it no issues

That plastic box has a 2020 cpu with the pro using a 2021 6700

The custom is do to them being dirt cheap with a 2 prong power supply so they made a cpu/gpu combo chip aka apu.

Get a amd laptop with there new mobile chips get the same performance.

VincentVanBro2d ago

You’re right but downvoted for some reason.

just_looken2d ago

Its this site even the head admin banned me for awhile being but hurt over my "anti" sony comments.

n4g is pro sony nothing sony will ever do can change that.

Pyrofire952d ago (Edited 2d ago )

When you only look at the big flagship chips that seems true, but there's a lot going on in a modern console that takes advantage of being a dedicated kit. The various elements put into how the pipelines are connected shape the direction of games. End to end decryption and data streaming is something big that PC can only kind of do and with less certainty for example. Dedicated audio chip that rivals the main CPU in the PS4 is a big paradigm shift, devs used to fight for cores and audio was often last priority, whereas in traditional PC design the main CPU does both of those jobs of processing audio and decryption, while also performing all the other CPU based tasks.
It's not the custom silicon that used to be what made consoles but there's a lot more to consoles now. Data storage was not even a consideration and almost no RAM was on old consoles. Now there needs to be an enormous amount of SSD storage, and RAM to make these games tick with how much is demanded from them.

just_looken2d ago

@darth

Your comment show how many sony blindboys are on here

You are 100% correct but to add on the gamecube-ps3 also had a gpu/cpu combo back in the day unlike modern consoles that are just glorified tablets using apu/igpu's.

I miss the ps3 era start of ps4 era that sony was awesome

MIDGETonSTILTS173d ago

Yah, hence the majority of the PS5’s hardware investment going towards an SSD instead of a GPU.

There are countless custom pc gaming rigs out there, and I bet none of them took an SSD-centric approach to their design, like the ps5 did.

just_looken2d ago

LMAO wow sony blind boy's are mad in love

That is called direct storage windows 10 has had that for over 5 year's every computer with a nvme based ssd has had that tech for years.

https://www.thewindowsclub....

The ps6 will then have this new amazing tech you all will go crazy over resize bar
https://www.howtogeek.com/8...

But that tech has been out for 2 years all 40series gpu's intel gpus and the new amd cards have that tech.

There is nothing a ps5 can do over a 4+ year old computer 2019 rig want resize bar? get a cheap amd/intel card for half the cost of a ps5.

MIDGETonSTILTS172d ago

Clearly you did not watch Cerny’s first ps5 breakdown, so you don’t appreciate EVERYthing Cerny did to leverage their extremely fast SSD.

bigfish3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I can see where he’s coming from re ps5 not just being a box with parts like a pc. They must also spend an awful lot on r & d just to design the thing so it has aesthetic appeal and typical Japanese with some sort of Philosopy behind the design. Would also think other factors around the custom airflow and the like would cost a lot given that it’s not a standard box shape

gold_drake2d ago

true, but the alternative is, relatively, a expensive ordeal.
unless you dont game at all ha.

mkis0072d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Just spent 2000k on a 4070ti super 7800x3d 1440p gaming pc. Honestly consoles will never be replaced at this wide a gap in price. I plan to get a ps5 pro too.

just_looken2d ago

@mk

You waisted 2 grand you mean

At 1440p a amd4 chipset with a 5600x3d combined with a 6750xt even a 6800 can push 1440p just a much for half the cost or less used/new and or sales.

I have a 75hhz monitor in my bedroom 1440p playing games maxed out spent around 1200cad but aio 5800x3d 32gb of ram and a 6750xt 28 or 30 inch monitor.

Every time i hear pc so expensive i just laugh you can spend less than $500 buy a used ebay rig fix it up or a office pc toss in a cheap low profile card.

Pyrofire952d ago

If you look into the hardware beyond just the CPU and GPU things start to look different, and there's plenty beyond just those two parts, those two parts even are modified to their own design in some degree.
