PlayStation 5: Will the PS5 be worth getting at launch?

I waited it out for the first 3 years, I'm debating on doing that again since there will still be games coming for the PS4 after the PS5 releases. Unless something really compels me like GT7 or GoW2 not long after launch.

Considering the PS5 will be back compatible and PS4 games rumoured to be enhanced on it, that's more than enough reason for me to get at launch.

With the success of the ps1,ps2,ps3 and ps4 I would say its definitely worth getting day one. I think having track record of playstation being the best console every generation would make the ps5 the best choice next generation

Bought PS4 at launch and buy most consoles at launch but in no rush for ps5 myself who knows in 12 months tho. Can be worth waiting sometimes Vita was defo one for me got it before they changed the screens and as for Xbox this gen S was purchased 4 months later it was being sent on its way, absolutely piss poor. Can’t see PS5 being in that situation a year down the line tho let alone in the middle of a gen like S was worse case I’ll have my PS4 backlog to play.

It's not wasted money if you make use of it. The tech in these consoles was under-powered at release, and it's old as hell today. It can be a pain moving between PC and PS4, even with little things like UI navigation and loading. Thankfully there's a huge performance boost coming. I can't wait to play the games yet to release on better hardware.

If they support the PS4 pro for a while then I would just wait a year or two for the price to drop, unless they're going to stop releasing their exclusives on the PS4. Either way waiting never hurt anyone.

The ps5 will have backwards compatibility so now it’s safe to buy at launch.

No console is "worth it" in the first year at least as most games are cross gen and the new gen is finding its feet. Also the kinks get ironed out during that time.

I usually wait a year to buy in, by then a lot of the kinks are worked out and there's a good amount of games to pick from. This time however, PS5s Backwards Compatibility makes me really want to go for it day 1

I usually can’t wait a year but gonna prob try wait until a limited edition model I like drops. No rush PS4 backlog is massive and I’ll only end up upgrading my launch model so gonna try wait it out. Can’t see the launch games will be that EPIC but I guess we shall see, defo not buying Xbox 2? Scarlett next gen on day1 that I’ll be more than happy to wait it out for a selection of top notch games.

Can't even imagine what that new controller will do for new VR games or games updated with a patch for PS4 VR games.

Basically buying a console to play PS4 games and wait for some top notch ps5 games then the PS4 pro will do me. Same issue I had with Xbox and their BC great if you not been playing those games the entire previous gen anyway last Gen I was majority 360 so when xbox1 has no games but says yeah but you can play your 360 games... yeah I just spent 8-9 years playing them I’m good.
PS4 not been out that long but got a massive backlog of games to clear don’t think 12 months is enough for me haha. Happy wait this one out tho won’t purchase a ps5 just to play my PS4 games tho that’s a bonus sure but not the main reason I’d get a ps5. Best bonus is won’t be paying £40/50 for poor average launch games and waiting for the 6-12 months for the quality games to start dropping ;)

Since I didn't buy the Pro, that money will go to PS5. The fact that I've mostly bought first party games and not EA, Activision, Ubisoft, etc, I don't have a lot of regular games. I have more Indie games because they took more risks that AAA developers won't.

If VR developers have a Dev Kit, we're looking at possibly faster load times, better looks from updates to textures, resolution, frame rates can be increased, increased anti aliasing. I expect PS5 launch games to impress. They have to have something to push the system to sell. So, I'm not worried about regular games as much.

But VR? That's where improvements are needed. Even PSVR being 4-5 years old by then will be like new because it's getting it's power from PS5. That's where my interests lie.

I barely have a back catalog. Maybe 4 games I haven't played yet because VR showed up like Detroit and Until Dawn. Everything else I've played often and finished except Spider-Man. Still got to do the the dlc stuff that I haven't started though.

Every VR game I bought I've played. Not one game in back catalog and I got over 40. I don't buy games just to buy them unless I'm going to play them.

Plus games are free to play because of Plus. But I've only played maybe 2. A puzzle game and Bro Force that reminds me of the old days like Ikari Warriors, Contra, Midnight Resistance, Guerilla War, etc. I add them but don't download them. They don't hold as much value to me because I didn't buy them. I can play them at any time. Or not at all. I will say I need to play Grim Fandango and see if it's like the old PC version.

I save money by buying less than when I was younger and wanted to play lots of SNES, Genesis and Turbo games. I have responsibilities now. And one system is enough instead of three. So why not the best for gamers like me who grew up in Atari and Nintendo but need something more than Switch.

It doesn't make sense for Sony to put two versions out at launch and make one more powerful than the other. Maybe 3 years later in 2023 and launch a Pro. But not at launch. And PSVR 2 summer or late 2021.

Everyone gets a 4K Blu-ray player with 100 gig+ discs that actually benefits games. Not like Microsoft did it. Because none of their games take advantage of the ultra Blu-ray disc.

Everyone gets a new controller. And Sony was smart not to release it for Pro only which would upset base owners like me.

Every gamer gets the same games and every developer programs for one system that they can try to push to the limit.

One price for everybody. Which I think will be $499. I think Sony knows core gamers want them to go all out and will be the first to buy the system. Casuals don't care day one. Only core gamers. So, have a price that is backed by the tech they are putting in it.

Wish I could say the same. I can't resist a great sale. I have several games I got at $20, $30, and less than $20 that ended up $10 to $20 more half a year to 2 years later? I buy them because they are on sale in the hope I can play them now if life does not get in the way. I like knowing that I could have had I been able to at the time. I don't by $60 dollar games unless it is a collection for a series with 4 or 5 games. Probably haven't bought a $60.00 game since 2010.

I agree, BC is great for a good number of reasons and it's hard to argue or not being a feature to have.

The most important part for BC imo are the free games that can be offered through PS+ and a bigger catalog for downloadable titles being available for PSnow.

I said something similar in the past but if Sony can have this then the PS5 will be the best console to have.

I got ps2/ps3/PS4 all on launch Xbox 360 was month or so after due to stock issues... ps2 was actually a week or 2 late due to major stock issues. GameCube/wii/wii u 3ds switch all day 1.
Vita I waited it out and xbox1 I waited it out and regretted it when I played the exclusives and was left waiting for more games to drop, Nah still nothing great happened on Xbox so defo only ps5 interested in but no rush myself. Still think could be some great games for PS4 coming yet. Look at ps2 and GOW1/2 and ps3 with gran turismo all in the last year or so of the console ;)
Suppose we got death stranding this year and last of us for early next year still think could be another banger around the corner ;) specially as will be BC with PS5 ;)

If your about the best hardware top resolutions currently available for consoles sure if your waiting for quality games prob not day1 launch games are normally always averages less your Nintendo and drop classics like super Mario world of Zelda BOTW Both 9-10/10 games on day1... knack? Nintendo delayed BOTW from 2015 to 2017 in order to sell the Switch (and put out 0 first-party games in 2016). God help us if other companies took Nintendo's stance of screwing over existing customers in order to sell the next console.

You'll be able to play The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, and Dreams - all 2020 games - at launch on PS5.

I only bought the ps3 at launch. however, i got the most value that way before they took out stuff so yeah sometimes it pays to buy the launch models. I'm planning on waiting until there's a deal if i can but I don't know how well i can stick to that plan if they launch horizon zero dawn 2 or something like that with it.

I bought into last gen a few months in both Xbox 360 and ps3. This gen I waited about 1 year and a half. It really depends on what games are available and if I’m interested in playing them. My rule is that at least 3 games have to be available or upcoming for me to buy in-or a really good special edition bundle like the Smash Bros. Switch.

Great move with the PS4 backwards compatibility, though I assume it’s going to be emulated. Hopefully it’s a great emulation. Last thing you want is increased input lag, for PS4 games, because of it.

I pre-order systems I want at launch because I can pay them off gradually so that when launch day comes I just have to go in and pick up my system. I don't even care at that point if I have to stick mostly with my current system for a bit while the library for the new one slowly builds up, and I laugh a little at all the crying I hear from other early adopters who were expecting the moon. Besides, I know the next PlayStation will be a worthwhile investment for me when all is said and done, as every PlayStation before it was.

I think Sony has eliminated most reasons not to get the PS5 at launch... the only set back is faults in the hardware which could happen to any console launch.
Sometimes people want special edition consoles or wait for the potential mid gen upgrade. Since the PS5 is backwards compatible I will most likely get one at launch. I’m interested in what games they will have in the launch window. I know one thing I am not getting a barebones NBA2k that strips away all the modes just to sell it to us next year 😂.

No, it's almost never worth picking up a new console on launch day, companies always gouge early adopters.

Far better to wait a full year for them to have ironed out any hardware glitches, maybe drop the price and have a fuller line-up of games to enjoy.

Above all, by waiting a year (just one!) you'll be able to figure out which of the major platforms has taken the lead in the new gen's console war so you'll be better able to back the winning horse.

I'll be buying a graphics card upgrade instead. Most consoles are disappointing at launch anyway. Not to mention, when you look back at the PS4's first 2 years, there were litterally no good games. It was only after Bloodborne released, that they started to bring their real product to market.
