Bethesda Has Harsh Words For Sony Over PlayStation's Cross-Play

On this week's dumpster fire edition of The Trophy Room: A PlayStation Podcast, hosts Joseph and Kyle talk about say Bethesda has harsh words for Sony. Even going far enough to say that games like Elder Scrolls: Legends wont be on PlayStation unless Sony changes their ways on Cross-play and cross-progression. Bethesda, seemingly dropping single player games like Dishonored, for a multiplayer focus. TimeSplitters is hopefully alive again, and in the arms on THQ Nordic. Doom Eternal gets us hyped, yet slightly worried. Lastly, the gang talks about their thoughts on the Latest Red Dead Redemption news!

I am with Bethesda, why not make cross-play a thing? I understand Sony's stance, but if enough people are against their stance we will get crossplay. It is a shame that I want to play a free game with my friends, but have to pony up hundreds.

Edit: its not just that either, friends like Halo so they got an Xbox, I enjoy steam so i have PC, other guy enjoys Turismo so he got a PS4... One of my buddies has a Switch, but idk if that supports crossplay. Let us play together while your on top Sony, don't wait until you fall again to make huge changes (ps3).

Excellent perspective on the cross-play argument and I can relate. I play Fortnite on PS4 and Xbox One, because I have friends on each console and I like playing with ALL my friends, not just some of them. So I buy 2 BattlePasses every season, doing twice as many challenges just to keep up with my friends.

Of course, people who don't have this problem, who are happy with what friends they have on their system of choice won't care, nor even consider their own situation could change some day and they may end up in a similar situation, which is why it's smart to fight for cross-play NOW while it's a hot subject instead of later.

He was pointing out that some of his friends are on one console because of exclusives, while other friends are on another console because of it's exclusives. And that he would have to buy both consoles in order to play with all his friends; particularly in multiplatform games.

If enough people were against their stance, sales would have suffered and prompted Sony to react. That has yet to happen, and i think as long as they continue to make great games and offer great content on their consoles, they probably won't ever need to.

I cannot speak for everyone, but i really don't care about cross play. I get why people want it, but it's such a nonissue in my opinion. I had zero expectations of it happening on any platform. It's cool to see it happening, but as I've said in another comments section, I feel it is a feature people will request and rarely use. I also think it's far more complicated for Sony; PS4 shares quite a bit of its library with Xbox One. I'm not sure what kind of demand that much intersectionality will place on the network(s), but I expect that there will be demands and pressure on developers to take advantage of this and maintain server activity. I'm not sure this is rightly feasible, to be honest. I imagine cross play with Switch should be manageable. In that case, Sony can do it, but again, not something i would take advantage of. If you do, more power to you, but like I said, i doubt it'll be as popular as critics may suggest.

Fallout 3 and NV didn't have multiplayer.

Oblivion and Skyrim didn't have multiplayer.

yeah, but they didn't make a fuss about cross play with Elder Scrolls online, which released well before MS decided to get on board.

The reason it likely didn't was because it was on Xbox as well, and unlike FFXIV where they kept it off Xbox because it would have been difficult to manage the separation of the user bases, they just kept every platform for itself.

So where were they for that game, which likely would have benefited much more for being cross play with PC than their Fallout games, even the MP focused one. Or was that Sony's fault too, despite releasing 2 years prior to Phil ever having the words cross play cross his lips.

I think Bethesda didn't make a fuss about it because at the time of TESO release, or pre-launch marketing, there was still some belief from the publishers who loved MS that MS would actually have an exceptional generation and stand toe to toe, or even outdo Sony.

So, when they come out now saying how Sony is all bad, and it'll be a problem for Sony, its kind of hard to take them seriously when they haven't been the paradigms of fighting for the feature until it became convenient for MS.

I'm saying I can't take them seriously because they spent most of last gen not having much good to say about Sony. They act like this is a big deal now, yet didn't bat an eye over trying to get it when they made ESO. And most of all, i'd say I don't take them seriously, because in no stretch of the imagination do I see them forgoing releasing their games on Sony's platform because of this issue. The only reason they might do that is if MS wrote them a rather sizable check.

With the recent comment, they didn't exactly make their case why it would be dire for Sony to not acquiesce on this issue.

When is an appropriate time to take someone serious? I'd say its when they stop posturing, and actually stand behind their convictions they seem to hold important. Bethesda needs to fix its buggy games before they worry about bringing platforms together.

I'm not one to prescribe to massive conspiracy theories. I'm not saying MS bid them to make such a comment. But when 4 years ago Bethesda didn't bat an eye over splitting up the community over ESO....one of its biggest money makers....it seems rather convienant that now its dire for Sony because they won't allow it with other platforms. Obviously, the current climate surrounding the issue made them think this, which is even more reason to take them seriously, because they only seem to care now because its a hot topic issue, and not because they cared in the past.

I have nothing against their games, other than they are buggy a lot of times. I don't really care for the company too much, but I do generally like their attitudes when talking to the community. not always though. however, then they do stuff like this, and it makes me shake my head. Bethesda are one of the few studios that have enough influence in the market to force change. I believe (in terms of average review score) they are one of the most successful single publishers.
They are a successful business, they are in the industry to make money and all decisions made will be to that end. We don’t know what is going on behind the scenes at the moment but Bethesda will not be ‘calling Sony out’ on a whim. This is a planned strategy that no one but Bethesda knows the details of.

Epic has much more influence in the industry, and they've been vocal about cross play. They aren't as petty as Bethesda is here to make idle threats though.

Bethesda can calculate all they want, but if they have to resort to going to the media in a passive aggressive fashion, then they aren't going to get much done. The big wigs in the industry can just as easily call up those of other companies and achieve a lot more than what Bethesda did here. If Sony was still being stubborn afterwards, then maybe they could resort to such measures to try and put pressure on them, but ultimately, Sony still isn't going to change anything if they haven't already.

I'd rather know exactly why the two companies can't work together, or at least a vague reason, or if they've even talked about it yet. This finger pointing and rampant speculation in the press and community is getting really old IMO. Realistically, the only excuse we've gotten so far is from Sony, who's said its a moderation issue...in a rather lackluster PR statement that really didn't explain the situation very well

Sony has had a brilliant generation full stop. They very well might have the best exclusive generation ever, all brilliant, story driven SP games. They dominated this gen. They've improved gaming in anumber of ways this gen. They are in the wrong on this crossplay situation period no excuse or stat or success in other areas changes that. Wanna know how Microsoft handles crossplay. Here's an example of what Microsoft does. I own minecraft on switch. As an option ms let's you log into your live account to promote "crossplay". Seems great right? Well of you go to the store and buy DLC for minecraft, Microsoft displays an ever so helpful message that you should buy it under your ms account to save it because if you don't you could lose everything you bought if your file becomes corrupted, or gets erased from the switch. Seems like good advice right? Except what they don't tell you is, once you do that you can no longer access the content unless you log in under you ms account. Not a big deal right? Wrong, if I am not in a place where I can access the Internet, I can't log in. So I'm locked out of using it until I can. Also, you can't shared t between switch profiles which Nintendo allows, but in this case ms doesn't. Still not a big deal? Tell that to my kids on our 16 hour car ride from Texas to Florida. They don't agree. That is misleading advertisement to try and stick you with their service. Exactly what Sony is trying to avoid. If there was no caveat for MS I'm sure Sony would be on board. So here's the question. What is ms really pushing with crossplay? Having to pay more for something you already own because of restrictions with their service? Let's get an article about the exact breakdown of crossplay with Sony, then judge.

I'm sure there are a lot of details that both companies would want worked out before they just allowed it between the consoles. Its not like MS is just so open to allowing anything on the Xbox that it'd be easy for them to accept anything Sony demanded. I always though coming to a consensus would be difficult between these two companies, because they both operate with very stubborn views on what they want, and what they will allow on their systems.

From the start of this discussion a couple years ago, I said it wouldn't happen quickly, and chances are, even if they are talking about it, that one company likely would want something that the other couldn't accept.

Unfortunately, since we aren't really hearing anything from either company on what is causing them to not come to a consensus, it's left up to speculation on the reasons why it isn't happening. Many are assuming that Sony is just not doing it because they want to stick it to MS, but I think it runs deeper than that. When the one Sony exec said that they had to think of the children, I took that as PR speak that Sony couldn't control the users on the other system, thus they lose a lot of moderation advantages to protect their users. This is something that they have with PC cross play, as its part of their compliance standards before a dev can implement and publish a game using the feature, and its very likely that MS won't accept all of Sony's rules.

So, in short, I think its both companies requiring certain things to make it happen, which the other company isn't willing to accept, thus, it's stalled out, and if I had to speculate, I'd say that both companies are in some way responsible in asking for things that the other won't accept. It doesn't have to be a one way street for denial, and likely isn't. Just people assume it is, because MS likes to keep saying how they're all for it. What MS isn't willing to talk about is what is required for them to allow it though....and to me, that is the much more important thing to know so we don't keep going round and round with the pointless discussion that's been had on the topic for the past two years.

Bethesda has consistently released sub-par and sub-standards games on Sony consoles and have been pretty much supportive of Microsoft therefore I am not surprised at the comments made. The fact of the matter is should they choose to ignore a massive market like the one offered by S9ny they do it st their own profit peril and I don’t think the board of directors would go for it.
This issue of cross play is a non issue. Something that has been created by a minority’s of people and made into a big deal when the vast majority of PS4 owners could not care less about cross play. It has never been an issue in the past and It is not now.
A few disgruntled people ranting about it and creating a media frenzy does not mean this is something of a necessity of PS4 owners.
Nice to have? Yes, it not a necessity and not to a point to make such a fuss about it.

I suggest Bethesda start to focus on making decent games on par on all consoles, stop re-release hundred version of Skyrim a game that, whilst amazing at the time and I thoroughly enjoyed, belongs to the past console and keep their opinions to themselves.

I'm a little torn on this. While I agree cross play is a good thing for many games and Bethesda are right to back it, I do think they're riding the wave because Microsoft created it.

But whatever the reason for their support, I still think the blame lies with Sony here. They've put up a lot of resistance to good (and more importantly optional) ideas like EA access, mods, and now cross play and the reasons given make no sense. They can't give the real reason (financial) because it would taint their "for the players" image.

I think Sony have made the right business decision for them, but cross play will come and we'll just have to see if being last to the party has any impact.
