Actually there are a couple of reasons to get a PS4 slim over the current PS4 or PS4P, It's smaller, runs cooler, quieter, along with less power usage, and of course it's cheaper than the PS4P. It also doesn't have the horrible dust collecting glossy finish that I personally hate with a passion.

I mean yeah stating the obvious. Slim models are made to lower prices and boost a companies profits further (Since they are almost always cheaper to make/ship).

I would agree though that anyone who wants a console would be silly to get anything other than the Pro. The pro for $400 is by FAR the best price/perf out of anything out there. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if Sony priced the slim at $300 (Instead of $250) in order to get people to pay that extra $100 for the PS4 Pro.

If you don't have a PS4, skip the PS4 Slim and get the PS4 Pro. Sony released a PS4 Slim to save themselves some money and make a bit more in profit off of it. I wouldn't waste a time on the PS4 Slim. I actually would have liked a PS4 Pro Slim. That's what Sony should have made. Oh well. I'll get the PS4 Pro & Scorpio next year.

Probably because they don't play games on PC's. The most popular PC games are all coming to game consoles now anyways. Tons of PC indies and many AAA PC exclusives heading to XB1 and PS4. I don't need to game on PC except for a few rare exclusives and MMO's. The gap between PC and console will close even further after the Scorpio and PS5 get released.

well, i think if you don't care/aren't interested in investing in 4K or the extra power right now, but want a secondary PS4, the slim would be the console to get.

noise was the main reason i sold my OG ps4(on ebay) and bought the new CUH 1215 models now i am glad that slim is even quieter. some of the OG ps4's can produce a very loud sound especially after playing for few hours

Yep, very impressed with how quiet ps4 slim is. I even like the form factor, it looks ugly in pics but it actaully looks really good in real life. Love it.

A slim console was never made to improve on the older version it was only ever intended to get more people into gaming with a more affordable package.

On this point it is great.

It was not until Mircosoft fanboys moved the goalposts saying a slim must be updated with HDR etc even when that can be patched in. Now it is 4K Bluray. If you really want the best quality for media do not use a games console. Buy a real 4K player

Microsoft fanboys did not build the Xbox One Slim. Microsoft did. Microsoft fanboys are talking up the features but the message and theme is that Microsoft built a XB1 that is smaller, without a brick (finally) and has some nice new features that many people want. If Sony had announced a PS4 slim with a 4K Blu-ray I doubt anyone would have said, "No, we prefer not to have that feature".

And judging by the price of a standalone 4K Blu-ray play, buying an XB1 Slim is a really good option just like buying a PS3 was a good option instead of a standard Blu-ray player at the time. A native 4K Blu-ray player is the same price as an XB1 Slim here in Canada. So why not buy a gaming console that has a 4K Blu-ray player and gaming capabilities rather then just a 4K Blu-ray player. This argument was used effectively by Sony to sell Blu-ray last generation. A lot of people (including me) bought PS3 because it was about the same price or cheaper then a Blu-ray player at the time.

Your argument is also factually wrong. Because there are also improvements in the PS4 slim. It has Wireless AC, Bluetooth 4.0, and supports HDMI 2.0.

It's not the same price as the original. The ignorance over at IGN is getting worse. Yes, the original was eventually dropped down to $300 to get rid of old stock but that doesn't change the fact the PS4slim is $50 cheaper. He also talks about the lack of ventilation as if suggesting it will get hot and so therefore could cause problems, something he draws attention to earlier when referring to touching the top and bottom of the console. The only problem with that is 'legitimate' sources who ACTUALLY did tests on the console said it runs cooler ... 'cooler', and quieter and uses less juice. So ... we have a smaller console for $50 cheaper that runs cooler, quieter and uses less juice and has less lag when the controller is connected to the console, but it's 'not really much of an improvement over the older model'.

Didn't you know? Touching the top and bottom of a console is a very technical and accurate way of testing if a system is running too hot and if there is sufficient ventilation for the system.

I mean, best guess on the operating temperature means a lot compared to computer generated models and extensive testing before production that these companies do on their systems....except for that one time where the console actually felt cool to the touch, yet ended up having one billion dollars earmarked to replace overheated consoles. Irony huh?

For those that don't recognize the satire, to know if the system is running too hot, should you actually touch a chip that was running too hot based on these kinds of chips heat index rating, you'd burn your skin off, and the surrounding case would be enough to probably cause some discomfort. Some heat is perfectly normal, and something running a bit hotter or cooler than something else does not denote that it is an inferior or superior product.

So the PS4 slim gets an 8.0 even though they did nothing to improve the controller, they removed the optical audio port, and have no 4K Blu-ray player or true HDR due to the HDMI being HDMI 1.4 still. And this can't even upscale games to 4K, yet costs $299 the same price as the Xbox One S that has HDMI 2.0, true HDR, 4K Blu-ray player, allows 4K media streams and upscales games to 4K as well. And the new Xbox One S controller has Blu-tooth and longer range and was redesigned. IGN gave that console an 8.5..... All that extra and it only gets a .5 better score?

Think I asked you in another thread to tell us what "true HDR" actually is. While you're at it, maybe you can explain how a TV can even display HDR if it isn't HDR10, or Dolby Vision in some cases, as those are the only two standards being employed in displays nowadays.

In fact, you've failed to respond to any remark I've made on your complete ignorance of UHD, HDMI, or HDR specs which you continuously seem to spew in a failed attempt to spread misinformation.

Wonder why N4G doesn't actually give restrictions to people who spread misinformation when actual real facts have been presented to them in the past by other users.

HDR can only be used with HDMI 2.0. The PS4 Slim and PS4 launch consoles don't have that.
According to the HDMi.org website:

New features HDMI2.0b: Support (HDR) High Dynamic Range Video Transmission

The only port standard that supports HDR and 4K video output to a reasonable degree according to the HDMi Open Standard organization is the HDMi 2.0b specification (introduced in 2015 with the HDMi 2.0a standard), which is currently supported on the Xbox One S.

You are thinking of HDCP2.2 UHD discs, which require HDMI2.0, mostly for the increased audio streams and higher color gamut sources(which games don't use and likely won't for a long time). But HDR10 is not intrinsically tied to UHD, or 4K.

Another thing I explained to you.

HDR10 is a standard supported by the TV's. The TV"s do the work when it comes to decoding HDR. HDR is encoded into the source, in realtime for games, by the content maker for movies. So how exactly is a non-standard HDR standard not implemented in any TV going to work at all? It's akin to a compressed zip file. The content is compressed into something for the user device(display) to decode and output a result.

See...here's where you're argument fails. It says the HDMI2.0 spec supports HDR. Doesn't say it's required. HDMI also supports 4K in various forms. It also supports numerous audio codecs. It also supports the general transmission of any kind of serial data through cable between devices. It even supports SD content.

Also, how do you know the slim doesn't have an HDMI2.0 port? Was that stated somewhere? Did you know that the HDMI1.4 port on the original PS4 is using a custom controller developed by Sony, which can be updated, and that Sony originally intended for all PS4's to be UHD compatible? Did you know some of their TV's received this upgrade not too long ago....and guess what HDMI controller chip they used.....yep, same programmable chip used in the PS4. Guess what those TV's had.....you guessed it, HDR. The slim may or may not include the appropriate chip for HDCP2.2 copy protection playback, but the internals of the chip are the same otherwise, and that is a completely different matter than HDR.

Unfortunately, you're misinterpreting the quote you cite. The HDR standard itself does not require HDMI2.0, but HDR in conjunction with HDCP2.2 and 4K does require at least HDMI2.0a.

Notice that part about "reasonable degree"? Well, if you look back and see there are only a couple HDR standards, then it either works, or it doesn't. HDR1.4 is all that's needed for HDR, and early HDR TV"s had HDMI1.4 ports. Are they suddenly incapable of displaying HDR too?

Again, there is no fake HDR. There are competing standards, and even some which don't have adoption in the display market yet....but PS4 has to support HDR10 for it to display HDR on TV's, else, it won't work as it won't be able to interpret the metadata passed along with the video itself. That's why HDR is called a standard....because it has protocols, and "fake" stuff doesn't tend to play well with standard protocols.
