If Digital Only Became Reality with Today's Prices, Would you Migrate to PC?

In this week’s podcast, in light of Industry analyst firm Superdata’s report on the digital games market for October, showing a 7% year-on-year increase to $5.5 billion in global spend, the Sparks discuss what life would be like if gamers had a digital only future imposed upon them with games costing more than they did in store and ask, would there be a mass migration to the PC and its more reasonably priced online services such as Steam, Origin and GOG? Would the sting of high cost digital games on console make the initial larger financial outlay for a gaming rig worth it?

probably not, id still stick to my consoles. It just means I'll buy less games, I already do that as not all are worth playing.

uptownsoul3109d ago (Edited 3109d ago )

I'd definitely move to PC...Unless prices on console significantly dropped

Get_A_Job_Foxtrot3109d ago

I'd go to pc. I hate pc gaming cuz I suck with the mouse, but i'll adapt and buy a controller. To hell with an all digital future.

bluebenjamin3109d ago

I migrated to PC and I'm yet to use mouse and keyboard, it's ps4 and 360 game pad for me

R6ex3109d ago

Already migrated to PC, but still gaming with controller 'coz I'm only into SP & not MP games. Best to lay back on the couch & enjoy the immersion of the big HDTV screen.

BrianOBlivion3109d ago

"To hell with an all digital future"
Damn straight.
If I'm FORCED into all digital gaming on the consoles, sure, I'll switch to primarily playing on my PC, because the convenience edge consoles have will be eliminated.
On PC there's better graphics, more options, I'll be able to BACK UP my content and as "R6ex" mentioned, I CAN still continue to do it "laying back on the couch & enjoying the immersion of the big HDTV screen".
Also, I have a HUGE game collection -all paid for, but if I am FORCED into an all digital future, you better believe I'm gonna pirate every goddamned one.

Insomnia_843109d ago

I would stop playing video games. Games on release for PC are always a broken mess and the whole PC gaming is to complicated with drivers and all that crap. I like the convenience of conaole gaming.

Sly-Lupin3108d ago

I can only assume you've never played a PC game before. PC gaming hasn't been a hassle since MS-DOS.

_-EDMIX-_3109d ago

I see many are not factoring that if digital was the only way, PC would also suffer.

Have many not factored that those CDKey sites are for PHYSICAL game codes? LMFAO!

If console went full digital, it would also mean the same with PC as that actually doesn't mean PC would some how be better off, it would actually hurt all gaming.

Consider PC only has those CDKey options because a damn physical option exist in the first place.

The assumption of um "if digital only became reality with todays prices, would you migrate to PC"...is basically making it sound as if the landscape of PC would remain unchanged if digital only would happen in gaming.

It would not. The cheapest game prices on the net for PC titles are due to the existence of physical versions as to why CDkeys are sold, also based on competing with those CDKey sites in the first place.

The second they stop making physical versions, no more CDKeys and hello 1 method and 1 price.

Scatpants3109d ago

Nobody buys physical games on PC anymore.

_-EDMIX-_3109d ago (Edited 3109d ago )

lolz...dat name doe!

But no, PC gamers indeed still buy physical PC games. One of my friends bought the new StarCraft expansion on disk.

http://www.amazon.com/Evolv...

http://www.amazon.com/Dying...

http://www.amazon.com/Middl...

http://www.amazon.com/The-E...

http://www.amazon.com/Titan...

http://www.amazon.com/Assas...

As to why you assumed um "nobody buys physical" on PC, is beyond me. Don't let Steam or GOG users fool you bud. As a person that owns a gaming PC, I can tell you that MOST of my library is actually physical.

Mind you, this is one of the reasons why most of my library is physical.

http://www.amazon.com/Mass-...

and on Steam.

http://store.steampowered.c...

Now...notice its cheaper then the physical...ON SALE! Thus...everyday the NORMAL PC physical price is actually near the sale price. Thus...I most times get the physical as I'm not waiting months to play a game I want to play due to waiting for a sale when I can get it near that any day of the year and own the physical disk.

Soooooooo $5 for a few days vs $6 any day of the year ...as normal price.

http://store.steampowered.c...

lolz, but stand back...that is a SALE TO THEM!

Yet....every day on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/of...

L....o.....L.

Mind you, if no one bought physical, it would not be offered, all major game releases have physical versions and only a small few skip them, most have physical versions. PC has just as much digital only titles now as console does. That is like saying no one buys physical on console because many smaller developers on PC AND console release digital only titles.

The reality is, major releases on PC still have physical versions. Supply exist because demand exist. I even got a physical version of BF3 and Skyrim when they released, same with Company Of Heros and many more.

DarkHeroZX3109d ago (Edited 3109d ago )

Honestly after the crap Disney pulled with my MvC2 and UMvC3 I'd just quit gaming. That or I'd pirate everything.

HumanatPlay3108d ago

Mac/PC are my everything and then some with my GPU making it possible to play 3rd party games at 4k/30fps, 1440p/60++fps, 1080p/overkill. In short, digital only isn't what it takes for one to move to PC, its the love for games and the ability to build a machine that allows you to get the best possible experience YOU want out of them.

Exclusives are the only reason I haven't stopped buying consoles, should the day come when Naughty Dog and other 1st party devs go multiplat, then I will kiss consoles goodbye. Though I don't see that happening anytime soon, so I still keep my PS4 close, but gone are the days of my blind love/passion for consoles.

madmonkey013110d ago

the price between digital titles and retail, along with no resale value is the main stumbling block for me.

example, battlefront is £55 to download of £39 to buy the disc,

xPhearR3dx3109d ago

Except for on PC. I've never had to pay full retail price for a PC game at launch with a MSRP of $59.99 unless I buy a physical collectors edition. There's so many sites for PC gaming like; GreenManGaming, G2A, CDKeysDiscount, etc that paying full retail price for a PC digital title is almost non-existent.

Honestly, if consoles had digital pricing right like PC does, I'd probably buy most of my games digital. After I built a gaming PC a few years back, I stopped selling my games because I mostly bought digital and you never know when you're going to get that urge to play something. Even if it's for a day.

Sure, its not as cool to look at a list of digital titles compared to a shelf with lots of games, but technology is moving so fast that digital games will be the norm. It's already happened for the most part with movies and music, it's only inevitable that games are next. Although it doesn't surprise me physical game sales are still high. Gamers are more attached to physical content, but defiantly by the next console generation I don't see it being as popular, or possibly not even an option.

MCTJim3109d ago

My opinion is that digital sales should be 15-25% lower than retail on new games. I truly believe that the next iteration of consoles will not have optical drives and everything will be digital. There will be those who resist, but the market is leaning towards it more and more. I myself prefer digital, but there are those who will reject the idea and get out of console gaming...which would be ironic since Steam and Origin do so well. The main problem is always going to be storage. I see prices of external drives coming down rather quickly and maybe, just maybe instead of optical, we will have games on USB style cartridges like the 3dsxl..time will tell

ginsunuva3109d ago

It's like saying jacking up the price of alcohol or tobacco will stop addicts.

They'll get angry but still buy it.

WeaseL3109d ago (Edited 3109d ago )

If it was digital only, console game prices would plummet to compete with PC so No.

Digital prices on consoles are high to appease retail.

Get_A_Job_Foxtrot3109d ago

I want to see gamestop not carry games simply because the digital price is lower. Watch them go bankrupt (which gamestop probably isn't too far from being, if the emptiness of stores is any indication).

Spotie3109d ago

And why, exactly, would you want that? They are the single biggest retailer of games and consoles in the world, employing hundreds of thousands, and you want them gone?

I can see wanting SOME of their practices changed, but to want the whole company gone?

Scatpants3109d ago

Yeah, they're about to go the way of Blockbuster. They're already thinking of all kinds of changes for their business model like used cell phones and stores just for kid stuff. I feel it may take more than that to save them.

Ashlen3109d ago

The gaming companies don't want to go digital because it will give "you" a better price. As soon as it goes all digital and the companies no longer have to compete with resale they will have complete control of the price and it won't benefit you the consumer.

Vegamyster3109d ago

With a console its not a good idea since its a closed platform, PC doesnt have this issue, all these different distributors compete by lowering the price. Example being i payed $50 CAN for Fallout 4 on Cdkeys instead of $80 on Steam.

Peace_Love_and_FPS3109d ago (Edited 3109d ago )

WHERE?!
OT: go flames go

Vegamyster3109d ago

@Peace_Love_and_FPS

http://www.cdkeys.com/

It's $58 CAN now due to demand.

Heyxyz3109d ago

I know, I say this to everybody and they don't believe me. They think if everything goes all digital Sony and MS will drop their prices out of the kindness in their hearts.

JEECE3109d ago

No, they will drop prices to make money when people stop buying the game for full price.

Scatpants3109d ago

If 100% of their game sales are from digital sales they would most likely be forced to drop the price to continue driving sales. They would probably also have more frequent flash sales with more titles offered.

What Happens to Your Steam Account When You Die?

Yeah worrying about digital ownership when you’re on the other side of the grass seems a little strange, but also on brand for these millennial journalists to worry about.

I'm sure Keith will be happy to hear he's a millennial journalist.

Goodguy011d 3h ago

I suppose if I have kids, I'd just give em my account details by retirement age. If I die young then...idk lol.

CrimsonWing691d ago

Yea, I mean just give someone the password to your account. Is that difficult to do or something? Like, I’m legit asking because I don’t know.

anast22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

It's not difficult but It's against the policy. If they find out, they will lock the account permanently.

CrimsonWing6921h ago

Ah ok, I had a feeling there was something like that. It seems kind of weird that you can’t just hand your account over to a family member or friend and let them take over the account.

PlayStation Aims to Entice PC Gamers to Play Single-Player Sequels on Consoles

Sony aims to release live service PlayStation games day & date on PC and PS5, but single-player games will have more "strategic approach."

-Foxtrot2d ago

How? I’m sorry but how when they literally port their games to the PC now after not even 2 years, it’s rumored GoW Ragnarok is next.

The best thing they could have done is focus on the generation before with PS3 / PS4 titles and when it got to the PS6 then start porting PS5 games so people will want to get the sequel on the new console

Now PC gamers just wait it out because they know it’s coming

Redemption-642d ago

Rock Star does the same thing. Release 1st on consoles, wait a year or two then release on PC. It's clearly a strategy that works for them.

They don't need a lot of PC gamers to move to Playstation, but they just need a few who would also buy into it and possibly double dip. There are some very unhappy gamers on Twitter, who wanted to hear day and date for all games.

Cacabunga1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

Fox
Your analyse is not accurate..

If sony keeps things the way they are then they will grow the business. Some pc gamers who really liked God of War for example might buy PS4 or 5 to play Ragnarok. Same if they announce ghost of tsushima 2 or a new Ratchet game.

-Foxtrot1d 21h ago

Rockstar?

Yeah I loved playing Red Dead Redemption on PC…….

@Cacabunga

I highly doubt it, PC gamers have their setups, if they didn’t budge for years to get a console despite all the cool exclusives then they aren’t going to budge now knowing a new PS5 game will get a port 2 years later

Crows901d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )

@cacbunga

Basically you're functioning under the assumption that PC players are impatient, rich and stupid.

Most will not budge. But if the hype is real enough they'll get a few. But those few won't actually be invested in the platform.

shinoff21831d 9h ago

Those unhappy gamers will just have to suck it up. I'm sure Sony sees how thats worked out for Xbox. Why tf would they follow in their footsteps

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 1d 9h ago
thorstein2d ago

How?

According to Sony, by co launching live service games like Helldivers2 day one, then enticing PC players to want to play sequels on the console for SP games.

That's how. If you play Ghost of Tsushima and Sony launches GoT 2 on PS later this year, you're more apt to want to grab the console and play the sequel instead of waiting.

2d ago
ThinkThink1d 23h ago

Yeah, pc players are the most patient of players. They will just wait for the game to come to pc.

Tacoboto1d 23h ago

You're just spitting back out the Sony PR line.

PC-first and PC-centric gaming is a different beast. Helldivers 2's popularity and GoT's popularity are because they're good solid games, not because they're from PlayStation publishing.

It's the same PlayStation that put Helldivers 2 for sale internationally, then pulled their PSN-Steam removal card. The same PlayStation that released Returnal with UE4's dreaded shader stutter. The same PlayStation that released TLOU Part 1 in a broken state.

If Sony's PS4 slate of titles didn't convince PC gamers, if their current PS5 titles still don't, ports of games they've had *years* of knowing and reading and hearing about aren't going to convince them to finally buy a console.

Don't fall so easily for the same PR BS that fabricates quotes from their own studio heads.

VincentVanBro1d 23h ago

Nah I’ll wait for the best version on PC lol

JEECE1d 21h ago

I mean that's certainly the thinking, but for most PC gamers that just won't work. Like in a rare circumstance if someone was already on the fence about a console that might get them to take the plunge and buy a PlayStation, but it will be the exception rather than the rule.

-Foxtrot1d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )

PC gamers are super patient

There's no f****** way, for example, they are going to get a PS5 the moment Ghost of Tsushima 2 is announced just because they played the PC port of the first game

The mindset?

"Ah cool GoT2 has been announced, really enjoyed the first game. Anyway I'll just play on the dozens of other games I have while I wait for the obvious PC port from Sony in like 2 years"

Not a chance they'll all wait now.

thorstein1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

@tacoboto

"You're just spitting back the Sony PR line."

I literally said: "According to Sony."

I was responding to someone who asked "How?"

I gave Fox an answer that reflects Sony's thinking. Maybe read the OP's comment and then reading a reply to that person as if it's an answer to their question instead of sounding off in such a bizarre way. See Jeece's reply to mine.

@Dom I do. Sony may not, but then again, they've made billions in the gaming industry and you've made $0.

INMATEofARKHAM1d 11h ago

@thorstein PC gamers have been condition to wait... Epic Games exclusives don't sell well and EA, Ubisoft, and MS have all come back/or arrived on Steam and that's all for preferred store front that doesn't cost money at all so to think people will rush out to spend 500 dollars on a console (whichvcould be used to help pay for PC upgrades) is a bit naive.

shinoff21831d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

I think some of yall are giving pc gamers to much credit. Not every pc gamer is gonna be the same. I'm sure sony isnt expecting all pc gamers to switch, that would be foolish. Idk how many pc goers are there. 500 million 400 million idk really. Say son bgets 5 million of them to it was worth it. If you say none imma call bs

You're mistakenly speaking for all PC gamers, there are bound to be some people who are not willing to wait and for Sony those are potential console buyers.

RaidenBlack1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

eh, no ... if a PC gamer is playing on a PC, they'll continue to do so ... there are tons n tons of games on Steam alone and the steam gamers' backlog stories are one of the most discussed topic you'll find in PC forums ... indie is already huge there, plus early access, PC-exclusive titles, VR, big publishers' titles and now Sony's ports too.
Realistically speaking, usually there's not enough time to complete the backlog alone, than go buy a separate console altogether.
The only game that has the power somewhat to make a PC gamer to get a console is GTA VI.
PC gaming existed and proliferated well before this recent Sony's PC decision.

StormSnooper1d 18h ago

@romulus23
True, there will be new gamers who will be exposed to PlayStation IPs, and they will possibly obtain PSN accounts, both of which make people more inclined to purchase PlayStation.

VincentVanBro1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

I don’t think you understand PC gaming. We have sooooo many games to play it’s kind of ludicrous. The insane Steam backlog is not a myth. So, we’ll happily wait for the best version of a game.

outsider16241d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

StormSnooper1d 18h ago

Well, if they want the games when they release, they will need a PlayStation. If they are ok with waiting, then they can do that. I think it’s a sound gameplan for PlayStation. The release of games on PC, will generate additional fans for the ips.

kaos891d 13h ago

So who cares how / when someone chooses to spend or not spend their money? Sony gets their money for their game sold either way whether its on PS5 or PC, so in the end what does it matter?

Resistance_lord1d 12h ago (Edited 1d 12h ago )

PC gamers will wait a year to get a game $10 cheaper lol. they ain't gonna go out and spend $500 on a system to play 1 game. people underestimate them big time.

outsider16241d 11h ago (Edited 1d 11h ago )

@Fox
It actually works, i know some of my friends and cousins who cannot wait and bought a Ps5 to play Horizon FW. In fact they cannot believe that "ps has amazing games" lol

Sure there's others who can wait a whole year or two but then there's others who have to play as soon as possible.

Christopher1d 10h ago

*** Now PC gamers just wait it out because they know it’s coming ***

I think a lot of people who would abandon consoles entirely don't because of the wait. Sure, they aren't drawing new users from PC like they want, but they are maintaining while getting more from PC-only gamers (possibly even double taps from those who own both).

Einhander19721d 9h ago (Edited 1d 9h ago )

The PS5 Pro is going to be WAY above the average PC of users on Steam.

The PS5 Pro will be able to play every single game they have released on PC at PC settings with a minimum of 60FPS and higher with unlocked framerates.

Jingsing1d 2h ago

I agree, there is zero logic from Sony on this. Sony completely underestimate how stubborn a PC player is. They can wait, I'll now wait as I've stopped buying games for my PS5 and will now acquire them for free on PC.

There you have it. Won't be 'day and date' single player games on PC anytime soon or for the forseeable future. They understand single player games are Playstation's backbone.

CrimsonWing6913d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I always get confused by this, but is 72k good sales numbers for a game? I keep seeing games fail at selling 2.5 million and that they need to be on multiple platforms but is an additional 72k adding much?

Fishy Fingers13d ago

Im not sure how its confusing :\

72k actively playing. Not 72k sold.

A good example is Helldivers 2, 6m sold, 450k (at its peak) active players.

But how many swords swung is what we're all really waiting for.

shinoff218313d ago

Lmao. How many swords swung. I was hoping for how many steps

wesnytsfs12d ago

And its how many years old from initial release.

Crows9013d ago

72k is concurrent
...that is not the sold figure.

Michiel198913d ago

for one they already had a huge launch on the playstation, they don't need to sell 5m to make the porting to pc profitable and as pointed out below that number you see is just the people playing it at this moment.

Plague-Doctor2713d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Also from the insomniac leak we know these PC ports are a quick turnaround and budgeted around $2-4 million. At 100k sales they break even including Steams cut. They may not sell millions but they are a great ROI

elazz13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

72k concurrent. That is a global number. People who bought the game are not playing at the same time because of timezones, working schedules, holidays, events... There is no good rule of thumb but you can extrapolate based on other games that also released sales data. Then it is clear that the PC release alone accounts for at least 500K copies sold on steam, maybe closer to 700-800K. Probably will sell over a million this extended weekend.

According to steamspy and other data gathering sites games like Days Gone, Spider Man, God Of War, Horizon Zero Dawn have sold 2 to 5 million copies on Steam. So I expect Ghost to reach similar numbers. Probably even surpass it.
