The Division Hands On: No Substance | VGFirst

Excerpt from the article

"As I sat down for my gameplay Session at the Dvision booth at EGX and performed a quick mic check with my squad, we were introduced to the controls by the games demonstrator. Although simple enough, he likened them to Metal Gear Online, but after 15 minutes it became very apparent that the game something of its own, for better or worse."

Hmmm. Does'nt sound good. I suppose its one persons perspective of the game though. Still on my radar but maybe not so high up there anymore??

ChronoJoe3167d ago (Edited 3167d ago )

Yeah it was my perspective and I have noticed that others came away from the demo enjoying it so yes you are right! Even though I loathed the experience, others might like it.

I was friends with one of the reps on the show floor and he was raving about it all day. I mean, he was payed to, but he seemed to really like what the game offered.

Not going to lie, this article made me sad. It's like hearing that the kid from high school voted "most likely to succeed" suddenly turned to heroin. I hope they fix this. Bullet sponges work well in fantastical games, not those rooted in reality striving for a "tactical" feel.

UKmilitia3166d ago

yeah it was my most wanted game from the first video they showed but its going down my want list gradually.

new ghost recon is my new game i want badly

SynestheticRoar3167d ago

UBI save the division. I'm starting to hear bad reports about the game.

smolinsk3167d ago

The game is already lost my friend:/

ThunderPulse3167d ago

I don't like the high HP this game uses.

I really had enough of reading this half way, the ammount of negativity towards (The Division) is unreal.
Ubisoft told us they were making n mmorpg, tom clancy style. You seemed to have forgotton that. The stealth system isnt designed to go n one hit kill enemies, its designed for you an your team to get into a decent position to take down enemies n groups of them. As for enemies, n because its an mmorpg, do you really think one hit kill to the head would work, no would be the anser there, but whos to say eventually that wont happen, once geared properly. Again as for enemies n being n mmorpg like every other, you have to give them the sponge effect n while in destiny you can get head shot not every enemy is like that, the sponge effect is needed or players would get fed up very quickly n get through the game even quicker, if no sponge was not there.
This post n the writer seems to grasp even the simplest of rpg features thats needed to make n mmorpg. Guild wars, wow, psu, rift, monster hunter, dc universe n many more have the sponge effect n complaining about fact The Division has it just make you sound as it frustrated you because you couldnt feel godly rite from the get go.
Im looking forward to The Division n no amount of posts like this will stop me. And certainly no amount of hate towards ubi’s game will derail this game from selling because ubi have a large number of fans n tom clancy fans of the franchise no ubi do a good job with them and will support ubi and The Division all the way..

That's your conception though, that an MMORPG should play a certain way, because that's what you have in your head, from past experiences with WoW, Monster Hunter, and other games that are completely unrelated to what The Division is.

Either way, the RPG systems might make sense in a PvE context but they were not conducive to enjoyable gameplay in my PvP session, in my opinion. The high health you describe in MMOs exists in a completely different context, where gameplay is decided by tactical use of a vast array of powers and synergy between those powers. The Division does not have anything close to those robust RPG systems and at its core it's a very traditional third person shooter.

I'm not at all saying that games with high health do not work in FPS, or TPS, if the skills and systems are built around characters having those health systems. For instance in Gearbox's newest Battleborne game, the high health works because it demands tactical use of a multitude of powers and synergy with teammates to strip it down. It needs the bulky health system to justify the use of those powers, and would be pointless if regular gunfire was the most efficient DPS output, but it's not.

Either way, you act like I am telling you to hate the game, I am not. If you see something in this experience that I did not, then more power to you. I have only explained why I didn't like my experience with the demo, for those who did not get opportunity to play it themselves. And there are plenty enough contrasting and mirroing opinions on the web already, from the same demo to see that the experience was rather polarizing. Maybe you will enjoy it, just as you clearly want to.

I also at no point suggested that I wanted everyone to die in one headshot, as you seem to suggest. There are plenty ways to validate a shooters RPG systems without making said RPG systems feel arbitrary. Destiny has done a good job with its RPG systems so far, for example.

I hope things improve, but this game has been in development limbo since it was announced 3 years ago.. Stil no release date in sight, and mediocre previews from several gaming sites. Not looking good.

Too bad because the hype around this game being a game changer was huge. It was announced in 2012 right?

I am in absolute agreement with the OP 👌

I hate when I see single player games and see people begging for multi-player. Jeez guys it don't need to be on every game. Latest one I seen was atomic heart.

Multiplayer or even co-op

If it was always a single player game then that's how it is

Inverno418d ago

It's a trend that never really went away. For me multiplayer in a primarily SP focused game was an excuse for DLC. Then there's the mentality gamers had that adding multiplayer makes a game worth the price, otherwise it should be half price for half a game. A way of thinking devs reassured when they started adding multiplayer to their sequels. We see the same with multiplayer focused games getting SP in their sequels.

Flawlessmic418d ago

Tbh multilayer now is a way to add live service and mtx elements, very rarely does it come of well.

What single players game used to be in a lot of cases now require 3 other people for keeping to really enjoy it and I hate having to rely on others to get the maximum from a game.

Sp should be sp, if devs want to add a separate multi mode then that's fine with me, the legends addition to ghost of tshushima was fricking sick but totally separate to the main game. Sick of co op too.

Hofstaderman418d ago

I remember when certain single player games had them as included optional modes that was played on the couch. Had brilliant times with Syphon Filter and Golden Eye. Me and my bro used to used to fight over who would play as Gabe even though it was technically just a skin. Good times.

Dagexon418d ago

I didn't notice your comment before I added mine.
But good times indeed
