The PS3 Game Your 360 Could Never Do

Cole claims that you may need 60fps in an action game like Devil May Cry 4, but in a racing sim where you're heading forward at all times 30fps is more than adequate. And judging by our hands-on, we're inclined to believe him.

I'd rather have 60 fps than 1080p, any day. Imagine COD 4 or Burnout Paradise without that smooth framerate. It just wouldn't be the same.

Remains to be seen if the same goes for this game. It looks great so far.

Extra "p" in a racing game is important. Although I'm not saying it's better than 60fps.

Imagine there is a long straight before a corner.
In SD you won't see the chevrons (arrows) indicating the corner, from a distance at the start of the straight. It is only when you get close enough to the chevrons for them to resolve from a pixellated blur so you can tell the direction you need to go in. The higher the resolution the further away you'll be able to recognise objects in the distance, hence giving you an advantage.

Try it out on the GRID demo by playing on a SD TV. Play the muscle car race (3rd one) and see how much closer to the corner you have to get before you recognise it as a corner.

ACT 3?...honestly I found that part of the game to be the least graphically impressive (still more impressive than pretty much everything else in gaming, but the least impressive of MGS4)...save for the cutscene in which Akiba is soaking wet from the canal...dude...never seen wet clothing look that realistic in real time rendering...not even in uncharted...

but act 2 seems to be crazy in term so processing also...the change of day integrated into the entire level (which happens in real time if you pay attention)...

I don't know...now that I think of it all the acts had their own stuff that made them unstoppably awesome...its just they are all very different in setting...so its tough to compare...one thing is certain though; the 360 simply hasn't shown anything that looks close to this...doesn't mean it won't happen, it just means until then...the PS3 is without question running the best looking console game of all time currently...

You're right, but at the same, from what I've gathered the cars aren't as robust, ( by that I mean more variations and models) as GT5:P, or 5 itself. I like vroom vroom. But you're right and I'll keep an eye out and hopefully test it before my final FINAL verdict.

Well, yeah, but that rain demo (see the video on the right) was pretty impressive. It really is close to GT what I can see. That damage model looks odd, though. He crashed into another car. Glass broke, but the car just got some scratches where I would have thought at that speed it should have shattered into pieces. But it looks very GT-a-like. 1080p, too. The trade off is the amount of cars (or the variation), but then, its a "Ferrari" game. The download once a month sounds interesting (1 track + 5 cars). Guess I'll be waiting for that before I go with Grid...or maybe I'll buy both. GT5 is a way out, anyhow.

My cousin just purchased Grid on the PS3 over fathers day. Absolutely is in love with it. He rented GT5:Pro and didn't care for the way they stick you with a low class, low speed car at the very beginning and expect you to buy your way up. I guess Grid is not like that, but he did hate the damage you take. He says he has been in 1st place many a time just to get touched by a compu-racer and dropped down to last place. He says there is nothing more frustrating than that. I have not made my mind up yet. Looking into GT5 (full version) but may grab Grid for a rent and see if it is worth it.

I got GT5Prologue. And I am in the 4th class now, which you enable after winning all other 3. I still like GT5 Pro, I liked Grid, too. But the car handling is not the same in Grid (more arcade), and at some point they "overdo" it with the damage (what you say, like, you lead, one little mistake, and your gone - but that usually the case with any race game). I like the damage in Grid, in general, though. But sometimes you can't do anything about it if the others bump into you. I don't like the drifting part, though.

Thus far, this developer for a game I've heard very little of is instead praising the ps3. F1 Champ on PS3 actually looked pretty good though this game(FC) has piss poor cartoony visuals that have half the visual effects other games have. The reason why only first party (exclusive) titles have 1080p at 60fps is because the developers are dedicated to one platform. They have a lot more time for just one console. Coding for PS3 isnt easy, so that extra work for 1080p and 60fps is going to take quite a while untill developers are familiar with the PS3 system.

Thats why you never saw great titles on the PS2 when it just came out. Games like Resident Evil 4 and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams came out few years after the PS2 launch because the developers got to know the system, and were more comfortable with it..

The same thing will happen to PS3.. Developers will know the system better and eventually , better games will come out.

I suggest you all put your XBOX 360 consoles on ebay, and start saving up some money for the year 2009, because next year is going to make everyone's jaws drop..

Wow. I had no idea that the upcoming Ferrari game on the PS3 was being published by Sony. If this game has visuals close to GT5 Prologue, it's a must buy for me.

But, you've got to admit, the PS3 is capable of better graphics and it's a fact, just look at games like Uncharted, GT5 Prologue and Metal Gear Solid 4 that were made specifically and exclusively for the PS3, all 3 of those games have graphics that blow away ANY 360 game.

The graphics in MGS4 are very inconsistent. The character models, human faces and cutscenes are excellent, better than any game I've seen on the 360. But a lot of the graphics in the game itself aren't very impressive, mostly because of the terrible textures. The graphics in the jungle section of south america are straight up BAD. Yes, I'm serious, they are BAD. The water and especially the rocks in that jungle section are the worst I've ever seen on a next-gen console. MGS4 is a great game, with some mind-blowing visuals. But the graphics are all over the place. The idea that "the PS3 is capable of better graphics" is not a fact. Textures are part of "graphics", and I've never seen a PS3 game with good textures. OVERALL, uncharted and even heavenly sword have better graphics than MGS4, so I wouldn't throw MGS4 out there as the ultimate PS3 graphics showpiece.

Uncharted has great textures....fantastic textures, actually.

UT III has great textures. At least equal to Gears of War. The engine was improved upon, so it can't be worse.

Gran Turismo 5 prologue - The reason the cars look so great are because of texture tricks and high polygon count.

The PS3 can stream high-res textures easily.....you just have to have developers willing to create those high-res textures and stick them on a blu-ray disc.

Also, textures don't make games good at all.

Good physics, lighting, and sound are what really draw a player into a game. Textures are fake detail on a model, whereas the PS3 can push insane polygon counts to the point where all developers need is a great lighting engine and lots of polygonal detail to bring real detail out of their environments and characters.

Killzone 2 is a prime example.

The geometry is VERY complex, in the environment as well as the characters, and through actual physical detail like that, all you need is a proper lighting engine (Geurilla has a FANTASTIC deferred lighting engine) to provide the depth and detail.

Besides, that's how humans perceive detail anyways. Varying amounts and types of light produce different amounts and types of details.

Complex geometry provides more realistic depth and detail than illusion-based textures can.

Textures produce an ILLUSION of depth.

High geometric detail is REAL depth when coupled with a dynamic lighting engine. No need for crazy and copious amounts of textures.

I think to remember, that someone from Naughty Dog once mentioned, because of streaming, they could actually get about "700MB" virtual video memory (think about virtual memory for a graphics card where you use the vmem as a cache only). So, combine RSX/CELL and streaming allows to "virtualize" vmem, it seams. Needs some effort, obviously, but can work around the 256MB physical barrier.

Let me clarify, what I mean is, why doesn't Forza or Splinter Cell look as good as GT5P or MGS4? You could say, well it's because Forza has a damage model, however the devs has said that there is going to be damage as an add-on for prologue before GT5 even shows up.

I think it comes down to 3 things.

1. Money 2. Time 3. Artist/Developer skill

Just like musicians or painters or any artist some are just more skilled and have more skilled people working for them.

If you look at PGR4 I would say that game definately gives GT a run for its money. Look up some c0ckpit views on Youtube and then compare to GT they are very close. I think GT wins in car models and PGR wins in environments and that might change when the full GT5 is out. I've played up till chapter 4 of MGS4 and I compare it to GRAW2 as far as gameplay visuals are concerned. But like my 3 bullets above, I think Kojima just has a team of extremely talented/creative artists that give it that edge. Technically as far as physics, particle effects, lighting, polys, etc I think the 360 could handle it.

I'm no professional so I would be curious to get the opinions of some people in the biz like TinTin on N4G or one of the others. I just go by what my eyes show me.

going by what i read on here, i thought that around 70% of the posters in some comments are industry veterans. they all seem to know what can be done on the ps3 and what cant be done on the 360.

it's like what you said. time, money and talent. gt and killzone run on superior game engines that have had money and man-hours galore lavished on them. the far-cry2 game engine is not far off of killzones, and already runs great on both platforms. the only thing stopping the 360 from running games as good as killzone or gt is the fact that microsoft has no studios that have created game engines as good.

Who cares, really. Most of my 1080 games are 1080 games. I was actually surprised that MGS4 runs 1080 even if 720p is on. It sure is upscaled. So ? Visuals are awesome, with no drawback, no slowdown, no frame skip. 1080@30 is perfectly manageable. We'll see. Even if its just one native line more then 720p. I would still prefer a game which keeps up the FPS (no that's not a genre:) and would still render in 1080 - no matter if scaled.

It is as you said kind of uninteresting to buy a $60.00 game that will only give you one type of car. PS3 doesn't have more memory available when a game might require more than the 256MB's. We already know PS3 has a Total of 512MB the 360 still has more memory than the listed 512mb lol and the 360 design is unified and can pull more than just 256 out of a pool set for gaming as the PS3 is designed..

1080p at 60fps is present in GT5:Prologue. The Digiguys engine, which is PS3 exclusive, runs at 1080p60fps, and it's looking nice. There is no game running at that resolution and framerate on 360. Even its first party exclusives run at below HD resolutions. Idiot much? Stupid fanboy.

Why not just get GT5 which has better graphics, better physics (at least better than Forza), and runs at 60fps.

Still, if they have managed to get this game running at native 1080P despite not having much background in PS3 development I'd be quite impressed.

There is also some truth to what the guy said about 30fps being good enough for many consumers. However, 60fps is much better and for those who appreciate real driving physics where even the weight transfer is properly simulated both in handling and in graphics. Only GT5:Prologue does this so far.

GT was the staple of console racing game physics when it was the only one out. Forza series crushes GT in physics and sound. In forza you can tell which wheel is about to loos grip by sound and feel. And as far as weight related physics, Forza owns that in spades. For starters GT allows way to much dip, especially in the more high-end cars. I've never seen a Lotus dip as much, they have a high end suspension system, not only that, the R8 dips like a minivan stock in GT. I've seen the R8 perform on Top Gear and there is not that much weight transfer in the real vehicle. What's the sense of buying such an expensive car if it dips and bobs like a minivan. Please, GT's great with the graphics on the car models, don't confuse graphics with physics. They don't coincide, you can have one without the other.

Then there is the AI, never been GT's strong point. Forza's AI has beaten GT's since day one.

One question though, are Polyphonal using the same tire screech wav file to be nostalgic? It sounds just like all the other GT's sound files. Forza has so much more depth with sound alone. It's almost like you can sense the increased load on the tires with the sound alone, besides the rumble.

Then we have aerodynamic physics alterations. In forza everything you do to the aerodynamics and suspension tuning affect your cars behavior and then since damage is available it is that much better because if you damage your spoilers your handling is seriously compromised (high speed driving becomes increasingly difficult). Not only that, there are people who sell their tuning specs on Forza's Auction House for Time Attack racing and drift racng. How insane is that, then you have Forzacentraltv.com, why don't you go check it out. GT used to be the king, but it has let it's competition outperform them in almost every category.

Oh and what's the sense of all those useless car models, i rather 200 real-world raceable cars, then 500 cars and only 200 make sense to race with. That's a waste of time and racing.
