Sony Slams Xbox one for Forced Camera - Originally Planned PS4 Forced Camera?

Sony’s PR message has been loud and clear. ‘Gamers should have a choice.’ This has been a phrase that has been tossed around from several different PS4 representatives.

But was the camera decision based truly around making sure that gamers had a choice? Or was it simply a decision made because of financial reasons?

Is it possible that Sony and Microsoft had exactly the same game plan? And has Sony REALLY abandoned that plan? Or have they just decided to drag it out?

The "forced" PS eye wasn't going to affect the price

yarbie10003885d ago

IGN: "Sony nixed plans to include the camera add-on with every system and shave $100 off its originally planned price of $499."

Sony CEO Oct 8th: The decision to leave out the camera helped keep the PlayStation 4's price tag down. Efforts were made to include the camera, but pressure from above forbade Sony Computer Entertainment from making too much of a loss on the PlayStation 4 hardware.

Kayant3885d ago

"Sony's Masayasu Ito says US$399 was deemed "the magic price" for the PlayStation 4 – bringing it in US$200 cheaper than the PlayStation 3. Efforts were made to include the camera at the US$399 mark, but pressure from above forbade Sony Computer Entertainment from making too much of a loss on the PlayStation 4 hardware."

Nice that you missed this out.... Like heavy already said price wasn't changing from $399 camera was cut because it was going to be too much of a loss.

FamilyGuy3885d ago

PS4 was neeeeeever gonna be $499, no matter what.

I don't even get the point of this speculation, the price was decided to be $399 years ago, it was one of the first things decided before choosing the hardware that would go into the box, it was their goal. $499 is the same initial buy in price of the PS3, it wasn't gonna happen.

Eonjay3885d ago

Basically, Sony was always going for $399, but if they had included the camera. they would have lost money on top of the $60 they are losing on each console. So, they adopted the idea of choice. They would give you the choice to buy it separately. They could mitigate loses on every unit sold and they could make money on every camera sold. Its business.

3885d ago
GraveLord3885d ago

Yeah, you're wrong. Sony have only OFFICIALLY stated that they planned to include the camera but keep it at $399. The higher-ups at Sony wanted to minimize losses so they said no.

Facts > Rumors

Outside_ofthe_Box3885d ago

lol So Sony didn't "force" the camera in order to not take a huge loss?

A lot of people looking hella foolish for swearing up and down that Sony didn't include it due to seeing XB1 price at E3.

I personally think Sony should have swallowed the loss and put the camera in on every system, but obviously this was the better decision for them as now they are making $60 on each camera sold instead of giving it away for free.

Sono4213885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

I think it's funny how all of these "negative" Sony/PS4 articles that have been coming out lately are flat out wrong/misinformed yet Xbox fanboys come to the scene to start talking like its fact.. like cmon.. I know your desperate for some negative PS4/Sony news after all of the negative Xbox One/Microsoft news.. but seriously...

Besides aren't these the same people who complain every time there are people pointing out the Xbox One's/Microsoft's flaws? talk about hypocrisy.

The fact that we have been hearing loads of negative news about the Xbox One/Microsoft yet nearly none for Sony/PS4 should say alot.. some are simply blinded by fanboyism to see this though.. sadly :/

Drekken3885d ago

Funny because the camera retails for 50-60 bucks. That line reaaally makes sense especially after hearing interviews where $399 was always the price point. That is the price the PS3 rocketed past the 360 in worldwide sales. Sony was never going to release a $499 console.

UltimateMaster3885d ago

If Sony would have bundled the camera with the system, it would be 450$.

P0werVR3885d ago

Instantaneous gratification is the worst gratification. So Sony, enjoy your quick fix while it lasts.

As Microsoft stated, there in it for the long haul. This launch will be much better than any launch in history, simply because of the gaming stamina starting out from the get. Look at next year's potential titles.

The only thing that will save Sony in the long haul is First party studios. They need to make the BEST first party games possible. But since Microsoft is investing more this next gen on First party...boy are we going to see some AMAZING GAMES on either console.

Big ups for gamers. Gaming is going to be sweet.

G20WLY3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

Yes Yarbi, I read that from IGN too, via N4G. Just because they spin crap, doesn't mean you can recycle it for your own gain.

You sir, just proved that your rant is a duplication of a past article from IGN and so this should be removed. Well done lol *facepalm*

ShwankyShpanky3884d ago

Ahahahaha... The PS4 won't be the brand that needs saving, bub.

Or to put it another way, it's great that a camera worth $100 is only costing us $60. It depends how you want to play the game videogamesandnews ... I find it rather telling that your estimated price puts it at the same price as the X1 and not $40 cheaper. Something doesn't add up here.

stuna13885d ago

Exactly Gribble, either way some try to put it, the PS4 on all accounts would have came in cheaper than it's competitor! Not only that it's still a better value with or without the camera with better tech.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF3885d ago

I thought the same thing but with the X1! It's great a 200 dollar camera is only costing us 100!

osprey193885d ago

Well considering that if u bought the kinect 2.0 on its own it would cost well over £200 at minimum. So ur right something doesn't add up. 😖

rainslacker3885d ago

@midnight

That's fine. It's a great value if you actually want the camera. From what I can tell, many people don't. If many people did, then MS wouldn't have been inclined to remove the requirement to keep it connected.

Funnily enough, I probably would have wanted the Kinect. I still do actually. But not for the reasons MS is putting it in the box. I develop Kinect software on PC. The $499 w/ the camera would have been a good deal for me if a $399 version were available without, and a camera costing $150-200 separately.

MRMagoo1233885d ago

@midnight

Actually you are probably paying $200 for the camera because the xbone console itself if prob worth only $299.

Xbox 360 launched a year earlier. Your argument is now invalid.

Blaze9293885d ago

Major Nelson pretty much explained why a Kinect is necessary with every Xbox One and I honestly think it will do more good in the long run than the backlash its receiving in the short jog.

http://youtu.be/O5WQ3MS9veM...

"One of the games is working on this concept when its darker, there may be more zombies on the screen. When you make noise, the zombies will come towards you. So you have to be quiet, in your own room. So if your little brother comes in and makes noise, zombies will come after you.

So theres experiences like that developers are working on that they have this full canvas to think of now that they know Kinect WILL be there."

Zombie Xbox One games, it's gotta be Dead Rising 3. And if a launch title is supporting this, then amazing. If not DR3, then new zombie game confirmed and from the sounds of it, will be amazing.

With that, that really sold me. I had NO idea that things like this were going on!

So i honestly think really, mandating kinect with every Xbox is better than having Kinect at all. Better to have full support than maybe support thinking MAYBE, this consumer owns a kinect. MAYBE this consumer owns a PS4 Camera. Maybe?

How much support do you all honestly think the PS4 Eye will get? How much support did the PS3 Eye get? The PS Motion controllers? The EyeToy? The Sixaxis? Oh, i thought as much.

$499.99 is hefty but seeing how the PS3 came out for $600 in '2006', it clearly - won't matter - in the LONG RUN.

If you want a Xbox One and for some reason, an extra $100 is preventing you from getting one - then you should probably reevaluate your financial situation. That or your interest in something you proooobably had no interest in to begin with. I really don't see what's wrong with forcing Kinect 2 with every Xbox One console.

AridSpider3885d ago

"One of the games is working on this concept when its darker, there may be more zombies on the screen. When you make noise, the zombies will come towards you. So you have to be quiet, in your own room. So if your little brother comes in and makes noise, zombies will come after you. "

whoa whoa whoa...why is no one talking about this!? That sounds AMAZING

SaffronCurse3885d ago

I don't want little Timmy coming in when I'm gaming and ruining my game experience because he decided to shout.

JasonXE3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

@SaffronCurse then lock your door and shut up.

Anyway, thanks for that link Blaze. that is indeed new info right there - sounds like a feature I would've never even begun to think about for Kinect and hardcore games.

The fact that Kinect 2 can see your heart rate and pulse now too, they could beat Nintendo to the punch with that little Vitality Sensor..that they failed on.

rainslacker3885d ago

Interesting use of the tech. Question though. Why do you need a camera to achieve this? How come most of the features I hear people go on about can be achieved with a simple microphone? The Kinect doesn't make these things happen, the software does.

Don't get me wrong. I have heard of some interesting movement based features as well, but you don't need a rocket-science powered camera to achieve those things either.

GrandpaSnake3885d ago

o this sucks for me because i got two little ones running around in the living room, key word living room, were most xboxones will be.

AceBlazer133885d ago

can't you speed up robberies in gta by speaking into any old mic? don't see how kinect is practical yet since somebody already did it on current gen.

QuickdrawMcgraw3885d ago

Lack of support!LACK OF SUPPORT!!...Can't argue with you there Blaze. That's the reason I sold my 360 and will wait to buy a 1.I need to wait some years to see if MS will actually support it's console with more then words this gen.

BBBirdistheWord3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

@ Blaze

Thanks for bringing that up. That truly does sound like a good use for the Microphones in Kinect and the extra audio processors in the XBoxOne will certainly help achieve this.

It's funny that this has not been mentioned before because it sounds like an awesome use of the tech.

Truth be told, mandatory Kinect2 is a fabulous business decision, as developers are much more likely to include this tech in their creative process if it's included in every sku.

I have been gaming for about thirty years now and I am tired of the same old games with a few more pixels.
I am looking for new experiences and kinect2 seems much more promising to me than ps4 at this stage.
The sad fact is that not only is the PSeye inferior tech, but its optional inclusion implies it is not being taken seriously at all, by anyone.
And that sucks.

So Sony slams Microsoft for something they didn't have the balls to pull off.

Typical Sony. Letting Microsoft take the heat and then copying when they see the potential of Kinect 2 come to fruition.

prediction for E3 2015. Sony announces every PS4 SKU will come with PSeye.

Sono4213885d ago

ohhh mystogan... once again I caught you being ignorant.. but its okay your an xbox fanboy... it kinda comes with the territory ;)
so ill just help you out a lil bit.. Sony already stated that the original plans with the camera had the same price ($399) but decided not to because they didn't want to sell it at that much of a loss.

But hey don't give up buddy! keep trying youll get it right one of these days ;)

vigilante_man3884d ago

It is much better to think things through, refine your product, think it through again and then announce it.

The alternative is to rush your product because competitors are releasing theirs earlier than you expected, then announce your product and keep changing your mind in full public view. (i.e. 180s).

It makes one company seem super organised with defined plans and the other seem like its bungling around in the dark trying to play catch up.

Perception is 9/10ths of the law of advertising.

KrisButtar3884d ago

"So Sony slams Microsoft for something they didn't have the balls to pull off"

Yes, Heavy, in your little magical fairyland where Sony is perfect and MS is the devil, it wouldn't have affected the price at all.

Sony, after all, is not a huge gigantic corporation that wants to make money, they LOVE to just give things away for free.

Especially since they have such a good financial track record.

It's hilarious how much you guys have deluded yourselves.

ALLWRONG3884d ago

Sony forced Blu-ray and they're going talk crap? Hypocrisy: something Sony has in common with its fans.

corvusmd3884d ago (Edited 3884d ago )

So then...despite you being wrong...what you are saying is that Sony was just cheap and wanted to make more profit, so they took the camera away, despite the fact that many of the "advances" of the controller are based on use of the camera....hmmm you're right, I see how they care about their gamers. Sony is as cold and heartless as ever, and across ALL their products, they are known for being over-priced for what you get...PS4 will be no different. Sure it has a powerful GPU, but that's ALL it has, and it will have to do all the work by itself. The network is a joke, and there is no reason to charge for it at all...that's why they are handing out "free" games like crazy.

This is what Sony has been doing this whole build up to next gen. They know that their fanbase is a bunch of uneducated kids, so they slam MS for things they intended to do as well, then 180'd, just like the DRM deal. If you notice, their PR approach is always childish trash talk with really no backing....cause that's what their fans do, it appeals to them. As time goes on, we will really all see that it was all false and hollow, just like the fan trash-talk.

http://www.tomshardware.com...

Gamer6663884d ago

So if the PS eye would not have affected price then why did they not include it?

The competitor has a camera/mic and have included it in their package... But, Sony would not include the same feature that they could supply for free?

WTF? Boy, Sony has the wool pulled over your eyes...

What? For something to roast Sony's &*$$ over even though the PSeye3 never came off as being as intrusive and mandatory as Kinect 2.0?

@Kayant:
That's the same argument with Sixaxis, which was both balked at and dumped as soon as Sony resolved the lawsuit over rumble.

Kinect's issue is that it generally doesn't work, and yet is being shoehorned into the XB1. They might be able to find more than party games to work with it, but right now it more an unproven burden on the console as well as anyone who buys the XB1.

black0o3885d ago

@black0o

I am a major sony fanboy and I get annoyed at anti-PS4/Sony articles, but seriously? The media has done nothing but praise Sony since the PS4 announcement. Apple got way more crap when their Foxconn scandal happened. MS (to me, deservedly so in most instances) has been getting bashed left and right and the gaming media is critical of them non-stop. This story is a non-story, but don't make it sound like this is like it was after the PS3 announcement when every article was anti-Sony.

Mystogan3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

Kinect doesn't work? What do you mean it doesn't work? I have heard nothing but praise for Kinect 2.

Godmars2903885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

@Mystogan :
Kinect 1.0 failed to prove its viability. Was promoted and shown off years before it was actually released, given huge amounts of hype for its potential on the PC modding front, then didn't deliver. Became little more than voice remote with junkware for party and kid games.

All I've really seen of Kinect 2.0 is it's debug mode which sees in the dark while two titles originally meant to promote it on the 360 have dumped it. Its one launch title delayed with the real kicker being, with it being included with each XB1, it doesn't even have to work. MS has given themselves to prove that it does at their leisure.

MRMagoo1233885d ago

@mystogen

I guess you must have your fingers in your ears most of the time then because i havent seen anyone say it works well yet besides MS employees and ppl making a game for it, and even then when they demo the games they work like sh!t and the lag is as bad as the first kinect.

BallsEye3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

Lies. All hands-on are praising kinect 2. I think you're mistaking it with kinect 1, it didn't work well.

Kayant3885d ago (Edited 3885d ago )

Giving everyone kinect is not going to magically make devs shoehorn features into their games if it doesn't belong there or add any benefits to their game. Like the touchpad if it makes sense in their game then it will be used by devs knowing that everyone will have a kinect doesn't mean they will suddenly start using it. The touchpad proves just that.

Things will only be used if they fit the vision for a game bundling a peripheral wouldn't change that. Anyways MS bundling kinect is less to do with gaming and more to do with their *natural* user interface experience they're going for with voice control & UI navigation. Things like things like snap & the inclusion of IR to control your media centre where made with kinect in mind.

DragonKnight3885d ago

How much do you want to bet that Microsoft will mandate that Kinect features, even basic ones like menu control or voice command, will be mandatory in order for games to appear on Xbox One?

It's coming, you heard it here first.

Kayant3885d ago

What would be the point in them doing that? That's the last thing kinect needs.... Simple stuff like that wouldn't help market kinect any better for gaming. Things like that is what is wrong with kinect - it needs something fresh & new which will most likely come from indies. It's a great peripheral for user interaction, gaming not so much atm. Me personally a motion camera will never replace my controller or be another way I play a game expect when with friends & family for party games & such.

DragonKnight3885d ago

Quite simple. It would act as a trojan horse for Microsoft's targeted ads program. They could easily make it so that games that have Kinect features will require Kinect to be on and connected to the Xbox One to fully function. Add to that a mandatory requirement for even minimal Kinect features to be present in all games, and you have the launching pad for targeted ads appearing on every Xbox One with the illusion that people have opted in when in reality they were forced to.

Kinect isn't simply a device for gaming and indeed MS' plans for it hardly involve actual gaming at all.

Given what MS have already tried, and that they are 100% committed to their original plans, I'd say the likelihood of this isn't small.

I mean, what was the point in making Achievements mandatory. It didn't make them money, it didn't sell games (despite what Achievement whores think, it didn't. The amount of people that actually care about achievements is outweighed by the amount that don't), yet that was made to be mandatory in all games.

n4rc3885d ago

Yeah.. Real simple.. Lol

Too bad they've already come out and said that isn't happening.. Repeatedly..

If you choose to think they are lying to you, thats your business..

DragonKnight3885d ago

"DRM can't be turned off"
"Kinect is mandatory for the function of the Xbox One."
"The Kinect will not collect your data"

"We are 100% committed to the original vision."

Yeah, what Microsoft says is set in stone and never changes. They'd never screw gamers over or have invasive unwanted programs and features that people hate. Never. Right?

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 3885d ago
rainslacker3885d ago

Not having Kinect mandatory, and an optional peripheral that less than 1/4 of the user base had THIS gen made many devs shoe-horn in Kinect features that didn't belong there. Same with move too, but to a lesser extent since it was a separate controller. Some devs did better than others, but I've yet to hear of any real game-changing experiences from any implementation.

Sony shares big new PS Plus stat, but not the one we want to see

PlayStation Plus has improved the split of PS4 and PS5 players on its priciest tiers, but Sony continues to hide total subscriber numbers.

"the total number of PS Plus subscribers across all tiers was 47.4 million"

darthv7210h ago(Edited 10h ago)

That PSN number seems like it should be much higher... especially when you consider that PS4 alone has a sell through of over 117m. To not even be at least half that is rather interesting.

To the XB side, having 34m to an install base of roughly 50m (XBO sell through) or even 85m (360 sell through) is a greater percentage of unit to member ratio than PSN.

What. Definitely more os plus subscribers but that makes sense due to actual console sales

Darth the difference between the bases are huge your right but you gotta think. Ps players buy more games, where as the Xbox base relies on gamepass for their gaming. So it makes perfect sense

darthv729h ago(Edited 9h ago)

What makes perfect sense though? You say PS players buy more games... so then logically there should be more PS+ subscribers given the increased number of online multiplayer games in the PS4 generation alone. The PS4 was the first time that + was required for online play much like Gold was for 360 users.

Keep in mind we are talking subscribers, not simply XB/PS users. I assume you meant to say offline single player games, which is most likely true as well. That gen also saw a significant increase in games with an online component comparted to the previous gen.

victorMaje8h ago

I for one will be going back to essential at the next renewal. When I feel a game is good & right up my alley, I’ll check trusted reviews & just buy it.

jznrpg7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I have the top tier until 2028 as they gave me a massive discount for all the years I had left but I’ll most likely go to essential as well. I buy my games but my kids do use the service occasionally. They do prefer to own their games as well since any game can leave the rental service at some point and they don’t like that idea. They mostly use it to demo games then ask me to buy games if they really like it.

RedDevils3h ago

For me, I will cancel it all together but unfortunately I still have it till 2030 lol

meganick7h ago

I would like to see Sony add a fourth tier of PS Plus for people who just want to be able to play games online without any of the perks like monthly games, store discounts, or anything like that, and it should cost $20 annually, $30 maximum. There’s no way I’m paying $80 just to play games online. Even the original $60 fee was too much, and I would often wait for sales to re-up my subscription.

P_Bomb3h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Essential is too expensive, I agree. We’ve got one Essential and one Premium sub. Dropping the Premium when it expires.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC1d 22h ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--1d 20h ago (Edited 1d 20h ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop1d 18h ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.

This will surely shut up all the new trolling accounts trying to spread lies and non facts in other articles comment sections before this article is posted.

Hofstaderman1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

Obscurely, those trolls or troll will not show in these articles as the truth is contradictory to his or their orchard-sized daily dose of copium and hopium.

Tacoboto1d 22h ago

Or... They're intentionally trolling you guys specifically. Because they know it upsets you so easily.

Name-dropping Orchard, after this many months? How long has it been and he's still in your thoughts?

Elda1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

I'm quite sure the individual is reading these positive comments downvoting & seething at the same time. Edit: It just downvoted my comment...lol!!

Hofstaderman1d 22h ago

No I'm entertained by this individual. I love unhinged people, they are so interesting lol.

repsahj1d 23h ago

Wow! I am super impressed that in just 4 years, ps5 already caught up to the PS4's. Congratulations.

JackBNimble1d 5h ago

That happens when half of your games are cross platform. I'm still waiting to see what the ps5 is capable of, because they sure haven't pushed any limits.

And where are all these ps5 exclusive games?

sagapo1d 23h ago

Not really surprised as Sony barely has any competition at the moment.

10 Biggest Xbox Mistakes of All Time (So Far)

The Xbox brand has done a lot of good over the years, but their various blunders are pretty wild to look back on in their magnitude.

Ironically number 9 can save them at this point (releasing games on multiple platforms)

ChasterMies6d ago

By “save them” you mean make more profit for Microsoft. Xbox will still be a dying hardware platform.

OtterX6d ago

You could add the naming scheme for the consoles, it just confuses customers. I know they wanted to avoid traditional numbering bc it would always be lower than their competitor, but this whole 360 then One then Series thing is confusing af. Imagine a Soccer Mom trying to figure this stuff out. I still mistakenly call the Series X the One from time to time on accident.

RNTody6d ago

Don't forget about the Xbox One, Xbox One X and Xbox Series X! Good luck to Soccer moms around the world.

S2Killinit6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

They did that on purpose to confuse and direct attention away from the generational numbering.

MS doesn’t like reminding people that they joined the industry after others had already been involved in gaming.

For instance, they called the xbox “360” to combat PlayStation “3” because they wanted to seem like “more” than “3”, so instead of xbox 2, they opted for xbox 360. Also this had the additional benefit of selling consoles to uninformed parents who might purchase a “360” instead of a “3” by mistake, or because they thought 360 was more than 3. Kind of a disingenuous move.

They have been continuing with their confusing naming patterns for pretty much the same reasons. Frankly, it fits with who and what they are as a brand.

FinalFantasyFanatic5d ago

I can understand their reasoning, but whoever came up with that naming scheme should be fired, bad naming schemes have killed consoles (I'm pretty sure it was the major reason for the downfall of the WiiU). They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo and Sega have had for their consoles, far less confusing for the consumer.

rob-GP2d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic "They should have had unqiue names like Nintendo..."

lol, you mean:

NES, SNES
GameBoy, GameBoy Advanced, GameBoy Colour, GameBoy SP
DS, DSi, DSXL
3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL
Wii, Wii U
Switch, Switch OLED

Phil Spencer is the worst that has happened to Xbox.
They built a respectable brand up to Xbox one. Then this guy took over and things became a joke

Reaper22_6d ago

He still has his job. Something you can't say about Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga6d ago

Both bad execs. One is on job and one thankfully retired.

FinalFantasyFanatic5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I didn't like either person, both people damaged their respective brands and produced worse outcomes, but Phil did save the Xbox brand from being retired by Microsoft. Although in hindsight, he should have just let it die, rather than languish in limbo like it is now.

Rainbowcookie5d ago

Yeah but the one that was "bad" didn't even affect sales.

bunt-custardly6d ago

Phil Spencer was also on the team back when 360 was around, alongside Shane Kim, Peter Moore etc. I think the damage that did the most harm was the Don Mattrick "Always Online" console (ahead of its time basically). They handed Sony and Nintendo a free-pass when that was revealed. It went downhill from there. Then the corporate machine went into full swing to try and recover. They have to a degree as a games company for the masses, and less so for the core gamer. Outside USA, the Xbox brand does not sell as well as Japanese based consoles (citation needed).

Cacabunga6d ago

Want a decision maker. The always online and TV plans was a disaster yes, but they caught up by announcing 1st party games that gamers actually kept the hype going.. until this moron took over and introduced the PC day one release.. e all know where that ended..

S2Killinit6d ago

I dont think they were ever a respectable brand, not since the beginning, when their goal was never to be involved and share in the gaming space. I think the OG xbox was an exception because MS as a brand was still getting its foot in and so the people behind that were people of the gaming industry.

FinalFantasyFanatic5d ago

The 360 was the brand in its prime though, everything went downhill towards the end of that generation. Its staple games like Halo, Forza and Gears are what kept the console relevant and afloat for so long.

MaximusPrime_6d ago

Really good video.

I remember the days with RRoD was big news on here, N4G.

Microsoft had it turbulence number of years.

Looking at the success of Sea of Thieves despite being 6 years old, time to release Halo, Forza horizon 4 & 5 on PS5. It'll help their revenue

shinoff21836d ago (Edited 6d ago )

2 of the 4 games they did already sold really well. So it's definitely going down. Idk about halo or forza but I feel those studios they've bought in the last 5 years, their coming

ChasterMies6d ago

I found this video painful to watch. Can someone list them out?

Top 10 for me from are:
1. 2013 reveal presentation
2. Bundling Kinect 2 with Xbox One
3. RRoD or why rushing to market with hardware is always a bad idea.
4. Buying studios only to close them.
5. Ads on the Home Screen
6. Letting Halo die.
7. Letting Geard of War die.
8. Every console name
9. Charging for Xbox Live on Xbox 360 when Sony let PS3 players play online for free.
10. Cancelling release of OG Xbox games after the Xbox 360 launched.
