What Is the Game of the Generation?

IGN - It's a tough question, but Game Scoop! got together with hundreds of fans to talk it out and we may have a winner.

WilliamH4082d ago

Super Mario Galaxy, just one level of that game has more brilliance than 90% of any other full game. Nintendo can really stun when they want to.

OrionNoctis4082d ago

Galaxy was awesome! ,but this is a very tough question...lemme think

BlindGuardian4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

impossible to mention just one, so here's ten in random order:

Bioshock
Metal Gear Solid 4
Uncharted 2
Super Mario Galaxy
Mass Effect 2
Demon's Souls
The Witcher 2
Batman Arkham City
Call of Duty 4
Fallout 3

but it's too soon for this, The Last of Us, Beyond, GTA5 and MGS5 are still coming to this gen, and Bioshock Infinite and Tomb Raider are too recent for them to sink in to their proper place for this gen

edit: for the sake of argument I think we should leave Half Life 2 out of this because it predates the 360

guitarded774082d ago

I think the game of this generation should be something new to this generation. As great a MGS4 is, it is a sequel from gens before. If there is a game of this gen, it should be broken down to different categories... Ex. Shooter, RPG, Indie... It's just too limiting to say "THIS GAME REPRESENTS ALL". Games are too diverse.

MYSTERIO3604082d ago

Yeah, I don't think i can pick a single title....Well at least not now. There's still some great titles on the way. I think after the next gen launches it will be possible to decide.......Well on at least 5 games anyway.

darren_poolies4082d ago

Demon's Souls or Dark Souls. The latter is my favourite game of all time.

irepbtown4082d ago

BlindGuardian, totally agree with that list. However I thought about it and tried to narrow it down.
(No particular order)

Metal Gear Solid 4
Uncharted 2
Call of Duty 4

Call of duty 4 was a real game changer. Even today it is a great game to play. Campaign and Online were great experiences. You really feel this friendship with yourself and Captain Price, Gaz, and the rest. (SPOILER)

To see them die at the end was really saddening. I never feel like that towards any game.

MGS4/Uncharted2 were astonishing. The graphics were amazing and gameplay just as good. I can't say too much about them because I don't need to. They are that good!

There will be games that I've missed however these 3 stand out. I'm leaning towards Metal Gear Solid 4 at this current time. Things will change once PS4 is released and we look back.

NewMonday4081d ago

IMOO these games are the most important(not necesarly the best):

*GoW1, I don't personally like GoW games but the first was the game to take console gaming to another level this generation.

* MW2, the explosion of the MP craze.

* Assasins Creed

* RDR/Skyrim best open world games this gen

* Batman AC , taking Metrovidania to 3D

* Uncharted 2 best single player TPS/adventure game this gen

* Journey, best artistic game

Lykon4081d ago

The gay version of COD called 'Banged up two' on the commodore 64 was good

jeseth4081d ago

As many great games as there are/were this gen, its hard for me to pick another game that changed console gaming more than COD4 : Modern Warfare.

MW blew up the console MP scene and created a juggernaut that took over all the big Console ambassadors Mario, Kratos, and Chief.

MW also became the mold in which hundreds of other games tried to replicate but couldn't.

Personally Uncharted, Gears of War, Assassin's Creed, LBP, MGS4, Bioshock, Valkyrie Chronicles, Heavy Rain, Red Dead Redemption, etc. etc. all ring in my head. But none of them created the phenomonon that COD did with MW.

I think a lot of us can agree they are wearing out the formula but MW was/is the game that really catapaulted console online insanity. Halo was there before it, but MW created an entire culture of console gaming.

Such a tough question.

InMyOpinion4081d ago (Edited 4081d ago )

Portal 1 & 2 would be on my list.

Trials, Dark Souls, FarCry 3, Super Mario Galaxy 2, L.A. Confidential. And of course Uncharted 2 and probably 50 more titles :)

Dynasty Warriors 7:Empires. I don't care if you said you will never buy another DW game again you NEED to buy DW7:Empires. The Stratagems, Fame Types, and Strong Allies not only breathes totally fresh life into the stale as 3 month old bread DW franchise, but returns it to its former glory it had way back in 2001 when DW3 came out.

DatNJDom814082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

Dude, while I dont agree that this is the game of the generation, I will say that DW7 Empires surprised the hell out of me. When Im not on God of War Multiplayer, Im on DW7 Empires. I have Lord Varys in my army....... Lord Varys....... Freaking awesome game!

We will see each other in the battlefield!

RememberThe3574082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

Right when I read "DW3" I got that feeling only DW3 a player get. If DW7: Empires is as good as your saying I have to have it. I've wanted that DW3 experience for years now.

@EDIT: We don't have it in the States? NOOOO!

LordHiggens4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

Uhhhhh.....no bro....no I'm going to go with the first Mass Effect.

rezzah4082d ago

Can you list the 90% please because I'm not sure if I missed 1 or 2 games.

ILive4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

I have to say uncharted 2 because it felt like a turning point this gen. Something about the game felt like pure magic. Honorable mentions includes heavy rain, la noire, batman aa, journey, and witcher 2 because of how unique of an experience they were.

This is off topic, but i think resistance 3 has the best fps single player experience this gen. I have not played bioshock yet, but when I do I will make the final call. But until then, this stands.

rezzah4082d ago

UC2 is a very good choice. It is the most awarded game in the history of gaming. Over 150 awards during the E3 presentation.

Also, UC2 as impacted many games that came after it. What it popularized was stunning cinematic scenes. Even the personality of Drake was adapted into various characters.

In terms of Single Player mode, R3 is a great experience. But it does lack when compared to Bioshock.

Of course it is all opinions, so the final decision is always left to the individual.

Kennytaur4082d ago

Maybe that one level, but there's a lot of less interesting ones in Galaxy, and the underwater swimming was piss poor thanks to the locked and otherwise perfect camera. I love Galaxy, but I wouldn't call it the best game of this generation.

ijust2good4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

Gears of War 1 - for revolutionizing Third person shooter. Before Gears, i hated third person shooters. I only ever enjoyed GTA and it was cause its GTA. Gears took the over the top shoukder shooting of Resident Evil 4, mixing it with cover system and blind fire of an under-rated game from PS2 called "Kill Switch". All modern third person shooter owes it to this game.

CoD - to changing the first person shooter world for ever. You can't complain when the franchise sold over 120 million copies and counting. No doubt it made its mark. For better or for worse, every shooter has something that CoD did in terms of gameplay.

Mass effect - for story driven gaming. This game really got me into the story and the universe of mass effect and i don't think i've ever been that excited this gen of a story in a game since MGS last gen. The ending of ME3 was disappointing but it was still a great game to play.

Original Crysis - for Graphics. It was released on PC back in 2007 and it was way ahead of its time in graphics department. Sadly the franchise has always been about graphics and the gameplay and story were very average.
-----------------------------

Other notables are Bioshock, Uncharted, Arkham City, Red dead & Assassins creed.

HammadTheBeast4082d ago

Gears of War didn't revo.utionize anything, it streamlined it a bit and put it's own taste. Max Payne had similar cover mechanics long ago, as well as other games.

Bioshock IMO did more for FPS then CoD, all CoD did was simplify things and let casuals think they were good at something. Mass Effect was pretty good, but I think there's still some gems to come.

Btw, this is merely my opinion, I respect yours and you make some good points.

DonFreezer4082d ago

Gears of Wars for me also if you we exclude Mario who stays on top.I had never seen anything like it when I played the 1st one.PS drones can cry all they want Gears Of War was the reason most people got into third person shooters.

MysticStrummer4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

So Gears copied other games, yet all modern 3rd person shooters owe it to Gears? Gears sold a lot of 360s for Microsoft, but I'd bet there are few in the industry who would name it Game of the Generation.

I have to disagree with all your choices actually, but of course it's all subjective.

You contradict yourself talking about CoD. You admit it's had some negative influences on other shooters by saying "for better or worse", therefore you can complain when other shooters change what made them good so they can be more like CoD and try to sell more, which never works anyway.

Mass Effect, I tried to get into it, I really did. I bought the trilogy even after the demos made me yawn, shrug, and delete them. The story was well told but the shooting was so bland I had to force myself to finish the 1st game and start the 2nd, before finally trading the game in without ever reaching the 3rd. If I want to play a game with bad shooting where I can influence the story, I'd rather play Alpha Protocol to be honest.

Crysis was a PC game first and PCs have no generations, as the PC folk love to tell us here on N4G, so there's no reason to mention the title, especially when you admit it was all about graphics with average gameplay and story.

Your "other notables" are all more worthy of Game of the Generation mentions than your primary ones, in my opinion, though Demon's Souls is my pick.

telekineticmantis4082d ago

It is fun, but not the most memorable experience.

showtimefolks4082d ago

I believe this isn't like GOTY and everyone will have a different choice and in some cases more than one game

For me personally

Ratchet and clank tools of destruction: the 1st time I played the movie it felt like watching a PIXAR movie and it was so much fun to play and till this day one of my favorite and very under rated game

MGS4: for me this is when next gen began even though I had xbox360 and ps3 for quite a while before this came out

Uncharted 2: no words can describe what Uncharted felt to me personally, the promise in UC1 was there but ND really stepped up their productions value for this

Heavy Rain: when this launched I said a game with all QTE nah I am not interested than picking it up at launch and just can't describe how it felt. In my 20 plus years of playing games a game has never made me uncomfortable with choices as much as Heavy Rain

Fallout 3 the 1st time you come out of the Vault, that feeling can't be matched until Fallout 4 that is

yakuza series on ps3 is my #1 favorite series of all time, and yakuza 3 just had an amazing story

For me these were the games, one last game was Mass Effect 1, I know ME2 to some is better but ME1 gave you so many more options and choice when it came to actual RPG

Eyeco4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

Why did he get so many disagrees for that ? its not like he listed COD as game of the generation, in all fairness Super Mario Galaxy is better suited for the title than any other game here considering its the highest rated exclusive this gen, and really it appeals to everyone young, old, male, female, hardcore, casual.

It may not be my personal favourite but if someone was to call it the GOTG I wouldnt argue or disagree with that because its a very strong choice, In the same way I wouldnt disagree with someone calling Citizen Kane or The Godfather the best movies of all time, not my personal pick but a very good choice none the less.

My personal pick for GOTG would be between GTA4, Fallout 3, MGS 4 and LBP, SKYRIM, Red Dead.

Hellsvacancy4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

Skyrim? really, it was a good game, really enjoyable, but it was a broken game when it came to retail, thats not good

Some of my personal favorites are Demon Souls, Max Payne 3, Ni No Kuni, Portal 2 and Red Dead

MysticStrummer4082d ago

@DonFreezer - Come back when you realize his opinion is just as valid as yours. Also, check the GotY scoreboard. Also, get me a beer while you're up.

josephayal4082d ago

Mario Galaxy 2 is way better

Picnic4082d ago

I haven't played Super Mario Galaxy because I wouldn't buy a Wii just to play that plus Donkey Kong Returns.
But, still, the concept looks lovely and even if it is casual, sometimes the concept can rule.

_QQ_4081d ago

It's not a casual game, but casuals can play and enjoy it. there's a difference.

jakmckratos4082d ago

What the hell? It's a great game do not get me wrong...but it's got to be a game that defines a generation..and super mario almost stands alone as a greatplatformer(with the exception of Littlebigplanet and Rathet and Clank...of which Ratchet's games were my favorite of that group). But between the fact most of us are between 16-35 I think it would be proper to pick an HD game that was actually representational of the majority of games that we enjoyed...that being said it should still stand out amongst the crowd. That being said it's Uncharted 2. Super Mario Galaxy can be the best "Kids" game that everybody played but honestly it's not like it had revolutionary gameplay, crazy graphics or even a real cohesive story that highlights how cinematic video games have become. It's like comparing a Pixar movie to Avengers..sure everyone LOVES pixar and they make stellar movies but you can't just say Brave was better than the Avengers..different criteria and different genre's. Uncharted 2 was epic and revolutionary i so many ways and it's quite easy to see how several games try to emulate something from it being the story-telling or the way the world's progress.

MysticStrummer4082d ago

Demon's Souls for me. Between the oppressive environments, "real" feeling combat, the thrill of my game being invaded by another player, and the nearly non-existent checkpoint system, I've never played a game that had me feeling like I was in danger like Demon's Souls did. It kept me tense the whole time, wondering if I should press forward or turn back to spend my collected souls and level up.

Dark Souls was a close second, and there were things I liked better about it, but overall they made it easier and less oppressive feeling so Demon's Souls is my choice.

Reverent4081d ago

I want to think I enjoyed another game more than Demon's/Dark Souls... But damn... I can't think of any. I completely agree; Demon's/Dark Souls just made me feel like I was reliving my childhood of classic, hardcore RPG's again.

chadboban4081d ago

Same can be said for all fanboys, if it's a great game on a system they don't own they'll find any way they can to hate on it. Even if they've never played it.

People with more than one console are more capable of a less bias stance on what the game of the generation is. Although, like its shown in the video here as well as in this comments section, there is no real way to determine the GOTG because it's different for everyone.

Kinda wish folks would stop with the hating. We're all gamers, we should all be able to get along without flinging shit at each other due to our differences in opinions.

GamersRulz4082d ago

I would go with MGS4 myself, Journey close second.

punisher994081d ago

Calling a game as movie is the biggest compliment you could ever give it. Because that means its just not some mindless fps game.

fantasygamer4082d ago

I'd say its between Uncharted 2, LittleBigPlanet 2 or Demon Souls.

dungeonboss4082d ago

Depends on the genre...
Action/Adventure: Uncharted
Platformer: Super Mario Galaxy 1/2
RPG: Xenoblade Chronicles
Racing: Forza 4

I guess it also depends on the mood I'm in at the time, but I've pretty much enjoyed every second of all of those games above for hundreds and hundreds of hours.

OrionNoctis4082d ago (Edited 4082d ago )

i think driving games as good as they can be dont quite fit in this category cause the feeling you get playing those is the adrenaline nothing new there...a game to earn such title needs to move with few more things besides adrenaline....
besides that its all good i supose, but its my opinion
didnt disagreed with yours jus feelt like sharing my point with you...

Honky Kong4082d ago

your list looks pretty solid to me.
but it seems alot of folks dont agree....

dungeonboss4080d ago

Haha, yeah. Must be folks that only can afford a single console. I would have added more genres with more time and thought.
For fighting games, I'm in love with DOA5 and Tekken Tag 2, my absolute favorite FPS of this gen would probably be Half Life 2: Episode 2, although I like COD:MW 1&2. I could have also made a distinction between JRPG and WRPG, as I like Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

Man, this is tough, there were just a shit ton of good games this gen. Some people are too blind to realize that every console had amazing games across this generation.

There are different games. Some have gamplay at it highest priority, some have the story, some have the replay value and choices... There are a lot of different game experiences.

It is laughable that just now graphics does not have anything to do with that experiene. We have had many games of that type over time. This is just the one that have come closest to feel like playing an actual movie. Just look the the Digital foundry walkthrough it is a masterpiece in that perspective and hence wrth trying. But yes do not do it for the gameplay - but that was never the goal of this experience.

GamerRN7d ago

It's because it's on Xbox. When Xbox has amazing graphics, they don't matter. When PlayStation does, it's a game changer!

Lightning777d ago

Pretty much my thoughts. They were technical marvel's on PS and still are. The moment Xbox puts out a graphically intense game is doesn't matter suddenly.

4 years ago this month would the UE5 tech demo debut with the girl flying (tech demo said it was only possible on PS5 because of the SSD. Glad to finally see it in its glory.

fr0sty7d ago

FFS, gaming journalism has really gone downhill. At least hire people with a basic grasp of grammar... "Me neither" means the exact opposite of what the "author" is trying to say. That's like saying "I could care less"... lol.

S2Killinit7d ago

Maybe because the gameplay being dull allowed it to have the amazing graphics and people are not as impressed by graphics alone anymore? I mean there is a lot of sites saying the story and the gameplay are lackluster. So what are we supposed to enjoy then? Cgi graphics are beautiful but since they arent interactive, they dont impress me as much as they used to. Thats an extreme example, but you get my drift.

Terry_B7d ago

When Playstation (Sony) does it..its usually a great game and not a cinematic experience..or at least something new at the time..like Until Dawn back in 2015.

1Victor7d ago

@gamer:” It's because it's on Xbox. When Xbox has amazing graphics, they don't matter. When PlayStation does, it's a game changer!”

The game looks as good as any other PlayStation game in my eyes why can’t you and the other hardcore Xbox be happy about it and drag PlayStation into every conversation and force PlayStation hardcore to look into the game and find flaw that most games have in one way or another.
@light: “ 4 years ago this month would the UE5 tech demo debut with the girl flying (tech demo said it was only possible on PS5 because of the SSD. ”
Yes at that time it was only possible on PlayStation SSD how ignorant of you to think that after 4 years the technology wouldn’t evolved and move to a industry standard 🤦🏿I wish your mentality wasn’t so naive and narrow to post stuff like that 😩 in a year or 2 a new game will come out that might look better, it’s the nature of the industry.

Now that the distraction is gone I feel that is a good thing that the graphics in games are starting to hit the rooftop and hopefully the developers will put more thoughts into story and gameplay mechanics than just the next shiny oily skin of old.

Reaper22_7d ago

So true. Not surprised by all the negativity. It's a really good game and looks better than any game I've ever seen. GOTY nominee for sure. Like I said before, sony screwed up big time by not purchasing Ninja Theory.

Asplundh6d ago

Pretty much. It's like how the Switch and Steam controller using haptic feedback in their controllers wasn't a big deal but then Sony did it and it was then a "game changer".

We've had graphical gamechangers before, such as Crysis but those games still had gameplay to compliment it. Hellblade pretty much has none, and only achieved such graphics through being incredibly linear and having very small, closed off environments where very little is happening.

Vx_6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

GFX does not mean anything if the game is boring. It is simple like that and these major companies need to understand this simple concept.

Games are like your lady, she may be beautiful to look at for a while but then it gets boring if her character isn't interesting and fun to be with.

vgvill16d ago

Too dated in my book. The AI is way too unpredictable to be acceptable today. It's definitely a game of its time.

Jingsing15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Agreed with those sentiments. The quality of the CPU controlled characters make or break a stealth game and they are pretty poor in all the Splinter Cell games by today's standard. This is what led me to playing Spies vs Mercs all the time in later games just to get a better stealth experience from a real person. Arguably Sony are making better stealth games albeit not Tom Clancy stuff.

TheProfessional15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

You should stick with fortnite or one of the countless bloodborne style games then. What a joke.

rlow115d ago

I had a good time with the game. It is a product of its time. But when it came out it was a must have game for a lot of people. I wish Ubisoft would make another game in the series or at least a reboot.

vgvill15d ago

They are making a remake, I think. I loved the original game when it was released, but I tried to play it again in recent years and just couldn't get on with it. The same with the older Hitman games.

PrecursorOrb15d ago

Yeah chaos theory still holds up though I gotta say. If you’re a fan of the series I highly suggest you go back to that one. Ubi has said they are remaking sc for “modern audiences”. I don’t have a lot of faith for the future of that company

Chocoburger15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Due to the lack of modern stealth games, and me constantly playing the MGS series, I've been looking for alternative stealth games to play, and went back and re-played the SC series recently. I wouldn't call SC1 or SC:PT masterpieces, there are AI issues, they're very much trial-and-error games, and that can lead to a lot of frustration. I also found the stories in this series to be boring, uninteresting, and just sloppily told. Cinematics are also of poor quality for both in-game scenes and CG cut-scenes, the soundtrack didn't leave any impression on me either.

Chaos Theory is better, but there was still a lot of room for improvement, and Double Agent (old gen ver.) was a sloppy mess that ended up a regression from CT. But still, at least they tried back then, these days Ubi-junk doesn't even try to make good games!

HvNzSoul7d ago

Everyone needs to quit with all of the unnessacery Ubi-hate. SC Conviction and Blacklist are both still good games.

HvNzSoul7d ago

Everyone needs to quit with all of the unnecessary Ubi-hate. SC Conviction and Blacklist are both still good games, they just weren't 100% focused on stealth with Conviction and they remedied that in Blacklist. The only thing they have released recently that I was disappointed with was Watch Dogs Legion, and Skull & Bones. Everyone seems to be salty about the misleading trailer for the original Watch Dogs and The Division. Which are also, both good games, and actually Watch Dogs seems like it was ahead of its time even with all the trailer drama (having gone back and played recently, can say the game didnt deserve all the flak). Yeah the misleading E3 trailer that had better graphics than release is understandable to a very small degree, when most Teaser Trailers, or Game Demo's only have that portion of the game developed so they use the highest quality assets of w/e they have being showed, or what they are showing was made purely for the showing, allowing for extra polish . As to the gripes about minor game design changes, or cut features upon a games release just goes to show how unknowledgeable most gamers are in terms of how game development works or to even understand what what the hell a WIP, let alone titles still in early development.

Good games from Ubi since 2014 (Year that SC Blacklist Released) include:

Watch Dogs 1 & 2
The Division 1 & 2 (Although I had a hard time getting into The Division 2 at first)
R6 Siege
Ghost Recon Wildlands & Breakpoint
Immortals Fenyx Rising
AC Origins, Odyssey, MIrage (Haven't finished Valhalla games too damn long)
Far Cry Primal, and 5 (6 also has a length issue)
Avatar Frontiers of Pandora
Prince Of Persia The Lost Crown

Haven't played a couple of titles those being For Honor (played at launch but didn't honestly give it an actual go), The Crew, R6 Extraction and at the time of writing this xDefiant.

Even if you absolutely hated any of the above titles, they aren't inherently bad games, they're just good, but not always top quality either.

I say give Ubi credit where credit is due, they at least fix games post launch if they start out rough, Breakpoint is an excellent example this and is such an enjoyable experience now compared to it's launch.
