Apple presents biggest threat to home consoles, say game luminaries

Yahoo Games: Two video game VIPs are cautioning that the company could have a much larger and potentially devastating impact on the home console market.

Valve Software co-founder Gabe Newell and Nat Brown, who was one of the first engineers on Microsoft's Xbox project, have issued warnings about Apple's potential threat. The alerts come amid analyst speculation that Apple may hold an Apple TV-related special event next month.

Listen home consoles will always be around, games made for PS/Xbox will never be outdone by games on iOS.. Plus i think next gen we will see alot of iOS/andriod games on the PSN and xbox live... maybe thats why Sony is going with a touchpad type of controller.. think about temple run on PSN being played with the touch pad DS4? =)

P.S. console will never die or be in danger.. and idk why ppl would want it to die?? we just have to keep supporting the great games we have on these consoles.. bcuz GTA/FIFA/Madden/COD. most genres for me are not fun with touch controlled and it just doesnt feel the same.

PhantomT14124122d ago

I agree, for me it's two different markets.

adorie4122d ago (Edited 4122d ago )

I've been following Apple for the last 6 months.
I'm not business savvy, but I'm intelligent enough to see common sense.

As we know Apple is sitting on 10's of billions.
We know their line-up has started to stagnate
We know their share price has devalued

Some interesting people within the industry(gaming) have come out and expressed concerns about Apple legitimately joining the industry, just to ruin it(subjectivity)

What am I getting at here?
Apple has been getting aggressive, towards their competitiors and within their own company.
Should Apple decide this industry is something they want to expand towards, then we're in for things we probably won't like.

People here are too complacent with how things are or were.. all the back-patting and reassurance doesn't mean squat to the tune of 65+ billion in cash.

I'll probably get disagrees, and that's ok. But even I can see them as a threat to what people call "The Big 3"

nirwanda4122d ago

I think the biggest threat to apple is Nvidea, if all the new android smart phones adopt the new chip then you have a stable standard games can be based around.

DeadlyFire4120d ago (Edited 4120d ago )

I think personally Apple has a chance to destroy the Android gaming consoles coming up with their setup with Apple TV. Its a small box under $100 bucks at $99. It has no more power than Ouya(12 Gflop max) or it would cost more. Cloud gaming on it could happen, but its not 100% with bandwidth still a large concern for that.

panbit864122d ago

Yeah right... because angry birds and fruit ninja is the "future" of gaming! wtf?!

CommonSenseGamer4122d ago

Yeah, cause smartphone and tablet gaming is all about angry birds.

My prediction is that both the next box and ps4 will sell less than their predecessors. Why? Because casual gamers are needed to ensure consoles sell ongoing. Those casual gamers have more and more options for gaming in the years ahead.

classic2004122d ago (Edited 4122d ago )

Actually casual got many choices for a while now and it as not stop console or even PC steam sales lol.

You make it sound like casual gamers care what is out there, if they did care then they would have joined forces with the nintendo fans and get some wiiu dont you think.

Zynga don't look too good also

Hicken4122d ago

Actually, that's just about right.

The majority of smartphone gaming is simple little stuff like Doodle Jump. That's not sufficient enough to sustain the gaming industry. Hell, the casual market, period, isn't enough. It's caused a large boom in growth, but there are ONLY two options for the casual crowd:

Give up and move on to something else the same way they moved into gaming,

OR

Become core gamers, and want more than just little time wasters.

The large number of casual gamers WILL NOT sustain the industry, because their interest is only casual. It's passing, not serious, and not something you should ever rely on for any lengthy period of time.

Casual gamers HAVEN'T been needed thus far; why are they suddenly needed now? To keep up the same level of sales we've been seeing? It's called a "bubble" for a reason.

YOU hope casual gaming becomes bigger, because it's all YOU want to play. Casual gaming has its place, but it's not as a major influential factor in the industry.

Sorry.

MaxXAttaxX4122d ago

You're totally right. That mobile Mass Effect Infiltrator game is so much better than the console/PC games.
/s

CommonSenseGamer4121d ago

@Nathan:

So many discount touch screen gaming as nothing but casual. 2 years ago would you even have thought ME: Infiltrator would have been possible on a smartphone/tablet. Sure you were being sarcastic but smartphone/tablet gaming is evolving fast. Next gen mobile hardware will eclipse what the devices can do today and so open the door to even more possibilities.

Smartphone/tablet gaming may have originated from a truly casual background but that's no longer the case.

I'll bet if Sony opened the Vita to the Play Store that Vita owners would embrace it, not just for the games but for the many apps now available.

MaxXAttaxX4121d ago

Not the point. I'm not doubting the success of mobile.
It doesn't matter how better the graphics. You can have any major franchise name on mobile, like Mass Effect for example, but it won't be as good.

Get it through your heads. A touchscreen alone is extremely limiting for gaming. And this isn't about apps.

Sony shares big new PS Plus stat, but not the one we want to see

PlayStation Plus has improved the split of PS4 and PS5 players on its priciest tiers, but Sony continues to hide total subscriber numbers.

lol acting like it’s equivalent to ms numbers

Mr Logic9h ago

Uh...They're definitely not equivalent.

"Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass service now has 34 million subscribers."

"the total number of PS Plus subscribers across all tiers was 47.4 million"

darthv729h ago(Edited 9h ago)

That PSN number seems like it should be much higher... especially when you consider that PS4 alone has a sell through of over 117m. To not even be at least half that is rather interesting.

To the XB side, having 34m to an install base of roughly 50m (XBO sell through) or even 85m (360 sell through) is a greater percentage of unit to member ratio than PSN.

bloop5h ago

That's not the "gotcha" you think it is Darth.

shinoff21838h ago(Edited 8h ago)

What. Definitely more os plus subscribers but that makes sense due to actual console sales

Darth the difference between the bases are huge your right but you gotta think. Ps players buy more games, where as the Xbox base relies on gamepass for their gaming. So it makes perfect sense

darthv728h ago(Edited 8h ago)

What makes perfect sense though? You say PS players buy more games... so then logically there should be more PS+ subscribers given the increased number of online multiplayer games in the PS4 generation alone. The PS4 was the first time that + was required for online play much like Gold was for 360 users.

Keep in mind we are talking subscribers, not simply XB/PS users. I assume you meant to say offline single player games, which is most likely true as well. That gen also saw a significant increase in games with an online component comparted to the previous gen.

victorMaje7h ago

I for one will be going back to essential at the next renewal. When I feel a game is good & right up my alley, I’ll check trusted reviews & just buy it.

jznrpg6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

I have the top tier until 2028 as they gave me a massive discount for all the years I had left but I’ll most likely go to essential as well. I buy my games but my kids do use the service occasionally. They do prefer to own their games as well since any game can leave the rental service at some point and they don’t like that idea. They mostly use it to demo games then ask me to buy games if they really like it.

RedDevils2h ago

For me, I will cancel it all together but unfortunately I still have it till 2030 lol

meganick6h ago

I would like to see Sony add a fourth tier of PS Plus for people who just want to be able to play games online without any of the perks like monthly games, store discounts, or anything like that, and it should cost $20 annually, $30 maximum. There’s no way I’m paying $80 just to play games online. Even the original $60 fee was too much, and I would often wait for sales to re-up my subscription.

P_Bomb2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Essential is too expensive, I agree. We’ve got one Essential and one Premium sub. Dropping the Premium when it expires.

Sony Says The PS5 Is Its “Most Profitable Generation To-Date"

During Sony’s recent business segment meeting and investor presentation regarding its game and network services, the PlayStation company revealed that PlayStation 5 is the company’s “most profitable generation to-date.”

It’s the top slide of the presentation, showing that in its first four years, the PS5 generation has already hit $106 billion in sales, having almost caught up to the PS4’s total $107 billion generated.

Operating income for the PS5 generation has also already surpassed that of the PS4, having now reached $10 billion.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I wouldn't doubt it. They released a high quality system. A lot of high quality games from themselves and their support of 3rd party developers and indies. They released many high quality remakes and remasters. They released a high quality GaaS game going against the naysayers thinking Sony would abandon single player games. And they most likely are profiting a lot more than PS1, PS2 PS4 and the loss leading PS3 that drained all their profits.

Now, I'll wait to see what's cooking tomorrow. But can you use some of those profits to better support your high quality VR headset? Because, by supporting it, you can sell more games and more systems and make more profits?

jznrpg2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

I want RPGs for PSVR2! Good ones of course

shinoff21831d 23h ago

If it had some rpgs I would buy right fking now. It looks dope and alot of fun, but it's biggest game resident evil 4(maybe) I've got no interest in. I'm not a fan of racing games, even with that metro game coming i was never much into that series. Rpgs would be fantastic.

MrNinosan1d 20h ago

Lemme know if ya wanna play some Zenith 🙌
Bought it at release, but haven't played it more than 1-2 hours but for sure on my "todo list".

Cacabunga1d 20h ago

Normal when they released mostly cross gen games so far. That’s a lot of money saved..
We haven’t seen what PS5 can do yet. 4years in and PS4 games still look great to me. The gen leap isn’t quite there yet.

--Onilink--1d 22h ago

The interesting metric for me is the $106billion in operating income/profit (not sales as mentioned in the article) reaching the same as the PS4 did with only half the consoles sold.

In particular because they all are supposed to be making the most per hardware sold after a few years when manufacturing costs are down.

So even putting inflation aside(and the higher console price), it is interesting that they could reach PS4 $ with just half the consoles sold.

Maybe there is more to the metric thats whats seen at face value, but they have clearly been making a lot more money than before on the software side (with also less games released I suppose, given its only been half the generation so far)

VersusDMC1d 21h ago

The bulk of the money has to be coming from the 30% cut on all games and microtransactions. Especially on all the free to play juggernauts like genshin, apex, fortnight, etc.

--Onilink--1d 19h ago (Edited 1d 19h ago )

@Versus

They are definitely making a lot on that for sure (which the $70 price increase factors into as well), but its not like many of those games werent around for the PS4 too.

They might be counting the gen as a whole and not just PS5 itself (so extra profit from PC sales, whatever that may be)

PS+ price increase and different tiers probably amount to part of that too.

But in general, its still quite a surprising metric. Half the time, half the consoles sold, less first party games released so far and still already making more of a profit than last gen is quite something, and as mentioned, there is probably more to it that we dont know, after all, since we are talking about operating income, all the expenses they have also factor into it, so it is also possible that they have found ways to significantly reduce that + all the means of increased revenue that appear to be factoring into the equation

All in all, just an interesting situation from a business perspective

porkChop1d 17h ago

It's for the whole generation, so it would likely be including PC. They also make much more profit on digital sales vs retail, and digital is far more prominent these days. The generation also started at the height of COVID when everyone was home, spending far more money on gaming/hobbies. It makes a lot of sense for this gen to be more profitable.

JackBNimble1d 4h ago

That happens when half of your games are cross platform. I'm still waiting to see what the ps5 is capable of, because they sure haven't pushed any limits.

And where are all these ps5 exclusive games?

sagapo1d 22h ago

Not really surprised as Sony barely has any competition at the moment.

Steam Account Transfer Via Will on Death is Not Permitted, Valve Confirms

In case you were curious, a Steam account transfer via will is not permitted according to an official response from Valve.

anast3d ago

The games are theirs. People just pay to ride the ride.

Skuletor2d ago

Would be nice if the article's writer looked into and reported whether other digital game libraries could be transferred over via will (Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo, EGS, EA app, GOG, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Launcher etc) instead of this half-baked piece but it's probably the same for all of them anyway

Kornholic2d ago

This seems like a way bigger issue than mandatory PSN account linking for PlayStation games.

So where is the outcry?

Skuletor2d ago

It's not like PlayStation is doing any different.

"You may not sell, buy, trade, or transfer your Online ID, Account or any personal access to PSN Services through any means or method, including by use of web sites."
https://www.playstation.com...

Kornholic1d 21h ago

So you are that saying Steam is being very anti consumer with its policies. That's why I'm so baffled by the lack of outcry from the PC audience.

NotoriousWhiz2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

It's not like your account just stops working when you die. Include your email, account id, and password in the will (including the password to your email) and your survivors should have no problem using your games.

anast2d ago

PC gamers are a different lot. They don't mind renting their games forever, they don't mind spending money on overpriced equipment, and they don't mind fiddling with settings for hours before they even play the game, but linking a PSN account demands a riot. This is hard to understand, but then again, we all have to draw our lines somewhere.

Skuletor2d ago

You sure talk a lot of nonsense.Go look up the percentage of digital sales compared to physical sales of PS5 games, then tell me again about "renting" games.

mandf2d ago

Overblown funny and 100percent true

anast2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

There is no option at all to buy a physical copy of a PC game... And more people game on consoles for the reasons that make PC gamers a different lot.

VIK21212d ago

it's not so much the linking but the fact that certain countries aren't allowed to access psn...

VIK21212d ago

@anast I have a disc ps5 since launch, initially I bought some disc games, but I can't be bothered to walk to a physical store nowadays... I just buy the titles when they go on special sale or gray market store like CDKeys...

DustMan2d ago

PSN was a different story altogether. It kept people who bought the game from playing in countries that PSN wasn't supported. I never understood the issue anyway.

I don't know if PC stuff is overpriced considering that you can buy a new video card with the same amount of money you'd spend over 5 or 6 years paying to play games online with a console. I'll never pay double to use the same connection. That is what I'll never understand about console gamers. "let me pay an extra hundred & twenty dollars a year to use the same internet I pay for monthly and use on literally every device in my home for free....except for my Playstation"

Extermin8or3_2d ago

@Skuletor about 50-60% of sales are digital for most games. Meaning 40-50% are physical....

anast2d ago

@VIK

You might not but you are not the expectation that creates a universal.

Skuletor2d ago

@Extermin8or3_
Right and where are you getting that information from?
https://www.statista.com/st...

@anast

"Renting games"
In the fourth fiscal quarter of 2023, approximately 77 percent of Sony Corporation's PlayStation gaming sales were generated via digital downloads.

"overpriced equipment"
Some people are willing to pay a premium for better performance, the way you keep talking about the PS5 Pro on N4G proves you're a hypocrite in that regard but whatever, lol

"fiddling with settings for hours before they even play the game"
Most pc games will give the option to scan your system to choose recommended settings or start with moderate settings that will run the game fine but you're free to mess around at your own leisure, to improve performance or quality if you wish to. For those that don't want to, there's free software that can do that for you, such as Nvidia's Geforce or AMD's AMD Catalyst. Geforce Experience even gives you the option of choosing whether to prioritize performance vs image quality with a simple slider for easy optimization, it's not rocket science, like you try make it out to be.

"linking a PSN account demands a riot"
Playstation selling Helldivers 2 in regions without the legal means to create a PSN account by Sony's own standards, then telling people in those regions that already bought the game that they can no longer play the game, isn't a cause for concern? Though you've already heard about that but keep going along with your own narrative because of your weird vendetta against PC on here.

This is hard to understand, but then again, we all have to draw our lines somewhere.

PRIMORDUS2d ago

I don't rent I torrent to keep, if they take them down that's ok I don't care I have them LOL. I do buy PC games but very little as I want full control which is why I torrent to keep them in my collection, and I do not give a fuck what the devs or publishers want. I never did never will.

anast1d 14h ago

@DustMan

Just like you can choose play games on low to barely mid settings for the price of a PS5, you can also choose not to game online on the PS5. So, now you are getting a better gaming experience and not paying extra for online.
