But for now, I'm going to try and answer some that I thought were most important."

First, why the secrecy?

"MS knows who I am. That's why I'm not concerned about self identifying to them in these postings with details only they would know, as some here have pointed out. The people who founded Xbox hw number 10. 1 left to go be the VP of manufacturing at Qualcomm, 1 left to go be the GM of engineering at Zune, 1 left after only 2 months in '99 due to conflicts with toddhol. He works on Surface now. The rest still work on Xbox. I am the only one who left the company entirely."

It shows EXACTLY what went wrong with the Engineering Team in the Xbox Division, as well as upper management, and why the 360 was pushed ahead in spite of (what we now know) as blatant signs that the hardware wasn't ready.

What's even more surprising is that Microsoft is working on even more hardware, including Personal Computers (something a few N4G contributors and myself predicted a while back). Of course, it would bring up a dilemma of not making any clean-cut revenue for their OS and Office Suite for that particular hardware, but they would have full control over both the hardware and software within that package. I'm kind of hoping that Apple, not Microsoft, wins this strategy, mainly because Apple makes great hardware and great software; Microsoft doesn't seem to be particularly gifted in either area.

I'm also hopeful that Microsoft puts greater emphasis in proper staffing and smarter decisions.

Okay, so I have no idea if this is a real story or just a gimmick, but the one thing that gets me is this:

Don’t kid your about apple. They are a tyrant of a company that screws over loyal fans all the time. I bought a dual 866 g4 the day it came out and it had to be replaced with a new g4 4 times. The battery in the ipod is not user serviceable, an x1900 for a g5 cost more than an 8800gt for a pc and the list just goes on and on. Macs are for people who 1. Prefer form over function 2. Are computer illiterate/know nothing about computers 3. Have more money than brains 4. They are enough of sheep to believe what apple tells them and 5. are easily swayed by crafty marketing. Look at the whole 32x pci-e scandal that is going on now. They sell macs as upgradeable but now are locking them down so you can’t upgrade them. Oh yeah and FOR GOD SAKES THEY USE FB-DIMMS!! Name another 5000 dollar home computing device that comes with a 256 meg ati 2600xt? You could buy an alienware monster for that cash. Lets not even get into what you could build on your own for 5 grand.

the PC vs. Mac debate has some really strange points that can be directly compared to the console market...and it leaves a very big question of "why did MS do that?"...

Windows, as an OS, has what?...like a 95% grip still on the market?...that is almost total domination...and that doesn't end with PC consumers...that is global business wide...Macs have had to implement software sharing procedures to get their own machines to run programs that people simply can't live without...

windows succeeded for a number of reasons...but the biggest was in choice...it was easy to make software for...it was easily manipulated...machines running the software were able to be upgraded with 3rd party peripherals and hardware...keeping a huge amount of competition in a market that MS completed owned...

Apple does the opposite...they tailor to a bunch of ignorant art students whom are still convinced that their iBook is better at viewing pictures than a PC (of which has thousands of free software downloads to do way more than what OS "n" will allow on its own)...factor in what you have to do to upgrade one of those things, and it is very obvious as to why they have basically not one measurable amount of the market...

and it doesn't stop there...mac users constantly praised how "safe" the OS is...commenting on how spyware and viruses have no effect on a Mac...while that is true, that is not a strength of the Mac...that is simply that adware creators aren't interested in addressing the 27 people that own a mac...they are more interested in the billions that use windows...its not that its a better OS...its that its an OS that nobody uses...

now transfer over everything MS has learned in this regard...how they have constantly held that market for over 20 years...and put it towards their Xbox line...and it would seem they learned nothing...

the PS3 behaves more like a PC running windows than the 360 does...the PS3 allows all kind of 3rd party accessories...has options for different OS installs...doesn't force overpriced proprietary HDDs on the user for upgrades...has an open online service, with a built in browser for distributing media in a number of different ways, of which is worth noting does not cost you a dime over your already expensive broadband connection...

the xbox line does more or less exactly what Mac does...and saying "well they want to make money" doesn't hold much weight either, because last I checked they hadn't made enough to buy the office a bucket of KFC...

In either case...expect some changes with MS and their stance on home entertainment...they still have a stranglehold on the business market...but with PC gaming wallowing in a slow and painful death, and very public problems with their biggest piece of released hardware...maybe the next Xbox will answer all of this

I could not believe the lengths people go to to censor news stroies they don't like. Its utterly pathetic and I happily gave this story the last approval it needed to be published. I do the same to any piece of contentious news for the wii or PS3 too - as long as the site didn't look fake. Its news. Is it true? I don't know, but its a story and its not obviously a fake.

If you wish to tell me why this is against news guidelines, I'll happily report it, but I can see from your history you have hardly contributed here at all, and so obviously have no idea what is against the guidelines or not.

On topic: This isn't anything we didn't already know and it is bringing nothing new to the table, except the PS3 fanboys can beat their chest about it.. I got sick of hearing from them from Jan1-Dec31 07 and it looks like it will continue all the way thru 08.

While I've never had a problem with my 360 but have gone thru 2 PS3's already due to faulty BR drives. Even with all the hardware problems, I don't know one person even interested in the PS3 and would rather have a 360. If this is meant as some deterrent to buying a 360, I would say mission failed!

I know 3 friends who had rrod, and i experienced it myself twice. Rrod is the reason why i bought a ps3. Thank you rrod. I know Uncharted is brilliant, and so is HS, but thats all that appeals to me so far for the ps3, and those 2 games are not worth £480. But with the line up for the ps3 i don`t regret buying one, and i have to say, the ps3 is much better than the media made me believe.
In my book there are only two games worth splashing big money over:
1. GRANTURISMO ( the only game i get goose bumps over)
2. Flight Simulator X: i already invested £700 (game+computer upgrades) when it came out, and i am ready to invest some more. It`s the only game that made me play the PC 34 hours with no brakes at all.

Didnt microsoft admit to having huge RRoD problems? I mean, did you really think a console that is THAT loud and puts out THAT much heat was the highest quality Microsoft can produce?

Come on, the first step to not being a fanboy is accepting facts. It may play games, and it might have some very good AAA titles that the PS3 doesnt have, but the XBox360 is the most unreliable console in history.

The PS3 had those issues, if I recall. They postponed launch and fixed them. The Xbox has gained a huge advantage ONLY because they launched first. Without the install base advantage, Bioshock would have never been exclusive, neither would have Gears of War. THey got what they wanted, but now they cant keep up with the huge failures of the Xbox360.

THey sold an unfinished project to millions of consumers, and then you back them up saying RRoD doesnt exist. Get real, especially people like power of green. MICROSOFT DOESNT CARE ABOUT GAMING. They dont make money off of it, and any money they make are pennies to them. They will never make billions, they just want to stop Blu-Ray, and get their HD rentals off the ground. Stop being tools.

Sony isnt much better, but they are first and foremost a gaming console creator. Whether or not you like Blu-ray, its an added feature which you arent forced to use.

I've had 2 RROD SO I'm on my 3rd machine including the 1st RROD which was launch night. Talk about getting off on the wrong foot.

My brother in law manages a WOW store (just like any circuit city or JBHIFI store). He says XB's come back constantly especially the refurbished ones which nearly always come back. One guy got 5 refurbished units, he just kept bringing them back and swapping them.

Meanwhile you guessed it, not ONE PS3 has been returned, either from breakdown or unhappy customers. NOT ONE. Not one Bravia has ever been returned either, but thats beside the point.

I know Bot dont believe me, just like they dont believe this story. Doesn't mean its not true. Put your heads back in the sand. Ignorance is apparently bliss.

I have had 1 rrod, I sent it in and sold it to a friend for dirt cheap who couldn't afford one. It still works and runs quieter then my new one. If my new one breaks I go to walmart buy a new one put old broken one in the box and return it. No waiting. Its a problem but I'm willing to deal with it.

One thing MS will learn from the rrod is not to skip out of testing and they will test the sh*t out of the next xbox.

Reading through this article, we can see that clearly, 360 is not as bad as some people put it. But the issue is in quality control. When you push out a product when you know that its quality is beyond questionable (repeating tests until the product passes), that is pretty insulting to your customers not to mention bad business practice.

As a MS customer, I want to know why my 360 had to be sent in twice to get replaced. It's well within my right to ask questions about a product that I bought. Also, why MS doesn't have a general recall FOR their customers? IF this story has any truth to it, 360 customers should really just demand a recall of products from MS. To own the system and be able to critique the pros and cons of your product is the right way to do things. I have all 3 system, and if there is a fault in a system or game I would gladly point it out, and there certainly are cons in all 3 systems. The idea is to have a sense of reasoning and being able to make fair judgments. To stop reading or listening because there is something you don't agree with will ultimately become ignorance.

On a side note, I made the mistake of buying a MD player and that was a total waste of money. ^^

The xbox 360 is not very "fault-tolerant" and therefore if anything even in the slightest goes wrong in manufacturing, it's most likely going to die. One reason that the PS3 doesn't fail as much is that the Cell is fault tolerant because there are supposed to be 8 cores working but Sony disables one so they can have 7. The only ones that are thrown are the ones below that which are very low % wise. That's also why Xbox's usually fail early rather than late. Makes perfect sense.

Good read. I own both a 360 and a ps3 and as a gamer first i prefer the 360. Nothing malicious, im just a fan of FPS games and I prefer the controller. But I must say Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves with the craftmanship of this system.

Although Tecmo owns the Ninja Gaiden franchise, MS holds exclusive IP rights to Ninja Gaiden 2 as its publisher. The only thing we might see is a brand new Ninja Gaiden for PS3, but not anything related to NG2.

mine just died! R.I.Pieces ... its over. I turned on the 360 to play Gears this morning. It stopped reading the discs. I unplugged all cables, unhooked the HD, plugged it all back in and nothing. It got progressively worse. Now, it blinks 4 RED lights. Usually thats an indication that something is not hooked up properly. Well, I've reviewed the setup and everything looks fine. The system will not boot up. I did get the machine 6 months after release so its an older model.

I was wondering if this happened to anyone else and what your options were?

I’ve owned almost every mainstream system since Calecovision and I’ve never been one to campaign for any ONE console. I owned PS2, PS2 Slim, and two original xboxes and none of them ever gave me any problems. I was however, unfortunately a victim of a launch console RRoD. MS gladly took it back and returned a fresh, shiny one. I ended up selling the one returned from MS, because I snagged an elite while I was waiting for the other to come back. I 100% refuse to buy another! If and/or when this Elite kicks the bucket I will most definitely for the first time ever become a single console owner with my PS3. There is no need for this type of failure in this day and age. You fan boy’s only put your ignorance on display by blindly claiming this is false. Whether this guy is telling the truth or not, the problem exists and we only foster this kind of obvious lack of quality and concern on MS’s part by buying the stuff. I’m guilty, but I won’t be made a fool a 2nd time.

I agree with the first post/comment , as well (or at least the first paragraph)-which the member states that this dude is probably a disgruntled employee. Still, that does not disprove that everything he is saying is true.

I, and many others, have long believed that the Q@A for the machine was thrown out the window to reduce costs and mainly to beat Sony to the punch. Question is, what kind of respectable company would forego the release of a quality piece of hardware to its faithful fans in order to turn a profit?

Answer: A company that cares more about profit than its faithful fans.

I, myself, haven't experienced a RROD yet (knock on wood). I bought mine right after Gears of War came out. The article may not be totally legit, but it's obvious there is/was a lot of crap going on at M$. I would love to be a fly on the wall during some of their team meetings. Can you imagine the finger pointing that must be going on there? No wonder so many execs have jumped ship. By the way, somebody was bashing Apple in an earlier post. While Apple might screw over a faithful customer occasionally, I can't agree that they are the evil empire that some make them out to be. They are the leaders in terms of reliability, innovation, and design. Those are 3 things that Microsoft can't seem to even come close to.
