1.5 stars out of 5 stars is the kind of scoring this industry needs. You cannot fit all games between 5-10 out of 10, no matter how much a publishers spends on advertising or how many fans would be offended.
For me, it’s not access, it’s all because of PS+. I am swimming in games that I don’t have time to play. I cannot justify adding another game to my backlog until the price is at least 50% off.
No. Xbox has to die first. Microsoft is too big, $3T, largest market cap in the world. Microsoft could crush PlayStation simply by outspending them, and then own a total monopoly over gaming in the living room. In this kind of asymmetric warfare, Sony can’t play by Microsoft’s rules.
It was never just PlayStation and Nintendo. Before Xbox, it was Playstation, Nintendo, Sega, and smaller, failed consoles like Neo Geo, Atari Jaguar, and CDi palyers. And I find it hard to see the current landscape as Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo when the only curren gen home consoles are from Xbox and PlayStation.
Sony only has Nintendo as a competitor to the extent that people play their Nintendo Switch games while docked to a TV. That makes up about 30% of Switch usage? And a month those Switch owners, how many have a Xbox or PS5? Microsoft exiting gives Sony the whole pie. But I don’t Microsoft will exit the hardware business. They make enough off their own connected services and games to make Xbox’s dwindling market share profitable.
What clickbait trash is this from … oh, Engadget. Microsoft really did screw up its console business when a gadget site is telling Microsoft to stop making a gadget.
This runs through everything they said when you read between the lines. They are admitting that Xbox marketshare is shrinking (and indeed they disclosed to The Verge that Xbox Game Pass subscriber numbers are shrinking). The only area for growth in games is 3rd party game sales. They don’t want to piss off Xbox owners right now but they will piss them odd later.
“all the rumours”
Some game enthusiasts like to peak behind the curtain, like sports fans who want to know the details of a 5 year contract or movie fans who want to know the box office.
Sony gets 30% of PSN sales and something like $5-$10 of boxed game sales. Microsoft already sells games on PlayStation and has games on PS+.
As a PS5 owner, I am also happy for Xbox owners. I look forward to playing their exclusive games on my PS5 later this year.
Fascinating way of breaking this to Xbox owners and Microsoft investors (“How will this affect the business?). Microsoft promises that Xbox exclusives won’t go 3rd party until a year after release but at the same time they point to Minecraft and other franchises that were already 3rd party. So CoD will stay cross platform at launch and PS5 players will have to wait until September to play Starfield.
How can Game Pass be the best deal on gaming when it is more expensive than PS+?
Joke’s on Outer Worlds Spacers Choice. I quit after the first planet in Outer Worlds.
Indeed, the publisher already has the cash from sales and the lower the player count, the lower the server costs.
Critics don’t suffer the same cognitive dissonance as users who spend $70 or more for games at launch.
Because a press release would just piss off Xbox owners. A podcast let’s Phil and his team explain how all this will be good for Xbox owners.
Halo is better than Gears but I imagine more of us have played through mote Halo than Gears.
Xbox Series X sales are in the WiiU range.
I would agree except 1) PCs are just so much expensive and 2) I play a lot of the games offered via PS+ Essential.
