Sony Demos Copying From Blu-ray Disc

Sony today demonstrated the next level of disc copying. At the company's booth at CES, Sony demonstrated how you could put a Blu-ray Disc movie into a Playstation 3 and copy the film to a Playstation Portable or a Memory Stick. "This way, you can have a portable copy you can take with you," explains David Bishop, president of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

I bet they embed a PSP Version of the movie onto the disc. that way it'll send the version over to the psp. I think ALL future titles should do that.

So as long as you got the sicks. You can rent movies rip em to stick and forever own a copy? You just would have to hook the slim up to the big screen. Probably would lose some quality in the process still if thats possible ... right on.

PSP output is the same if not better than a standard DVD. I know from personal experience.

Personally, I'm blown away. Sony must have 1,000 people who just sit around and figure out ways to add whatever they can into the PS3 and PSP. It's nuts.

It looks like the old PSPs can do this fine. Just not hook to a TV and watch that way. I've been looking for a good reason to start buying Blu-rays instead of DVDs. I think I just found it.

they wanted to do this for a long time after people stopped buy UMD movies, I remembered reading this at some point last year. So this is an amazing Idea. I was thinking about this this morning actually. I think they should set a standard for portables that have the ability to play movies, like the ipod and the PSP for instance, that way theres compatibilty. like BD player/PS3/PC - portable, now that portables have the ability to play mpeg-4, they should standardize this. this will also make people buy more BD movies.

Once you buy a movie you can do as you please, copy it to your PC, PSP whatever as long as you dont sell/make profit from your actions.

this is awesome! Great alternative to the UMD failure. Wow. Sony is like the Rocky of videogames. They just keep getting back up.

being that it would be for the psp screen size I am betting 480p at best. So that would amount to a full length movie in mpeg4 at 1.5gb or less. Nice alternative to UMD but it means you have to have a ps3 instead of just being able to dl it from the psn store. They need to get their video service running to really make this work for anyone with a psp and not require a ps3.

If that is the case then thats down to that company. Your not actually "ripping" the movie to your PSP, just that the Blu-Ray will come with the PSP version already on the disc.

This is a great idea but like so many other ideas of this nature, many pirates find a way around it and start flooding the market with boot-legs and thats where the DRM and Copyrights start causing headaches for us.

Leagally we (the consumer) can make as many copies as we want for our personal use, but we are not allowed by law to sell or distribute the copies in any way (this includes loaning the copy to a friend). In the end this is exactly what if gonna happen and we'll see the start of DRMs all over again.

It's a great idea though, diffently worth getting a PSP if you don't already have one.

I'm sure there's going to be a reasonable restriction, such as that copy only being compatible on the PSP it was ripped to, but at least they're not going with the "You can only make __ amount of copies route".

Getting high-quality PSP format movies off the internet or buying UMDs is just a pain; I'm glad that they're making our lives THAT much easier.

and it's completely rectifying the mistake they made with trying to sell UMDs as a movie format.

even before this, i used to copy my movies to my memory stick and watch them on the go, or on a plane.

if all future Blu Ray releases support this feature, that's *GREAT.

Sony never gets credit for being a technological innovator, as well as a software innovator (Echocrome, Little Big Planet, Eye Toy games), but it's the truth. they know their technology, and they are *ALWAYS thinking ahead, which is why they've remained in business for 60 *YEARS. they've made plenty of mistakes, but what company *DOESN'T, but they always manage to recover, and release more quality products.

Great but i doubt it. People could just result into renting ALL their movies as they can have a free copy on their PSP anyway.
