Which Console Won Christmas?

The Bitbag writes, "I made a prediction in an article back in October explaining my reasons why Playstation 3 will come in 3rd this holiday for sales. I stated 5 reasons to back my claims and now that Christmas is over, we can revisit the sales of December to see who came in first, second and third."

looking at US totals only is not seeing the big picture.

World wide hardware totals for December according to VG chartz, which is what this article is going by.

1. Wii - 2,176,529
2. 360 - 1,220,832
3. PS3 - 1,080,457

Wii F*cken dominated! And that was even with shortages, go to a store right now and you probably won't find one.

I can't believe that PS3 held it's own against XBOX 360 worldwide. If you would of told me that earlier in the year, I would of said you're f*cken nuts. 360 had Halo 3 and the greatest lineup of games ever according to most gaming media. It was also still cheaper than PS3.

Things weren't looking too good for PS3 for a while there. If you're a PS3 fan and you're realistic, you gotta be pretty satisfied. It should atleast have a chance to have a good 2008.

Don't want to sound too PS3 fanboy, but if these worldwide totals are close to the truth, then I don't know any other way to look at it. The numbers say it all, it's pretty close.

This article fails to see the worldwide sales. The PS3 and 360 are actually neck and neck. The 360 has a slight lead since october, but since mid December PS3 has more worldwide sales. These articles need to stop just showing U.S. data. Sorry to burst your bubbles xflop fans.

i knew it was going to end up like this.i don't like the wii but i knew that it was going to be first and the 360 second and the ps3 third.

With the PS3 still being $399 at its cheapest and still being so close in sells to the 360 even with less big games is amazing and the price didn't drop until November. 08 is going to be an interesting year. I think there could be another price drop before GTA IV comes out on the 360 and the PS3 but we will see.. It is more likely to happen around Christmas. The Wii dominated and I am glad that Nintendo has been successfull this time around.

PS3 didnt come in 3rd.... being the first full Christmas selling in Europe and everywhere else... only end of its first year... with "no games" and at 399$-499$ and it still didn't lose haha. Sorry to those of you who are living outside of the U.S. but the gaming market for me is here and it is the LARGEST market in the World and will dictate how a system will progress. If you loose the U.S. market, then regardless of your world plan you are in for trouble. Can you exist without the U.S. Market? Not as a competing power.

Sony had better fix their sales in the U.S. or they will surely loose this console war and have to rely on their other avenues of income to stay alive.

Sorry, those are the current facts and until the world sees fit to give the crown to someone else then the U.S. will have to take the burden of entertainment hub and drive the markets.

Spin is a funny thing... it always seems to come back around to you. Sony is getting caught up in their own spin and we will have to wait and see if they come out of it walking a straight line or twirling off into the crowd falling smack on their face.

You don't sell consoles to make money. You sell consoles to allow the software sales to make you money. If you don't have the software sells then you are just losing money on each console you sell and nothing more. (other then a tax write off)

If they can stay close to the 360(which comparing first year sales and worldwide sales which aren't bad by any stretch of the imagination)in the US then the PS3 will be fine because it will only pick up steam here and abroad. I live in the Dallas/Fort worth metroplex and everyplace I went to at Christmas that carry the consoles. (2 Best Buys and Walmart) Every 360 was sold out besides the Arcade edition, and there were still a TON of PS3s still on the shelves, both the 40g and the 80g. I personally saw Best Buy sell through a skid of 360s (50 or so Pro editions) and about 20 Elites in 3 days. (Wed.-Fri.) Is VG talking about shipped or sold? If they count shipped, then I think January could be a big month for the 360 too, because of the restocking.

Just to clarify. Seeing that I use the word loose a few times in my previous statement I should maybe clarify the use of it. I was not referring to coming in last in my first use of the word. I was referring to loosing (not keeping) the U.S. market. As in they are doing so poorly in the U.S. market that they are in danger of loosing it completely. And as mentioned before, this will surely cause a big dent in their capabilities of keeping their gaming system afloat.

Now the other part of loosing the console war. Yes, that is probably never going to happen. Only due to the fact that the console wars will be going on for ever. But Sony is in the proverbial quagmire in the U.S. with their system and they can't seem to stop the bleeding of their system due to their competition having a stronger front.

retired my 360 after gears of war... I think anyone in hear that owns both systems will honestly say the ps3 is a way better console than the 360... WAY WAY WAY WAY better hardware and Im going to say better games too.. 360 had bioshock this year.. Halo3 was a disapointment and mass effect was mass issues.. Heavenly sword, ratchet, uncharted, ut3, warhawk, and motorstorm beat the 360 line up in my eyes.

i got hitachi high def projector and its easy to see the difference in the quality of picture between the the 360 and ps3 .ps3 is much better but the games for the 360 are good so im not going to dismiss them just the hardware is junk. as far as winning this christmas i think every1 knew that this years fad is the wii so of course it was goin to win . itll be interesting now to see where 2008 will take this console war.happy new year gamers !!!

They dont need it. They spent all that time from the psone up to the ps2 breathing new life into gaming and giving us great games to play. Their new system gets off to a somewhat rocky start and suddenly everyone thinks it is over for them.Who cares if the 360 has more sales, doesnt mean the ps3 is going to die. This has been stated before, but I want to emphasize its importance to all. The point of selling a console is to sell software. Most current generation consoles are sold at a pretty substantial loss (xbox360 and PS3). This loss is made up by selling games (attach rate). Microsoft would gladly sell 1/3 the consoles if it had 3x the attach rate of the competition. Sony is absolutely getting killed on this front thus far. This will be the Wii's demise as well unless some great exclusives start popping up next year. If Sony does not improve its software sales considerably in 08 (thx to touted exclusives), then it will be so far behind in what matters that winning will be nearly impossible.

The type of consumer that neither Sony or MS want is one that buys the console and less than one game per year. Or, one that buys a PS3 and uses it only to watch Netflix rented movies.

We know from many developers the cost to develop on the PS3 is more that development of an equivalent Xbox 360 game. Your a CEO of a game company, looking at these number where do you place your bet if your looking at a couple of years to develop?

And before you say well the 360 has a headstart, these companies are "placing their bets" now for a release when both consoles have been out for at least a year, and have existing libraries of great games (the PS3 does have some great games, Uncharted, R&C, etc.). Which would you choose to make money?

WII: Nintendo needs to make Wiis faster! In it's 1st year Wii has managed to amass 1/6th the install base of PS2, but had Nintendo geared up production a few more notches it could have claimed 1/4 PS2's install base without breaking a sweat.

Factor in the obvious elementary school children all over the world who want the system,as well...and its no wonder that for every decent game on the system, there are 5-10 pieces of garbage for it released by every company on the earth with a Gamecube development kit. By the time is all said and done, I strongly believe the Wii's rapidly rising portfolio of filth, its library, will harm it...the irony being that it is a product of its own success. When Nintendo solidifies its stance with its core gamers who have stuck with it through all the ups and downs since '85, '91', '97, or '01 and rewards them with a regular supply of strong, reasonably mature, and quality titles, they will earn my respect. Until then lets see how long the casual mainstream audience keeps them afloat because in the casual and mainstream market, unlike the hardcore, things like the WII, or the Ipod, or Cabage Patch Kids are fads, and fads die. Rather quickly. At least, if the Wii does serve one purpose I'm happy about, is that it prevents all the truly crappy titles from appearing on the competition. It appears that all 3 consoles/companies will survive until the next generation wars in a few years. Wii is clearly ahead, and 360 in second.

The issue that the Sony fans fail to recognize is that they murdered the GC and XBox last go around, and they are no where close this time. Maybe things will change, but it appears unlikely that they will catch either.

The real issue is what personal stake any of us have over how the other console sells. If all three are viable then it appears that everyone benefits (except the corporations). There are far more important things for normal people to be concerned/worried/angry about than how many consoles MS or Nintendo sold over Christmas.

Its so obvious that the wii won in Christmas sales, but its amazing that the ps3's sales are increasing slowly but surely, and off course the 360 stays strong at 2nd.

In my opinion:

Wii : it's a console that is like toy, people (casual gamers) buy it like a toy for children, self. And it's always win even, after 5 years.

PS3: No super system sellers (sss) like Tekken, MGS, Gran Turismo, FF (exclusives) or multi eg. DMC. Score ? Almost a score of x360 or better/worse but almost the same. There are R&C, Uncharted, CoD but any of them isn't a SSS. My opinion : BD movies watcherz + lots of PS2 migrete to a PS3 before hits SSS's + HD TV's flue

x360: there are lots of games and SSS like Halo, Bioshock, Mass, Forza and Microsoft must sell more than a 2mln x360 but MS didn't (why ? ) I don't have a x360 but is confusing for anybody who like economic..

everyone knows the WII is the champion but some of those people that bought the WII have also bought a xbot or a ps3 . Whatever the WII does is not going to make or break what sony or micro is doing . ps2 selling well thats what they should write about
