Sony as a whole is in no way in trouble. If you hadn't noticed the total Sony console sales beat Microsoft's total sales by about 75 thousand.
Also, this was a huge month for Xbox 360 with the obvious release of Halo 3, plus many people forsaw the 40GB price cut and therefore didn't buy a PS3 in the last couple of weeks.

Xbox 360 consoles seem to really be taking off for the Holiday season. Outselling PS3 by over 4 to 1. This trend will only continue most likely with October, November and December seeing even more significant sales because of the Christmas shopping season.

It is not a good sign for Sony as NA sales for PS3 are even lower than last month.

Overall Microsoft couldn't have picked a better time to release Halo 3 and issue a price cut.

Worldwide sales will even be higher contributing to the gap bw PS3 and 360 install bases.

wow...Halo 3 had a very BIG and SIGNIFICANT impact on hardware sales...Anita Frazier from NPD (I got the info from GameDailyBIZ) said the #1 reason from consumers to buy consoles is for games that they want to play...Xbox 360 got game...indeed...she said expect strong sales of Halo 3 throughout the holidays...and all those new 360 owners will be looking for even more content to play...the Wii did it big too, despite supply constraints...my wallet is on one of those PS3 40 GB's so watch this space...things might get very interesting...we're in for a great ride...but best of all, many great games...

I think with these numbers for this month and probably the carry on effect into next the ps3 will have to sell a MASSIVE amount the next 2 months for them not to be in third place for number of units sold in 2007(actual year). 2007 has been a good year for ms lets hope it caries on through the christmas period. Great 360 sales, halo edition 360 may have contributed to this and people buying an extra 360 for system link etc(that's what my friend did for his b-day ^_^ I came in like 3rd each time :D)

PS3 hanging into the 100k lol. Price drops came in this month so sales will probably start to pick up a lot there. Price is hitting a lot of sweet spots for a lot of people right now. Here in Canada 80 GB just went down $160 to 499.99...so that's definitely going to catch some attention.

People at my work are big Sony fans, but are starting to sway to the XBOX this christmas due to the games that have come out and that are coming out. Games really due sell the systems for the big gamers.

Wii pretty much SUCKS, but people are lied into the system because of the funny WiiSports. They buy the system and there is nothing to play. Bummer, it catches dust, but still more people are buying it, hoping to get a great gaming system. End of the story? It ends up just like the Gamecube was. Having a great Mario, a great Zelda, a few other good games and a lot of rubbish (read: minigames).

the PS3 did not do nearly as well as the 360 did last October- if, of course, you are referring to NPD sales (I don't know about Europe).

In 2006, I believe the 360 sold around 250K consoles- which is basically 100K more than this year's PS 3 sales.

Of course, the 360 did not have any "real" competition at the time, although PS2 was putting up a rather good fight... Anyways, I just wanted to point out that in no way is the PS3's October sales similar to the 360's sales.

So PS3 is running half the 360 sales at the same point in their history.

The price cut for November should help bring 08 sales into 07 but without must-have games...

...the 360 wasn't competing with the PS3; it was competing with Kutaragi's overblown hype. So it had a tougher row to hoe than PS3.

Ps3, however, is competing against a real console with real flaws and real strengths whereas last year the 360 was competing against flawless vaporware. That is why 360 sales *jumped* through the roof last december once the market finally got a good look at the competition; the fence-sitters jumped in.

Expect a similar result this december.

If PS3 sales continue, it *will* surpass the 360's first year sales...
...in *two* years.
Do look at the month by month numbers above; PS3 in 10 months has sold what 360 sold in 3 (4 Million) and half what 360 sold in a year (8 million).
360 is currently at 13-14 million so they have built up a full year's worth of sales lead (in 10 months) and the margin is increasing every month.
If MS sold nothing for a year solid and PS3 doubled their current sales, they'd still need a year and a half to catch up.

Simply put, the PS3 is underperforming the 360 sales rate of 05-06, not just the current 360 sales. That is why Sony cut prices for the second time in 3 months and reduced features for the second time in 6 months; they need to spur sales and without games they *have* to cut prices.

But don't worry, I'm sure bundling in the Spider-Man 3 movie will increase sales significantly.
At least 20-30%.

This was always inevitable, even the Sony Fanboys knew it was coming. They denied it, but what do you expect? If I dropped (which I did not) $600 on a console/blu ray player with no games, I would not want anyone else to have fun either.

There may not be a 2008 for Sony. The next bomb will be GTA. All the kids who are thinking about buying 360's to play Halo3 with their friends, will have more incentive with that game coming down pike.

Although you have to admit, if Sony keeps up the fire sale on the PS3, it might be worth buying as a Blu Ray player when it hits $300.

It's about games! The 360's been out longer so those 05 & 06 games are in gamestop now lowered to take advantage of that. You can have a used 360 game for less than $20.00. Can find that kind of deal on the Wii? (Outside of old gamecube games.) Can you find that kind of deal on the PS3? I find it shocking that Heavenly Sword has been out for 4 weeks during the month of September and managed 139K. Are you kidding me. What happen to the "Wait Till's". Take a look back in February - July and that's all you saw on this site. To me it's official, People are buying PS3's for the Blu-Ray movies, not GAMES. And please, show me some data that proves me wrong instead of clicking on the disagree link. Or some random but the 40GB SKU is coming post. Show me one Sony exclusive that's stayed in the 10 top in VGChartz for at least one month, or during the last 10 consecutive months one PS3 game (including multi on PS3) making the top 10 software sales list for NPD reporting the last 10 consecutive months.

Halo 3 was going to move about 400k or 500k i think. Depending on how you view it. I guess it was right that most people that bought Halo 3 already have a x360 since 500k units sold for Sept is about 16% of the 3.3 million Halo 3 games that was sold.This just confirms my belief that x360 crowd are heavily into hardcore FPS and other similar games such as Gears of War and bioshock.
With the vastly varied game lineup that PS3 have this holiday season couple with the price drop. It will be really intresting to see how the market reacts to the PS3.

That's actually fewer copies of Halo sold than I expected though (a few people have been touting that it was 5 million sold, so I guess that's why). Hopefully Mass Effect ends up doing the same for them.

The PS3 and Wii sales are right on par though, since Sept. was Halo Month. It's November and December that I'll probably pay attention to though for all three consoles.

Wii did a hell of a good job. NIN popularity is back. I am glad to see that. X360 went from 170k in july to 276k in august to 528k in Sept. Nice jump due to great sales of Madden to Bioshock to Halo3. Now on PS3 159k in July to 131k in august to 119k in Sept. Even after it's first price drop in July still can't crack the 200k. They really need that 40gb for 400$. Overall sept was the best selling September in the last 6 years. Back in 01 was when the PS2 was at the HELM, was the best Sept of all with 870k total XB,PS2,GC. With todays #'s they blew that # with over 1.148Mil total 360,PS3,Wii. Great to see that. Although now in 07 the roles have reversed.

but the truth is that this is the peak of the 360 at least for the next year or so and the PS3 hasnt started to get its system seller games yet so Microsoft keeps jabbing and jabbing at sony's face, i just hope that sony comes back swinging hard with Uncharted, Haze, Ratchet, KZ2, MGS4, FFXIII etc etc...2008 will be a crucial year for Sony's PS3 and we'll finally see if Microsoft will give Sony the knockout punch or if Microsoft already threw his best punches and its too tired to finish Sony...

If you look at the vgcharts and compare them to the npd you can see that they were real close to the 360 but actualy overtracked the ps3 numbers. The reason I point this out is because theres a couple of people on here who keep saying how vgcharts always over track the 360 and under track the ps3 well this will be the 3month in a row where that just isnt true. I know vgcharts did over track the 360 2 months in a row at the start off the year but since then they have been pritty close. Anyway just wanted to point that out.

Halo 3 sold 3.3 million units.

Last month, the Xbox 360 sold 276.7K units; this month, it sold 527.8K units. That's an increase of 251.1K units.

3.3 million units of the most hyped game ever only pushed 251.1K 360s more out the door than last month. That means about 92% of all the people who bought Halo already had a 360.

That is barely a system-mover. That is a tiny spike. Now that the initial sales blitz has worn off and Halo sales slow down, I highly doubt the 360 will see a month even CLOSE to this one. It would appear that most Halo fans already had a 360 to begin with. It wasn't truly convincing those who didn't own one already.

Even the staunch Sony fans have to admit: Those are some crazy sales figures. The 500K for the Consoles was nice but $3.3 million in one month DAMN!!! I don't like the 360 that much(not really big on FPS's on MMORPG's) but please people give credit where credit is due. Don't throw salt because MS capitalized on their biggest asset for the system(which I have played recently and isn't nearly as bad as some people have told me).

They may have a point, too; if you look at the evolution of the PS3 line, they *take out* gaming features every time they reduce the price:
- first they took out the emotion engine
- then the graphics chip and card reader
To go to $299 or $199, what gaming features could they possibly remove? The bundled controllers? Bluetooth? WiFi? HDMI? PS3 compatibility?
All they would have left would be a Plasystation-branded Blu-Ray player at that point. And I'm sure Panasonic and Samsung would be "thrilled" at that.

$299 is not a way Sony can go any time soon, I don't think.

I don't get it. I own a Wii, and I am about to Ebay it. I want to like it, but its starting to collect dust. It's just a glorified Gamecube. The games are Meh. The system is Meh. But it sells like hotcakes.

I have just heard this same song from sony loyalist time and time again. Always naming games that will supposively boost sales for the Ps3. First it was Motorstorm...then Lair, then Warhawk, then Heavonly Sword. None of those games coupled with a 100 dollar price cut....didn't boost ps3 sales to at least match the xbox 360's.....I mean to make it worse....the xbox 360 is outselling the ps3 almost 5 to 1. Thats insane when we are talking about the largest market for video games in the WORLD. And then you look at software/game sales and its even worse for Sony. Xbox 360 games are selling more than Wii games, Ps3 games, and Ps2 games combined. Think about that for a minute. Thats insane....The Wii has been selling like hot cakes since launch....yet the xbox 360 is selling more games than Sony and Nintendo combined times 3. LOL
