Microsoft: Xbox 360 with Built In HD-DVD Drive On The Way?

In some exciting news for HD-DVD fans, Scott Browning, one of the most experienced CE retail marketing executives in Australia, has revealed that Microsoft is preparing to launch a new Xbox 360 console featuring a built in HD-DVD drive.

"The fact that movie houses like Paramount are behind the HD-DVD format along with the like of DreamWorks is key. I believe that more content providers will get behind the format and that the likes of Microsoft who are big supporters of the HD DVD format will bring out an Xbox with a built in HD DVD player. This is a given."

I still think that micrsoft compresion technology is strong enough for current time but if more MMO and games like borderlands gerne may make microsft to go for this move after 2-3 years, then this could be good. Also, I can certainly tell that current 360 users will not have to worry since the price of HDDVD drive when such a situation arrives will be near abt 100$ or even lesser, since situation like that will never happen before 2-3 years (if its gonna happen). But it will be whole lot better for a 360 user to buy whole PS3 of 500$. So even if some one buys any 360 today he could be assure of that quality of games will not degrade and also one could modify his or her 360 with very little amount of money later on.

It's very common for Electronic equipment to get updates on a yearly basis. An example of this would be TV's or PC's. The Likely hood is that Microsoft would just exchange the regular DVD drive for an HD DVD Drive. Its unlikely that Publishers would start putting their games on HD DVDs. That would divide the market and confuse consumers. It would be no different then Microsoft adding the HDMI port.

If any format could cross this barrier it would be HD-DVD, let me tell you why. HD-DVD is DUAL FORMAT!! DVD-9 on one side and HD-DVD on the other making it playable through either SKU#. Also, this is the perfect time to replace the Elite Price tag with this new HD-DVD SKU# keeping it afford ably in the $400 range even keel with the 40G PS3 only a 10x better value. HD-DVD theirs no stopping you now!

- No problem as is most games in production of the next year or 2 will be fine on the DVD9s with no worry of content loss.

- Anyone ever hear of collectors or limited edition 2 disc sets well this is where they make their 1st move in consolidating content.

- costs are going down all over the board and if Blu-ray developers can still turn a profit with a serious lack of content to justify it's space than HD-DVD can be supplied and used the same.

- As for the 11 mil, well the games will be the same for quite a while DVD-9 will hold most games releasing over the next couple of years and if their is expanded content only an HD-DVD can hold than that can be dealt with in time different ways. Either way those that adopted the 360 early like I did have been playing great games, and will continue to. I am realistic in understanding the year lead was very important for software development time. The ends justifies the means! I my self will switch when it is necessary as I have a HD-DVD add on and prefer not to use my 360's drive to play movies. In other words when they start making games that need that much space then I'll consider an updated 360.

Sony launched bluray with the ps3 which in turn caused the ps3 to be priced very high, so high in fact that it was out of most people's price range. Now that prices have come down, Microsoft could start including HD DVD playback in 360s themselves and still have them at a good price, I'm thinking the first model will be $399 and that will have a 20 gig hard drive. Games will still be DVD based, but this would be one hell of a way to boost 360 sales as well as the prospect of HD DVD winning this format war because for two years the 360 has been $399 and selling well, so launch another unit with HD DVD included for that same price point and the public will go wild, and Sony will go bust.

Actually Microsoft has NOT made a profit on the Xbox 360 yet. They are promising to turn the corner this year (with the release of Halo 3) and to continue making a profit hereafter.

However, a profit has not quite materialized yet, but time is not up yet either. If they don't turn a profit soon though, the shareholders are going to start threatening to pull the plug on the Xbox.

Were they comparing the HD-DvD against a regular DvD when they said the HD-DvD was better? I don't remember reading any articles on how HD-DvD was better than Blu-Ray besides the price; although I did see a HD-DvD commericial saying it was the better format, but that doesn't count since the guy was paid to say it. Anyways can you tell me the difference between HD-DvD and Blu-Ray? There really isn't much of a difference besides the fact that the Blu-Ray disc is bigger allowing more sound storage and video storage, so what does this tell you? The point is to imbed a drive so that consumer does not need to purchase an external one to see HD-DVD movies AND to increase the actual amount of HD-DVD players out there. Plus, I do believe (as Microsoft has proved so far), that it will be a SKU by itself, so you can choose to buy it or not. Completely up to you. And I believe it would be much cheaper than Elite + HD-DVD add-on because Microsoft over-charges for its external accessories by a lot.
Losing format? Come on! For such a lot of bubbles, you should know this! HD-DVD isn't loosing. Blu-ray isn't loosing. Both formats battle on and will probably for a very long time. I don't believe either will lose at this point. Yes, HD-DVD is the "underdog" at the moment, but did you forget that Blu-ray was the underdog before the PS3? I believe Blu-Ray will win the format wars. I was unconvinced 8 months ago but I am pretty confident that it will become the popular format. The issue against here is that, if Microsoft wants to incorporate this drive into their console, they cannot release it at a new high price. As you said, it would need to be similarly priced to one of their high end SKU's at the moment e.g. Elite.

But if they do this, would it not increase manufacturing costs and slow down their rate of profit? What interests does Microsoft have in the format wars? Although they are supporting HD-DVD, it is only an Add-On. The reason for this was not only to keep the costs down for them and the consumer, but because if Blu Ray had won they'd be selling a console with a failed format under its belly. It would have made no sense so they chose the safe option to just offer an add on.

Now you think they have a gain in the format war and want to actively support HD-DVD into their consoles? It's not that I disagree with the idea I just think it is too soon for that to happen. Way too early.

I am pretty convinced that neither Blu-ray nor HD-DVD will win seeing as it swings around all the time. Blu-ray is still very expensive to produce, many studios are releasing on HD-DVD (including big studios that are exclusive to Blu-ray!) and it's still the leading format in Europe. I've seen things go to HD-DVD's favour and some for Blu-ray's favour. And if Blu-ray got this far simply by selling more players, wouldn't the same hold true for HD-DVD? Even if Blu-ray has superior studio support, before the PS3, HD-DVD was clearly winning, even with inferior support. All in all, I am pretty convinced this will end up like DVD+R and DVD-R. It's still far too early to decide a winning factor, however, because HD is still in its infancy.

But the thing here is, it will probably be cheaper than Elite + HD-DVD add-on, which makes it the popular choice for all those who wants the drive and a 360 without the external add-on. Microsoft can even cut the price if they want since they have such a huge amount of money.
Seeing how poorly they've actually made the 360 (hardware realibility for example), it seems to me that Microsoft is after more market share rather than profit.

If Microsoft didn't have any interest in the format wars, then why would they back HD-DVD and why would HD-DVD use its porprietary iHD? It seems to me that Microsoft wants HD-DVD to win and by integrating an HD-DVD into the console, that seems like a smart move. They might even phase out a model at a later date if the new SKU is popular enough.
Remember that Microsoft made HD-DVD an add-on because of their "everything should be optional" policy. That's why there's so many SKUs and so many accessories. Sony is having lots of SKUs to cut down on costs and increase popularity of the console, so they're a lot different than Microsoft.
Also remember that Microsoft tends to use the brute force method. Try it if it works and if it, no big deal. They even have their own compression codec. They have the money, so why not?
Now is the right time to integrate an HD-DVD drive into the console to drive Blu-ray back and take back market share. Microsoft is greedy.

IMHO, the strength for the 360 so far has been it's lower price point; this has been a knee in the groin for Sony and has forced them to make massive pricecuts. If the Xbox 360 was to have a HD-DVD drive as standard , the price would rise significantly. Besides, as many has already mentioned, no devs would be allowed to develop on the HD-DVD medium.

I say the best solution is the one already at hand, let the consumer choose whether or not they want HD-DVD compatibility on their Xbox 360.

Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are losing formats when compared to DVD sales. There are more HD-DVD stand alone players sold, but more blu-Ray players if you count PS3 sales. The interesting thing is actual disc sales which don't show a clear "winner". Unless one of the formats quits, this will be a long drawn out battle with consumers being the biggest losers.

I think it will be a good move from MS. The options they have is:

1) Release games on HD-DVD for the large content games.
2) Release the multi DVD disks as well. One of the DVD's can be the dual - flip side HD-DVD. That way they will still cater for those with HD-DVD and those with older models.

This way they can try to support HD-DVD - and try to undermine the BR steamroller. Nothing else will stop the BR but a XB360 with build in HD-DVD. And that is a fact.

With quite some momentum - XB360 did not loose much steam with the PS3 price drop, and the Wii did not maintain the momentum with which it caught up. Wii will still be the best seller for a year or so - but not like the PS2 scenario.

With a 65nm more stable XB360 with HD-DVD, MS could actually try to see out this generation - otherwise they will have to release the XB720 early. We are early into this gen. With the PS2 having sold 120 million, we are not even 10% into this gen console hardware sales yet. So - with 10% of potential units into this gen, some momentum - 65nm solving the RROD, this will make sense. Otherwise it will get murdered by the PS3 on the high end next year, and cannibalized by the Wii on the lower end.

They must just do something about the DVD drive quality and not mess up with the HD-DVD drive like they did with earlier XB360 models.

It will still not get me to buy a XB360 - but I would understand their strategy 100%

Xbots - this is actually good news in the long term. Drop the DVD-with-compression-will-hand le-all-size-content act. Not even MS believes it.

They could not bundle it earlier - because they had to release early or get murdered by the competition. HD-DVD was not ready. And I would not fret the add-on HD-DVD thing. A firmware update should make it usable for games. They could even have an internal HD-DVD upgrade option made available. Since so many machines get send in for RROD, they would expect most machines to come by the service center at least once in the 3 year warranty period - so the option should make use of it.

… it would be a smart business move by MS. Microsoft themselves have very little invested in the HD format wars, despite supporting HD DVD. But Sony on the other hand has an enormous investment in making Blu-ray win this format war outright.

The PS3 was late to release this gen, partly because Sony had to wait for the Blu-ray format to be finalised. And when they did release, it was at a price point that defied belief for a mass market games console. Sony took a calculated risk that the loss they would certainly take by coming to market with a $600 games console, would be offset by the steady income gained from licensing Blu-ray technology, when that format won the HD war. THIS is something they should have down right from the start. You dont want until your system is almost past the two year mark to do something like this. This is bad news because the install base is already set for microsoft.

Microsoft will never add a standard hd-dvd drive to the Xbox360. The only way you will see an xbox with a built hd player is when they announce the next xbox system. It will never be on a 360. So just drop it, wasting time on rumors only makes everyone look like idiots.

It's speculation with no basis in fact. I stopped playing the waiting game for rumored updates and bought an HDMI Zephyr at $350 with the idea in mind that it would probably be bricked within 3 years. It's sad, but apparently considered acceptable judging by the level of forgiveness Microsoft's customers have been willing to give. The irony being the Falcon is now in production even if the supposed reliability is yet unproven.

But hypothetically, if it were real, I would have been in the market for an HD-DVD drive equipped XBox. I would have paid $500, possibly more depending upon packaging (include internal WiFi).

When the Elite was announced, I (like some others) thought it could/would be equipped with an HD-DVD drive, justifying the HDMI port. Instead, the Elite simply addressed the inadequacy of the 13GB of free space on the 360. And the $180 premium bought 100GB of space and upscaled DVD playback via HDMI. And a cable. Never has so much fuss been made over a $10-20 cable. Especially considering how users are willing to buy a $20 plastic faceplate or vinyl graphics or any of the other add ons that are as disposable as iPod cases.

Microsoft's reasoning behind not equipping them as such was reasonable, although that option would have been ideal for me and others. But HD-DVD was/is unproven as a format; it's longevity is not yet secure. Also, it is not feasible to develop major titles with the idea in mind of distributing them on HD-DVD, for all said reasons.

It may as well be an entirely new system.

Which brings us to the Xbox720, or whatever the next box will be called. And the issue of the longevity of the Xbox360. It's not a matter of if, but when. The RROD free repair warranty is for the next 3 years on current (the faulty design) systems. Around November 2010. Assuming the current production Falcon systems have finally addressed this design/manufacturing fault, the extended warranty need only concern the first 11 million units (through Zephyr). The original Xbox had a 4 year lifespan before all development and production came to an abrupt halt once the 360 arrived. 360 was released in November 2005.

November 2009 is a reasonable estimate for a new Xbox. No later than November 2010. By then HD-DVD should have proven its longevity and have a user base large enough for broad consumer awareness of the format. The F.C.C. is mandating all broadcasts be in HD in 2009 (no more SD programming). And a much more sizable percentage of homes will have HD displays which continues to grow as entry prices drop as they have been.

Whether some are willing to accept it, games continue to require more resources, and eventually 9GB, will become a limitation. Yes, you can distribute on multiple discs, but this was also the case when software was distributed on CD. Which transitioned to DVD. Memories run short for some. "I don't want HD" media say some. Or more accurately, I don't want to pay extra for it. Well, they will buy it in the future whether they like it or not. Or be stuck playing the last generation of hardware which will have minimal support.

Future solution for the Microsoft/XBox? Develop and distribute via HD media (HD-DVD drive standard). New system will use an updated CPU and GPU in keeping with current developments. Include additional RAM on top of the 256-512MB video RAM. Components will be cheaper in 2009 as well, so 1-2GB main RAM is not unreasonable. Microsoft wants to keep the media hub concept, include at least a 500GB HDD which will be $100 or less by 2009. Include WiFi N for high speed wireless networking. Looking at $400-500 initial MSRP.

So the issue of the 360 is moot. Microsoft has a well established history of planned obsolescence in its products and is concerned with securing market share above all. Certainly above thorough R&D and providing reliable products because patches can be made based upon consumer complaints/needs/wants. This is the 360. Released too early and CQ suffered as a result. All to secure the highest next gen market share. 33% failure rate on the initial 10-11 million units is unprecedented. Has there ever been a piece of consumer electronics that sold so many units with such a high failure rate? None come to mind.

Rather than keep fixing a faulty hardware design and cycling faulty units (3 million + units), release a newer, better piece of hardware. With a new name. And throw in BC so as not to alienate 360 owners. Convince 360 owners to upgrade for the newest and best content and this is Microsoft's solution. 360 R&D comes to an abrupt halt.

Then the only way for MS could make it work for future games they would have to sell two disc formats DVD 9 and HD DVD. It would be like when you buy a PC game, you have a choice between 1-2 DVDs or 3-5 CDs. Both PS3 and 360 should have launched this holiday season with 1 or 2 GB of RAM and 200 GB of HDD with the same price points. If MS did incorporate the HD-DVD drive for games... It wouldn't be a dramatic jump where they say..."Okay! All games on HD-DVD disc!" It would be more of a as needed basis. Most games still don't fill up a full dvd, so those types of games won't make the jump. If a game like Crysis came to the 360, then it would need the space. So it would be a situation like having a ps2 and still buying ps1 games kinda!

Most 360 fans wouldn't mind buying a new 360 with something better added into it, because alot of them bought a ps2 multiple times(without anything new) because the "Disc read error" problem was as bad as the "Red ring of death". It's just that at that time people didn't know if enough people complained(like they did with MS) you could get something done about it.

It doesn't matter in the end though, as long as we play good games on whatever system(all if you can afford it).

That not so bad since i like to watch HD movies on my HD t.v.

But its like when i bought my 360 and i was forced to pay for the internet twice.

Then the cable its came with wasnt long enough so i was forced to buy a longer one because of no wifi which u can find in hand held systems.

Then im forced to worry about my 360 every time i play it just because M$ wanted to start the brainwashing early and release a unfinished system.

Then when i wanted to change my name i was forced to pay $10 just to do that.

I was forced to buy a fan so preserve the life of my 360 because there product sucks.

Im forced to sit and watch all the new SKU's with better heatsink, 65nm, falcon etc.. etc.. while im stuck with this POS prayin it doesnt crap out when i turn it on.

Now if i wanna charge my controller well do i pay for bat. or do i pay for a charger?? which path of forcing do i choose this time ????

I dont mind microsoft adding a internal HD-DVD drive for the same price (350.00). It would be cool to me. I already payed my $400 when the 360 launched and I feel like I got my moneys worth at the time (good games) The PS3 droped its price in less then a year, If i got a PS3 at launched, i would be pissed right now. LOL In the end who cares.It will be great for the future 360 owners who refuse to buy one now. gosh.. (also i doubt they would add a HD-DVD drive, this some fake rumor) lol

Little do you know that PS3 already stole the spotlight with there now and goal to sell the 40GB version..

And selling that is at a low $400 price tag..

no addons no catch.. so you early adopters of the 360 looks like your going to have to buy yourselfs a whole new system if this happens about the Built-in HD-Drive. :P
