Re: Knocking Down Trees

PS54 responds to Gamasutra's article "Knocking Down Trees" by defending shooters who don't have destructible environments, arguing that in many ways, destructible environments is detrimental to the overall design and enjoyment.

Call of duty levels are designed for close combat and "Rambo" style of run and gun game play. the style is actually the "twitch" type of gaming like Quake and Unreal back in the day where the fastest trigger wins.

Bad Company 2 levels are designed for teamwork, vehicles, and holding down certain areas of the map. The destruction adds to the realism of the game. Would be kinda dumb to have a tank that couldn't blow up a building. teamwork and tactics win out in this type of game play.

Battlefield 2 levels are designed for the semi realistic feel of Battle using multiple aircraft, vehicles, ships, attack strategy, moving from point to point, and securing the battlefield as a whole. All most like playing a real time strategy game as so many pieces need to come together for victory.

I just don't think the writer understands that every FPS has a different style of game play and actually they all do it well for the games mentioned here.

DelbertGrady4893d ago

Overall though, BFBC 2 was deeply underrated compared to the attention BLOPS is getting. Imo it's a much better FPS on all fronts.

Agent-864892d ago

And the excellent Vietnam expansion sealed the deal.

mrv3214892d ago

I'm quite glad Bad Company 2 is under rated because then true gamers who can see past the Activision money scam end up playing these games as apposed to the Call of Duty fan who only buys Madden/COD each year and the closest he's ever gotten to team work was labour and ironically his only correct use of various sexual terms. Unfortunatly that same person hasn't really developed mental enough to even comprehend the idea of changing classes to combat whats on the field. That's right snipers, if you see 2 tanks shooting our base maybe it's worth consider a class change to engineer... and stop moaning to your squad

'SOMEONE TAKE OUT THE TANK I'N GOING TO RESPAWN SOON AND I DON'T WANT TO BE KILLED BY THE TANK NOOB'

While there are stupid players on BC2 note the snipers etc atleast they aren't near as common. In black ops even the humble cold would seem like a rarity next to the number of teamworkaphobes.

Why do people use BLOPS instead of BO?

soundslike4892d ago (Edited 4892d ago )

"Clearly destroying a house people are hiding in, so they can no longer hide in it is not strategic and is a complete gimmick.

CLEARLY.

Clearly if they were to remove everything that characterized the gameplay it could one day be more like CS.

...and that's why BLOPS is awesome."

wait what???

outwar60104892d ago

Whats wrong about asking for more from devs for your £40 investment. Whatever is possible i want!!! i dont want games to get generic because of devs laziness its there job to push boundaries!

jdktech20104892d ago

lol at the comments and lol at BC2 not being a strategic shooter....While I agree some games don't need destructible cover, BF is anything but a lazy game or poor shooter.....it's a fantastic game and I can't wait for BF3

Honestly, I saw a lot of COD fanboy talk in that article

WiIIiam4892d ago

Both articles were ridiculous. Call of Duty and Battlefield couldn't be more different if they tried, so there is no reason to dictate that they must play by the exact same rules. Still, light environmental damage from explosives would be a nice addition to CoD just to keep things interesting and encourage players to use different weapons and strategies.

gcolley4892d ago

destructible environments are an evolution. BF didn't have them once and is much better now it does. CoD needs to implement it to a certain degree, even if it is on the level of bad company 1 which i actually prefer over number 2. when the latest CoD still plays like the first one i think it is time for a change. destruction in games is not all or none. there can be a degree of destruction and this would make CoD playable again, you don't have to level building but make it a little bit realistic.

blowing shit up = FUN

Ducky4892d ago (Edited 4892d ago )

Well, I originally hated CS (and still do) because bullets travel through weak material.
I always liked the old mechanic where it's either a clean direct shot, or nothing. There was a very small little for error when making your shots through narrow openings... whereas nowadays it's just autospray and your bullets will cut through the material and hit your target.
TF2 still retains the classic system though.

It would be cool if CoD had more destructible props in the environment, such as the watermelons on Crossfire in MW. Make things more dynamic than static mannequins.
... but I'd prefer if it didn't go beyond MoH's level of destruction (i.e. almost negligible)

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2's Scope Was Impacted by Xbox Series S Limitations

Wccf tech writes: "Kingdom Come Deliverance 2's scope was impacted by the Xbox Series S hardware limitations, as developers could only make a game that was 25% bigger than its predecessor."

This is the issue with things like this

Xbox Series X is apparently to MS the worlds most powerful console

However the Series S is obviously a limitation because it’s underpowered and developers have to go for parity.

So what’s the point of the world’s most powerful console if you are holding third party developers back? They aren’t going to push themselves if they have to think about the weakest console.

The issue wouldn’t be as bad if it was just Xbox but you are also affecting the PS version aswell

I think developers need to start just taking advantage of a console and if one of them can’t do X Y and Z then f*** them…why should the others suffer. What’s MS going to do? The bigger the franchise the least chance MS are going to tell them to f*** off. Baulders Gate 3 seemed to have stood their ground and suddenly their “strict” parity rule didn’t really matter. We suddenly got super optimisation efforts for the Series S that got things sorted.

anast8h ago

I agree, and the sad part is use normal folk saw it the second they announced their plans.

Abear214h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Agree 100% this is why I didn’t want the M$ Monopoly, now PS5 version will be held back too.

If PS5 Pro comes out and Series S is still a thing it’ll be interesting what differences and what devs choose to do. Really hoping Rockstar pushes the PS5 pro with GTA6 and we get the best version possible.

outsider16242h ago

Good ole S indeed. Everyone knew this all along. S was holding games back...Now where the hell is Orchard i want a word with him.

More info from the author of the article, I think: https://www.reddit.com/r/ki...

Quote:
"1) I was told this info from the producer of the game Martin Klíma.
2) He specifically said the game will have only one mode.
3) And this mode is 4K 30 on PS5/XSX and 1440p 30 on XSS.
4) He said that the game is already running north of the 30 FPS cap so the performance should be stable on launch, much better than KCD1.
5) The limitation was XSS because of the 10GB memory. He said that's why they wanted to make the game 25% larger.
6) Speculation on my part: the output resolution is probably upscaled and the reason why there won't be a 60 FPS mode is because it'll most likely be very CPU heavy, like Dragon's Dogma 2 for example."

Doesn't seem like they're adding a 40fps mode on PS5/Series X for launch even if they can handle it.

Sgt_Slaughter8h ago

I'd much rather have 1440p/60fps or even 45fps. Having just one, even with the Series S in mind, is disappointing.

franwex6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Remember when xbots were adamant that the series s won’t hold back the gen?

Microsoft just needs to let go of the mandatory parity. Who cares if your grandma doesn’t understand that a game cannot be played on the S. It’s not like it she can buy you a physical game for it anyway. Before buying the game put up a notice that it only works on series X. If you’re buying for a friend-allow for a refund.

Bam. Everyone is happy. Most series s owners are for casuals that want Game Pass anyway and most likely don’t purchase most games.

If the developers want it to run on S, let them figure it out.

Chocoburger45m ago

If it were Series X only then they'd only be selling to 25% of the Xbox Series userbase, and that's certainly not worth the time and effort into doing a port. Could just do PS5 & PC instead. No compromises needed.

Jin_Sakai6h ago

“During the event, the Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 producer also revealed that on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game will run at 4K resolution and 30 frames per second“

Another “creative decision” right? 🤦‍♂️

IHateNate6h ago

Amateur hour. Very incapable developer.

Outside_ofthe_Box5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Since you're not an amateur and clearly know more than them, can you over there and help get the game running on the S without having to sacrifice their true vision. Us gamers would really appreciate you using your wisdom for good 🙏

IHateNate5h ago

Thousands of games run just fine on S.

But Kingdom Come is the game that can’t. Must be one hell of a game!

franwex4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Thousands of games run on PS4 and on Switch. If developers want them to run on those systems. Fine. Those two platforms still get new games. Sony isn’t making studios also make a ps4 pro version, or Nintendo a wiiu version. Microsoft technically is.

IHateNate2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

If games like Alan Wake 2, GTA6, COD, hellblade all run on S, no excuse for this 100x smaller and 100x worse looking game to be held back.

outsider16242h ago(Edited 2h ago)

"Thousands of games run just fine on S.

Kingdom come 2 runs just fine alright. Its the SCOPE that they want. They had to cut it because of the stupid S series. Hellblade2 ran just fine too..but im pretty confident if it was just the X in mind, the scope of the game would have been much bigger.

IHateNate1h ago

So their scope is greater than that of GTA6 and warzone? Wow. Crazy
