Microsoft Happy With GTA IV Delay? No Money Paid To Rockstar?

The poster claims MS rep told him "They never paid money to Rockstar" and that "Microsoft is totally happy about GTA IV being delayed".

"Word on the street was that Microsoft paid through the nose for GTA IV exclusive episodic content - to the tune of 50 million bucks. What an investment! The game has now been delayed (due to rumored PS3 programming probs) and won't make this Christmas. So you'd think that Microsoft would be pissed. Not so! I thought Take Two confirmed that they got money from MS in a confrence or something but who knows? But I do believe that its not too bad for MS since now their Halo 3 is more free and has one less big opponent and then next year MS can enjoy more success with GTA4, again in a less crowded season.
And if the game is indeed better by then and more polished, then not only Sony & MS but we all could benefit from the delay.

You need this now more than ever, obviously it would have to be finished, but without it, you don't have a big one-up due to the cheaper console price. That will no longer be an issue by the time GTA comes out and is surrounded by GT5 (biggest first party console game, twice as big as Halo series), MGS4, FFXIII (2 biggest 3rd party exclusives around) all coming to PS3 next year. PS3 at 300-400 and those games? Win.

This year DJ is right, only Sony has about 4-5 times as many, not 3, big exclusives which will push the console - coming from various genres - the only way to win.

I agree about the delay...the Pachter rumored PS3 issue is so completely biased its ridiculous...BOTH versions where very far from complete...we keep "seeing" the 360 version in the 2 trailers...and every eyes on of anything but the trailers has shown nothing but an extremely poor framerate...on the 360...

People say "not playable" on the PS3...ok...but I would consider the just as rumored 2 fps on the 360 just as bad...Rockstar delayed the game because it was not even close to finished...and they have said before that both platforms being so totally different is what was holding things up...the PS3 being tough to code for, and the 360's DVD and lack of standard HDD where both hurdles as far as Rockstar announced...its not just the PS3...

After hyping it at E3 MS look quite silly now. At least they got the price cut to help sales.

I'm sure Rockstar delayed it to give Sony a version that is built on the PS3 engine rather than another 360 port like EA Sports' Madden 08. Or I could be wrong and the real reason for the delay is that they couldn't fit it on a single DVD9 and now must redo everything so that it could work with the 360's HDD rather than concern themselves over the disc storage issue.

The PS2 installed base is huge; however Sony needs its PS2 base to shift over to PS3. The continued sucess of PS2 canibalizes resouces that should be directed to pushing the PS3 forward. Sony needs the installed base to shift to the PS3!!!

M$ has strategically moved to capture the Madden fans with the price drop and the better frame rate. This strategy will definitely move systems.

Ultimately the delay GTA hurts Sony more b/c of the lack of games this year. However there is no denying that M$ would probably have sold more systems with GTA this holiday especially if Sony version was delayed and the 360 was the only place to play GTA

Chances are that GTA4 would have sold a lot more copies Christmas '07 than in early '08.

Honestly, I am having a hard time keeping myself convinced that I was right in purchasing a PS3. I have Resistance and Motorstorm. Whoopee. Don't get me wrong, they are both great games, but that is about it. Every other game I play is on the 360.

The average consumer equates Playstation to GTA. So with the ONE game that would have moved SYSTEMS for Sony now moved to next year, this holiday season is going to suck for the PS3. There ARE good games coming out for the PS3 this year. I do not deny that, are they system sellers? I don't think so, and the average consumer is not aware that they even exist. At least the 360 has Halo 3 to pull it through the holidays. Not to mention Bioshock or Mass Effect even if they are overshadowed by the Halo hype.

I am not sure how anybody can see the GTA delay as helping Sony in any positive way. MS is not going to be hurt by this and MS SHOULD be glad that isn't coming out soon... because that means they are going to leave Sony with its pants around its ankles and the bad press that the PS3 is the reason for the delay.

No one is happy about the GTA delay, except Nintendo, but they're happy either way.

Sony is hurt because this was the game that could move their console. Now, its not going to move as well for a Christmas gift, because their lineup for the rest of the year is that much thinner. Sony needs to move the PS3 THIS YEAR, or else they have problems beyond the PS2 users upgrading to PS3, and that is the developers not upgrading to PS3.

Microsoft needs something to jumpstart the Xbox, but GTA wasn't going to do it anyway, but another high profile game could help them pull in more casual players (you know, the kind that don't know about the HD capabilities of the PS3 or 360). The people who would buy a 360 for GTA, though, would likely buy it for other games this fall, anyway. They just need to start selling more, because the 360 hasn't been selling nearly as well since the compitition came in.

It's not a death blow for either system, but for one that needs to move consoles or risk losing developers to the Wii, and another that needs to revive sales, the delay hurts both.

PS3 doesn't yet have any "system sellers". However there is potential for one or two to become system sellers. Sony's plan, it seems, is to have an overall good lineup and use that to push systems. Besides so far, 360 has only one confirmed system seller: Halo 3. Bioshock and Mass Effect are not system sellers yet. On to GTA4. Think about this, MS paid or is going to pay $50 million for 2 episodes. That means at least 1 million people will have to but both episodes at $25 a piece just to break even. More likely, MS will be charging $30-$40 per episode. And how much extra content can you really fit onto a 360 anyway. Not to be a d1ck, but when you consider save games and other downloads, the 360 doesn't have that much space to add a significant amount of content. Say, for example, the downloads are 1GB each, that's about 1/7th of aa 360 HDD. (Assuming you take out 5GB for the 360 OS) Also, demos are coming out that are over 1GB and they only last 30 min, sometimes less. A lot less, I'm looking at you Heavenly Sword. So if the downloads are even higher? It will force everyone to get the 120HDD. Lastly, who wants to spend $120-$150 for a game?

No it's not PS3's fault. HOW does it make sense to you to delay BOTH titles in this desperate time for Take Two, if only the PS3 version was having trouble. Everyone said the 360 build was poor - the.game.was.not.finished.
By the time it is, I fully expect the PS3 version to be far superior due to utilisation of EDGE tools and added help.
