Graphics Aside-by-Side: Killzone 3, Rage, Crysis 2

Tom Marcks:

"When it comes to graphics on consoles, a number of awesome looking games springs to mind. But no games stir as much controversy as the big shooters, and that's Killzone 3, Crysis 2 and Rage. But there's more to a game than graphics, and that's what "graphics aside-by-side" is all about."

Am I the only one who is getting sick of all the comotion over graphics between these games? What ever happened to games being judged on the gameplay? I will almost definatly recieve many disagree's for this post, but if that is the consequence of voicing my opinion, so be it. Crysis 2 & Rage are going to be incredible, why? Because they offer BOTH great graphics and great gameplay, Killzone 3 will be good, but not great. Why? Because it only offers Generic gameplay to back up its great graphics...

HorsePowerr5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

So far, Killzone 3 looks better than Crysis 2 and RAGE in my opinion.
Crysis 2 failed to impress me and RAGE looks like another Borderlands.
But that just me.

Poseidon5065d ago

killzone 3 has better textures and a better quality to it than crysis(consoles) and rage. graphics are really top notch as well, when i set my vizio to advanced adaptive luma to medium it has just the right amount of black to it, where it gives it a perfect feel when i fut the RGB range on full its even better.

HolyOrangeCows5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

How about discussing the more important aspects, like AI?

http://www.youtube.com/watc...
The SECOND Killzone had better AI than that. Look at the aliens piddle about and that one lets you stand next to him for 5 seconds.
As for its graphics, as compressed as the video is, you can still find some major evidence of lack of AA, especially at the part where he fires off the shotgun. It runs smooth, though, that's good at least.

As for RAGE, all I've really seen for the most part are those guys who charge at you. The only special thing they do is jump over obstacles, and bounce off walls sometimes.
As for its graphics, they look nice and smooth, but they also almost look cel-shaded and sort of cartoony. Perhaps comparing its graphics to KZ3 and Crysis 2 isn't exactly a good idea, considering the style is a bit different.

It all seems a bit early to judge. Remember when people claimed that Metro 2033 was going to be the best graphics on a console? See how that worked out when people looked past the compressed videos on the internets and got a hold of a copy of their own?

raztad5065d ago

I mostly agree with the article. The strengths and weaknesses of every game are in line with what I think. But I would add: RAGE has NO destructibility, NO dynamic environments. The sharp MEGATEXTURES is static as hell. There is very few happening on screen, but two o three guys and perhaps someone with a bazooka. I have to rewatch the videos but I dont remember good particle effects, or awesome lighting. Get ready for Doom 3 at 60fps folks. This game is fully optimized for xbox360 arch.

Although I wasnt impressed by Crysis 2 particle effects I must say than overall it is a much more impressive game than RAGE. It boast really good textures, and the environment is dynamic. I have hopes the nanosuit makes Crysis 2 gameplay not so linear, offering you diversity.

Finally KZ3. Fully agree with the article. This game put the PS3 under a very nice work out. With better textures than KZ2, 10xbigger levels, MLAA, and a lot more, I think KZ3 is the winner.

Now, besides which is the winner I must say: BOTH consoles are up for some fine looking games. KZ3, RAGE and Crysis 2 are gorgeous games, so everybody has something to look forward.

BABY-JEDI5065d ago

All these games will be GREAT!!!!
But Killzone is pushing the boundaries to a greater degree on consoles IMO ; )

Legosz5065d ago

Fallout 3 on PC looks better then all these games. (With the NMC mod)

Conloles5065d ago

FFS YOU ARE INBRED....

You're so biased that you don't take into consideration that Rage and Crysis 2 are OPEN WORLD. THIS MEANS THAT ITS NOT A LEVEL THAT'S SEALED OFF AND YOU CAN ONLY GO IN ONE WAY. This is how KZ3 is able to make the graphics only look slightly better (for consoles not even close on PC).

Your opinion may differ from others and seeing how no one has played these 3 yet, I don't know why you're trying to pass your opinion off as fact. One my be just as generic as the other. Won't know until the games are released. They all look great and I have high expectations for all 3.

telekineticmantis5065d ago

YOur bias shines bright. What killzone has shown us is tons of action. The fact that they have cinematic deaths just brings out new possibilities on killing groups of enemies. It's basically open world seeing as the levels are 10 times the size of killzone 2. We've gottne more details about the unique things killzone 3 will bring at it's release then any other shooter we've seen at E3 yet this is the shooter you choose to call generic. Just stick to your xbox kid since you love it soo much

Kingdom Come5065d ago

I've played through the entire campaign of Crysis and Killzone 2, the sequels aren't going to be a drastically different. Rage looks great and hardly generic, RPG, Driving, Weapon customisation, and intense story, character customisation, multiplayer, great graphics.

UnwanteDreamz5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

Oh BS Kingdom you got caught being an idiot in your comment and then you tried and failed at covering your tracks. Sequals are generally...oops screwed right there. Your comment was a generalization not grounded in fact but instead opinion.

Care to try again?

BTW since you played Crysis care to tell me why it is not generic and KZ2 is? I have a feeling your explanation is going to make me laugh.

First off Killzone 3 looks the best but why compare now when it releases NEXT YEAR and also Rage comes in second for me then Crysis 3rd.

GWAVE5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

Just my opinion....

Crysis 2 looks great, but in many ways C2 and Rage have yet to surpass the graphics of Killzone 2, let alone KZ3. I played through KZ2 this past week and it still has the best FPS graphics on the market. And don't forget how many people hated on the original Crysis for "generic gameplay". Oh, but SHOCK AND AWE, now that it's coming to consoles, the Crysis franchise looks sweet! Wow, I didn't see that coming...

And guess what? I enjoyed the gameplay of KZ2 as well. *gasp* Somehow the enemy AI, cover system, and balanced weapons didn't strike me as generic *doublegasp*

hennessey865065d ago

That must be the PC with 8 GB of RAM.

Crysis needs a PC with 8 GB of RAM to look better than Killzone 2.

Try competing with Killzone 2 on the PS3. Crysis on the Console is nowhere near Killzone 2.

fullmetal2975065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

The game itself needs 2gb of ram and runs just fine with 4gb. I have the game and it performs very well on my rig. Of course you are going to make that assumption because you never played the game.

TotalPS3Fanboy5065d ago

Still doesn't change parts of what I said.

"Try competing with Killzone 2 on the PS3. Crysis on the Console is nowhere near Killzone 2."

And yes, I have played Crysis on my PC. And no, it did not look that good without high resolution texture mods.

fullmetal2975065d ago

"Still doesn't change parts of what I said."

What said was and I qoute, "Crysis needs a PC with 8 GB of RAM to look better than Killzone 2". Crysis doesn't need 8gb of ram to run and look amazing. Like I said before, my PC can the game just fine and it is running at maxed settings and looks like what you see on the screenshot.

"I have played Crysis on my PC. And no, it did not look that good without high resolution texture mods."

O'rly? What spec were you running Crysis at what settings? And do you know the name the specific mod?

TotalPS3Fanboy5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

"Like I said before, my PC can the game just fine and it is running at maxed settings and looks like what you see on the screenshot."

Again, that's on the PC. Try running Crysis on the PC with 512 MB of RAM only with a 3 GH CPU with a Nvidia 7600 card (or whatever the equivalent of the PS3 specs) and see how good it looks compare to Killzone 2/3 on the PS3.

"What spec were you running Crysis at what settings? And do you know the name the specific mod?"

I played Crysis at 1024 by 800 with 4X AA and 4X Mip (everything else was set to max, like texture details, particles, etc.) on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ running at 2.91 GHz with 4 GB of system RAM and a Nvidia graphic card with 512 MB of RAM onboard.

When I get deep into the forest, the game slow down to a crawl. And the graphics wasn't even that good, and nowhere near that picture posted above. That picture posted above must have been a realistic high resolution texture mod or something.

And again, all these stuff don't matter. We're comparing a high end PC game to a PS3 game.

Try comparing Crysis on the Console to Killzone 2/3 instead (where Crysis on the console does not have the advantages of a highly superior PC), and we can see that Killzone 2/3 looks better than Crysis on the console.

fullmetal2975065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

" Try running Crysis on the PC with 512 MB of RAM only with a 3 GH CPU with a Nvidia 7600 card."

Cryengine 2 is a badly optimize engine for the PC and is designed run on general hardware while Killzone 2/3 is specific tailored and heavily optimized to the PS3's hardware, so saying so-and-so specs similar to the consoles can't Crysis is a poor argument. If game was specifically developed for the hardware specs you mentioned then I'm sure it will run much on that hardware alone.

"I played Crysis at 1024 by 800 with 4X AA and 4X Mip (everything else was set to max, like texture details, particles, etc.) on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ running at 2.91 GHz with 4 GB of system RAM and a Nvidia graphic card with 512 MB of RAM onboard."

RAM alone doesn't determine the performance of games. The video card and CPU is more important than the RAM. I have the same amount of RAM but have Phenom II x4 CPU and HD5850 but get better performance. You don't mention the particular video card which is important since most PC games are uses more GPU than the CPU. Simply switching to maybe the HD 5750 or higher will guarantee more frames.

"Try comparing Crysis on the Console to Killzone 2/3 instead"
The Cryengine 3 engine is a mutiplatform engine and isn't made for specific hardware set. If Crtek concentrated a specific platform they already understood, maybe the PC, and had the funds and time then the game will look much better.

Christopher5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

One word: incomparable

@disagrees: Gotta love you guys. You take three games that have vastly different art direction and try to say which is the best when in the end it will all lead to opinion of the look rather than actual technical evaluation.

Downtown boogey5065d ago

As far as games go, they're all comparable but the timing could be further contemplated.

Christopher5065d ago

I think determining which one has the 'best graphics' just isn't possible because it all comes down to individual opinion when they all look as good as they do. One might have better lighting, another textures, another particle effects, and so on. You can't place these items on a scale of importance and rate them without bringing your own opinion into play. Heck, and that's not even taking into account the art direction, which affects opinion even more.

People need to give up on claiming one game or another to have the 'best graphics' and just say it's their favorite.

Biggest5065d ago

From these videos you can see that one of the games has all of what you said can be compared and on a much larger scale than the other two. The game types are the same. The graphics aim is very similar, especially Killzone 3 and Crysis 2. Killzone 3 has something going on everywhere, while Crysis 2 has some things happening sometimes, and Rage has something going on directly in front of you from time to time. I won't go further than that. Killzone 3 easily does more than the other two games. Killzone 3 easily has better graphics that the other two.

Hanif-8765065d ago

Killzone 3 looks better than all of them in its Pre-Alpha build, so just imagine what it will look like when its completed. Furthermore, i have never seen a game improved so much from its pre-alpha build like KZ2 did. So if thats to go by then KZ3 will probably be the best looking FPS on consoles until the next generation machines roll out.

Sharingan_no_Kakashi5065d ago

KZ3 will rape the console versions of Crysis and Rage. The real comp will be against KZ3 and the PC versions. And personally I think KZ3 can win.

1. tie: Rage & Crysis (underrated)

2. Killzone 3

Independent_Charles5065d ago

how do you know. none of them is out yet

Independent_Charles5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

your correct and incorrect. yes you get a good understanding but these games still have months of development in them which means graphical tweaks and upgrades are still going on through out development but i get where your coming from an you make a fair point. :)

muDD5065d ago

If people would leave their fanboi glasses at home and look at the demos... currently rage and crysis have more colors, and textures, with rage having the better animations. Killzone is a great looking games, but it only displays 2 main colors: grey, and brown. This is their art style and it is obvious that there are fans of this art style... to each their own... some will say killzone will look better, because they enjoy this art style. but on a tech stand point diplaying three colors and lack of texture detail kind of takes away from any games graphical advantages. This is why killzone will not be the best FPS out of these 3... it is because the other two have better textures, better lighting, better animation (rage) and better environments. Leading devs are already saying that id's new engine is doing things with textures that have never been done before... killzone's enging is not getting this praise. Because it lacks textures.

No you don't have these games at home so the only thing we can judge right now is the visuals. It's sad to see howmany gamers judge a games gameplay by watching it on youtube, instead of playing it.

StitchJones5065d ago

I so agree! Let's just get a good playing game and not worry about the friggin graphics for once... please!

Inside_out5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

Rage wins this showdown based on the vids they showed which were not very good.

Showing KZ clips pieced together to appear like the game was on the move compared to the actual gameplay of Crysis was misleading. KZ is basically a corridor shooter. The one scene where in Crysis, the guy shot out the window and jumped thru it was insane. The on rails section of KZ is as arcady as it gets.

Rage is an open world game where you will meet a different enemy type with different AI abilities at every new location. In killzone and I assume Crysis you face the same enemies over and over again. What rage is doing is totally different and I think will change the way people view games. They claim you won't see the same environments twice...ambitious indeed.

SephireX5065d ago (Edited 5065d ago )

RAGE and Crysis 2 on PC will rape KZ3 graphically. However, KZ3 might be better than the console versions graphically. Gameplay wise, who knows until we play all three. I loved KZ2 so I'm expecting KZ3 to be awesome. RAGE looks good and a lot better than Borderlands. Crysis 2 looks good but I'll need to play it to make a proper judgment. Bottom line, they will probably be all great games that we'll all enjoy playing so we'll see which is better when they come out.

JsonHenry5065d ago

They all 3 look fantastic. Better than what most expected out of these consoles. Everyone should be happy and stop fighting over which one looks best because even the most close minded person couldn't say with a straight face that all 3 were less than good looking.

Still looks secure 2 gens later... one of my favorite ps3 moments. With 3D and move the game is on another level

MadLad1140d ago

PC almost always ends up the best place to play games, even if it takes a while.

What would you rather play decades down the line? A game at a fixed resolution and frame, considering you have a working disc, and the hardware?
Or run it on an emulator that can update the experience all around, and let you use whatever control input you prefer?

If you insist on the former, it's really only for the sake of nostalgia.

Applejack1140d ago

I disagree. The main draw for consoles has always be the simplicity of just putting the disc in / downloading it and playing without worrying about anything else. The average person just wouldn’t want to deal with emulation even though it’s very important for preservation.

Terry_B1140d ago

Even emulators are super simple to use.

jukins1140d ago

Youre getting flak because people on here thibk of themselves as pc wizards. But honestly most poeple try and go get emulators and romz they end up with malware.. yes theyre "easy" if you know the basics but alot of people dont. That said the fact that its taken nearly 20 years to get a sustantially better experience for ps3 games than on its native system shows the complexity of getting bc to work. Sony, if they have any intention, should just invest in a vastly better psnow experience.

1140d ago
Vegamyster1140d ago

jukins

Most people who emulate don't get malware, you'd have to be going to some weird sites for that to happen, heck years ago people were getting sketchier ad's resulting in malware warning on this site if you didn't have a ad-blocker lol.

SinkingSage1140d ago

Can't get malware if you legally dump your own games, which you should.

Rachel_Alucard1140d ago (Edited 1140d ago )

That's fine if that's the main draw, but it doesn't make it a better experience, just a preference. Having the freedom to do the things you can do on PC is what the appeal of PC is. Buying a game on PC means you never have to worry about the console makers just deciding the next hardware shouldn't support the generation anymore, which means everything you bought is stuck on that hardware instead of moving up with everything else. Nintendo uses this tactic to keep reselling the same games over and over at inflated prices. Sony cut all previous gens off the PS4 and sold it back to people in a poor attempt with PSnow. While the PS5 supports PS4 games, that may not be the case in the next gen after this. No to mention shutting off all the previous stores and updates completely. Even MS stopped making new BC titles at some point, so now there's a big list with 17 pages of titles that are not playable on Xbone and are just trapped on older gen. That's not a problem on PC, the reverse happens where you only have to worry if your hardware can play the newest releases at ultra with no issue.

Also wouldn't mind seeing a new Wild Arms game remake or HD remaster, the Xenosaga trilogy, a new Parasite Eve, a new Dino Crisis just too many games to list that are forgotten and left in the dark now adays.

The PS3 is difficult to emulate. PS3 backwards compatibility on PS5 would require translation from PowerPC to x86. Additionally the PS5 likely would have to mimic the PS3’s GPU and CPU.

This is what pops up on my web browser. So I can't even read the site. So, forget that. They don't need my data.

But let's get something straight. OG Xbox had around 1,001 games. How many are BC on Series X? **39** THIRTY NINE. Come on! That's wack BC. You can't tell me that's a complete list. Talking about commitment. Game preservation. Ridiculous. Covers nothing.

How many games released on Xbox 360? Around 2085. How many are BC?
568. That's it. Around 1,517 are **MISSING** Stop playing. Tired of that nonsense.

Anyway, the only games I really want from PS3 that would be awesome are Motorstorm and MGS4. I'll take BC. I'll take a remaster. I'll take a remake. If not those, then Killzone 2. And in VR, maybe Sports Champions, House of the Dead Overkill and the Time Crisis games.

That's all I need. But we've gone over BC again and again in every possible way. It wasn't that important because Sony sold 115 million consoles without it. That's proof enough with no outcry. And PS5 has damn near all 4,000+ PS4 games BC. It's not PS1,PS2 and PS3. But that's plenty. I'll take more but you get what you get.
