Graphics Aside-by-Side: Killzone 3, Rage, Crysis 2

Am I the only one who is getting sick of all the comotion over graphics between these games? What ever happened to games being judged on the gameplay? I will almost definatly recieve many disagree's for this post, but if that is the consequence of voicing my opinion, so be it. Crysis 2 & Rage are going to be incredible, why? Because they offer BOTH great graphics and great gameplay, Killzone 3 will be good, but not great. Why? Because it only offers Generic gameplay to back up its great graphics...

Crysis 2 failed to impress me and RAGE looks like another Borderlands.

killzone 3 has better textures and a better quality to it than crysis(consoles) and rage. graphics are really top notch as well, when i set my vizio to advanced adaptive luma to medium it has just the right amount of black to it, where it gives it a perfect feel when i fut the RGB range on full its even better.

The SECOND Killzone had better AI than that. Look at the aliens piddle about and that one lets you stand next to him for 5 seconds.
As for its graphics, as compressed as the video is, you can still find some major evidence of lack of AA, especially at the part where he fires off the shotgun. It runs smooth, though, that's good at least.

As for RAGE, all I've really seen for the most part are those guys who charge at you. The only special thing they do is jump over obstacles, and bounce off walls sometimes.
As for its graphics, they look nice and smooth, but they also almost look cel-shaded and sort of cartoony. Perhaps comparing its graphics to KZ3 and Crysis 2 isn't exactly a good idea, considering the style is a bit different.

It all seems a bit early to judge. Remember when people claimed that Metro 2033 was going to be the best graphics on a console? See how that worked out when people looked past the compressed videos on the internets and got a hold of a copy of their own?

I mostly agree with the article. The strengths and weaknesses of every game are in line with what I think. But I would add: RAGE has NO destructibility, NO dynamic environments. The sharp MEGATEXTURES is static as hell. There is very few happening on screen, but two o three guys and perhaps someone with a bazooka. I have to rewatch the videos but I dont remember good particle effects, or awesome lighting. Get ready for Doom 3 at 60fps folks. This game is fully optimized for xbox360 arch.

Although I wasnt impressed by Crysis 2 particle effects I must say than overall it is a much more impressive game than RAGE. It boast really good textures, and the environment is dynamic. I have hopes the nanosuit makes Crysis 2 gameplay not so linear, offering you diversity.

Finally KZ3. Fully agree with the article. This game put the PS3 under a very nice work out. With better textures than KZ2, 10xbigger levels, MLAA, and a lot more, I think KZ3 is the winner.

Now, besides which is the winner I must say: BOTH consoles are up for some fine looking games. KZ3, RAGE and Crysis 2 are gorgeous games, so everybody has something to look forward.

YOur bias shines bright. What killzone has shown us is tons of action. The fact that they have cinematic deaths just brings out new possibilities on killing groups of enemies. It's basically open world seeing as the levels are 10 times the size of killzone 2. I've played through the entire campaign of Crysis and Killzone 2, the sequels aren't going to be a drastically different. Rage looks great and hardly generic, RPG, Driving, Weapon customisation, and intense story, character customisation, multiplayer, great graphics.

Crysis 2 looks great, but in many ways C2 and Rage have yet to surpass the graphics of Killzone 2, let alone KZ3. I played through KZ2 this past week and it still has the best FPS graphics on the market. And don't forget how many people hated on the original Crysis for "generic gameplay". Oh, but SHOCK AND AWE, now that it's coming to consoles, the Crysis franchise looks sweet! Wow, I didn't see that coming...

Again, that's on the PC. Try running Crysis on the PC with 512 MB of RAM only with a 3 GH CPU with a Nvidia 7600 card (or whatever the equivalent of the PS3 specs) and see how good it looks compare to Killzone 2/3 on the PS3.

I played Crysis at 1024 by 800 with 4X AA and 4X Mip (everything else was set to max, like texture details, particles, etc.) on an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ running at 2.91 GHz with 4 GB of system RAM and a Nvidia graphic card with 512 MB of RAM onboard.

When I get deep into the forest, the game slow down to a crawl. And the graphics wasn't even that good, and nowhere near that picture posted above. That picture posted above must have been a realistic high resolution texture mod or something.

And again, all these stuff don't matter. We're comparing a high end PC game to a PS3 game.

Try comparing Crysis on the Console to Killzone 2/3 instead (where Crysis on the console does not have the advantages of a highly superior PC), and we can see that Killzone 2/3 looks better than Crysis on the console.

Cryengine 2 is a badly optimize engine for the PC and is designed run on general hardware while Killzone 2/3 is specific tailored and heavily optimized to the PS3's hardware, so saying so-and-so specs similar to the consoles can't Crysis is a poor argument. If game was specifically developed for the hardware specs you mentioned then I'm sure it will run much on that hardware alone.

RAM alone doesn't determine the performance of games. The video card and CPU is more important than the RAM. I have the same amount of RAM but have Phenom II x4 CPU and HD5850 but get better performance. You don't mention the particular video card which is important since most PC games are uses more GPU than the CPU. Simply switching to maybe the HD 5750 or higher will guarantee more frames.

The Cryengine 3 engine is a mutiplatform engine and isn't made for specific hardware set. If Crtek concentrated a specific platform they already understood, maybe the PC, and had the funds and time then the game will look much better.

I think determining which one has the 'best graphics' just isn't possible because it all comes down to individual opinion when they all look as good as they do. One might have better lighting, another textures, another particle effects, and so on. You can't place these items on a scale of importance and rate them without bringing your own opinion into play. Heck, and that's not even taking into account the art direction, which affects opinion even more.

People need to give up on claiming one game or another to have the 'best graphics' and just say it's their favorite.

From these videos you can see that one of the games has all of what you said can be compared and on a much larger scale than the other two. The game types are the same. The graphics aim is very similar, especially Killzone 3 and Crysis 2. Killzone 3 has something going on everywhere, while Crysis 2 has some things happening sometimes, and Rage has something going on directly in front of you from time to time. I won't go further than that. Killzone 3 easily does more than the other two games. Killzone 3 easily has better graphics that the other two.

Killzone 3 looks better than all of them in its Pre-Alpha build, so just imagine what it will look like when its completed. Furthermore, i have never seen a game improved so much from its pre-alpha build like KZ2 did. If people would leave their fanboi glasses at home and look at the demos... currently rage and crysis have more colors, and textures, with rage having the better animations. Killzone is a great looking games, but it only displays 2 main colors: grey, and brown. This is their art style and it is obvious that there are fans of this art style... to each their own... some will say killzone will look better, because they enjoy this art style. but on a tech stand point diplaying three colors and lack of texture detail kind of takes away from any games graphical advantages. This is why killzone will not be the best FPS out of these 3... it is because the other two have better textures, better lighting, better animation (rage) and better environments. Leading devs are already saying that id's new engine is doing things with textures that have never been done before... killzone's enging is not getting this praise. Because it lacks textures.

Rage wins this showdown based on the vids they showed which were not very good.

Showing KZ clips pieced together to appear like the game was on the move compared to the actual gameplay of Crysis was misleading. KZ is basically a corridor shooter. The one scene where in Crysis, the guy shot out the window and jumped thru it was insane. The on rails section of KZ is as arcady as it gets.

Rage is an open world game where you will meet a different enemy type with different AI abilities at every new location. In killzone and I assume Crysis you face the same enemies over and over again. What rage is doing is totally different and I think will change the way people view games. They claim you won't see the same environments twice...ambitious indeed.

RAGE and Crysis 2 on PC will rape KZ3 graphically. However, KZ3 might be better than the console versions graphically. Gameplay wise, who knows until we play all three. I loved KZ2 so I'm expecting KZ3 to be awesome. RAGE looks good and a lot better than Borderlands. Crysis 2 looks good but I'll need to play it to make a proper judgment. Bottom line, they will probably be all great games that we'll all enjoy playing so we'll see which is better when they come out.

The KZ3 clips looks great. You won't be able to judge until final products are relased. Until then, they all look the same to me, like FPS'.

Everyone knows here that Crysis 2 will be way better, because it isn't limited like KillZone 3 where its a console exclusive and consoles you cant upgrade.

Killzone 3 might look good but Crysis 2 will be better graphic wise because it isnt limited cause its being released on the PC version while KillZone 3 is limited so there is so much you can do on the consoles and then you hit a stopping point.

While PC there is no stopping point, they keep getting upgrades every couple months, while consoles get a upgrade every 5-10 years.

They aren't really the "next gen" that you think it is. It's still going to be DX11 cards only a little more powerful. "Generations" are classified by DX version. DX9 < DX10 < DX11 TBH a new series from ATI is a little soon, if they would just fix the AA issues on the 5xxx everything would be good.

Anyway, for the most part you're right. Those willing to spend a few grand in video cards will end up with the better end visuals. However, any pc gamer can tell you their hobby can and usually is requiring thousands more dollars than the consoles.

It really comes down to what's a better deal for you, the gamer/consumer. Personally I'd take the high powered ass pc over a console. I would much rather spend 8-10grand on a ridiculously powerful gaming rig/setup than paying 2500-3000 on a ps3/120hz LED Tv.

Crysis 1 was a killer graphic game because it was the FIRST (and still the only) game to reproduce a jungle with an impressive photorealism / physics.
Crysis 2 is awesome, but it lost a lot of fashion because the new envoirment is a City (something we already saw TONS OF TIMES) and not a full explorable island. Also, Killzone 3 graphic look better than Crysis (at least on consoles).

I can't speak about Rage... it look REALLY REALLY GOOD, in both characters and envoirments. But i'm 100% sure that the general immersion that Killzone will bring to us is way way way way better.

Those 3 games I am interested in and will probably buy. I don't care which game has best graphics as long as they all look great, which so far with the video's I've seen they do.
Crysis and Rage, for multi-plat games look fantastic. They will probably be very similar on each system. Only be able to see the difference if watched on two screens side by side.
I will be getting them for PS3, but whatever you buy them for you'll get the same enjoyment out of the games. There is not enough difference in graphics now to argue about.

Why people are incapable of grasping this is beyond me. But it goes both ways. This is the reason this console war is so ridiculous. I'm going with Killzone 3. It looks amazing, and it's the only one of these games I'm definitely getting. Rage and Crysis 2 can wait for a price drop before I buy them. Also, to anyone who says Killzone is generic, go buy a PS3 and play it. The game is awesome, and it has a great first person cover system, which isn't generic at all. Also, the class systemin online multiplayer is awesome. How many games can you become an invisible sniper? Not many I can think of. saying that.being a pc gamer i know how high crytek set the bar when making there games look good IE crysis.why you need a beast of a computer not a puppy for xmas.
having said this kz3 was made adapted around ps3.and engine built at sametime. i would asume this video was useing a console version of crytek's crysis. if so then as i hoped.its nearly matched kz3 in graphics but thats cos it was useing the ps3 engine.disagree comming i know but true.also saying that crysis could been played on 360.IF that is the case you guys should thank crytek they actually showing you the power of the 360.cos it looks better than any of your games inc reach. as for ps3 boys this good wee have a new multi game engine i hope unreal engine dies at some point.
if this was a video of crysis on a pc then this not been set to maxed settings cos if it was they both ps3 and 360 look dated.

From a console perspective KZ3 still rapes Rage and Crysis 2 when it comes to graphics.
Though if I brought PC into the mix then Rage would look the best followed by Crysis 2.
Either way if your a PS3 gamer you get to experience all 3 games which is awesome.
I still think I might get Rage and Crysis 2 on PC.

Saw video came to conclusion that crysis 2 lighting is better just look at alien projectiles casting lights and shadows around them and on the characters weapon. But
for the rest it's kinda hard to judge both killzone 3 and crysis 2 looks awesome both will probably day 1.

Did you see rage game play? the enemies are Worse then bioshock splicers lol and bioshock came out in 2007?
Seriously I have no idea why you guys are hyping rage which is basically a less cell shaded version of borderlands. Not only that but rage looses in the technical capabilities as well. There is no destructible environments, cover system, it has bad Ai, particle effects etc. No multiplayer either or coop?

Crysis 2 looks like cod with a slightly different art design. Does Crysis 2 have online and coop? I don't remember hearing that and even if it does it still wont have the 32 player count killzone 3 multi player and coop.

Killzone 3 wins out with all the bells and whistles technically, graphically and the game play has been said to be more varied and more refined then ever as well as having the best immersion. There is no other fps this gen that has better immersion and makes you feel like a real soldier then in KILLZONE series.

call me when crysis or rage has jet packs, mechs, tanks, airships, drop ships, planes, and huge almost everything destructible type environments

Killzone is obviously the higher quality game. Not saying the others are bad and John Carmack, single-handlely crafted the FPS genre and has amazing technology to boot, but GG knows their tech as well. It just looks like a level or 2 above the others. imo.

Killzone 3 does not look higher quality at all. It looks softer, grainier, has a worse frame rate, muddy textures and the shadows are jaggy. Killzone 2 and 3 go for a high contrast look, where really dark colors are contrasted against light colors. It gives it a certain look, but it doesn't look as detailed or realistic as Crysis 2.

Rage has more of an artistic approach and is also a very beautiful game.

Crysis 2 = Rage > Killzone 3

I can only base it on what I have seen so far, and what I have seen so far makes me believe that K3 is in much better shape. I have nothing against Crysis, I will be buying both.

You're an idiot. Screen tearing in internet videos is not indicative of screen tearing existing in the game.

I see screen tearing in videos of games that I know for a fact have no screen tearing. For example, I have played through Uncharted 2 twice and it has zero screen tearing, yet in this video http://www.youtube.com/watc... you see tearing.

Videos often introduce screen tearing that isn't present in the actual games.

Rage doesn't even belong in this discussion. As Killzone 3 may even look better than Rage PC as the ID Tech 5 engine sucks and Killzone 3 is still Pre Alpha.

Crysis 2 is coming along nice I guess but the gameplay still looks boring as so the rubber item your holding, oh is that your gun? I hope they fix that as your weapons in Killzone 2 have more detail than Crysis PC.

In my opinion killzone 3 looks better as a whole when you factor everything thats going on such as explosions, lighting, and AI .... but honestly who cares?
The reason why I say that is because there will always be a game that will come out on a later date that has better graphics, Here's an Example --> (Killzone 2 < Uncharted 2). Did that make Killzone 2 or any oher game released before Uncharted 2 came out less fun? No, and to be honest I think history will repeat and Uncharted 3 will be the game to beat graphically on consoles. Although I'll prob. get some disagrees for this since some people disagree that Uncharted 2 has the best graphics on Consoles as of now and that's fine, because everyone is entitled to there opinion. Bottom line is purchase the game/games that you will enjoy out of the three, I plan on buying all three because they all look fun as hell plain and simple ...
