As much as I think the guy needs to focus more on industry talk and less about wacky predictions, he's got a point. Sales for the PSP have dropped since the iPhone was introduced.

The iphone is cutting into the PSP's market. Why have a gaming platform with web and video with a descent size screen when you can have all that, and a phone, and thousands of apps, and GPS, etc...etc.

Now, as a gaming platform the PSP runs circles around the iphone, but there's no doubt that the iphone has partially cut into the PSP's market.

So, what's Sony's game? Are they happy with the market they have right now, or do we think they'll challenge the iphone? Perhaps a PSP phone with app store, video, music, on the fly movies, etc? But what could they do to differentiate themselves from the iPhone?

Otherwise, I must insist you rephrase you comment to read something a bit more accurate and representative of your sentiments like "It is my opinion that the PSP Go was a failure, although I acknowledge fully a total and complete ignorance of the costs versus revenue associated with the PSP GO and really can't back up this opinion with anything" rather then try to pass this off as fact.

Sony made some bad mistakes with things like piracy with the PSP. The games don't sell ANYWHERE near where a system with a 60 million person install base should. And it was foolish for them not to include a second stick. And they should have supported it more. And they could have been a bit more price conscious.

I just hope that the PSP was just an awkward transition into the handheld gaming world and that they have learned and apply that knowledge to releasing the 'PSP2'

PSP is heading toward sixty million sold world wide, sells very well in japan, sells an average of 10 million a year world wide. No other hand held has sold that well except for Nintendo's hand helds. Not many electronic devices sell 10 million a year, yet it's talked about like its a failure.

On another note the Ipod touch and Iphone should not be put in the same catagory as the DS and PSP. Games aren't making huge amounts of money on the Ipod when they average 1 dollar to 5 dollars and don't sell high volume for most games.

Seriously though, I been ready for PSP2 and hoping it comes with controls = DS3 no half stepping. I never liked the idea of PSPgo or the name. The prior models are great.

It's not going to sell like a gameboy , or DS IMO though cause it's more like a man's toy, then something parents would get for the kids, to keep them busy in the car. Still it has healthy sales , I just would not be expecting it to do insane #'s.

The real Problem with the PSP is the PIRACY, the library shrank because of that, if Sony makes an unhackeable PSP2, there will be No problem, more Devs will jump into making games and with the First Party Support everyone will enjoy a Beast

What Pachter doesn't know (and neither does anyone else other than Sony) is how much PSP software Sony is selling on PSN. They're making a killing on that software because they don't have to give the retailers a cut.

I know for me, personally, the PSP Go was a major factor in me buying a PSP in the first place. In the end, I found a really good deal on a 3000 and bought that instead. However, a majority of my software purchases are downloads. Even though I have a 3000, I still benefit from all the titles on PSN.

And yes, I realize I'm paying a premium for portability and convenience, but I'm sure I'm not the only one. And if there's many others like me, the Go hasn't been quite the "failure" everyone thinks it's been.

They still make a mint from it and to be fair the PSP is here to help developers make PS2 type games for handhelds as the architecture is very similar. The PSP's main problem is piracy and Sony cannot escape it however they should like MS find some way of using it. MS do it right as they use piracy to boost console sales by at least 1-2 million per year with the ban hammer tactics.

I mean i work at a gaming store and PSP software sales are really slow, but on the other hand a lot of people come in asking for PSP's 1000-2000 hummm (wander why LOL), Sony is not doomed with the PSP cause the are still going to sell lots of systems, but developers in the other hand are doomed if they spend resources on the PSP. But Pachter sounds like he recommends Sony to pull out of the portable console market entirely, which is ignorant to say since Sony has done well overall with the PSP since 2005.

The PSPGo has failed primarily because of the high price point. Sony can cause a resurgence for the PSPGo by comboing a significant price drop (at least down to $175) with a blockbuster title (like MGS Peace Walker.)

Apple and the Iphone have done well with gaming app sales, but the Iphone cannot provide the same core gamer experience as a true portable console like the PSP. The Iphone doesn't even have a real, tangible interface to interact with games; it is all simply touch-screen interaction.

The current gen psp, yes it is doomed like all handheld and consoles it will last for a number of yrs, then be replaced by a new generation. The pspgo is not the psp2, think of it as the psx(ps2), it was probably an experiment to see how well the gaming public would respond to an all digital game system.

I fully expect the psp2 to have some similarities to the go, however i don't think it will be digital only.

Last I check PS3 was in 2nd an 360 was dead last, maybe do to the lack of games that aren't shooter games and the lack of smarts in Japan marketing to say "Yes we want FF13 for the 360 in Japan".

Plus 360 seems to be going downhill with only one game to hold it up an that is Halo Reach, but that is it Vs all of the PS3 line up and the Wii is even seeing some drops in it sells.

May not be a big drop, but a drop in sells is a drop, but in the long run, the Wii did pretty good for itself and so did the 360 (Mostly do to dumb people keep buying a new system right after theirs RROD or breaks on them).

Plus last I check it wasn't to easy to find a PS3 an you can find a 360 anywhere, heck found one in the trash once (But no way it would work).

While Sony tried a different angle by offering people more multimedia options, it seems that it forgot about the important part, which is the games. If it had better support then it may have been given much more attention. It is a shame with regards to the PSP go as it just rendered physical PSP games useless. It also probably made new users feel like they were being left out in terms of older games not on Playstation store. At least Nintendo always made sure to support DS games on all of the different models so far.

now i know that' above may seem like too much to ask for but a lot of these games are already way down in price so.. it wouldn't really effect them as much, however it would help them tie in both platforms.

those without a psp? can easily get themselves a psp, and explore what the portable device has to offer.

also if Sony were smart they would think about adding trophies and the ability to message your psn buddies on the ps3 via the psp (vice versa). Believe me, this will keep many more interested.

lower the PSP GO price to the exact same amount or maybe 20$ less than the original PSP, since it can only play digitally downloaded games, while the original PSP can do both, in terms of playing UMDs still and playing Digitally downloadable games.

But regarding Patcher's comment about the PSP as a whole, what BS, PSP is probably the most successful handheld ever to face off against one of the most biggest handheld names ever: Gameboy/DS. No other company has done numbers what PSP has done except for Nintendo, no one.

Idk but this reminds me of when ps3 launched. Everyone was yeling abandon ship, ps3 will fall, sony bankrupt etc etc some dude some bich w.e and look where sony sits today, alot of 360 fans got a ps3. Some got rid of their 360 and some didnt. The PSP is not gaining any ground, is constantly getting beat up by the D.S. and will never outsell its main competition, the D.S.

PSP needs a big change, I say that for PSP2, Sony really bites into Apple. Think about it, the games Apple offers are shi***, Sony can offer shi*** games like that via PSN and have PSP2 have a ton of PSP (backwards compatible) and PSP2 games via PSN.

PSP just doesn't have enough titles coming out. It's weakest area is the software. PSP GO may have succeeded if it had a fair enough library to boot.

When it comes to hand helds, the NDS is by far the more superior. Even though it is technologically inferior, the NDS has so much more innovative titles and creative talent involved in their games.

Certain psp titles however, have been phenomenal(1 good psp game is worth probably 3 good nds games), the biggest problem is simply they are too far and few. Even though support for PSP is much more higher in Japan, the amount of titles released still fails in comparison to the number of games released each month for the NDS.

Honestly i think Sony should stop making further improvements for their handheld, and devote more money into making quality games for it! I really never understood why they released the GO. It had fail written all over it.

What Sony should do is release the PSP 2. Add a right analog stick and make some other upgrades and it will do great. A lot of games need a second stick. It's too complicated to control a lot of PSP games. Just do it, Sony.

I just love misleading article titles, this has nothing to do with the PS3. Also, because of this reception to the PSP, it probably prevents Microsoft from jumping into the handheld market, due to the fact that Microsoft never innovates or takes risks as a company and always goes into reliable and popular markets and sucks the life out of them (paid DLC, DVD9, Non-reliable hardware, paid subscription, etc.) It's like Sony has become the #1 scapegoat in the world while everyone bends over for Microsoft and Nintendo.

Apple and Nintendo have the largest market share but the psp owns the competition. The DS has few games that would entertain a person over 5 years of age. The itouch doesn't work well with games because of its touch functionality. Oh but of course Mr Patcher is correct, as always. After all, the psp has no great games.
