the game is more than just shooting. you can beat the whole game without firing a single round of ammunition. you can rely upon your tech biotic powers. that's unheard of for many shooters don't you think?

apart from having a lengthy campaign mode enriched with many decisions to make. the only decisions you make in all shooters is whether or not you should shoot your opponent...and it's always going to be the same answer, so you'll always know your outcome. with mass effect it's not like that shooting doesn't have to be a priority, if you don't want it to be.

I'm about 8 hours in. It's not the greatest RPG ever. In fact, I'd call it a lesser RPG than its predecessor. I think most people like it just because it's a bit darker and has characters that are overall more gray or black than white in their actions, but much of it has been replaced with gunplay in the latest in lieu of a strong storyline with which to play in.

It might be the greatest action RPG game ever, though. I really like the action elements of the game and the RPG elements in between are more than enough to keep me going.

My personal favorite RPG of all time is still Planescape: Torment, and that games darker than Mass Effect 2 but is a true RPG and nothing else.

You're assuming a role of a fictional character the gamer builds in a story rich game while you level this character up. I'm playing the game now fighting to catch Thane and have not fired a shot. The Telekinesis is off the hook in this game, the telekinetic powers in this game is just as beefy as the guns play.

If ME is a shooter than almost every jRPG is a simple turn-based strategy game. Mass Effect has more role playing elements than any other so-called RPG. Role playing isn't about combat mechanics or boosting your stats. It's about choices and consequences. In ME you make decisions all the time - small ones, like being friendly or rude in a dialog, big ones, like saving/killing a teammate and huge ones, like deciding the fate of an entire race. And they all have consequences that influence gameplay and storyline. This is pure RPG. With fun combat mechanics that somehow bother people, who think that clicking "Attack->Heal->Summ on->Attack->Heal" has anything to do with role playing.

I have been playing the game and I agree. The RPG aspect of the game has been toned down since the first game. As much as the first game needed fixing I think they toned it back a bit too far.

but then again, I don't usually like traditional rpg's much, really hate turned based and I can't really get into micro managing every little aspect of xp etc. I like the style of a Epic story driven game, and role play with interesting charachters, add a little shooter combat and I really love sci-fi universes, I was sad Too Human missed its potential, on paper it had all the right elements to make a AAA game, but the execution was not there, ME2 executes everything very well so yes its perfect for me, it hits all the aspects I like...so yeah, its the best rpg I've played.

This game sounds great but I only own a PS3. I know I could play it on PC but for some reason I just don't care for gaming on PC. I am so backlogged on games right now that I decided to only buy FFXIII until I get caught up on some of the other games. Right now Demon's Souls is kicking my ass and I can't see being done with that for a long time. Such is life with family and full time employment.

Dragon Age, Demon's Souls, Persona 4 (if you wanna count as this gen), and ME1 and 2 are better than both of those, in my opinion. I really enjoyed Fallout 3, and would put it close with the others I listed. However, Oblivion was a downgrade in terms of funfactor (from Morrowind) and it was extremely boring.

Only if you have some set definition for what an RPG is, and there isn't one. The combat in ME is of a TPS, but the exploration, leveling, storyline and character development are much more indicative of a WRPG. So really, the game is more of a WRPG than a TPS, but I'm not sure why it matters, it's a great game. I do, however, hate when people label anything as "best ***" as if it's a fact and not an opinion, which is what the article did.

You could take all of the same class and succeed. Combat was instead simply you showed up and unless you quit playing you'd win. It didn't help the "AI" is the possibly the worst ever either. This auto-scailing sh*t also makes for games where everything is forgiving of f*cking retarded ass decisions and choices whether with your party, character stats, or strategies you use. Mass effect is like the burger king of RPG's. The "have it your way" RPG for people that don't like RPG's. They enjoy it because you don't have to know anything of the game to succeed. You can allocate points, gear, and part composition however you want.

RPG games are entirely about formulas and success via mathematical understanding with some luck thrown in via random factors. This casual approach where all of that is going to the way side so anyone who put money down can succeed defeats what a lot of gamers enjoyed about the genre.

Mass Effect is hailed as the only "rpg" a lot of gamers that don't like rpgs like because beyond the outward appearance on the UI and what Bioware said it's not one. Hur dur you play a role, levels, and items. EVERY game has that sh*t but only when that sh*t determines the outcome of success can it be truly called an RPG. A lot of "action" rpgs are really piss f*cking poor rpg's as well and that is exactly what mass effect is."

I loved gears. Played it five times through. But for me Gears was about sitting on the couch next to you brother/ friend and blasting the sh!t out of bugs.
What I didn't like about ME1 was how I couldn't go anywhere. I got to the mothership or whatever, did a whole lot of talking, and then said "f*ck it, I'm going to go read a book." It's not like I don't like deep games, It's that I thought ME1 was trying to be something it wasn't, and doing a bad job at it.

Oh, and I've have yet to find a western RPG that I like. Maybe that has something to do with it.

I haven't played many JRPGs that I liked, and it certainly wasn't the open world aspect that I liked about them. (I strongly dislike sandbox/openworld). But when did I complain about it being too open world? I don't see that in my comment.

And I've just never been able to get into WRPG's, despite trying. What I didn't like about ME1 was the amount of pointless dialog. It was like they said "Hey! look at this cool new speech wheel! Isn't it great?!" and overused it. Like I said, I got to the city ship thingy with the counsel, and quit. I couldn't find my ship, and I strongly disliked the shooting mechanics.

Western RPG's have come a long way, and J-Rpg's went into a strong decline ever since this generation began.

I havent finished Mass effect 2 yet, but it do is shaping up to be one of the best rpg's i ever played.
I rank it among the experiences i had with Xenogears, Suikoden 2, FF7, FF6, Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana.

When i finish Mass effect 2, theres a good chance il say Mass effect 2 tops them all.
Especially since Mass effect 2 is way more complex and good looking then the games i mentioned, and also got way stronger gameplay elements.

I personally think Mass effect 2 is one of the best rpg's ever, and i havent finished it yet, when i do, i might consider Mass effect 2 the very best ever.

And i have been gaming for 22 years by now, and swallowed hundreds of rpg's, my first rpg was on the MSX2 (Knightmare2), and my second one was the original Zelda on the NES.
My first console was an Atari 2600 but it didnt feature any rpg's.

Like i already mentioned, i played so many darn rpg's on the Snes/all gameboys/DS/PSP/PSone/PS2/360/ Megadrive/Gamegear/Mastersystem /Saturn/Dreamcast/Wii/Gamecube, by now i know what a great RPG plays like.

And Mass effect 2 ranks among the very top.

Equipment? You mean the armor and stuff I would equip in Resident Evil 5? In SOCOM? ME2's armor system is so bare. Taking away the armor skill tree was idiotic. Not to mention at least the weapons in games like MW2, RE5, SOCOM, Metal Gear Online had way way way more customization options than ME2.

Leveling? Every game has leveling up nowadays. Is MW2's online a RPG now? Bad Company 2 a RPG now? Dante's Inferno, a RPG? Metal Gear Online, a RPG?

Manageable party? Ghost Recon, SOCOM 1-3, Arma 2, etc.. all those tactical shooters are RPGs? Republic COmmando is a RPG now?

Item Shops and towns....Ok....Ratchet and Clank. Item Shops and towns.

More than 20 hours of gameplay? Ok this is just stupid. Far Cry 2's single player took me over 40 hours. Is Far Cry 2 a RPG?

Lots of Dialogue? Probably the most detailed RPG element in ME2. Yet, Heavy Rain can offer the same dialogue and choices....so is Heavy Rain a RPG?

Items and Pets? You mean like the items I used in RE5 or other games? In metal gear online?

pets? You mean the sentry gun in ME2? One class? Not to mention an Engineer in Team Fortress 2 has more "pets"

Sidequests? Confirmed. Prototype and inFamous are RPGs.

Weapon Upgrades? Army of Two, Ratchet and Clank, RE5, Dead Space etc.. Those are all RPGs.

This isn't a RPG. ME2 is a very good game. But it isn't an action game. It is an action game with more depth than say Gears of War. Unlike Gears of War, it has some mild RPG elements thrown in, and some squad tactics involved. That is what ME2 is. An action game with mild RPG elements.

Now, I read your post saying you played all these RPGs, yet you didn't name the PC platform. So that means you haven't played Fallout 2? Baldur's Gate 2? Diablo 2? World of Warcraft? Everquest? EVE Online? Planescape Torment? Those are true WRPG classics. Not Mass Effect.

And to whoever mentioned Diablo 2 as not being a RPG...how is Diablo 2 not a RPG? Have you even played Diablo 2?

tell me how it ranks up in the top with some of the best rpg's. doesn't rpg stand for role playing game meaning that you have control over almost anything you want on your charector. in me2 you have very small thing you can control you have like four thing to upgrade in term of your powers and then you can paint your suit and change it a littel. your gun upgrades are really lame you find a upgrade and have the choice to either put it on or leave it off and you only have a few from what i can tell. i have played for about 6 to 7 hours and have not found the rpg elements to be that great. i like the game in terms of controls and presentation, but they wanted to make it more like a shooter and that is what they did. still a good game, me3 better have way more rpg elements in it

It seems popular to debate what's a "true" RPG lately. I wasted enough time on this topic from RPG purists/ elitists with Demon's Souls, so count me out of this one. It was amusing in many ways to me because I've been playing RPGs since the mid-80s and am actual quite familiar with the genre. In fact, RPGs and adventure games have actually always been my favorite genres, and Chrono Trigger is my all-time favorite game, which cost me around $90 on SNES back in the day.

Anyway, regardless of whether a game meets one's definition of a a "true" RPG, these recent RPG hybrid games like Demon's Souls, Borderlands, and now Mass Effect 2 happen to be among the very best games on the market. Have fun in this circular, endless debate while I'm just enjoying these superb games.

Being as old a gamer as I am, you start to find games that have just been 'reformatted' or 'updated' for the new generation of kids. Like Dead Space - It's really Doom dressed in 'new skin'. Not to take away from the game but these good games aren't really all that 'new'.

The Mass Effect Franchise is my favorite RPG of this Gen. I am currently about 10 hours into the game, and there are moments in the game where i am like "Ah ya MAN!!!" because i transfered over my character, and the decisions you made in the first come up when you are not expecting it in ME2.

Trust me, I've probably played RPG games even before you knew what they were! If you're trying to use rhetoric to make my opinion look foolish, I'm afraid it won't work. I have ME2, it's a good game, but one thing it is not is an RPG. Honestly, it's a TPS!!!! There's nothing wrong with that, but to say that this game stands up against classic RPG's like Balders Gate, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, etc is just plain ludicrous!!! I like how people are calling this an RPG even though the skill system is pathetic, you can't change your gear unless your on the ship (or your allies), and there is a limited inventory (that you can't even access on the fly!!!!

You clearly don't understand what the definition of RPG is then. It's still an RPG, but it may not be the classic old school RPG that you are used too.

RPG's are evolving, and RPG elements are being adopted into may games, regardless if its a TPS, FPS or any other kind of genre. You are just used to RPG's from the 1st and 2nd generations and believe me, i have been playing RPG's since the first FF game on Nintendo.

Bottom line is, Mass Effect still falls under the Definition of RPG. It's funny how you call the WHOLE gaming industry ignorant when it's only you that feels that Mass Effect is not an RPG.

So its an RPG because you level up and choose dialog? What a sad state of affairs the gaming world is in...I guess you could make a racing game that you level up in and people would call that an RPG It's almost as if people are defending calling things RPGs that really aren't so that they can TOTALLY DILUTE the genre and erase it while still calling games and RPG. I guess it's an excuse to do away with traditional JRPGs...We really have to be careful or all we will have left are COD clones with a leveling system...
