New iPhone 4G coming to Verizon Wireless in 2010?

Quickpwn: According to Digitimes, OmniVision, the supplier of the 3.2 megapixel camera for the current iPhone 3G/iPhone 3GS has secured 5-megapixel camera orders for the iPhone 4G . The iPhone 4th generation will launch in the second half of 2010. It will also contain a CDMA chip that allows it to be used on the Verizon Wireless network, if the rumors are true.

I think this is just a rumor. Has anyone seen the ads about using the web while talking on the phone with iPhone? That's not possible on the Verizon network. Why would Apple push that 'feature' so hard only to release the iPhone onto an older, gimped network later? It doesn't make sense.

On the other hand, however, I hope that they DO release on Verizon. I'm a certified iPhone developer, and having the extra customer pool would be welcomed, indeed.

And, finally, it shouldn't be called the iPhone 4G unless it's going to use 4G data services. The iPhone 3G wasn't called '3G' because it was 3rd generation, but because it was the first iteration to use 3G data.

Yeah it's such a "feature". "Hey man can you hold on I'm going to browse the internet really quickly." Apple and AT&T will use ANY miniscule feature they can find to downplay Verizons obviously superior network. Gimped? Haha! Have fun in New York and San Francisco with your Iphone 3G, lemme know how that faster internet works out for you. I love my droid anyways.

I have the iPhone too and never in my life has AT&T provided me with anything other than subpar service. I would switch immediately.

I have the Motorola Droid and have been very pleased with it. The screen is a gorgeous 854x480 TFT LCD making it 2.6x higher than the iPhone 3GS' 480x320 screen. This makes web browsing very nice, and Flash Player 10.1 is arriving sometime in the first half of 2010 for the Android web browser.

As far as the hardware specs go, it's the same Arm Cortex-A8 that is in the iPhone 3GS and the same PowerVR GPU with 256MB of RAM just like the iPhone 3GS.

Google Android 2.01 is pretty awesome and some of the android exclusive apps from Google like Goggles and Skymap are pretty great as well. Google Navigation is also a very nice piece of free GPS software.

With that said, I'd probably wait for the HTC Passion for Verizon customers as it sports a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU so it should be be even faster than the already pretty fast Motorola Droid. Also the WVGA AMOLED screen should be even more beautiful.

Hopefully this means that AT&T's exclusive deal with Apple is over, and other carriers (like T-Mobile) will finally "officially" get the iPhone.

I had AT&T service for a few years and had a good experience with their network, but their price is what caused me to switch away from them. I had a single line of service with a smartphone (Nokia E71x), and it was running me about $120/mo. for 900 anytime minutes, unlimited messaging, and unlimited data.

Anything that could possibly lead to AT&T being more reasonable on their service pricing (like their cash cow, the iPhone, going to other networks as well) is very welcome in my book...

LOL. Verizon expanded their coverage by buying out Altell and simply taking over their towers. At the same time, significantly raising their prices. Their phones are still the worst in the bunch, coverage was average before, and now support is getting just as crappy as Sprint's. With that said, NEVER had a problem with AT&T and couldn't be any happier with the service. Sure, AT&T could use more coverage but the iPhone alone makes going with AT&T all the more worth it.

The iPhone is the only phone I would switch carriers for. I came to Verizon for the 3G iPhone. And I would go back to Verizon for the 4G iPhone. During my 5 or so years with Verizon it was definitely apparent they had the better service over AT&T.

It does not have everything, it lacks basic functions out of the box like Bluetooth for example.
Yes you can live with out them but you expect certain functions available on a smart phone for that price tag.
With that said I think the iPhone is a pretty decent phone none the less.

The design and the hard to scratch touch screen and casing makes it my favorite phone, and the safari web browser is the best i've used on a mobile phone so far. Also, its really not lacking in features. I like the OS on there, and everything just is so well thought out.

@inveni0...I have an iPhone 3GS. My girlfriend has a Droid. While the droid isn't quite as fluid graphically as the iPhone, it dominates my iPhone in features and openness. The lack of background running apps is a VERY big deal. Why can I not browse the web and listen to Pandora at the same time? Hardware wise-the Droid and iPhone are very similar with Droid having a slight edge (as it should, it's newer). While I have my phone jailbroken and running background tasks, it's annoying and frustrating that I have to do that for something that is standard on most any smartphone. Sure the apps are awesome on the iPhone, but her Droid has an app that does about everything my iPhone can do (except higher quality games where iPhone dominates). Anyway, I love my iPhone, but her Droid has better coverage (VZW) and a much nicer screen resolution. Unless Apple blows my mind with their next iPhone release, I will probably migrate over to the Android OS.

YES! A resounding yes it's THAT much better. It's lightning quick, has good apps, internet is very quick. It's RELIABLE, doesn't freezr or screw up, your not pulling the batter every few minutes. Now if your paying full price that not be worth it, cause that's A LOT.

Verizon was originally offered the I phone contract, but turned it down. They refused to give into Apples demands on the $ amount. AT&T at the time needed to compete with Verizon so they took the contract.

I'm not from the US but as I understand Verizon is CDMA. Apple would have been really dumb if they released a CDMA only phone. That would mean that they could sell it only in North America and nowhere else. So I highly doubt that what you are saying is true.

thats cool that that's your opinion, but after working with my info.tech. teacher and other tech wizards i've learnt its a matter of what you use the tool for, that is after all what a Mac and a PC is.

I work in design (graphical for the most part) so to me, Macs are and always will be superior to a PC, no matter what, but thats me.

If you're a software dev. or even a game dev for example, or work with 3D graphics, then maybe a PC is best for you

However, i know many 3D companies that use Mac Pro's , simply because of how reliable they are.

In Hollywood, EVERYTHING is taken care of on Mac Pro's, simply because it far more reliable than a Windows PC

It's a matter of work area, and opinion.

Why did i end up getting a macbook pro? Well first of all at my new job there were about 10 macs...and well, 1 pc. My assigned computer was a 20" imac and well, i had no choice but to get uses to it. Long story short, i ended up loving everything about it. Truth is, it just works. Everything, just fits and works perfectly.

well about 3 month later, i decided i needed a new laptop...i wanted something small and lightweight yet powerfull enough to do everything from normal computer stuff to gaming...

i challenge you to find a laptop, with the same features, weight and design as the macbook pro 13" with better pricing and as stable as mac osx...

Ya - this all just sounds like speculation. The actual technical details don't add up in a definitive way.

I could see Apple opening up the phone to all carriers this year at WWDC - but never outright switching carriers or offering a better product on Verizon, etc. without making the same updates on the AT&T phones as well.

Though, Apple has always been very careful when it comes to their products - offering it up to several carriers opens up the possibility for a greater number of problems.

What I was trying to say is: with 4G only being talked about appearing next year, I'd be surprised if Apple put out a new device, with new cell tech, on an untested newly implemented network. If it didn't work as planned Apple would look bad - and they've learned that lesson through a number of problems on AT&T's end.

one benefit for me with the iphone is at least with apple you know they will offer updates that will actually improve the phone, thats the only thing i have against the androids as of now, your phone carrier might not allow you to update to the latest android OS, some HTC's have 2.0 and some are still stuck on 1.5 and below and when that happens that means your stuck with those features.

Verizon would have to not cripple it. They don't like selling phones they can't control.The droid..they crippled the tftp over bluetooth so you can't put ringtones and stuff on it without paying them. they cripple it so you can't easily modify your phone, not unless you use their service which you pay extra for. When Verizone launches their LTE(4G) network, they won't have to worry about doing one thing at a time, because voice and data will be possible. The ad campaign running right now is more of an at&t thing than an iPhone thing. They had to say something because Verizon isn't lying about the 3G coverage.

hard core verizonbguy a year ago and I went
to AT&T for the iPhone, and let me tell you guys that
I haven't had any problems at all!! No drop calls
lack of coverage etc.. In fact, I never realized that AT&T
is cheaper!! For that same unlimited data plan
with crappy phones(2 lines) verizon was costing me 165
a month.. It's 133 with AT&T..!! And nobody that I know
on AT&T ever has Amy problems..
