Intel's V8 platform reviewed: are 8-cores for you?

The idea of running your rig with 8-cores working their magic has already been available in various forms, but Intel is apparently hoping to effectively fire back at AMD's Quad FX with the unveiling of the V8 platform. Reviewers found that flexing the muscles of twin Xeon processors provided speed that was simply unparalleled in several testing scenarios, but for common jobs such as 3D gaming and unzipping gigabytes of data, the setup essentially fell flat on its face. Sure, blasting past competition in SiSoft Sandra XI and POV-Ray 3.7 is admirable, but unless you're looking to whisk away your day crunching AutoCAD and 3D Studio Max (read: working), this V8 isn't likely to be worth the investment. Notably, the reviewers were flabbergasted by the peaks and valleys in performance depending on what application was being critiqued, so be sure and hit the read link for the full skinny if you've got this one tabled on your must-have list.

need to release what requirements are needed for top settings, that way i can waste probley another 7000 on a new computer

kewlkat0076203d ago

As far as Applications, were just not there yet. Great number cruncher tho..This would be useless for games and such if someone was to own.

oh look something more powerful then Cell, where are those people who said it was futureproof

DJ6203d ago (Edited 6203d ago )

Intel's 8-core processor falls flat on its face when running real applications; it's obvious that x86 architecture needs to be scrapped if AMD or Intel expect to compete with the Cell Broadband Engine, let alone its future successors. With Cell, a 3-year old processor, running 22x faster than the fastest new Xeon processor, you know STI (sony/toshiba/IBM) did something right.

next gen processors require next gen programmers.

if only xbots would realize this simple truth they wouldn't look so ignorant.

kevin6202d ago (Edited 6202d ago )

man it really matters not if the thing has cores but the cell is made up of processors, which means it can render graphics that look even better than this

Silvia0076202d ago

Is it just me or is that just nasty... anyway, cell is a nice processor, I'd prefer the cell in my computer then two quads.

Is it running the same Windows OS? Because that is the biggest issue with the current Ally.

Honestly, I really like this updated version. But it doesn't solve the biggest flaw that the original had for me: the Z1 Extreme APU. Yes, it's an extremely powerful part, but it is not part of AMD's Adrenalin driver update program, so it's dependent on Asus for driver updates. And unfortunately, Asus doesn't have a stellar record of support for their devices.

Goodguy0115d ago

Up to 8 hours basically just means the least demanding games. AAA gaming at highest wattage would probably be about 2-3 hours which is good compared to just about 1 hour with the current ally. The OLED Deck can do about 2-3hrs.

mrcatastropheAF13d ago

With much less performance so that makes sense.

The Steamdeck shines at the lower TDP end but gets absolutely mopped at the high end.

Similar longevity with much better performance is a big win for the Ally X

Too bad Asus are all awful company.

PRIMORDUS13d ago

They used to be the best when it comes to motherboards, now I will never buy anything from them again.

Firebird36014d ago

8 hrs yea right. Running tetris?

Skuletor13d ago

Only after setting the screen brightness to the lowest level, of course.

Notellin13d ago

They tested the battery life watching a game of Tetris in 360p. Running Tetris natively brought the number down slightly to 1 hour and 38 minutes. 😂

Asuka14d ago

Nope. The only improvements I want to hear is better customer support. Otherwise, I can't be bothered.
