Movie studios will decide PS3's fate- Pachter

Gaming analyst Michael Pachter has said in his annual industry report that he expects "the ultimate outcome of the console wars to be decided by the motion picture studios. Should the studios embrace Sony's Blu-ray standard for high definition DVDs, we think Sony will gain an insurmountable advantage over Microsoft; should the studios embrace Sony rival Toshiba's HD-DVD format, we think that Microsoft can maintain its first mover advantage and will dominate software sales for years to come."

Wait to be seen, how these formats are conceived. I know some people already think its over.

-Will the Trojan/Rootkit of a Blue-Ray backfire?
-Will Toshiba give up?

One thing for sure, if consumers start adopting more stand alone HD players then HD-DVD will get more support from Movie Makers. Right now Sony's Ps3 is the cheapest player, bu still an expensive console.

So why would the mainstream Gamers purchase a PS3? Movies or games? yada yada yada, I know some for both.

Does having a PS3, mean your a movie buff, and will go out and buy the more expensive format and totally erase your hard-earned 8 years or so DVD Collection? Probably not. Will it still help SONY yes.

If you go out and purchase a Stand Alone HD player, then we know your purchase is directly related to Movies, and you'll probably buy titles.

I don't care so much for the numbers now, will wait to watch this thing play out. Big money at stake for both Toshiba and Sony.(Well a lot more at stake for Sony)

If blu-ray fails does that mean PS3 will fail -> i don't think so

So every now and then, an "analyst" who has no shred of clue about gaming has to philosophise about the console wars' fate.

This format war wont decide the fate of the PS3... these analysts are mixing up two completely different things. That is, if blu-ray fails that doesnt mean that the PS3 will. However, if the PS3 becomes a hit, I think the amount of players out there will determine the format war. I think at this moment in time the PS3 is determining the format war, not the other way around. If you don't believe me look at the sale figures for blu-ray after the launch of the PS3.

but I do think there is a kernel of truth to what is said above. I don't see Sony ever bridging the nearly 8 million system install base gap *unless* Blu-ray does become the standard format and they keep the price of the PS3 the same as or lower than the cheapest blu-ray players. That is no guarantee they would bridge the gap, I just think that is their only chance. If they did that it is feasible that a couple years from now when HD really takes off and is a standard platform *50% adoption or higher* their system could really start to sell as a single media box for internet, movies, games, etc.

It's not that games will or that hollywood will. It's BOTH. There is a correlation.

The Ps3 could do extremely well just with great games and timely price drops. After all, Blu-ray technology will come down in price, regardless if it wins the format war or not.

If great games come out for PS3, people will buy it, and a fraction of those will buy blu-ray movies.

If the format wars are settled and Blu-ray wins, then more people will buy a PS3. A fraction of those will buy games too.

So Pachter is partly right. If Blu-ray wins, a lot of people will buy a PS3, regardless of how many games it has. But if a lot of people buy it, then you can be sure its number of games will rise, whether former exclusives get ported, or the number of exclusives will rais.

But Pachter is also partly wrong. If PS3 gets a lot of games, it will be succesful. The format wars could end differently, in a tie (no format ever picking up), or in a loss for blu-ray. Still, the more games the PS3 has, the more it will sell, and that can't be bad news for blu-ray.
