Xbox 360 Elite in white package in the wild, Pro SKU missing on back-of-box chart

Can't say we're all that surprised given other sightings, but one anonymous tipster has sent us pics from a local Walmart of the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite in a shiny white package with a back-of-box chart that neglects to mention the Pro models, essentially striking it from the records. It's still scanning at $399 for now, but having seen other retailers print flyers quoting $299, the computers very well may be updating just after some official Microsoft announcement, which wouldn't surprise us at all if it happen sometime this week, just ahead of the PS3 Slim launch. Console companies that are competent like Nintendo and Sony have long term plans for dropping the manufacturing costs so that when they hit their price drops over the years they continue to be profitable.

Even worse for Microsoft is the fact that they are selling the cheapest and worst console ever created. Outdated DVD, a motherboard that looks like something you would build from RadioShack parts, no internal power supply, primitive cooling system, etc.

Mind boggling that Microsoft is so incompetent that a piece of junk like the $200 Xbox 360 with no harddrive or WiFi caused the entire E&D division to plunge into loss when they are bilking Xbox owners out of 100s of million in online fees and other profitable products in E&D like the Mac software unit, mobile phone software, etc.

Weaker hardware

Something is terribly wrong if Microsoft has to charge so much money. The old DVD drive alone should make the 360 cheaper than the PS3 alone. Then the Wifi and the 360 should easily be 100 bucks less than the PS3. And then if you move on to the poor quality components and design one would think the 360 shouldn't be any more than 100-150 bucks for what they are offering.

Microsoft has been profitable in their games division for a few years now. The Entertainment and Devices Division houses quite a few products. Devices like the Zune haven't been as successful as the Xbox 360. Even at $199 and $299 the Xbox 360 hardware is making a profit along with the money made with software and services. A $299 Xbox 360 isn't something new, the Pro which is identical hardwarewise has been $299 for the last year. The ELite is the same exact thing with a larger HDD. Surely you don't think Microsoft loses money on the HDD do you?

The PS3 has been losing money since day one on hardware. $299 is a great price for fans and new customers, but isn't doing much for Sony's bottom line. The gamble Sony is making is that new console sales will also bring in enough software sales to justify the loss on hardware. This move is intended to jumpstart the Playstation brand in a very big way. If that doesn't happen it will show on their next quarterly financial statement.

If you read the statement you will see the Entertainment and Devices Division showed a (loss) for the last quarter for both fiscal years, but showed a profit for the entire fiscal year 2008 and 2009.

Fiscal 2007 was ugly due to the 1 billion warranty extension which crippled the EDD for the year. Fiscal 2006 and 2007 seen the charges for both the Zune and Xbox 360 launches.

Fiscal 2007 shows a loss of 5,193,000,000 (five billion, 193 million)

Disagreed. After 6 months out in Europe the PS3 dropped to 400 Euro. Thats a sign of desperation. The 360 did't drop the price as soon as that.
And then again

The PS3 isn't out for 3 years yet, though it went from 600 bucks to 300 bucks.
The 360 is close to 4 years out and it went from 400 Euro to 239 Euro (Pro model) overhere. It went from 449 to 279 (Elite) and 299 to 179 (Arcade).

So the PS3 dropped within no time and it dropped the fastest out of the two competitors. Confirmed. Sony's first year wasn't strategy at all. It was desperation confirmed. Even to today its desperation. They're 8 to 10 mln. behind. PS3 Slim buyers are beta testers.

Fact is, >>IF<< bluray had turn out to be a significant selling point as sony predicted then it would remain more expensive than the 360 and STILL outsell 360(like they predicted), but it hasn't and thus sony has basicly been FORCED by the better sales of their competition to lower the price to the equal the price of 360, which means they have to eat all the extra cost of bluray. Unfortunately for sony micro loses less money on each console sold so therefore they could ultimately always sell 360 at a lower price point and lose LESS money on each console sold if they so choose.

No, i think they've reduced the cost for a few reasons.

1) Bluray was a new technology. Always going to come down more/quicker over a three year period than say DVD (which is older and has largely levelled).

2) They've considerably redesigned/refined the contents of the 60gig first up console (the one that was the $600 you refer to) to make it much cheaper to produce (leaving out/switching many parts as a trade off).

3) There's this little thing called 'the global recession' which kinda makes it hard to be the most expensive kid on the block - although they still will be as an entry price; just not ridiculously so now (further MS Arcade cuts notwithstanding.)

4) Much of the media hype/mindshare has been directed to the Wii this gen.

and...

5) Microsoft engaged in a price war (on the back of falling behind month to month at near to par prices) just on a year ago which Sony has been long overdue to respond to. What Microsoft will do will depend on how well they think they can compete like-for-like on price, and whether they decide - like they did this time last year - the results aren't going to too good for them without a significant price advantage to leverage against the Playstation branding and PS3 feature set. It will also partly depend on if they've done any behind the scenes cost reductions since their last cuts, or if any price reduction will simply be cutting into their profits/expanding their losses.

Sure, that's a part of it. Not looking for a 'way around it' either. Just filling in the bits your leaving out. Namely their ability to reduce prices is dependent on their ability to get their own prices down (it's just common sense), and the sales of the market overall are dependent on a huge number of swing factors ( eg. 'worst global recession in 80 years'), as they are every generation.

Also this price cut comes 'in response' to being 'outsold', yes, but also in response to their competition - or at least the XBox - reducing the price of their console on the back of 'themselves' being outsold for a string of time last year (after the PS3's restructuring to be nearer to the at the time market average).

Well, in Australia at least the Wii opened at $399 and has stayed there. The PS3 opened at $999; was redesigned/relaunched at $699, and this new model (which includes further cost savings) is $499. The Wii has always had a significant price advantage versus the PS3 in this country - which has made it less susceptible to external factors such as the recession; though i grant you the Wii (as i said) has managed a huge amount of 'mindshare/press' this time round which mitigates a hell of a lot.

Look, i've got no disagreement with what you've said; more, again, with what you've left out. Of course Sony would love to charge $10,000 for the PS3. Of course, Nintendo would love to charge the same for the Wii in 2012 that they charge now and rack up the same numbers per month (which is unlikely; i'd say they'll cut price very soon with their own downturn), and (brace yourself) of course Microsoft would like not to have had to have cut their prices so heavily late last year and possibly be looking at doing it again same time this year.

I just think you've gotta be careful reducing it to 'was selling for 600, now selling for 300' type headers. It's not the same thing at half price - it's a new model significantly cheaper to create - and even if it was, it would have incurred (strategically) likely 'some' cut in the intervening three years (being priced at entry to lure 'early adaptors' far more brazenly than the cheaper Wii/Xbox were)

You can use any bluetooth headset, keyboard, mouse, anything bluetooth will connect to the PS3...within reason.

Also the controllers have built in lithium ion batteries, like in the iphone. I have a almost 3 year old controller and it still charges and works. You have to buy batteries for the xbox 360 and Wii.

Apple uses built in batteries and so does Sony.

Also the PS3 has HDMI 1.3a...which allows deep color output....The Xbox 360 does not offer this.

Like many have said, customers aren't waiting for a 360 price cut. The thing is already 199. Customers are, however, waiting for a PS3 price cut.

Oh, and xbox live isn't free. Sure silver is, but the main feature is online gaming for which you have to pay.

The people that originally bought a PS3 knew what they were buying on day 1, didn't care about the price and knew that the playstation brand stood for quality and 10 yr support of the console. These people generally knew what they wanted and have not migrated to the 360. They have stuck loyally by the PS3 because, after all, it is the best hardware quality gaming console built to date.

The people that originally bought a 360, probably bought the original XBOX. They also knew that Microsoft dropped support for that original XBOX very early into the console's cycle. But...it was a very solidly built machine. These same people probably hated Sony or the PS2 for whatever reason or just wanted to have something that was new and different than the PS2. The funny thing is that these people seemingly hated the PS2, PS3 and Sony, but are now suddenly migrating to the PS3. You are starting to see more and more 360 owners admitting that they own a PS3 as well or are planning on owning one in the very near future due to the price drop.

Now...these are the same people who used to shun the PS3 for whatever phony made up reasons---"it has no good games"---"It has crappy free online"---I don't want a bluray machine that also plays games"---"I don't like the controller"---"It looks ugly or I don't like the color and the shape of it"---HD-DVD is soooo much better than Bluray(obviously not)---I could go on and on....

The truth of it is that you will now see more and more 360 owners going out and buying PS3's as well and you won't see people that bought PS3's first, EVER going out and purchasing 360's. People that buy the PS3, knew what they wanted and choose wisely to stick with the PS3. You couldn't ever talk them into buying a 360 as well.

People that don't own a nextgen Hi-def console will easily choose the PS3 slim over the 360. The 360 is the beginning of the end for Microsoft in the console business.
They really f--ked up bigtime with consumers. Most everybody has heard of the 360 failure rates, while the Playstation brand is just as strong as ever because of a strict 10 yr long term strategy that is just starting to take over. The PS3 is evolving so much more rapidly than the 360 is capable of. Microsoft never had a long term strategy, which is why they are now trying to copy the Wii and focus on the casual gamer market. That is their REAL strategy going forward. Beat the Wii and let Sony rule the next gen. It is clearly starting to happen.

Microsoft should go the route of Sega and just make software and games for the PS3, the Wii, and pc, and get out of the console business altogether. They have no strategy for growth of the current version of the 360,and there is nothing left to play on it but Halo(zzzz)and extremely compressed multiple disc versions of 3rd party multiplatform games, and the Natal thing is truly another get rich quick gimmick, without any real strategic thought behind it.

Another reason why they are trying to go casual all of a sudden is that they are losing pace quickly to the obvious growth and evolution of the 10yr PS3. It's sad really. No. Not really. They reap what they sow for knowingly pushing faulty hardware onto the market. This is an American company intentionally screwing over American consumers. Their hard drive prices were set by design. They knew you would need bigger hard drives and they would profit from it. They also understood that these constant hardware failures would force some consumers who bought a lot of games, to go out and buy another 360, even though they had a warranty.

They deserve nothing but failure and loss of market share. The devils.

This is what they should do...they should exit the console business and start a whole new renewed focus on gaming software for ALL platforms and they really should do it soon.
