Slow! That's an understatement...two operating systems running here, with little ram and no access to RSX.

Forget about it! Just stick with Linux or hope Sony will open up the RSX for Linux for 3D. Better still, petition Sony to develop its own sleek, fast and optimized version of Linux - Sony Linux OS - and have it preinstalled. Then you'll have a PC as well as a game console. Oh, the $$$$ you would save.

There's no way Sony will ever allow Winblow$ on PS3 nor will Micro$oft port XP/Vista to its competitor's machine.

fulconer, i just watched the video you put up and honestly other then a proof of concept there is no actual real purpose for it. You computer can do the samething and do it more efficently running windows natively with much more ram. Atleast with vista you can use ready boast, something I hope microsoft impliments for the xbox 360 for xna developers to use.

Ps3 is a PC Console(games, internet, media center, productivity) when it has a full OS(such as Linux, XP, Mac OsX) installed on it.

Sony will never be able to get XP/Vista ported and unlikely to convince Apple to do the same with Mac OsX. So we just have Linux at the moment. However, Linux has never had major capital investment - like Apple and M$ have done - to produce a sleek, fast, optimized, user-friendly distribution of Linux.

At the moment Sony is allow buyers to install Linux for themselves but Sony should be developing its own version(Sony Linux OS) and preinstalling it so that its ready to go when you get your Ps3. You then immediately have access to thousands of free opensource software(Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, The Gimp, Inkscape, Scribus, NVU, Audacity, VLC, MythTV, Blender etc) - for free. Yes, that's free.

This is what is happening on Laptops and PCs already with us Linux fans and what is already happening on the Ps3. You won't see linux on xbox 360 nor Vista because M$ will lose revenue.

Sony on the other hand still gets revenue from GameOS on the Ps3 and allows buyer to turn it into a PC Console. But it should be a PC Console when we take it off the shelf with Sony Linux OS already installed....

Maybe Halo 1 but I doubt it would run at all since the system has 256MB avaible to resourse and that includes running linuix which takes some ram and then running Windows XP which takes the majority of the 256MB and this leaves very little for the game to use and also RSX can be accessed under linuix mode so its up to the cell to do all the emulation so ya, maybe but the framerate is going to suffer, not to mention you need direct X 9 which the cell isnt'

Who are you exactly "Laughing your ass off at"? The PS3 is nowhere near powerful to emulate Windows XP AND modern PC games. Keep in mind the PS3 only has 256mb of memory. Furthermore, any PC game would have to run in software mode because (currently) nobody can get access to the RSX chip.
The only thing that this mod would be good for (game wise) would be for M.A.M.E. or low-level emulators.

Remember Sony is still losing their teeth (at least $180) on each PS3 sold, and they don't want anyone buying their system just to use it for a half-ass, crippled, Windows XP computer.

+ as far as i know, linux can`t access RSX video memory(drivers from nvidia needed), so only 256MB for linux+winXp.

if winxp woud be adopted for ps3, it would run pretty fast, but games not, becase on winXP games eat a lot of memory, while on console 512MB can be like 2GB. =)

people say the PS3 only has 256MB RAM. It's got the full 512... seriously, look it up. 256 of GDDR3 and 256 of XDR, which is much much faster than anything you have in your PC or 360. As for XP running on the PS3... sure, but not very well. I had it run on mine through an emu in Ubuntu. It was sh!t. Until we see a working Octoplier, normal x86 code will run like crap on the Cell.

It can use all of it at the same time, its 512 Megs, the thing is, it can only use 256 for the CPU, and 256 for the GPU (in fact one of the two can access the other's RAM, but I'm not sure which). The difference is that the Xbox 360 can use it any way it wants. What that means is that Xbox 360 would be ideal for PC game developers, but for console games it simply means it's easier to develop for, not more powerful. If you optimize everything to run great on PS3, you'll squeeze more power than you can from 360, the thing is, it's a lot harder, since RAM is split, and shader pipelines are split too.

Xbox 360 would own PS3 if they were Gaming PCs. But they are not. Console games take specific advantage of each platform's strengths because specs never change, so PS3 running at its optimum performace beats Xbox 360. But that's why some games look better on 360, because some developers don't want to take the time and money to optimize for the PS3.

Exclusives will make the PS3 shine.

Keep in mind that the split memory architecture of the PS3 is JUST LIKE the way it is with a PC that has a dedicated video card... Your system RAM and video RAM are separate. Now, data can be exchanged between the RAM banks across the interconnect (whether PCI, AGP, PCI-X, or PCI Express), but extra latency is added from going across the bus.

The way the 360 is setup is more like a PC with built-in video. The video chipset uses part of the system RAM for the video/texture RAM. So in essence all you have to do to move data from system RAM into video RAM is move it into a memory location that is allocated to the video chipset... No bus'es involved, very little if any latency.

Now as far as which is better? It's hard to say... The 360 uses 700 Mhz GDDR3 RAM for both, while the PS3 uses 700 Mhz GDDR3 for the video RAM and 3.2 Ghz XDR RAM for the system memory. Both will have their strengths and weaknesses, only time will tell.

shadow you say you dont even have a 360? so how do you know these games look as good or better. you mentioned armored core 4 in your post, well let me tell you, I downloaded both demos of the games an I can say from MY own experience that the 360 version looks slightly better.the reason why, it looks more sharper, more crisp an clean with alittle more detail. keep in mind that the PS3 is running through HDMI in 1080i an my 360 in run through component at 1080i. now the comparison video that was on this site a few months ago, I can say that the colors dont look like that.ones not real dark an one real light. they both has ALMOST the same color levels.

they way I see it, the majority of cross platform games get delayed on the Ps3 because it takes more work an time to get THE SAME out of the Ps3 as it does the 360, because they have to work around the memory limitations. why else would a game be delayed 4-6 months on the Ps3 an still look no better or even less even with the added time!!

you missed my point.if ps3 has half the memory as you say,you could not make games that look as good or a little better than 360.no amount of work done,1 year,2 years,it would be impossible to make a game like oblivion a little better because of lack of memory.they would look worse on ps3.all of the games.

i didn't say games look better on ps3.i said they look as good.i also didn't say genji2 was great.it had poor camera angles(i agree),shallow gameplay,didn't lead you where to go next.basically it was a letdown after genji 1.if i were sony,i would not have published it.but game republic needed someone to help them.

games like genji 2,untold legends and the rest that were rushed won't happen as much in the future because sony can see the pot of gold.resistance sold over a million.motorstorm is on it's way and was the best seller last month.

but what i'm saying is that you can't stuff the same amount of textures onscreen for ps3 compared to 360 if it had half the memory.

You ask for "proof" that the XDR RAM is faster than anything in your PC or XBox (which I RESPECT by the way, I'm not blind), just look at the clock speed. 3.2 GHz compares to the standard 700MHz of VRAM. The higher clock speed allows for more operations per cycle. And I think I'll just throw it out there, the AI in Heavenly Sword doesn't even access the system RAM at all... it's all done with the memory allocated to one SPU of the Cell... so if you wanna talk semantics, add all of the memory allocated to the SPUs to the 512 built into the system.
