Sony:don't compare ps3 home to Second Life

Nobody's gotten a statement from Sony yet about Atari's secret project which appears to be direct competition to PS3 Home.

Steve Boxer recently spoke with Sony's Phil Harrison about PS3 Home and asked about the basic similarities with Second Life. Phil Harrison wasn't having any of it.

Why not do both Zonetrooper...? Remember this is an outside company designing HOME with Sony...Sony have the biggest development community for a console..they have a hell of a lot in production and lots of other innovations to come this year (wait til E3) plus all the games in production (more than we have seen) AND they have Home which could be advantagous as they also improve the PSNetwork....

Well i compare it to Habbo Hotel and the Sims online mixed together, its not original and yeh it may be coming to the console but i still doubt Home. I would love for Sony to show realy games like Heavenly Sword, Killzone 2, Lair, Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2: Rise of Man etc etc. I would also like Sony to focus on bringing more content to the PSN Store, I do see this as a gimmick which if it does work then great.

Am sure if this was on the 360 dash board xbox fans(the xtreme fanboys) will be so happy, but too bad its coming for the ps3. So you can chat, post stupid comments or even bring out iptv(got to say that app. is great)but by the end of the day ill be playing wonderful games like LBP and you cant do nothing about it.

I'm sort of a 360 fanboy. (Not as bad as most, but for the sake of argument I'll be one.)

I would hate this. I like my interface with LIVE to be non-obtrusive, only there when I call it up. I'd rather not have a graphical representation to take up processor space and memory when the list works just great on it's own.

I can use ANY game as a 'lobby' and voice chat over any of them as well. I can tell them about my achievements and direct them to the appropriate section to view them, without interrupting my game. I can also video chat if I seriously need to have a visual representation of the other people. Or I can just boot up one of several multiplayer games and talk to them in game.

Home looks neat, but it's far from being a threat to ANYTHING on the Live front. As it is, it's pretty much glorified Mii's on a visual Friends list. Not innovative in the slightest.

IT will be a great place for all us to meet up and talk..like a n4g room would be amazing..where we can meet up and talk and play eeach other in games...I jsut cant w8 till socom four ..even if people arent that good playing with people is fun and making new friends is always a plus.(espically gamers) So see u guys on home and probably on the killzone battlefeild..

Obviously it's a flame bait. But do you mind explaining how is that? XBox live is the first successful online service as far as console's are concern. It introduce gamer tags, achivements, game invites, etc. You can hate microsoft all you want, but Sony or Nintendo would hardly be talking about online service if there wouldn't be any online service to compete with.

"it's more original than XLive ;-)" also, you may want to wait until the service is released before making an intelligent comparison between the services and tryinging it before blindly following some marketting PR.

Home is pretty much a copy of sims/second life no matter what sony say.

The important question to ask is "Does this enhance my game playing?"

If i've got to wander around some 3d environment to find someone to play a game with, then its rubbish. When I stick a game in a console I want to play it, not jump through several hoops to play it.

I think with need to stop with the "they copied... and they are not innovative" who cares... if home turns out to be fun.. that's all that matters. I personally don't see myself walking around in this virtual world, which is why I never played the sims; but I am sure there are people that love it. So, if Sony is trying to do something aimed at certain group then it can only be good. At least sony is trying to do something. Who knows there may be some details that we don't know that may interest many of us to give it a shot.

Well balananced comment, I personally enjoy Both sony an msoft ( and any other co company whos hardware i buy) pushing new features as it means more for cameras like me. I will never take sides all I want is the best experience for my £ and company consistently innovating?pushing new features will give me this.

yeah, to each his own. I don't see myself either walking around and playing pool and what not, but yeah, there are people that do want to do this kind of thing. Some people also forget, that you don't actually have to go into this virtual world and walk around to get where you want to go. There is the virtual psp to jump you to where you want to go, and also there will be many things available via the XMB. And the thing that is best of all, at least for the time being, is that it is free. Available to everyone with internet access, at no cost. You like it? Good, use it to your hearts content. You don't like? well good too, don't use it at all, because hey, you didnt pay for it.

you can't sell any items in home like clothes which second life has.
you can't have kids in home.
you can't die in home like in sims

home:

adds intergrated games you can play with friends over a network.
adds matchmaking.
adds REAL content.example:companies can have real zones where you can shop for real items and have it sent to your real house.
companies could put up demos you can play of upcoming games and ask what you think while playing it.
you could theoretically have a streamed concert shown live or a movie.
you can share music,movies and pictures from your hard drive.
you can create games and share them with others with LBP.

both are 3d but are not the same.it's like saying gran turismo and need for speed are the same type of game.or battlestar galactica the series is the same as andromeda the series.uhhhhhh.....no.

All of these things can be done with a menu system, ten times quicker than in some virtual 3d world. I cannot see any advantage to this product.

I fail to see "Home" as anything more than a gimic.

Or perhaps sony are hoping that you'll spent so much time deciding what hat to wear, that you won't notice how few quality games there are.

yes, there is a menu system, its the virtual psp that will take you wherever you want to go. Also most of the home features (interconnectivity with other users) will be available via the xmb, the media bar you see when you first turn on the system. Hey if someone wants to hand out and meet other people in these lobbies, well more power to them. If you wanna play some arcade games, while trying to hit on some chic avatar ( yeah you never know whats behind that fake identity), then go for it. You wanna have some clan meetings, the do it. Many different types of users will find this option very very useful, its something else besides turning on RFOM and shooting some people online. Remeber the playstation user is a very diverse type of gamer, you only have to look as far as singstar to see the variety of games that are available. Remember folks, this feature is absolutetly FREEEEEEEEE. How can you knock something that costs you NOTHING.. it never ceases to amaze me the people that complain about things that cost them nothing. Or it could be complaints of people this feature is not even offered to them

There are MANY times that a Sony rep used the words "we HOPE to keep this service free." Don't make the assumption that Home will be free unless they find a successful advertising model that works without ruining the virtual environment. Labeling this as a free service before it is even up and running is being rather presumptuous.

I don't see why people are comparing home to XBL. they don't seem to have much to do with each other.

If I just want to sit down, and play a multiplayer match, I don't see how home is going to miraculously change that, and if I had to load up home, just to join a match, I would be extremely annoyed, so hopefully that's not the case.

they are just different services, not knocking either one, both great in their own aspect. XBL = good for games, home = good for socializing (like second life)

haha I actually think that would be a great idea, well no, im sure there are games that would do that. Yeah I agree with ya boink, the comparisons should just stop. First and foremost Home wont be available until september, and we really only have an idea with what home will offer.Live is a great feature, lets you get on gaming with your friends online. What it does, it does it very well. The think about home, is that it has so many possibilities with it, you can make it as big and crazy as you want. OR you can keep it low key and only use key features. Remember it has a virtual menu bar (virtual psp) as well as access to features via the xmb. There is a something that is better in the home arena. Cost = $0. Its free guys. I just know that I'm saving 50 bucks a year ( thats how much an eight is, what a coincidence), and thats ok in my book.

First of all phil harrison shouldn't keep justifying it. I don't know how it isn't similar to second life or the sims. If there are differences aside form a different way to play others online please tell me.

Don't get me wrong its not a bad thing, i think, but lets not call it revolutionary. When i get my PS3, i probably won't be that interested in PS home. I just want to play games. That could also be the fact that im farily social, and if i want to talk to people ill just go do something.

But still there seems to be some questions i have. How big is PS home going to be, is it going to be a massive world, or just a gigantic room? Are there like neighborhoods of players in this world, if the PS Home is a massive world, how easy is it to travel from place to place(to meet other people)? How much advertising am i going to see? etc.

And I'm not trying to hate, but i think those are fair questions.

But who knows, this could be kinda cool, but from what im hearing, it not my cup of tea so far.

Home has more to do with a sci-fi book from a while back then to The Sims or Second Life (both which are derived from the same idea). I don't see home as a 'ripoff' or 'carbon copy' of these ideas since it's really a unique amalgamation of ideas that define the internet right now.
