This confirms some points I have been trying to make. Dev. need to make the CASH back. We need to buy the consoles to make their plan to make money back make since. If your user base is too small to support the budget of the game they are almost forced into going multi platform.

The article says Sony needs to sell 5 million consoles in the U.S. buy Nov. for publishers and developers to see a market that support the budget for the titles they are putting together. Sounds strait up to me.

You dont realize the real truth,the real truth is that if microsoft would have never created a next-gen console neither would have sony because sony was doing super well with the ps2 so why would they want to kill their cashcow. As a matter of fact the only real reason why new generation consoles are created in the first place is because some threat like competition arises. How about pressure from gamers to have bigger and better. Gamers get bored pretty easily...I know the ps2 would have lasted another two years...but beyond that it would die a death as gamers would not see any progress. PC graphics also move the lead for console graphics. And not forgetting the developers. If an upmarket console can be made, and developers can make better graphics...they'll want to be creative and do that...they saw the end of the ps2 really.

Gamers, Developers creativity, I think it all counts. Of course competition makes the market move a lot faster...

Also you have to realise (as I'm sure you do anyway) that if a market becomes stale then another company sees a possibility to enter and take control. This is the case with the ps1 that introduced 3d graphics on a console. The console market had become increasingly repetitive and wasn't moving very far and so Sony saw the possibilities of taking a market share.

Since this is the case the leading console maker has to stay ahead and move with the times. If they just lie on their laurels and their console generally doesn't move beyond 10 years of innovation, where technology is increasingly more powerful on a year by year basis...then a competitor will arise as if by default in order to take control. Therefore, a company will inevitably create a more powerful console in order to keep control of the market.

The ps3 would have been made even without competitors, as the prospect of competitors taking advantage is ever present. Of course the cycle would not be as swift as it is now, especially with eager beavers like Microsoft...

ps1 and ps2 was created to compete with pc gaming, those machines were always meant to target home computer game business, nintendo or sega was never a competitor to sony.
Even there was no x360 brand out, ps3 would still come out arround this time of the ps2 life cycle, because of the developing pc gaming tech.

Well indeed. But remember the reason a market goes stale is because Gamers ge bored of it and see technology improving elsewhere and not on consoles. This means the consoles no longer sell...and so the company needs to rethink and reproduce.

Consumers buy consoles...there's no competition in a market without consumers. So it's a mix of everything. But still the market would keep on moving even without competition, but just the prospect of competition.

Atari 2600 Would of dominated thus invoking no change/creativity in the gaming business because there would of been no competition, so NO Playstation in general, and all the other consoles that came out there after.

Had the P$3 and the Wii been the only consoles release game developers would be sitting in a lot of debt for their games since you couldn't port P$3 games to the wii and the wii games wouldn't appeal to the P$3 base. Competition for dollars breeds advancements and price regulation.

True, MS saved the game console world from Sony. Just like Sony saved it from Sega, Sega from Nintendo, etc. etc. Without MS entering the gaming world, consoles wouldn't have HDDs, HD display, great online play (although nod to Sega for trying it first with the Dreamcast, which Sony killed), marketplace, DLC, game updates, etc. etc. Without Sony, games would still be on cartridges. Nintendo saved the gaming industry from extinction after Atari collapsed and Sega saved Nintendo from turning into a Sony.

In all honesty, for the Sony fanboys, MS improved Sony (and vice versa). I loved the PSOne, but the PS2 was a far cry from what it could have been. Sure, it's the most successful console so far, but that's because it didn't have any competition when it launched (except Dreamcast which Sony destroyed) and rode the coat tails of the PSOne. The PS2 could have been designed with a HDD, HD display, online play, etc. etc., but it wasn't. Why? Same reason why Windows ME is one of the most pathetic OS's ever created. No competition. MS enters the game console market and what happens? Sony comes out with an add-on HDD and online play for the PS2 (although it was pretty half-hearted). Then with the PS3, Sony pushes for 1080p (causing MS to do the same), HDMI (causing MS to do the same), and Bluray (not needed for games, but hey, 2 out of 3 is not bad). With the unrivaled success of LIVE, Sony is now pushing HOME (which could be good, could be bad, but the effort is there regardless). To top it all off, the arms race between MS and Sony causes Nintendo to revisit older, but forgotten technology that 're-invents' gaming for the casual and younger gaming audience.

So, as I said, capitalism and competion are beautiful things for gamers.

I'm an american, and to be honest, he does have some valid points. Japan has always been notorious for providing an excellent product. I mean just look at their cars, the amount of problems that they incur is miniscule compared to American Cars. Its a known fact, there is no way to deny it. When you think of electronics hardware, you think of japanese products for their reliability. The American way, has always been put out a product, and make sure you have a solid back end for profit. Americans never use the best products, they always use second rate, to make sure the replacement parts market is strong, making money on the back end. p.s. for now, people don`t see very big difference between ps3 and xbox360 gaes, because it`s need some time to invsetigate Cell.

for example, original creator of Ninja Gaiden said that 1080p is not possible on PS3 or any other system, and now in NGS we got 1080p@60fps and self-shading.
And this is only the begining.
Uncharted has great animation and nice visuals, also Heavenly Sword creator said that they initialy didn`t relize how powewrfull is ps3, and when relized, they desiced not create new engine, but just add some detailes. So in future HS2 will be even better, then the first part. :)

Well, about xbox360, only Halo3 and PGR4 have some chances to raise some graphic level on xbox360, because most games use UE3.0 which you can see on PC, and won`t amaze much.

Dusk and the author of this article are merely reciting why competition from M$ is good for P$3. And the $$$ signs are there on purpose. Without reducing some of the developing cost and risk, the PS3 would be primarily a movie player and a gaming machine second. MS has helped to do that by having a user base that augments Sony's base. The same is true for MS. This is a symbiotic relationship at this point and not a cannabalistic business venture yet. So, for the all of the Fanbois, no need to be apologetic, but it is important to recognize that arguing for the demise of either actually hurts next-gen gaming on the whole. Whether you agree in theory or disagree on the merits, it still advances the rarely spouted principle that each company needs the other to bring games to market through 3rd Parties. This console is obviously not easy to program for but easy enough that every newb dev can wind up screwing up the games beyond belief.

the point is: the article is accusing sony of destorying developers when there is no real proof it has done. in particular, if fact is stronger than theory (which it should be) than the ps2 should be used as a gauge of how diverse and competitive the games industry has become thanks to the ps2 (over 3000 games from over 100 studios). the article is merely theorizing that the ps3 will kill of developers but maybe if we look further into the future than the biggest threat to developers is not sony but microsoft. legal judgements made against microsoft in anti-competitive behaviour is testament to this belief.

Are you a developer? Programmer? I am. Windows give developers more options and a better business oriented (profitable) platform where developers can make money. Why do you think so many companies/developers support Windows OS? Here is little secret: people buy an OS to run program not to run the OS. There are more developers programming for windows than any other OS. Open Source sucks! Why the @#$#$% should I distribute my code or let others do it? What makes Microsoft a monopoly? What does window have that linux or mac does not? Microsoft provides lots of great tools such as visual studio.net , .net framework, asp.net, C#, DirectX, that makes it easy for developers to create programs/games/web pages and focus on making a profit intead of killing themselves having to learn low level progamming. Yeah, microsoft is evil for making a propietary platform and not giving tools like Direct X and make them open source. Forget that, OPenGL is there and look what happen. Companies do not want to give their 100% to the open source ideology and that's why it will never work.
take IBM for example, they support Open Source, but are not willing to do it 100%. Microsoft also contribute to the Open source (i.e. C#) but people don't look at that.

Also things always take for ever when things are open source. Take protocols like SIP and H.323. To add any feature it has to go through a huge process where it has to be submitted for approval in from of a bunch of people from to a Consortium - International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC). It can (and it does) take years before crap is aproved. When a software is propietary it evolve faster and it usually react base on the customer request. Also, no one can agree with anything, which is why there are so many versions of linux.

its true that there is lots of software for windows but this is what often happens in windows/microsoft world.:

1. a developer comes up with a great piece of software
2. many people use it.
3. it becomes successful financially
4. microsoft thinks "hmmm. it's a threat"
5. microsoft eithers gives away a free competing version with it's own operating system/mircosoft creates problems for the developers by keeping the developer in the dark on changes in windows code that favours it's own version.
6. innovaive developer dies a slow death.

you might disagree with me on this but i have been around long enough to see it happen over and over again.

i think the same thing is more likely to happen with the games industry if microsoft takes control. games developers, will more likely be milked dry by ms than sony. you might not believe me but i believe in history and track record. i do believe that ms has a ruthless track record. ms is run like a cult and its ethos is never to give up until it's kill all threats/competitors. the way ms discards previous iteration of its software/hardware it just another example of how ruthless it can be inorder to make money/stiffle competition.

I have read a few articles on this site and its very anti ps3 and you cant Criticizes a console on install base thats been out for 6 months to 1 thats been out 15 months

3rd party exclusives are not as important for sony now as there business logic has now shifted away to 1st party and is not the same as ps1 & ps2

For MS and Sony 1st party titles are now very important as they have total control and gives more identity to there console

third party exclusives will become more important 2 or 3 years down the line when theres clear difference in install base

Difference 1st party games stay exclusive forever 3rd party dont bet on it

This article is true and fair. You can actually change the console names, PS3 with Xbox, and the 360 with ps2 and date the article for 2001 and this would still be a very true fact for our industry/HOBBY.

I know that it may be a hard pill to swallow for a hard core SONY gamer, but non-the less it is true.

Bill gate is good in software, but he don't know smack about making a gaming console. I don't care if Devil May Piss can go on the Xbox 360. It just shows that the maker of Devil May Piss is not capable of making the graphic so good that it can go exclusively for PS3 alone. Xbox 360 VS PS3 again. it never stops. If Sony came out today and said the 30 is better than the PS3 for gaming you guys will say it's not. If M$ said the same about the PS3 you guys will say it's not. Bottom line is buy the games you like and STFU. I wanna play Forza 2, and Killzone PS3.

Now as far as this article goes, I really don't understand what the argument is, sure you could disagree with "some" of the points made but overall I think the point he was making can't really be disputed:

no sh!t! PS3 makes 360 better, 360 makes PS3 better...the only question is which will turn out to be the best? and even then thats subjective because it depends on what you like.

How can you disagree with that? If M$ doesn't belong in the console business and the Sony or Nintendo are so much better, then the market will dictate, M$ will fail and eventually drop out....fortunately I think the market can sustain all 3 without any 1 company dominating and thus neither company has to fail....it all depends on what the mass market/consumers want.
