Video Game Warzone #44 - E3 Is Not A Competition

Torrence Davis of The Bitbag writes, "On this episode we debate heavily on whether E3 is a competition or not. Torrence suggests that a competition has a winner and a loser. If E3 has a winner, then who is the loser? Hiphopgamer suggests that E3 is a competition and compares it to a hiphop concert which Torrence also says is not a competition. Toward the end of the show all hell breaks loose when Hiphopgamer and Weapon X declare that Sony's price drop will be $100. Torrence loses it for about 20min trying to make the two understand that Sony can't afford to drop it that much and makes a bet with them.

and yes, it does have a loser. Look at last years E3 and see the universal reaction to Nintendo and it's pretty apparent that there is a loser.

There may not be an objective winner that comports to the traditional definition of what constitutes a winner, BUT the media always picks who had the best show which I guess is a winner to you.

Torrence is maybe the biggest control freak out there. He really wants to police what other sites talk about and what gamers concern themselves with.

No one is upset. We just don't agree with your statement. A statement that I personally feel was not well thought out when you consider how much attention these events get where the biggest announcements are made.

I pointed out before GTA4 and FFXIII on the 360 were two staggering announcements, that brought a lot of heat and sales to the 360 and took away from PS3.

True, these announcements could have been made anytime, anywhere. But they were made on the biggest stage for video games with all eyes on them, whipping both media and gamers into a frenzy. Sony, MS, and Nintendo fight for that heat every year, because it translates into publicity, affirmation from media/gamers that theirs is the system to primarily own, and ultimately sales.

We all talk about MS as marketing geniuses - because they always put their next big game in your face at all time. Why wouldn't game studios, console makers, etc compete for that spot light at E3? They all get to show their product, but they want people remembering their product first and foremost. And they compete for that.

If e3 wasn't a competition, there would be no best of E3 award, the big 3 would not be trying to one up each other and the FFXIII announcement wouldn't be as big as it was.

a fun thing that mags would do, by giving a grade and what not, but the whole "winner" thing is a rather new thing that has been blown up by fanboys and media, just like sales. ---->IMO<---- be kind.
