GameStop assimilates 21% of US game market

Continuing its analysis of used game monolith GameStop, Gamasutra has put together an article examining the company's revenues and how they break down. Unsurprisingly, most of GameStop's revenue comes from the United States, although an increasing share is coming from Europe, which saw a revenue increase of 67% in the last fiscal year. Undoubtedly though, the most amazing (alarming?) bit of news in the piece is that GameStop, according to Gamasutra's estimates, now controls a full 21% of the US game market.

It should be noted that Gamasutra's estimates do not include the sales of accessories or PC games, but still, day-um.

Sure, the money they give you for used game trade-ins is a rip off, but I have never traded a single game to Gamestop to this day. Most of their used games are then re-sold at rip off prices around $5 less than a brand new copy, but their prices on older games are usually more fair. For example, I love to shop for used PS2 games at Gamestop and have found many great used PS2 games in the $5-$17 range.

And with more and more developers jumping on the DLC, DD, and streaming/subscription service-based business model for gaming, I support the used game market more and more.

Developers should make games worth keeping if they don't want people to sell them to places like Gamestop after beating it once or twice. And while DLC, when done right, can be nice, it shouldn't be the industry's only strategy to stop people from buying used games.

I can guarantee if any console is 100% DD or streaming, I won't buy it. Gaming would then become nothing more than a service, an e-Arcade where you constantly pump quarters into a machine via credit card and get nothing to show for it by the time you're done playing a game.

You can't sell the game since you already used the CD key. You can't sell your account since you don't own it, you only had a mere license to play. Etc. With a hard copy of a game, I can do anything I want with it and no one can tell me otherwise.

But just like any other retail stores, you have to do some homework and distinguish the good deals from the bad. Some Gamestop "deals" are such blatant rip offs that you really have no one but yourself to blame if you fall for them. But once in a while they do have some genuinely good deals.

I used their recent promotion to get 3 used PS3 games. Buy 2 used games and get the third one free (of equal or lesser value). I didn't have GTA IV, Uncharted, or Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction yet.

At the time, Gamestop had Uncharted used for $39.99 and R&C used for $39.99. GTA IV used was priced at around $34.99, I believe. So for $80 plus tax, I got all three games. I found out later I could have bought some of these games cheaper for brand new at Blockbuster, but every Blockbuster around here was sold out on those games and only had the bad games left. So I essentially paid about $29 for each game after tax. Not bad.

I never go to Gamestop for trade ins.

They hardly ever give more than 20$ for new games.

There is a Pawn Shop in my city that takes new used games for $25 cash each.

Trading for Cash at Gamestop is a lost cause lol.

Yeah, I agree. I always sell or trade my games to friends or local people in the community via craigslist. When I had to give up my Gamecube with the 13 or so games I had, I sold it to this man who answered my ad on craigslis. I could tell he was just a dad looking for an xmas present for his kid, so I was happy to sell it to him for a pretty good price at the time. I didn't want to sell it, but I needed gas money to make the 5 hour drive home after final exams that quarter. :(

when before stores like this, if you bought a sh1tty game, you were just @ss out. I also know good & well that I wasn't the only one selling games at garage sales for way less than what you get for games now back in the Atari, NES, N64, ect days. Also, no one forces you to trade. If you were forced to do it, your b*tching would be more justified.

So before stores like Gamestop came along, I somehow wasn't able to sell or trade games with friends?

Black ops 4, because it was the last cod of duty I was able to dominate with a +2 k/d ratio. Before all the freaking cheating started to happen. It was nice catching people off guard and shooting at them first and getting the kill. Unlike now, where I shoot people first, but they gun me down with less hits, less time, literally feels like they can kill me in a split second. At times, they are able to run away after me shooting them way more than necessary, yet, the second I'm spotted, I'm dead, there's no me running away to cover. They can do cartwheels, summersaults, backflips and gun you down perfectly. They can shoot you across the map with perfect accuracy. They can jump around like morons and gun you down without even having to correct their aim. They have superman split second perfect reactions. That's the best way to describe it, everything they do is spot on perfect. They can spam and spray (no praying) their gun from far away, because they have no recoil or bullet spread. It always feels like I have to aim and also correct my aim when moving around, while these pricks don't have to do the same.

And yes, I know how to play fps games. I dominated many fps games like: Resistance 1&2, kz 2&3, Socom, MAG, Crysis, Gotham City Impostors, blitz brigade etc. all with 2-4 k/d ratio. Kz2 (lag input controls) and resistance (no aim assist in resistance) being the hardest and were the games I reached either close to a 3 k/d ratio or above.

I truly got to enjoy blacks ops 4 and got my money's worth out of it. Afterwords, I would either stop playing cod games after a while, because of the cheating, or would skip buying cod games for a year or two before buying another.

Numbers 6-9 were some of my absolute favorite early gen PS3 games. I'm still bitter about Incognito and Japan Studio.

The white knight chronicles and infamous games really need to come to modern platforms. MAG I really miss...poor zipper. The ps3 was definitely a unique console despite it being the worst home console of PlayStation.
