The SDTV Dilemma

Article investigating why game developers make games that alienate at least 10% of their potential market by making the game text completely illegible on a SDTV.

Tell them to dig deep and buy a HDTV!

evilmonkey5015557d ago

they have their own sdtv video game system though....the wii.

HBK6195557d ago

A fair amount of these 'cheapskates' are kids though, and when there is a relatively high amount of games aimed at kids(Banjo Kazooie for an example) and they have un-readable text with SDTV in their games then you can only expect that the majority of these kids aren't going to be able to read it.

You can't expect everyone to pay $500+ just so they can read text on a screen, it's the developers who need to make it legible on both SD and HD versions.

HolyOrangeCows5557d ago (Edited 5557d ago )

....how hard is it to include a 480p supported resolution along with the 720p and 1080i, and some consideration (at least with text) for those stuck between a rock and a hard place in SDTV?

However, it'd WOULD be kind of a bother for those of us WITH HD.

Some of you are over-estimating the price of HD. I'm getting a nice 19' HDTV for my room for $200.

NewZealander5556d ago

some people just havnt seen the need to upgrade yet, like my mum, she tuns 50 this year but still loves playing her 360, with any luck ill be able to get her a HDTV for christmas tho, she has no idea what shes missing out on.

It's SO HARD to play Fallout 3 on an SDTV. I have to though. I don't have 1000 bucks lying around...and I'm not gonna spend 400 on a small 720p. I'm waiting until I can afford a large 1080p.

TrenchaunT5557d ago

I'm surprised to hear that Fallout 3 is bad--I only have it on the PC, and I've always thought that most of the text was oddly oversized for the PC (same in Oblivion).

But Dead Rising was terrible...eventually I got a CRT HDTV for only $500, but before that I had a tiny <20" TV and I basically had to guess what the text in Dead Rising meant. I can understand moving toward the future, but some of the text is small even on an HDTV. Some text in Gears 2 can be difficult in 720p, until you switch to 1080i.

But at the same time, I think by the next gen they should drop SDTV support and focus on HDTV.

kingboy5557d ago

You can always get a full HD monitor(at least 24inch) for that price..i game on a samsung T240HD monitor in my bedroom for roughly 375 Bucks and it`s amazing

OOG5557d ago

yeah ive never heard of fallout having bad text

badz1495557d ago

it's not all that bad and MGS4 still looks awesome! then I bought myself a 37" Sony HDTV nearly a year after I bought my PS3. even though it's not the top of the line model, I have to admit that things are different! HDTV with HDMI connection is awesome! I even hook my PC also via HDMI to my tv and it's awesome as well but I think I need a newer graphic card because my 8600GT is not powerful enough! I'm going to buy a 1080p acer monitor sometime next month and for those who still sticking to SDTV...my advice is, it's time to upgrade, people!

rockleex5557d ago (Edited 5557d ago )

Just give us gamers the options to increase/decrease text size. ^_^

Mindboggle5557d ago (Edited 5557d ago )

It really depends on the TV, if you have an old massive glass tv then its really hard to see. But we have a newer 32" SD tv, made just before hd ready became mainstream and I can read it fine...However HD is definetly better...

I also have a 720p plasma and a 1080p plasma and the difference between the 2 is barely noticable on games, in fact there is no difference due to most games only go to 720p max. However blu ray movies look alot better in 1080p.

Alcohog5557d ago

People still have SDTV's? I don't even have a single one in my house anymore.

Finance it, brotha'!

FamilyGuy5556d ago

You wanna a decent size, 1080p and for under $1000? You should checkout ecost.com

http://www.ecost.com/detail...

killax35635556d ago

bought a 37 inch hdtv for $450 in january. the brand is Dynex (best buy generic brand) but it works great.

actually i bought it for $499 then returned it then i changed my mind and went back the next day and bought the tv i just returned as an 'open box' (10% off for open box items).

actually bought and returned something like 3 or 4 37" Dynex hdtv's until i got the one that i liked (for $450).

also, 720p is all you really need for games.

Megaton5556d ago

Um... what? I have an SDTV and Fallout 3 looks fine. There isn't a single instance of unreadable text. Burnout Paradise and Penny Arcade Adventures are an entirely different story, but Fallout 3 works in 4:3 resolution. It's not one of the titles made only in 16:9.

jackalman5557d ago

can you afford a PS3 or 360 and yet have a crappy T.V.???????

Fowack5557d ago

thats kind of a stupid question, ps3+360+hdtv+extra thing = like 2 grand. i bought my ps3 followed that up with a 360 and now i'm working on my tv. Again stupid question.

Heldrasil5557d ago

$200 - $400 investment vs. $1000+

Not hard at all to tell why. People who want HD don't want small 27" models, they want the big ones. I wouldn't drop a large amount of cash on something pricey unless it was big!

killax35635556d ago

bought my ps3 for $300 off of craiglist (even got my ps3 fixed free by Sony.... lets just say I did some 'creative editing' with some Amazon purchases i made).

37" hdtv for $450.

hdmi cable for $10

so ps3 + hdtv + cable + games = much less than $1000 (closer to $800 or $900).

kevnb5556d ago (Edited 5556d ago )

people should just buy a 32" 720p tv, it will most likely be bigger than their crt tv and can be as cheap as 400 bones. Why don't you just use a black & white tv?

Dead Rising was shocking on an SDTV. Football Manager, though, would be nigh on impossible to play.

Mariodotjpg5557d ago

times are changing, and with it, technology; people, they assume, are by this time expected to be up to date with all the latest and the greatest.

There's not much we the consumer can do about it except change. It's only inevitable.

Roger Batch5557d ago

just wanted to add that cod world at war looks brilliant on a sdtv. they obviously made the effort..

HBK6195557d ago (Edited 5557d ago )

While that's true, it doesn't mean they can't have the wording for both SDTV, I play on both an SDTV and HDTV alternatively due to my living arrangements(I do plan on getting myself a 32" 1080p LCD TV very soon for my upcoming gaming room), and due to the small wording(And even squashed graphics, I'm not talking SD graphics, they are genuinely squashed down for SD) some of the games can be shocking, the worst are usually sports games, which look fantastic and great on HDTV, but make it hard to read names/numbers on SDTV, taking away from the game.

It is simply not THAT hard to have legible text on both SDTV and HDTV versions of the game.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies37d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken37d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing6938d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker38d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6938d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt37d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken37d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Same as Shirley Curry playing Skyrim for years. In the next Elders Scrolls game they should have her in the game as some form of npc.

andy85332d ago

She is, I read she will be a character. Not a dig in any form but I hope she's alive when it releases

Relientk77332d ago

That's over 7,000 hours geez. What crazy stats

nitus10332d ago

Actually it is very easy to up the number of hours you have been playing a game. Basically all you need to do (assuming you have a PS4 or 5) is to place the console into stand-by without exiting the game, so if you do this a one hour gameplay actually becomes a 24 gameplay or longer.

boing1332d ago

What? So the game is still runinng when you put it to sleep? What?

EvertonFC332d ago

It's actually sad not an achievement but hey we need the full story details.

Knushwood Butt332d ago

There's someone on my friend list that has more than 6200 hours on Uncharted 4.

vTuro24332d ago

7k hours over 15 years isn't that crazy. The fact that he's been playing the same game for 15 years is more impressive.

And then you got people that want to finish a game every week.

Rhythmattic332d ago

Nailed what is the Spectrum... For good and bad, Quality or Quantity..Or the unreasonable to reason for. ;)

jznrpg332d ago

Of course you will hit a ridiculous stat after 15 of anything.
My main character for Everquest had over 500 days played in the first 6 years of the game. I was young then and had a lot of time on my hands. I don’t think I could duplicate that again until I retire and not sure I could match it if I tried.

EvertonFC332d ago

500 days in 6 years is nothing lol, you do realise how many days in a year right ?

poppatron332d ago

I might be getting the maths wrong here, I think 500 days in 6 years works out at an average of just over 6 hours every single day. For 6 years. That’s pretty serious

EvertonFC332d ago

Edit: wrote this early this morning, I understand it's lots of hours now lol at myself 😂🤣😜

RedDevils332d ago

The only way to achieve this, is by having no life outside of video game lol.

Outlawzz332d ago

Strange choice of game but hey that's some devotion. Congrats to them!
