Hellblade 2 Is 30FPS, Adding More Fuel To 30 vs 60 Debate

30 vs 60 FPS has been a hotly debated topic since the release of the Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 consoles. What side are you on?

I'm of the side that doesn't really care. I like it when games offer a choice but I dont treat them any differently if there isnt one. A good game is still a good game and you are only going to know if its good by playing it yourself.

Sonic188146d ago (Edited 46d ago )

The world's most powerful console and Hellblade 2 a first party exclusive can't do dynamic 4K in 60fps after being in development for 7 years. But we got the PS5 thats supposed to be weaker compared to the series X doing dynamic 4K 60fps in Horizon forbidden West, God of War: Ragnarok, and Spider-Man 2 all open world games perfectly. Not to mention Hellblade 2 is a linear game and still can't do 60fps. It's comical and unacceptable but let's move the goal post. What's really funny is that Rachet and Clank is a linear game with a 60fps and raytracing option 😂

StormSnooper46d ago

It’s really not acceptable. This is a linear game…

Cacabunga46d ago

First short, now this.. xbox is really an entertaining brand😂

VenomUK46d ago

Who here’s GENUINELY triggered about the frame rate? If anyone does insist on 60 fps is it really worth waiting months extra for the PS5 version?

Ironmike46d ago

Aren't those games cross gen though using an old game engine and not unreal 5 ouch

Cacabunga46d ago

Must be what 15fps on xss ?

senorfartcushion46d ago

Yeah but regardless of the console being really powerful the game might not be. 60fps games are not usually 4k, making them less powerful than games that can run in both. Either that or it makes them less powerful because they CAN be ran in 60fps at 4k.

peppeaccardo45d ago

Currently playing Spiderman 2, Hoghwart and GT7 at 120 Hz on my PS5 .... just saying ...

thesoftware73045d ago

Show me a UE5 game on PS that pushes 4K 60. They don't exist; you just named mostly games that can run well on PS4. Hellblade 2 is a new-gen engine that pushes a lot of bells and whistles.

And let's be real, HellBlade 2 looks graphically better than all the games you listed.

Flakegriffin45d ago

My favorite is the excuse of “we want cinematic experience”

Okay, so why isn’t it 30fps across the board? Why does it run 60fps on PC? Lol

wiz719145d ago

@Sonic man stfu all those PS5 games have PS4 counterparts I would hope the PS5 would run PS4 games at 60FPS you goofy … lol yall Sony pony’s mad asf now with games looking like Rise of Ronin I don’t think yall should be talking at all lol

darthv7245d ago

@Sonic... all the games you mentioned did not initially have a 60fps mode. or more specifically... the majority of those who played the 2018 GoW did so on a base PS4 which was 30fps. Same goes for Horizon, same goes for Spider-Man and even going back to the PS3 where ALL the R&C games ran at 30fps as well as big critical hits like uncharted and TLoU. NOBODY complained.... being 30fps is NOT the big deal people make it out to be.

You (like myself & others) are just spoiled by the choice of 60fps now. Choice is not a bad thing... but then again neither is only have one option if that option provides the best experience visually and audibly.

BLow45d ago

I remember before this gen launched and all that we heard from the fanboys from a certain side for more than a year. Hardware ray tracing, 60 fps, RDNA 2, Direct X 12 blah blah blah. Which system's 1st party is actually doing all that AT LAUNCH right now. Now look where we at. It's funny how things change lol and now all we hear is excuses on the world's most powerful console. Remember Redfall shipped at 30fps and how that one looked? Wheres the Ray tracing? Errrbody got short memories now.🤣🤣🤣 ;

Now I loved the 1st Hellblade and I'm sure this one will be good but damn. L after L. Now "cinematic" is ok. Dynamic resolution is ok. You can't make this shit up. Oh well, happy gaming people.

I prefer 60fps, but I’m also well aware that you can’t expect to get graphic heavy games with 60fps on games that’s not expected to sell tons of million copies. There’s not a budget for it. Graphics has always been a bigger selling point over fps, so when they make a graphic heavy game the work needed to get higher fps increases. It’s easier to get a budget for it if you have a huge IP like Spider Man that’s expected to sell tons more than Hellblade.

RaidenBlack46d ago

Well, FSR3 is also coming to console space ... so lets see ...

Einhander197246d ago

So is PSSR, on a 33.5 tf console too.

RaidenBlack46d ago (Edited 45d ago )

@Einhander1972,
Just an FYI, 33.5TF only going by AMD's marketed dual issue compute (DIC). Realistically, it will be around 16-18TF (that's pretty powerful, don't get me wrong, nearly double powerful if we're lucky), but definitely not 3+ times more powerful than base PS5.
Rumors are Pro's GPU likely based/derived from 7800XT (since leaked specs kinda match)
And technically, in real world the 7800XT is actually around 18.5TF GPU. Dual issue compute, is what gets it up to 37TF.
Games don't take advantage of dual issue compute, as evident by 20.7 TF 6800XT out performing 18.5TF 7800XT (37.3TF DIC) in PC game benchmarks.
Future consoles games are guaranteed to take advantage of upscaling techniques (be it FSR3 or PSSR).
Immortals of Aveum is already introducing it for performance bump across both consoles.

Amplitude45d ago (Edited 45d ago )

Though it's unfortunate, the vast majority of studios have switched to UE5 (including for HellBlade 2).
You aren't going to see literally any UE5 games run at 60fps on these consoles if UE5's new features are being used.
These inexpensive gaming boxes are over 4 years old, which is longer than most people would even keep a GPU. Buy a PC and a 40-series GPU if you want games to look this good at 60 - otherwise, keep playing games without Lumen, RTAO, RT reflections and shadows, etc.

30FPS will be the norm going forward if games keep pushing the tech in this way - hence the need for a PS5 Pro or PC. Unless you want games to keep looking the same as they have all generation with their horrendous screen space reflections, pop in textures, lighting that makes moving objects look disconnected from the environment, etc - then we should probably accept the switch to 30 and accept that if you want better you need to upgrade your hardware. It's time.

Tech moves fast now. And no, FSR3 can not increase a frame rate from 30 to 60 *especially* on hardware like this.

Lightning7746d ago

They put way more emphasis on graphics, fidelity and presentation over everything else I understand that but most of these types are 60fps. In fact I'm surprised it's 30 fps.

SF being 30 sure it's open world, I think redfall is 60 now but 30 at launch still unacceptable now. Most current gen games are being 30 I know that. With MS tech, money and time they should of gotten this at 60.

Maybe the game is doing allot, graphically they sacrificed 60?

Either way MS 100% has a feature complete problem in their games. Just yet another long laundry list of issues MS can't get right.

Sonic188146d ago (Edited 46d ago )

"Most current gen games are being 30 I know that."

Most PS5 *first party exclusives* has a 60fps option. Even Rise of the Ronin has it😂. Hellblade 2 is a Xbox first party exclusive that should have that option especially after being in development for 7 years. UNACCEPTABLE

Lightning7746d ago (Edited 46d ago )

I wasn't even talking about PS exclusives I was talking about 3rd party in general. I have no clue why you would bring up PS. Most of PS games this gen are cross gen also. Rise of The Ronin also struggles to hit 60 fps also often dipping into the 40's. Dogma is 30.

I got some new tidbits that the 30 fps was a creative decision. Not a hardware issue they chose 30ps to make it feel like a "movie"

Regardless it still stands.

I guess you missed this part where I said.

"Either way MS 100% has a feature complete problem in their games. Just yet another long laundry list of issues MS can't get right."

Dang man at least try to keep up.

Ironmike46d ago

Ronin doesn't get near 60 and with those graphics ouch

Tacoboto45d ago

How're you enjoying that unstable 30fps in Dragon's Dogma 2, Sonic?

Sonic188145d ago (Edited 45d ago )

"How're you enjoying that unstable 30fps in Dragon's Dogma 2, Sonic?"

That's because of the lazy developers. Digital foundary already said the developers had a lot to do with that and I also believe they admitted to it😂 Hellblade 2 is a Microsoft first party exclusive and it shouldn't be no excuses for that. It's unacceptable on Ninja Theory part that they can't add a 60fps option

Tacoboto45d ago

DF said no such thing about Capcom being lazy in regards to DD2's performance. The only laziness they suggested was the lack of a 30fps cap toggle.

Which is now patched into the game. DF acknowledges the struggles the game has with CPU bottlenecks and acknowledges Capcom's remarks committing to look into it especially on PC.

Anything else is a false interpretation by you, but you probably didn't watch their coverage on it anyway (you clearly didn't listen to it)

Sonic188145d ago (Edited 45d ago )

We're talking about Hellblade 2 a first party exclusive that's being in development for 7 years and don't have a 60fps option that's unacceptable. Dragon's Dogma is a third party multiple game and has nothing to do with Hellblade 2. But I can see you just wanted to mention Dragon's Dogma 2 one game with issues only every platform that's not even a Microsoft first party exclusive😂 Keep defending Microsoft if you like.

Most current gen are not 30. Especially not linear games.

Kornholic46d ago

Most current gen games are 30 fps? That's complete bs. I have 0 PS5 in my collection that are capped at 30 fps.

30 fps games this gen are outliers, not the majority.

Lightning7746d ago

I guess you forgot most PS5 and Series X games are cross gen also. Suicide SQUAD, Alan Wake 2 are 60 fps, Plagues Tale now 60 and Gotham Knights 30 still, Dogma is 30. There's more games but it's a toss up. Certain games are 30 then patches on 60 later. Tbh we should be seeing way more 60 and it should be the standard.

Kornholic46d ago

Most games will always be "cross gen" since they need to run on older PC hardware, too. I guess you forgot that 30 fps games this gens are not the majority, but outliers.

Flewid63845d ago

This is objectively false, and I say that as a 60fps gamer.

This is very much a slow, cinematic game so the choice here makes total sense.

darthv7245d ago

So if this was really just a design decision to make it more of a movie... Why can't people just accept that decision? I am spoiled by the choice of quality and performance modes but I can understand a devs decision to do one and not the other. I guess others just arent as open minded. Its like trying to understand why a 3rd party game would be exclusive vs being multiplatform. That decision is up to the dev and yet people will still question the reason they don't agree with.

I say, just dont even worry about the why and just play the damn games and enjoy them for what they are. A break from the reality that surrounds us on a daily basis.

“What side are you on?”

60fps given the choice. Always.

Abear2146d ago

Choice would be nice, they should give a performance mode option for those that prefer

Obscure_Observer46d ago

I don´t care!

It´s a true next gen game after all!

Bring it!

Kornholic46d ago

A true next gen game in what sense?

Barlos46d ago

According to Obscure, all it needs to be 'true next gen' is for it not to be on PS5. He said the same thing about Starfield. Look how that turned out.

CrashMania46d ago (Edited 46d ago )

It's funny isn't it, all these guys clowning on PS5 'third person narrative movie games', yet suddenly this game, which is similar scope to the first, looks to play the same, wilp be way more walking simulator and movie-like than any playstation game is suddenly the best thing since sliced bread and 30fps is now fine lol.

jjb198145d ago

Don't feed the troll. These clowns just come here to scream out "Long live dA PoWa Uv Da KLOwDZ, FTW, YOLO!".

The more exclamation marks the better, right?

You sound 5 years old.

andy8546d ago

Name one aspect it is, I'm legitimately interested

Sonic188145d ago (Edited 45d ago )

All Unreal engine 5 games 😁😂 and Black Myth W will have a 60fps option

Hellblade 2 Review Embargo Lifts On Launch Day

The review embargo for Hellblade 2 appears to lift on the same date as the launch of the game, just an hour before it's available.

Reviews dont usually spoil its usually the players that get it early spoils it

Cacabunga5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

Like all other games being reviewed before launch day ?

This game will disappoint many players. Ninja Theory’s last game

Barlos5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

A well written review normally won't spoil anything though.

Come on, we all know it's usually not a good sign when the review embargo lifts on launch day. Doesn't mean to say the game is going to be bad or anything, but it does often point to a lack of confidence.

OtterX5d ago

@Cacabunga Microsoft will dismantle Ninja Theory, even if the game reviews well, Bc that's how they roll! 😎

_SilverHawk_5d ago

That's quite strange and early. They should lift review embargo a week after the game launches

Cacabunga5d ago

OtterX

Unfortunately true.
I wish they stayed independant and signed with big publishers to develop some great licences like DMC.
I think Heavenly Sword 2 would def be successful if done right. Same way they can be the Bluepoint Games of action games.

Crows905d ago

Ummm...review embargos have nothing to do with spoilers...if someone gets it early they can still spoil it

romulus234d ago

Games can be reviewed without spoiling.

ThinkThink4d ago

If they didn't provide review copies until launch day, I would agree with you, but reviewers got their review codes this week. Since it's only an 8 hour game, that's plenty of time to have a review ready. I'm taking the studio heads word though, based on yesterday's interview.

Reviews on launch day is never a good sign.
If this games fails, goodbye Ninja Theory.

MrBaskerville4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

There has been good games where this happened. I think they did it to Arkanes Prey, which was a very good game. But it shows a lack of interest/faith from the publisher.

With Senua I think it's more that Ms could 't care less about a prestige project like this atm. They have pivoted and only want big hitters, so why put money in supporting Senua? Just throw it out there and move on. It's the last part of their old vision for xbox and no longer relevat. A Phil Spencer game.

Sadly. Game will probably be very good, like the first one.

romulus234d ago

Potentially even if it doesn't fail. HiFi Rush was critically praised by journalists and gamers alike and look what happened to Tango.

PapaBop4d ago

Well they'll be in good company, next Microsoft will have to buy EA for their graveyard building expertise, I'm sure Spencer would only just dig half a grave now, then finish it later.

Ninver4d ago

Even if it does remotely well they're still getting the 🪓 from lumberjack MS.

DarXyde5d ago

Personally, I think the game will flop commercially. It doesn't really have any visible marketing campaign from what I can tell. It's also clearly got a hefty budget and development cycle. I'm sure this doesn't have a AA budget.

Critically... I'm not sure. I think if it's judged as its own product, it'll be fine. 85+ on metacritic, I'm thinking. But the problems I see this game's score running into are comparisons to the original which touched on some fascinating concepts (and thereby set a high bar already) and the time between announcement and release. Quite some time, and this was the game that introduced the Series X. I think if reviewers and gamers remove themselves from those two things, it's a good game. But my sense is that's going to influence perceptions quite a bit.

MrBaskerville4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Would have been a perfect launch title tbh . The way it showcases the power of xbox.

seanpitt234d ago

6/10 confirmed.. they are definitely hiding something probably the length and replay value

Bathyj4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I mean what does it even matter? People aren't going to buy it anyway. They are going to play it on Game pass.

Will they not download it if the reviews don't come out the day of release?

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 4d ago
Tacoboto5d ago

That's not a good sign.

Review codes have been sent out as of 8 hours ago (according to Tom Henderson on X) so at least they aren't withholding those... But you'd think with confidence they'd want positive reviews to get buzz going online the weekend before release.

... But if they're expecting mid reviews, yeah sure lift that embargo when most people are asleep.

Kornholic5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

MS might be withholding review codes from more critical reviewers to inflate the launch window Metascore. Just like they did with Starfield.

Jingsing5d ago

Yeah, They've been doing that for a while. Picking and choosing publications. At the end of the day if you do that then don't be surprised if that taints reviewers attitude towards your game.

helicoptergirl5d ago

This is the first time I'm starting to think that MS may actually want this game to not do well so they can more easily justify closing the studio down? Am I crazy for suddenly thinking that? I mean, no advertising. Review embargo on launch day? This game and studio goes against what Matt Booty has said they will be focusing on going forward in regards to their business.

I know people were speculating and half joking that Ninja Theory "is next". But this is the first time I get that feeling in my stomach. I'm probably thinking too much into it. Anyway, I hope I'm wrong.

MrBaskerville5d ago

Wouldn't go that far, but they must have spent a fortune on it and I can't imagine it being very profitable. I don't think current day MS would greenlight it.

DarXyde4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

More appropriately, it makes more sense to believe they really expected the acquisitions of such major publishers to increase game pass subs with high retention. This doesn't seem to be the case though, and Activision cost an extraordinary penny.

At this point, it's just about turning things around quickly.

However, I don't think you're wrong either. It's not about wanting to close them, per se, and that might be the secret metric for success they haven't disclosed: "Did this new game drive Sub growth by a certain percentage?" In that case, even a very well received game could doom a studio if it doesn't generate enough interest or hype in Game Pass. It's very safe to assume that XGP is very clearly aligned to closures. It's become damn near THE metric for Xbox. So when a game isn't played much or generating subs, studio closes. I think this is extremely problematic for Ninja Theory if true. I can't say I know many people playing through their games more than once and I don't see Hell blade 2 driving user retention either.

TheColbertinator5d ago

Nice. I could speedrun it by midnight and go to sleep after.

Notellin4d ago

It's a walking simulator you can't speed run them. It's a power walking game.

crazyCoconuts4d ago

That's the kinda funny thing about all the concern for the game... It's only like 8 hours... Good or bad a very small portion of my gaming time will be impacted.
If GTA6 got hosed, on the other hand, I'd probably cry lol

Flakegriffin5d ago

Zero marketing and embargo lifts when the game launches?

No confidence from team Xbox.
