Aloy’s second and greatest adventure lands on PC with an well optimized and strikingly gorgeous port
As PlayStation announces its new strategy to encourage PC users to choose PS5 it is a bitter-sweet moment for PC gamers.
I mean, it's a business based on hardware market. Do we expect them to not even try? It's not like Nintendo doesn't do the same by not putting any games on PC and Microsoft until recently did the same. I don't care what they attempt, as long as they don't abuse the community or lie about their goals/requirements.
Will it work? Not likely. Should we care? No. Let them waste their time, it doesn't affect anything.
let them try ... at the end of the day, we get few extra PC games ... yay ... and also promotes game preservation via PC ... so double yay.
If only Playstation games provided the ease of pc gaming features.
Primary being very few PS games support m/kb.
If only PC games supported controllers more. Main reason I play primarily on console. So many games have shit support on PC. Playing Dark Envoy now, and it's quite frustrating since I have to switch to keyboard during cut scenes just to make sure advancing conversation doesn't also auto-select a decision. Let alone it's quite rough to select between characters and inventory screens are bad bad bad.
Anywho, similar complaints for both I find. But, I 100% agree that both PC and consoles should support both as best as possible.
PS may push more kb support in the future to get more PC converts, we'll see.
As someone with a high end PC, I feel like the ease is on PS5. Too many PC games are a troubleshooting nightmare, which few people have the time for when all you want to do is pop in a game & play it.
I just use an Xbox controller on my laptop for everything 😆 .. I haven't used a keyboard / mouse combo for PC gaming since 1996
I don't think you understand what I mean by the lack of m/kb support on PS.
Over a thousand titles have PS controller support on PC.
Not even 30 titles have m/kb support on PS5.
Once you are done with the single player title, you'll go back to playing your daily shooter/looter/mmo etc which the pc gamer has mastered with their mouse and keyboard.
Why would any pc gamer make the switch?
PC is secondary to PlayStation for them. Mouse and keyboard would affect development. Live service will have it but most single player games aren’t going to have it as PC is not the focus
I wish them the best of luck.
But PC players are often a patient bunch, many will even wait for Epic launcher exclusivity to end until a game comes to Steam.
If they didnt buy the console when its games were exclusive, why would they do it now theyre not?
All you need is that one game that'll make a few switch at a time. Like a game a PC player REALLY wants.
It just doesn't work that way though. Plenty of the best games ever made were never available on PC. That didn't make PC gamers buy consoles to play them. This kind of strategy has never worked in the past and it won't work now. It's fine for PS to hold their games back and release on PC later, but to think that will boost console sales is wishful thinking. All this will accomplish is some double dipping, which is obviously good for business.
People aren't going to switch from pc to ps5, why would anyone do that for a game?
Most sony exclusives aren't all that to begin with, and pc has the option to upgrade what they want when they want it. Having access to some ps5 games, gamepass and steam.
Thinking this would happen is naive
I mean if there's 10 million pc gamers out there...getting atleast just 1 million from there is probably a good thing..right?
PC players are not a monolith, I don't know why people keep thinking they speak for the entirety of all PC gamers like they all know each other personally. You think out of the millions of PC gamers not one single person will be impatient?Well Sony is willing to bet there will be. Why would they do it now? People's feelings change and new PC gamers come along all the time that may also feel different about waiting, that's why.
PC gamers are just too patient and loyal to their gaming set ups, something they've spent a lot of money on to perfect. They have backlogs of games which many never get round to finishing or get round to at all and will always have other multiplatform releases to keep them going.
Over the many years Sony has published so many awesome titles such as The Last of Us, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Infamous, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Dreams, Puppeteer, Resistance, Heavy Rain, Gran Turismo, Motor Storm, God of War, Horizon, Ratchet and Clank, Spiderman, Ghost of Tsushima, Bloodborne
If none of those games BEFORE all these PC ports convinced a hardcore PC gamer to get a PS5 console then why on Earth would porting them them to PC now make any difference? All PC gamers now know 100% is that they just have to be patient, which they are good at anyway to get a PS5 game 2 years later.
I get GaaS games or multiplayer focused titles but if people really want to play these games they'd have gotten a PS console years ago.
Not sure they're aiming to convince the hardcore PC gamer.
Not sure why people are obsessing over his comment...it seems pretty simple to me.
He will do all he can to entice gamers to move to his ecosystem. As you say....exclusives existing hasn't moved many gamers over. But if they get to try them and love the games then they might change their mind about waiting 2 years.
We're in an echo chamber on this site...I've Personally seen people with Xbox and PC setups but no PlayStation. I've also seen people with small PC setups but no console. Not every pc gamer invests thousands and many may decide to put one in the living room.
They're not looking to convince all of players to buy a PlayStation...just a few...and really it is just a PR statement after all...they have to give a reason why single player won't release day 1....not to mention they also have to ensure current PlayStation gamers don't jump ship to PC. It goes both ways and they're ignoring the big L by putting any of their games off their platform.
it's not just about loyalty or sunk cost, pc is an open platform while consoles are closed platforms. If you for example want to mod, you will play on pc, no question about it. Also if you like indie games, steam is a fucking goldmine for that. I've been playing a lot of indie games over the last years and there just seems to be an endless amount of them on steam. Also not having games locked to a certain fps is a prettty big deal for me and I assume a lot of other pc players.
@Walalon Steam sales are basically the same as PS sales. I was going to buy a Steam Deck and I heard about these Steam sales but the games I was interested in were not any cheaper. Indie games were cheap and older AAA were cheap but the same can be said for PS store sales. I didn’t end up getting the Steam Deck as there weren’t any games that I wanted to play that wasn’t already on PS and prices aren’t much different
And how do you know out of the millions of PC gamers that not one single person ever went ahead and bought a PlayStation console for one or more of those games? People keep speaking for the entirety of millions of PC gamers like they know them all personally. Here's one example for you, I'm currently typing on a recently purchased PC that cost me over twenty five hundred dollars and is more than capable of running any game including Sony exclusives that come to PC and yet I still bought a PS5 so apparently I'm not patient or loyal enough to my set up, hope it's not mad at me for not being loyal.
Some of those people will consider getting a PS5 some wont. I was a PC gamer for a long time and I’m a console only gamer now. Everyone’s different.
Who cares? Then just stay on PC and play the waiting game. No big deal. Sony wins in the end anyway.
Yup. If the strategy doesnt work, all they have to do is to change their mind, publish the games on PC, and they still win anyway.
I mean if there's any single player Sony games that I actually want that aren't on PC then I would buy said console to play them on. But the ones that I like that aren't on PC are few and far between anyway so no loss for me.
If I game, it's usually multiplayer titles, otherwise I like playing around with some other software.
Astro Bot is the game that just did it for me. I'm gonna have to grab a PS5 again for that.
I did this for Ratchet Rift Apart too but ended up selling the PS5 after getting my plat. Rebought it on PC and other than GoW Ragnarok and Horizon FW (which eventually I could get anyway), I haven't had a reason to downgrade my graphics, controller features, ease of recording, and increase my game costs and monthly subscriptions throughout this entire generation.
I play on a TV with a controller but this has been the absolute worst console gen for both consoles. Never in my life thought I'd be a PC gamer but I've been spoiled by the cheap costs, cross-platform controllers and mostly the unbelievably useful Steam controller config.
I hate these stupid divisive articles.
Most PC players I know also have a PS and/or a Switch. That way they get to play all the games they want when they want.
Exactly, at least if you have a decent PC and a PS you can play the online games for free on PC, and just use the PS for single player games or something.
Agreed PC+PS5 is a great como. PS5 in the living room to play mostly the new games and PC in the bedroom to play the older games I never had a chance to play like DA O or Fallout LV etc with all the mods
Yeah for example in my case PC for multiplayer and soul likes games. Meanwhile my Ps5 it's for party games when my friends show up and fighting games... We can enjoy whatever we want.. this articles like to create a fire on nothing.
I'm still waiting for FFXVI. I can always wait for a game because there's so many others to play.
Haha spiteful like a kid, because I don't like his favourite toy. Just get a PC bud, it's much better.
You should also tell me what happens in Ghost of Tsushima as I've just started that.
I was jus joking, there's no Christopher lol. Makin a point that may not matter to you but matters to others (spoilers*).
I don't think it's about pushing PC Players to Playstation.
I am pretty sure it's about keeping Playstation relevant.
They've seen how Xbox has been failing ever since they went day and day on all their games on PC.
If all the big hitters like Spider-Man, Horizon, Gran Turismo, Uncharted, Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima etc was released same date on PC, the negative spiral for console sales would start.
I have a Series X, a PS5, a Switch and a 4080 PC Rig. The piece that ain't in use is my Series X.
If all Playstation games were to be released day 1 on PC, my PS5 would collect dust as well.
Console sales themselves doesn't boost profit a lot, but games, accessories and services do but most importantly, brand recognition.
As Sony stated in their reports, every PS5 have $700+ in sales on top of the console sale.
If Playstation Studio games were to be release day 1 on PC, the initial sales would probably be a few percentage higher, but in the long run the profit would be less, boss to the 30% Steam cut but also lower price points, piracy etc.
It doesn't take many brain cells to understand why Sony don't want to fall in to the dame trap Microsoft did.
It doesn't really make sense. Since it's going to be released on PC, players will just wait for it to become available. If they really want to entice players to play on PlayStation, they shouldn't release any of their first-party games on PC at all.
Exclusives are what make a specific console unique from others. It's still working for Nintendo, so Sony should have just kept their games on their platform as well.
Additionally, Sony should stop with these live service games and stick to what they do best, which is making great single-player games. This strategy has worked since the PS1 era up to now.
Sony game budgets are significantly higher than Nintendo game budgets, TLOU2 and H:FW were over 200 million dollars, Nintendo won't be budgeting that for any of their games.
Porting games to PC helps keep their business going, and besides their goal is to maximize profits, at this point there's no going back away from PC ports.
Im no industry analyst but I can tell you this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Like, you have to be completely oblivious to PC gamers.
First off, there’s a reason they’ve stuck to PC and not console. Secondly, they’ll pirate/emulate your game before going out and spending $500 on a console to play an inferior version of the game when the PC release is coming at some point. Lastly, PS5 console sales have sold less than last-gen when you’ve already released many games on PC before the sequels… why would it change now?
Yea, this guy sounds like he knows what’s up. Glad to have him aboard.,,
Seriously, why do people think Sony is going after most PC gamers? There are many gamers who play on a few platforms and you are going to have a small percentage who would be willing and open to not switching, but adding a new system.
Because it has to be black or white with some people, no grey areas allowed that way everything can be "divisive" and "controversial" and blah blah blah. You know the drill.
It's not a new strategy you idiot they've been saying this since 2021. They have the numbers, they know what's important to playstation and where they make their money. Herman was just being nice, pc brings next to nothing to playstation, they made almost 30 billion in revenue last fiscal year of it 700 million was from pc its irrelevant. Day and date at best would have no effect on their bottom line at worst it would delay development times further, expose their 1st party games day 1 to stealing the second it released on pc, they'd have to pay 30% to steam and it would open themselves up to losing their paying customer base. PC fans are delusional and they're more vocal now that the toxic xbox community has migrated over their.
Sony published Helldivers 2 and over 50% of the sales were on PC, not PS5. That is what Sony has to lose if they push any more to try to force PC gamers to use their launcher and PSN.
They've already lost 180+ territories on PC as PSN doesn't exist in those regions. They need to keep what they have left or lose it all.
You seem to think 700 million is worth nothing. That's just a few games ported to PC, not the games and consoles that Sony is selling.
@Seafort, so? That's always been in their plans it's a live service game pc makes sense. People wilthin in those countries (some aren't even actual countries)can keep buying those games using a VPN like they always have. Yes 700 million is small compared to the money they make on their own store front. They're not gonna jeopardize that for a platform that has rampant cheating/stealing that encourages customers to not buy their hardware. PC is an open platform Sony can use it how they see fit, it doesn't owe steam users anything.
No, it's exactly what I said they were trying to do when Zero Dawn was released for PC.
Sony isn't trying to push anyone, pull maybe as in lure them over yes but the way this is worded makes out they're trying to force the issue which just simply isn't true
Yes it's a "terrible idea" to try and sell your console they should do like MS and not even try. Do I need to add the sarcasm symbol? You know it's ok to be a PlayStation gamer and game on PC too, the world wont end if you do.
i mean, they can try, but i doubt that PC players only will make the change. why would they lol
I like consoles I rarely PC game. But there are a lot more games I can run on PC then I can on a console. I can also run emulators on PC I could on console until the system is banned. There are games on PC that have mods that I can't get on console. Like Thomas the Tank Engine in RE2 remake. Epic gives away free games on console I need PS plus or Xbox live to claim the free game then I need to renew my membership just to play that game. On PC I don't need renew a membership to play that free Epic game. And unlike console I don't need a membership to play a game online with friends. Shifting people from PC to console won't work there are people who are strictly PC only and they love that choice they made.
I disagree. Console gaming is unique. The current state of gaming is trash, WORST CONSOLE GENERATION IN GAMING HISTORY, and we don't want to lose Console gaming to PC. We just need to get rid of all the mobile gaming aspects out. Once those business models leaked into the console business, it began to decline. There's PC gaming, console gaming, and mobile gaming, the three should NEVER mix. Keep Console Gaming (and physical media) alive!
neimahi, it is not the worst console generation not even close. I see people mindlessly repeating this propaganda spread by the media. There has never been more great games available to play and more ways to access them.
Article is trying to make this sound malicious. They just hope that people like the games enough that they'll invest more in Playstation. Such a crime wow -_-
What a stupid article. I guess I shouldn't be surprised based on who submitted it.
I'm pretty sure Sony are not aiming to get the 4090 owners to go and buy a ps5 in order to play Spiderman 2.
They are looking at those Dell Optiplx users. The ones that grabbed a Optiplex on eBay and put in a gtx 1650. The ones that can't afford to build a whole new pc. But they may have the funds to buy a digital ps5. A whole system for the price of a mid range GPU.
The likes of the 1650 and 1060 and 2060 are still very popular amongst the pc community.
I have a high end PC and I would still prioritize getting the console version of a game if it at least runs at 60fps. 🤷
It's a disingenuous headline. Sony isn't "pushing" anything. There have ALWAYS been PC owners who also buy consoles. Sony simply doesn't want to do anything to disrupt that natural tendency for a certain percentage of PC gamers. Sony doesn't expect PC owners to adopt PS5 en masse but enough do to generate a significant amount of revenue for Sony for it to matter to them. Why would Sony sabotage that trend?
They aren’t going to release games day 1 on PC besides the live service stuff so what do you expect? It would really hurt their hardware business. Xbox was looking like they could do better than they released games on PC day 1 and we see the results. As it is now you can wait for PC ports or get a PlayStation.
Thing Is you are all missing the unspoken aspect of this. Any pc players enticed to get a ps5 to play exclusives rather than wait is a bonus for Sony. But more importantly, they make most of their money on the cut they take of 3rd party content sold on their platform abit like steam does on pc. This is more about not giving ps5 players a reason to just buy a pc. Xbox went day and date the next generation of consoles and they have lost half their console sales but retain activity online profiles. They realised and tried to pivot to gamespass. But it doesn't have enough subscribers to make it sustainable. Now they are having to go 3rd party to try and sort their books.
If Sony go day and date on pc, they would lose ps players to pc especially next gen. If they lose half their player base- their revenue decreases significantly. They then have less money for game development and can't take many risks. That means fewer titles in development, fewer new IP's and probably studio closures.
I just don’t really get why people play on a PC there’s no unified trophy/achievement system, one store where everything is, games just work for what system your playing on, no updating drivers/ hardware. Plug any game into a PlayStation/Xbox/Nintendo and it just works all in one place easy. And you get to play on the couch or gaming chair not some small monitor hunched over a desk.
An official PlayStation VR2 adapter for PC made by Sony is being certified. It won't be long before the VR headset is officially compatible.
one step closer to unlocking the headsets full power.
I'm extremely underwhelmed with how Sony has treated it's psvr2 customers seriously Nintendo treated it's Wii U owners of which the sales were probably equal in the headsets 2bd year v the consoles far better.
This is the least they could do
I agree. I'm a day 1 consumer too. 😢 For my day 1 Vita. I do not like when Sony does that crap.
I still don't have PSVR2, but this was always my concern. I almost pulled the trigger for RE4, but I waited it out to see what changed. As it happens, not much.
I love my Vita. Great piece of hardware. It didn't shine the way we know it could have, but it'll still got amazing titles.
PC support is very much a step in the right direction. Even if some PC only titles can make use of the headset, it does increase PSVR adoption: it's a great piece of hardware and it's also the best in its price bracket, so I see a way forward for uptake. Who knows? Maybe that'll allow VR devs to feel more comfortable releasing on PS5.
Agreed, but to your point, those dollars went a lot further back then than they do now. This should have been a consideration from the beginning.
Imagine buying a monitor or tv that could only work with one device. That's basically what this equates to, so they left a LOT of money on the table by not making it PC compatible from the getgo. But to Sony's credit, even they were unaware of how popular their games would be once released on PC.
No credit to Sony on this one I’m afraid, first party and generally Sony support for psvr2 really hasn’t been great
@poppatron yes, I wasn't implying the PSVR2 games became popular or well supported, only that Sony was considering the PC market an afterthought. I imagine more people will want to buy this when it works with PC. I know I will, as I play on both.
I doubt there will be foveated rendering implemented on PC. PSVR2 is already a better experience than PCVR. PS5 Pro will unlock the full power.
Probably not but not all psvr2 games use fov many are just straight ports from quest systems which barely take advantage the headsets capabilities.
Still I'd rather have more options and games to play on this than a tiny LIbrary
so now Sony is going to sell me an adapter I have to buy so I can use the headset on my PC? Gee, how generous of you :P
While it's great that I will be able to use this headset instead of my Index or Q3 for PC only VR titles, it's still a sad realization that Sony is sorta waiving the white flag here. Here's hoping they at least make some of their PSVR2 exclusive content available on PC as well now.
I don't see it as waving the white flag. PSVR the first one even though modders did get it working on pc it was a awful experience.
PSVR2 one of the best VR headsets available. Requires just one usb c cable. Even though I truly believe exclusives are what sell consoles. When it comes to VR it's very nich among gamers. I'm ecstatic that soon I can imo use the best VR headset on both ps5 and pc. No need for a pc vr headset. I have said it since PSVR2 was announced that I hope they make it pc compatible. With it being a very expensive headset and pc vr being more popular it just makes sense for Sony to do this.
as opposed to a Quest 3 that requires no cables, or a single cable if you want to pair it with your PC right? ;)
While the tech is better in the PSVR2 for the most part (I own an Index, Q3 and PSVR2), I'm still let down by certain things. Headset rumble is a novelty. Eye tracking has only been used well on a couple of titles.
to each their own I guess, but to me this doesn't give me confidence that Sony is fully investing in their own hardware, more like they are stepping back to allow others to fill in the gaps.
@Neonridr not owned a quest 3. Did own a quest 1 and 2 both where fairly good. Have used a quest 3 for a limited time and thought it was fine. But comfort wise not as nice as psvr2.
Tried using quest 2 via wireless streaming to my pc and it was so bad I much rather using a single cable and have a solid connection than streaming the game from pc to headset.
It's most likely just going to be a usb c to usb 3 adapter. Even for modern era a lot of new cases and motherboards don't have a usb c ports.
The budget but still fairly fairly high end pc I recently helped my friend build. He went with a b550 motherboard. Didn't have a usb c port or a on board socket to connect a pc case with a front panel usb c. Had to get a cheap pcie usb c.
They developed the headset/attached usb c cable so that it wasn’t possible to run through any port other than a designated ps5 port. The adapter allows all the data to be passed correctly to a none designated ps5 port.
Honestly, the final hurdle is still being wired. Ever since I got the Quest, being untethered is far too amazing. Even a single wire gets in the way at times. A PSVR3 if there ever is one, needs to be wireless.
The battery situation, low visual quality and other issues on Quest 3 make me glad they (Sony) made the choice they did.
That's easily remedied with a BoboVR S3 headstrap. The original strap is garbage. It hangs and sags on your eyes causing eye strain. I could not last 30 minutes with that strap until I switched to the BoboVR S3 it acts more like the PSVR headstrap so it hangs on your forehead. Plus the extra battery life gives me a good 3-4 extra hours. With another battery and their charger, I have unlimited play time. My only gripe with the Quest 3 is no OLED screen. I have access to an empty Tennis court and being able to walk around is an absolute game changer.
Wireless from PC is also a step down in visual quality. Tough to perceive it consciously but it’s definitely a factor. Psvr2 also has a noticeably wider FOV.
the Q3 has quite high resolution actually, and it's rendered across the entire screen. Let's not kid ourselves, maybe 1 or 2 titles is using the native resolution of the PSVR2 headset
The pixels on the Quest 3 are much clearer from edge to edge due to the pancake lenses. I was only referring to the difference between wired and wireless.
As for other factors, PSVR2 has foveated rendering, the difference there is huge. It has a much brighter image with real HDR and a wider FOV. Quest 3 on the other hand has sharper image quality around the peripheral. Overall I think the quality choices Sony made were better.
Quest 3 is a nice piece of kit. I've enjoyed having it. But the battery life is atrocious. My Anker battery pack helps some. Even the 16 foot cable to a wall outlet. But still, the battery in Quest 3 stinks. You have to spend a lot more for a decent amount of play time.
While I loved my PSVR, and like my PSVR2 the small amount of games I personally like compared to the first is disappointing. I bought the first day one, same with V.2, but I will not be buying a third for the PS6. With so little games coming to the unit and the tech inside the headset I would hope it will be compatible with the PS6.
PSVR2 had a better first year of software. So say the reviewers. You just didn't support it enough I guess.
Possibly, but I’m not going to buy games that I have no interest in, just to support a company. As I’ve said before I wish they would have asked and paid some of the third party devs to update their PSVR games to be playable on PSVR2.
So far I’ve bought Arizona Sunshine2, Saints & Sinners1&2, GT7, Resident Evil4&8, Project Wingman, Star Wars Tales From The Galaxy Edge, Crossfire Sierra Squad, Swordsman, Hubris, Gun Club, Moss1&2, Synapse, Crisis Brigade2, After The Fall, Puzzling Places, The Room, and Affected The Manor. I’d say I did my part supporting their first year lol.
Still have to pick up Legendary Tales, Tiger Blade, The Foglands, Switchback, Bulletstorm, Arashi, Madison, and a few more when released like Lo-Fi, Utility Room, Alien Rogue Incursion, Metro Awakening, and Wanderer.
Thats a decent amount of games I'd say. Are you really are PSVR1 had a better 1st year then? On a personal note I highly recommend Red Matter 2. Its in my top 3 games for the headset
On PSVR I had even more games, but the use of the move controllers made many games difficult to play, which is why I was wishing PS would have gotten some updates for the games.
But I can’t remember what games purchased in the first year of PSVR, but I have a many games for the system. Oh I never said PSVR1 had a better first year, I can’t remember that far back. All I was saying was I’m a little disappointed in the small selection of games that I personally like, some of those PSVR2 games I rebought from PSVR1 and a few of those were like a $10 upgrade like Moss iirc.
Red Matter2 I’ve heard good things about it, but I never played the first and don’t know if the new game is a self contained story or a continuation of the first. I will most certainly look at a few videos to see what the story is about.
At the end of last gen I commented that this current gen I would not be buying a PS5 right away and will wait a few years for the first wave of games to become dirt cheap. I waited three years, got my system free so the money went to the VR unit instead.
I do actually share your sentiment about no back compat with vr1 and not as many ports as there should be.
I played red matter 2 first. It’s better. They also remade he first red matter for VR2 and although the remake is great it’s not the league of red matter 2.
3rd party wise, sure. First party wise? Absolutely not. I mean you can probably count the 1st party software on one hand.
I sold my PSVR2 and never looked back. I never was a fan of VR but I gave it a shot. It’s fun for a few mins then I get tired of it. Sony had no intention on really supporting this thing and it shows. They just wanted a quick buck charging over 1k to even play the thing. Waste of money imo.
You need to give it enough money, space, and time. If any of those seem too tough dont bother buying it.
Year one was amazing. The highlight of this gen by far
I'm curious about the adapter part. The PSVR2 uses a standard USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port, so pretty much any mid-range motherboard from the last 4 or 5 years will have at least one header. So I hope this is actually a DisplayPort adapter/USB splitter; if so, this would make it THE VR headset to get.
I really like the PSVR2 but I want some good RPGs and JRPGS on it. Those are the games I normally buy and I want them in VR as well. Also I want more physical copies of games. There should be a physical copy of Arizona Sunshine 2 ! I would have bought it day one and I am very disappointed they never released it physically.
PC won’t change anything for the physical copy issue. Not sure if PC would help get RPGs/jrpgs on it or not.
Thank god. I love the hardware. I'm blown away that they could put that much effort into making the thing only to borderline abandon it in a matter of months.
Pity the lenses on it are shit, can't believe they cheaped out on the lenses and downgraded from psvr1.
I'm getting one, by far the most comfortable headset I've used and a really nice OLED display.
The Nerd Stash: "Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2 has some of the best graphics on Xbox, but there are PlayStation games that look even better."
Lol some sony fans now disagreeing with DF !?
They said :
Hellblade 2 is a defining moment in the evolution of real-time graphics".
(The Next Level in Real-Time Visuals)
Game
Takes advantage of everything UE5 offers
- Final game 'lives up to the lofty expectations' of the 2019 reveal
- Character rendering sets new standards and nearly resembles movie sequences with actual actors
- Leverages Unreal's Meta Human 5 to bypass the uncanny valley feel
- DF were left guessing whether some cut-scenes were in-game or real life footage (photo mode shows they're all real time)

Right now nothing on PS looks better than HB2.
5 PlayStation Exclusive Games" also on PC..
so what Exclusive? No one here confesses and accepted the word "Console exclusive". they were making jokes about it!
😂
@FTLmaster
Sony fans were making jokes first about the word " Console exclusive" here and on other sites.
Now they use the word by themselves.
Lol
I write console exclusive all the time. I use it in Xbox’s favor too. Those are the games I generally go after over there.
Now I understand who these articles are written for.
Just buy and support the game so MS doesn't shut down Ninja Theory.
You cant really talk when xbox has all its games released elsewhere. Not a good look.
This article says Bloodborne and Ghost of Tsushima has better graphics than Hellblade 2 i'm done! 🤣
Of course! But that doesn't make it invalid.
I haven't been playing too much recently except a bit of Dave the Diver (retro pixel art). But if this has the best graphics then I definitely want to see so will download it for my XSX and start the game. If I had more time I'd play through the first one first.
DF can talk from its arse all it wants. I’m sure they are spending their advertising money wisely.
I was under the impression Microsoft didn't have any marketing for this game. I also don't need to be paid to say Hellblade 2 is the most photo realistic game on consoles ever made.
People are free to disagree with DF, it's debatable how impartial they are.
The article is a bit of a stretch though. Hellblade has an open goal graphically because it's using the latest tech on small areas with crap framerate so the fidelity is through the roof. It's not impressive to me personally but it's an achievement that shouldn't be denied.
Yes. But then a picture can be extremely beautiful but you cant really play it. Hellblade must be beautiful but it has low frames, and its pretty much on rails so it does not really impress me personally.
I've been subscribed to DF's YouTube channel since before their videos were even narrated and I tell you no debate is necessary about how impartial they are.
DF has clearly had some level of proximity with Microsoft since the launch of the Xbox One X. They haven't exactly tried to hide either. Their coverage/damage control for Starfield was quite blatant.
So yes, people on all camps are free to disagree with DF's opinions.
That aside, this particular article is complete flamebait.
what good are graphics when rest of the game is a walking sim (coming from a pc fan) if it's only about graphics than any game can push the boundary but that's without much gameplay
to me gears of war 5 is more impressive because it had the graphics and gameplay to back it up, just like uncharted 2 back in the day. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is also up there.
I don't understand people. Both the PS5 and Xbox one X are great machines. I own both and could care less which system has a game that is marginally better looking than the other. Yes, Hellblade 2 is the best-looking console game right now, but it isn't a huge leap over what the PS5 has. Since I am not tied to one company's console, I see things differently I guess.
Agreed, plus traditionally all PS exclusives are third person action and everything on Xbox is usually FPS.
Let’s talk gameplay people, you know, that thing that actually matters? I remember Gamepro would rate “Fun Factor” in their reviews—is the game actually fun to play?!
If this was the judging method, and not resolution and “bespoke tech” that digital foundry wants you to be obsessed with, than Dave the Diver is my GOTY so far (ps5)
Grasping at straws to make a positive Playstation story. Too bad they can't talk about AAA first party games. Because "PS5 has NO GAMES!!!" Why can't people just be honest. HB2 looks amazing.
Woah there little fella, you are way lost in what is no longer reality, hope you left bread crumbs
Digital foundry recently said ps5 ports are holding back Xbox
You can’t really take them as gospel anymore
Okay, I've played all of those, and they looked good for their time. This game just takes realism to a whole other level. some would even say uncanny valley-esq at times.
Maybe that's why people are having a hard time with this game... its almost too real and makes them uneasy about it.
lol, really???? The title sounds so desperate. Those games are excellent but not in the same league.
..."not in the same league graphics wise*" Fixed it so you don't sound too crazy. Also not sure its in "another league" but I haven't seen it in person so 🤷🏽 idk.
All of those games on that list are literally objectively BETTER GAMES than Hellblade 2.
I would say those games are on a much higher level because Hellblade is a game made to look great but its not on par when it comes to how it is linear with small playing areas and low frames. Anyone can do that, but is it a good game? No.
If this is an argument, then yeah , this is desperation. Why do you sonyboys even care? The market always dictates, besides last I checked (as a ps5 owner) sony exclusives are few and far between, at least anything worth playing that is. And if I can play it on ps4 I'm not too then I'm not calling it exclusive.
You make it sound like Xbox has so much more games than Playstation, but, they have far fewer. Playstation has far more better 3rd party exclusives filling the gap too.
Chirping about Playstation when Xbox gets a game ever like 3 years worth talking about is idiotic. Would take the most recent FF, Gran Blue Relink and Stellar Blade over Xbox poor offerings any day of the week. Death Stranding 2 and Silent Hill look more interesting than HB2.
No, that's not what I'm saying. The point is this is such a petty non argument yet you sonyboys just take the bait and bitch regardless. Xbox is dying but you gotta keep claiming how great your corporate brand is.
Must be another zero news week
Then why feed the fire then? Lol. Hellblade 2 is barely a game. The 1st one we literally had a ton of Xbox fans call it a walking simulator when it was timed exclusive to Playstation. Now people are reiterating similar sentiments about the 2nd game when it's much of the same with minimal 'gameplay' and Xbox fans are offended.
Ironically the very same idiots chirping said that all Playstation games were just 'cinematic' experiences as a slight and now we got guys like you with the oh whoa is me like it wasn't expected?! Lol. Seriously idiotic
...now I remember why I hate gaming media, it's because 99.9% are like this article.
yeh, probably gonna have to wait for 'Death Stranding 2: On the beach', to get better environments and facial animation than this.
Yeh there was a lot going on in uncharted
A lot of moving parts
Explosions
Jumping from planes
You could say it was the more accomplished game. Hellblade looks like god of war, but without the sick fighting,
I'm the biggest PS fanboy there is, but I grabbed this on GamePass PC. I've never played a more photorealistic looking game. Whether that's "better" or "worse" is up to yall, but in that regard, this game is king.
Also proof that all hardware is capable of running the game. The only advantage the PC version has is framerate (for now).
Edit: I get where they are coming from with the list, but not including The Order is blasphemy.
I toon you seriously until I read that you're calling HB2 a game.
I also played it through GamePass, but on my Series X, and it's the most boring piece of shit I've ever spent 5 hours on.
Glad I'm done, the experience looks amazing, but so did Forspoken.
Forspoken was at least fun to play.
That's weird. This topic isn't about whether these games are good. Not sure why that would matter to you when the subject is about graphics.
Are you ok?
I am a long time PlayStation gamer, owned every console, have played every huge PS exclusive and I don't even agree with this. As of right now there is nothing that looks better than HB2 graphically and I'm only basing that on what I've seen online as I haven't even played it but can only imagine it looks even better when hands on with it. In time it will be surpassed, perhaps sooner than later with Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra not that far off and maybe with whatever Naughty Dog is working on but as for right now is concerned HB2 is the best looking game there is.
Doesn't change the fact that it got done. This isn't about whether the game is even good. It's simply about whether the graphics you've seen in a video game have ever looked better than it.
Bad games can be pretty.
What new benchmark was set with HB2?
Character rendering is very good in games like Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit: Become Human and I'd argue Horizon Forbidden West is better than those actual benchmarks set on PS3 and PS4. How do you beat what is already photoreal and convincing as live-action film? Well Death Stranding pushed those boundaries on PS4 using the same engine used to develop Horizon Zero Dawn. Subsurface scattering, pores, frenel, dynamic glossyness, sheen, and even deeper skin deformation was achieved on Decima for DS. Characters get goosebumps... on PS4! The PS5 version of DS doesn't have black bars, is rendered at a higher resolution, while also running at 60FPS with next to no pop-in across its expansive environments that allow for full time of day and weather changes on top of sweeping changes to the terrain during open-ended combat with BTs all in the game's large open world.
Environments? Well, as mentioned Death Stranding! As a bonus that game has equivalent or even better Character rendering than Horizon FW probably because DS targets a more photorealistic aesthetic; made with the same engine as HFW. I would say characters look more realistic in Death Stranding than in SS2HB.
Sky rendering? Driveclub, Ghost of Tsushima, RDR2, Ace Combat 7, MSFS (2020), HFW and Death Stranding all have better looking skies with volumetric clouds. I would argue GT7 has the best sky and Driveclub, Ghost of Tsushima and HFW's The Burning Shores have the best volumetric cloud rendering systems with much higher fidelity, stability and less ghosting in those games' cloud renderers.
Audio? As mentioned repeatedly, Death Stranding, and many more games including others listed but I'm sure there's still a character limit so I'll leave it at Death Stranding here. MADDER is a software path-traced sound processing system devised for Killzone, but made it's way into every game Guerrilla Games created and is of course a staple of the Decima Engine and its now accelerated with HW RT features of PCs equipped with requisite HW and PS5.
Lighting? Well... Death Stranding for much of the same reasons. Decima Engine was so well optimized back on PS3 that Guerrilla was already launching games with deferred rendering using hundreds of lights per scene and PBR all cramed into 256MB of PS3's VRAM rendering at a stable 720p30. It's also why games such as HFW and DS look as good as they do without RT.
What other aspects of the presentation could be brought up that SS2HB breaks ground on?
I can't think of anything. Let me know if you can and explain your reasoning.
I have officially played all these games and sorry for the fanboys but hellblade 2 is hands down better looking than any of those games.. and its not just the graphics or textures. the animations are better, the reflections are better, the draw distances... like there aren't draw distances... nothing pop ins. EVER. The animations and the rigs for all of the characters, not just the NPCs are unmatched. There are times you think you are watching a movie. Unreal 5 is hands down the best realtime engine out there right now and this is the first game released that really shows what it's capable of.
Even Digital Foundry said this game moves the bar. So I think I'll trust them before some butthurt fanboy. Why does everything have to turn into this or that. Even if you don't like the game, you can appreciate the sheer amount of effort and detail that went into and celebrate the efforts that went into one of the most visually stunning games ever made.
Did they explain how? No. Why not? Can't say, they're supposed to be the experts, right?
A game with this bad of resolution, big aas black bars and frame rate absolutely define the pinnacle of graphics for the Xbox series x and s.
Can or does? These are the same people who said Starfield couldn’t run at 60 due to so mayny systems running at one time 🙄
Only with settings turned down. I've seen some benchmarks which show the RTX 4090 and Intel Core i9 14900KS with 32GB of memory can't manage a locked 4K60 with DLAA at maxed out graphics.
If genuine, all other home PCs currently in existence would need to turn settings and resolutions down (DLSS counts as a resolution downgrade) to manage anything above 60FPS.
The edges in Hellblade 2 looks smeared or something. All those games look better on a PS5 and a $1.6k-2k PC, except Bloodborne of course, because it's not on PC
The developer deployed lots of post-processing effects by far the most impressive is the dynamic focus effect which simulates how a real camera might focus in on objects taking up the largest amount of real-estate on screen.
Bloodborne is sandpaper on my eyes. I’m seriously waiting for a remake or remaster before going back to it.
They could've kept some semblance of credibility by just listing 3 or replacing Bloodborne with Death Stranding: Director's Cut or even by including PS4 titles like Detroit: Become Human, which shockingly is a PS4 and PC only title; I thought it was re-released for PS5.
Sure it has small gameplay interactions but we finally got to see the series x get great looking game, I thought we'd never see ps5&xbox pushed hardware wise😌
Demon Souls and Ratchet and Clank, GT7, and etc. Do I put an emoji here or something? Not sure how that works.
Why more disagrees? Maybe for including Demon Souls. I would hope people agree R&C looks like a Pixar movie rendered in real time while GT7 is literally the best looking racing game currently on the market anywhere. I see Le Mans Ultimate on PC is shaping up well, but it's still pre-release so it doesn't count and in all actuality it's still behind GT7 visually speaking.
I know I shit on this game but that's because of my opinion on the shallow gameplay. The graphics are incredible and there is nothing that really comes close on console. TLoU 2 looks amazing and is probably the closest but Bloodborne, graphically, isn't even close.
I'm not sure why Bloodborne is even on the list. Isn't the Dark Souls PS5 exclusive remake better looking? That game still drops my jaw when I look at it. Clean.
That game looks amazing too. I feel like the author is a fan of the art direction of Bloodborne and doesn't realize that the graphics are incredibly dated. Still, Demon's Souls Remake looks much, much better.
I can agree with this. Dark souls remake is a very clean experience. I love it!
I've yet to play more than 30 minutes of HB2 but what I've seen is indeed impressive.
I've tried the game on XBSX, the graphics are fine but not at all groundbreaking or jaw dropping. I've said this numerous times that the game does not even run at 4k/60fps. The resolution is only 963p/1070p & most of the game is just walking, why it's not running at 4k/60fps on the so-called superior console is bewildering.
Look up footage of the PC version. That's the one I'm running (60fps/1440p).
Graphically, I'd say it's truly next gen.
I'd say it's truely now gen. We had this complete without any black bars and still way more gameplay on PS4 thanks to Death Stranding! Ironically, Death Stranding on PS4 was rendered at 1080p according to DF which is within 7% of the total pixel area of the lowest resolution bound that SS:HB2 runs at on Series X per DF (OP mentioned the resolutions). That only makes PS4 look stupidly powerful, but I suppose that shouldn't be surprising considering that Driveclub is still my personal pick for most completely realistic looking racing videogame. GT7 misses out because it's cloud simulation seems noticably less refined in a few conditions. I pick apart the visuals of games and compare them a lot. SS:HB2 is definitely top-shelf visually. I've not said otherwise, but what is it really breaking ground on? Nothing. That's my problem with the media hyping it up as a tech demo. Tech demos break ground, SS:HB2 just doesn't.
Definitely not Bloodborne. I love that game, having literally cleared it over 20 times at this point and hit the level cap.
It does not look better than Hellblade II visually. Not even close. It doesn't even run better than Hellblade II.
This article picks games that don't even have the same art style. None of them go for a photorealism aesthetic as Hellblade II does. All of those games look great, but let's get real here.
I haven't played Hellblade II, but I do have eyes that work very well. If we kick Bloodborne off the list, you're left with games that can be argued are more technically impressive (broader color palette, open, more "majestic" in its presentation, and at 60fps).
Hellblade II does sacrifice a lot to get where it is: linear, black bars, some frame rate hitches, short playtime. In exchange, the visuals are the ones to beat this generation so far and the animations are top notch. It really is this generation's The Order: 1886 (which also had outstanding visuals and great animations and physics).
"It really is this generation's The Order: 1886 (which also had outstanding visuals and great animations and physics)."
It really isn't. See The Order: 1886 did nice things with visuals. But later Death Stranding did even more... both games were on PS4 and Death Stranding didn't have black bars and rendered at native 1080p! Look at DS on the PS4 or PS5 and it's still jaw-dropping, especially that opening cinematic which just can't possibly be gameplay graphics. The rolling hills with those wispy clouds flowing over the side, that looked like a straight-up nature doc clip but is supposedly real-time on PS4 and then on PS5. Unbelievable detail that holds up to close scrutiny today in an open world game...
On last generation console HW!
But somehow the media is all excited about a corridor game that took 7 years to make with basically no interactivity at all with visuals that only just about compare favorably to a last-gen game? What us happening? Is this that "Xbox tax" I keep hearing about?
5 playstation games that look great but not as good as hellblade 2. I fixed it for you.
Man, Hellblade really destroying the minds of the Sony defense force. They can't handle it!
None...stupid to say there are any. It's literally using UE5 more than any other game so far by a wide margin. I'll say it again though, graphics like these cause you to have tradeoffs, let's see if anyone can make an open world or even a wide linear game with these graphics. As it is this is as impressive as any racing games graphics, for the genre.
I'd say a few on this list are more impressive for the whole package, but not solely for graphics.
That game came out already... it's called Death Stranding and initially released for PS4 then PC then PS5 and ridiculously enough iPhone (where it predictably looks absolutely terrible and yet it's still somewhat incredible that a phone can run that game for any amount of time without the battery exploding).
Dude this article is just for click bait and rile up Xbox fans and start the usual discussion between fanboys, Xbox this and playstation that, whatever. Everyone knows that the best graphics in gaming is LOTR: Gollum and it's a multi platform game 🤣
There are definitely better games than it, all on the list are, but they do not look better. Stylistically, you could argue that Ratchet and Clank, God of War etc are prettier, but technically nothing comes close to Hellblade 2 at the moment.
No, these games look great, and are better than Hellblade 2. The graphics are not nearly as detailed as HB though. Now that I am further in, all I can say is wow! The lighting in HB is outstanding.
Sigh. Another clickbait article. Nothing looks better than Hellblade 2 on console, literally nothing…but gameplay is king and that’s where HB2 lacks.
It his opinion, but mine opinion is that his article is trash , nothing come close to HB2 for now
This is a stupid bait article. I prefer PlayStation by far but this article is ridiculous.
On the one hand, saying Bloodborne looks better is just completely wrong. On the other hand, literally Uncharted 4 on the base PS4 is more visually appealing than Hellblade 2 on XSX.
The truth is Hellade 2 is a completely gorgeous feat and every XBOX owner should be cheering at such a beautiful game. And if it were on PS5, I would play it.
Simply a provocative bait article. Did not even click on it, the title was enough.
Yet I am SURE that many stockholders and kids who love their specific plastic box clicked, clicked, clicked.
"Games that look better than Hellblade 2
1. Rachet and clank"
Ohhhh. Ok so it's that type of opinion piece where the author is just trowing shit at a wall to see what people latch on to.
Did anybody actually cared about this? I'm glad Xbox players are satisfied with their UE5 5 hour game, but I'd rather have a good game than a good looking game any day of the week.
How did this get approved. One of the games listed is bloodborne. I haven't played Hellblade 2 as yet, but I feel sorry for the developers. They spent years making the game also being the first to fully take advantage of the UE5 engine but just because it is exclusive to Xbox, they have all this negativity coming their way.
This game has more negativity surrounding it than RedFall did last year. There are even nonsense articles like this written to ride the hate bandwagon for either clicks or to give make insecure fanboys feel better about their platform of choice. The former is more likely.
And yet no modern game can compare to the aesthetics of N64/PS1 games. All these games using U5, they'll all look the same by the end of this gen.
