That argument is for big budget games. This is not sustainable on big budget games. You have to keep making them so the problem only gets worse with a finite number of possible subscribers that does not exponentially get bigger.

The benefit for a multiplatform company to do that right now is that it is a safety net. New IP is a risk so that way you are sure to get some good money and make profit selling on others platforms.

Everybody knows that the only profitable model is the one where ppl need to pay big buck in order to suport the dev.
A good game will always be profitable because ppl always buys great games

The big benefit they claim - 'an instant community' is not really the huge boon they make it out to be.

Yes a lot of GP subscribers will jump on it because its a new game and they get it 'for free'. However that community is also extremely fickle and will just move onto something else in a heartbeat so your community just evaporates.

Overall GP can easily be a drag on new franchises as people play for short periods but fail to engage fully with the product. This applies double to a high difficulty souls-like title. If people spend money on something, they are FAR more likely to engage with it and hopefully grow to really like it.

So if we run this to its conclusion to a world of no longer buying retail games, you essentially have Microsoft with their store front which probably shows about handful of games and they are essentially picking the winners and losers and how the money is distributed among them in a like it or lump fashion. I don't consider myself the biggest capitalist but it is amazing how many people who think they are pro capitalism just want for socialized entertainment were they really have no say or control on what is being fed to them. It didn't really want to make a political point out of it but it is pretty damn dystopian.
