Five hours of FF16 was my first time playing Final Fantasy, and it was epic

I played before launch, but I've never played a Final Fantasy game before. Here's what I thought of the gameplay preview.

Ironically, given that you had a blast playing 16, you would most likely hate every other game in the series.

sparky77377d ago

Yep this game will be great for non final fantasy fans. But it will likely lose it's original fanbase on it.

potatoseal377d ago

Just stop. Original FF fans will be fine with it

Flawlessmic377d ago

Wrongggg but I bet ud like for that to happen

Shadowsteal377d ago (Edited 377d ago )

I'm sure it will be more of a Final Fantasy game than FF15 could've dreamed to be.

-Foxtrot377d ago

I’ll give it a shot as a die hard FF fan but the saving grace for me is that it looks better than FF13 and FF15

Even if it’s amazing, would I want to see the franchise go down this path for future games? God no but I’ll enjoy this one for what it is.

Hopefully one day they’ll go back to turn based or some form of it. It will sell regardless so that worry about it not selling if it was is bullshit

goldwyncq377d ago

What a dumb generalization. Just so you know, FF hasn't been traditionally turn-based since X and that was over twenty years ago.

MrNinosan377d ago

I've been a hardcore fan of Final Fantasy since Final Fantasy IV, and FFXVI is my most anticipated game this year by far.
I doubt SE will lose the original fanbase, of course some will fall off, but I'm certain the majority will still be around.

Vengeance1138377d ago

If the "original fanbase" gets lost on it then they aren't really fans are they? Can't handle an evolution of gameplay? Want nothing to move forward always remain stuck in the past?
You aren't a real fan.

SeTTriP377d ago

I'm ff original fanbase and I haven't been this excited for ff in forever it seems like.

It does look epic.

LiViNgLeGaCY377d ago

Nope. I've been playing FF since the SNES days, and I'm absolutely pumped for this game.

Elda377d ago

Nope. I have been playing FF for almost 30 years & I can't wait to play FFXVI!!

andy85377d ago (Edited 377d ago )

I think it looks great and I've been a fan of FF for 26 years. Currently on #5 out of 6 of the Pixel Remaster.

LordoftheCritics377d ago

You guys are so lucky to have already played the game.

lucian229377d ago

false, i've been playing ff for decades and im more excited than i have been in a long time. stop making stuff up

lio_convoy377d ago

OG fan here. Looking forward to the demo to try the new systems out for myself!

Epicor377d ago

OG fans are long gone already. FF has been losing it ever after FFX. I'm happy them experimenting something completely new because FF12 - FF15 haven't felt as good as the previous entries. It's about time to change direction.

I'm a old school ff fan and I am absolutely hangingggggg for this game, it's looks proper epicccc!!

Only a month or so to go, bring it on!!!!

sinspirit377d ago

I like the variety between FF games but I do still wish for a modern AAA turn based that enables some different gameplay abilities we couldn't have in realtime combat. Also more control of multiple units rather than mostly one.

CrimsonWing69377d ago

I dunno, I’m a massive FF fan, prefer 6-9 and I’ve played them all. Working on platinuming every FF pixel remaster game, and I’m incredibly excited for 16. I don’t see just because the battle system is drastically different from turn-based that you can’t enjoy it, if you’re an old-school fan.

SeTTriP377d ago

Ppl hate on me when I say 9 was the last great ff.it did absolutely everything from side quest to mini games.

Flawlessmic377d ago

Ffx is right up there for me aswell, 10 and 9 are my favourites.

Sucks to hear x never gets any love though, I loved it so much, iv replayed that game sooo many times.

P_Bomb377d ago

Loving the Pixel Remaster set! LivingLegacy and I have platinumed a few too, Super hyped for FFXVI as well.

Vx_377d ago

Why? this looks like FF14.. but more refine and solid with better combat system.. and FF14 is one of the most successful FF ever

Flewid638377d ago (Edited 377d ago )

Its impossible for people to like both?

Pretty sure FFXV and FF7-Remake also had real-time combat.

Shane Kim377d ago

And those are the best selling ones.

Pedantic91377d ago

I find it sad that you're having a very hard time moving on from the franchise that stopped catering to you for over a decade ago.

VivaLaManual377d ago

Lots of reviewers are already saying that it feels like a FF game. Combat isn't the only thing that makes an FF game an FF game.

DarXyde377d ago

I do think that if you've never played Final Fantasy, there's a chance this is not what fans are looking for. To me, it looks great and I'm excited to play it.

"Most likely hate" the other games? Not sure about that. Just because there's little overlap in gameplay style doesn't mean people cannot like what feels like two semi-distinct genres.

Chard377d ago (Edited 377d ago )

Turn based combat was never the main attraction of FF for me. I won’t miss it any more than I miss random battles (which I don’t miss at all)

Pretty unbelievable that someone calling themselves videogamer has never played a final fantasy.

Storm23377d ago

I have played almost every big Playstation release since the PS2 days (did play quite a few PS1 as well), but I have also have never played a Final Fantasy. I don't like Japanese art styles very much and not a big RPG guy. But I am definitely a videogamer with hundreds of games in my collection. Not every gamer is into every type of game. Happy gaming!

Terry_B377d ago

Its sad..but the most people that call themselfes gamers these days are rarely playing anything that is not named minecraft, fortnite, valorant, call of duty, league of legends or fifa :(

badz149377d ago

dude, I'm a gamer since the 90's, started gaming with the NES. I've tried FF before but turn base just doesn't do it for me.

I don't know about ''great'' rpg.

Most epic fight sequences and presentation? Yes

Worst side quests ever? Yes
Boring traversal? Yes
Empty worlds? Yes
Demo is infinitely more mature than the actual game? Yes
FF16=MMO side quests + Devil May Cry Lite

Alos8840d ago

I'd give it the great part, it's the RPG part I find dubious.

EternalTitan40d ago

There is no Roleplaying/decision making in this game.
No crafting there isnt even character builds because just like Dante/Bayonetta Clive has all skills and loadouts available to him.

CrimsonWing6939d ago (Edited 39d ago )

What do you mean there’s no role playing? Also, I’m fairly certain I made builds with Eikon abilities and I’ve gone to the blacksmiths to literally select craft weapons and gear. 🤷‍♂️

EternalTitan36d ago

How many 'builds' can you make?
Weapons and gear only increase numbers. Tell me about elemental weaknesses and status.

CrimsonWing6936d ago (Edited 36d ago )

@EternalTitan

Elemental weakness isn’t an RPG defining end-all-be all element.

What statuses are you asking about? F*cking status buffs and debuffs? You talking about stats that increase with gear crafting? Because all that’s present in the game.

The fact that you even admit there’s builds and RPG elements contradicts your claim. No matter how limited they may be, they exist in the game, therefore it is an RPG. I think the correct critique is instead of claiming it’s “not an RPG” you really mean to say it’s an RPG not as in-depth as it’s contemporaries. Regardless, it’s an RPG nonetheless even without “elemental weakness” playing in combat.

EternalTitan35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

@CrimsonWing69
"Elemental weakness isn’t an RPG defining end-all-be all element"
Why not?
Where is your source for this?

CrimsonWing6935d ago

@EternalTitan

So you’re telling me if a game has all the elements and mechanics of an RPG except elemental weakness exploits in combat that they’re not an RPG?

C’mon man, how about you show me where it says an RPG must have elemental weakness mechanics?

Let’s be honest, this isn’t a “great” RPG. I am in the camp that it IS an RPG, no DMC game I’ve played is designed like this… but in terms of being a great RPG… well, I much prefer the RE-Trilogy over this.

That being said, I do think the DLCs have probably the best boss battles I’ve played in a game. Omega was crazy and the battle theme just amplified that for me. In the other hand, I’m struggling to think of a game that has a boss battle as great as Leviathan. Like, I played it on FF mode and it was sooooo intense and just a gorgeous and fun experience. The music was also top notch!

However, I really disliked most of everything of FF16. The Benedikta arc was fantastic, but after that the game was boring and a slog to get through. I think the boss battles were the best parts, but also inconsistent for me. Bahamut was peak for the base game, but everything else didn’t surpass that experience until you play the DLC bosses.

VersusDMC40d ago

The 2 DLC's were great. 2 new eikon ability sets (leviathan and...) and a survival/bloody palace mode with Rising Tide were great as well.

repsahj39d ago

The Base game is already great for me IMHO and the 2 DLC will even make it better.
