Final Fantasy XVI Is Already Forgetting What Made FFVII Remake So Great

Final Fantasy XVI won’t be including a specific element that helped make both Final Fantasy XVI Remake and the original game so memorable.

Just because it's doing something different, doesn't mean it's forgetting
that's like saying they forget what made 14 so great because it's not online

Obscure_Observer448d ago (Edited 448d ago )

The author is right. Like it or not, characters development is a very important aspect of any memorable RPG game.

That´s what many younger Playstation gamers are about to found out in KOTOR Remake, for instance, soon.

The article is not about doom and gloom for FFXVI but an interesting view on what gamers should expect from a game which is not focused on party characters growth/development.

Redemption-64448d ago

Maybe you don't know this, but not all games have to do things the same way to build characters development. You don't have to play as, Thor, Brok, Sindri, or any of the squad members in Mass effect to have great character development.

But this is a Playstation exclusive, so everyone here knows where you stand

jambola448d ago

It's subjective, it's not a factual topic
Different games can do different things

Obscure_Observer448d ago

@Redemption-64

This is not just about playable characters, dude. This is more about NPC´s growth, development and relationships as a solid team throughout the game. Just like Mass Effect that you mentioned.

Redemption-64448d ago

@Obscure_Observer

Seriously stop embarrassing yourself and actually play some games. The game is not even out yet and you are clearly far too narrow minded. There are literally countless ways to build characters development, none of which requires you to play as said characters or be constantly with you. Seriously how don't you know this? There is no single way to do NPC growth, maybe if you actually played different games you would know that.

Obscure_Observer448d ago

@Redemption-64

"There is no single way to do NPC growth, maybe if you actually played different games you would know that."

Nobody said that, that´s you making sh!t up. The article is pretty clear and the author pointed out that it will be harder (HARDER not IMPOSSIBLE) for FFXVI´s developers to deliver a memorable game once the only permanent companion will be Clive´s dog, Torgal. Nothing more, nothing less.

Didn't bother reading the article. Sounds to me like someone's stuck in the past and afraid of change. Typical fanBOI article. Hard pass.

jznrpg449d ago

Just looking for something to complain about for clicks

goldwyncq449d ago

It's about not having controllable party members, which is a valid criticism for a FF game.

Eonjay449d ago

That's not what a Final Fantasy game is.

jambola449d ago

And thats fair
But when you come at it from a "they must have forgotten it's good" way
It just looks ridiculous and condescending and click baity

CrimsonIdol449d ago

"That's not what a Final Fantasy game is."
...isn't it? I thought a party based RPG was exactly what Final Fantasy is (at least the mainline ones).

SurgicalMenace449d ago

What about Crisis Core, Dirge, Type-0, etc? Just a few instances where there were solo members in the FF universe.

goldwyncq449d ago

^ This is a mainline FF game. Even FFXV which didn't have it at first later added it as a patch. I hope XVI does the same.

Bobertt448d ago

It's not so much about not having them as he is thinking the story will be worse since it doesn't have multiple main characters to carry it. But if anything the story looked great from the early trailers and there are tons of games that have a single main character and have good stories.

porkChop448d ago

It's valid criticism though. The author isn't saying FFXVI will be bad or anything, but it's missing a key ingredient that's been a part of every mainline FF game. A proper party of characters. Not necessarily that they need to be playable. But in FFXVI your companions aren't permanent. They come into the story for a little bit and then leave when someone new comes in to take their place.

That means the bulk of the narrative and character development will potentially have to revolve solely around Clive. In FF games each character develops naturally over the course of the story. They're there to bring depth and help both carry and move the plot forward. Removing the traditional party element means the supporting cast has significantly less ability to be fleshed out and developed naturally. So it *could* result in more flat, one dimensional characters. Something that FF has never been known for.

Obviously we'll have to see once the game comes out but it's an entirely valid concern.

Lets be honest theres nothing wrong with the past though. The best ff games to this day are there. With ff6 7 8 and 9, to this day have not been topped.

''Forgetting''

More like ''chose''

Another stuck in the past nostalgia ridden article.

jambola449d ago

No no
Only the writer knows what's good
So anyone doing something different just wasn't smart enough to realize this

jznrpg449d ago (Edited 449d ago )

FF16 is a different game . It’s not FF7R. They can both exist and be good . Journos complain a sequel doesn’t do anything different than the previous game even when continuing a story . Now they complain a game isn’t as similar as another one . Just seems like “journalists” looking for something complain about

We also get Rebirth this year. Win win.

The way it was handled was so dumb. One shots in melee...your teammates are to ostupid to get away from its attack. So you most often end up alone in a certain fight.

Needing an accessory to keep a.i from dying and only one of them isnt great.

I don't know about ''great'' rpg.

Most epic fight sequences and presentation? Yes

Worst side quests ever? Yes
Boring traversal? Yes
Empty worlds? Yes
Demo is infinitely more mature than the actual game? Yes
FF16=MMO side quests + Devil May Cry Lite

Alos8840d ago

I'd give it the great part, it's the RPG part I find dubious.

EternalTitan40d ago

There is no Roleplaying/decision making in this game.
No crafting there isnt even character builds because just like Dante/Bayonetta Clive has all skills and loadouts available to him.

CrimsonWing6939d ago (Edited 39d ago )

What do you mean there’s no role playing? Also, I’m fairly certain I made builds with Eikon abilities and I’ve gone to the blacksmiths to literally select craft weapons and gear. 🤷‍♂️

EternalTitan36d ago

How many 'builds' can you make?
Weapons and gear only increase numbers. Tell me about elemental weaknesses and status.

CrimsonWing6936d ago (Edited 36d ago )

@EternalTitan

Elemental weakness isn’t an RPG defining end-all-be all element.

What statuses are you asking about? F*cking status buffs and debuffs? You talking about stats that increase with gear crafting? Because all that’s present in the game.

The fact that you even admit there’s builds and RPG elements contradicts your claim. No matter how limited they may be, they exist in the game, therefore it is an RPG. I think the correct critique is instead of claiming it’s “not an RPG” you really mean to say it’s an RPG not as in-depth as it’s contemporaries. Regardless, it’s an RPG nonetheless even without “elemental weakness” playing in combat.

EternalTitan35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

@CrimsonWing69
"Elemental weakness isn’t an RPG defining end-all-be all element"
Why not?
Where is your source for this?

CrimsonWing6935d ago

@EternalTitan

So you’re telling me if a game has all the elements and mechanics of an RPG except elemental weakness exploits in combat that they’re not an RPG?

C’mon man, how about you show me where it says an RPG must have elemental weakness mechanics?

Let’s be honest, this isn’t a “great” RPG. I am in the camp that it IS an RPG, no DMC game I’ve played is designed like this… but in terms of being a great RPG… well, I much prefer the RE-Trilogy over this.

That being said, I do think the DLCs have probably the best boss battles I’ve played in a game. Omega was crazy and the battle theme just amplified that for me. In the other hand, I’m struggling to think of a game that has a boss battle as great as Leviathan. Like, I played it on FF mode and it was sooooo intense and just a gorgeous and fun experience. The music was also top notch!

However, I really disliked most of everything of FF16. The Benedikta arc was fantastic, but after that the game was boring and a slog to get through. I think the boss battles were the best parts, but also inconsistent for me. Bahamut was peak for the base game, but everything else didn’t surpass that experience until you play the DLC bosses.

VersusDMC40d ago

The 2 DLC's were great. 2 new eikon ability sets (leviathan and...) and a survival/bloody palace mode with Rising Tide were great as well.

repsahj40d ago

The Base game is already great for me IMHO and the 2 DLC will even make it better.
