Neocrisis: Which Metal Gear Solid game was the best?

Really, MGS1, 3 and 4 are all exceptionnal

My favorite is MGS3 by a microscopic margin, and second place is a tie between MGS1 and MGS4. Sometimes, MGS4 takes the first place in my mind, sometimes it's MGS1, so they're pretty much all equal.

Sure the story in MGS4 wasn't as good as MGS1 and MGS3, but for me, it had 2 of the most ''epic moments'' of the series (microwave corridor and the ending after the credits). Psycho Mantis's comeback and the return to Shadow Moses were awesome too.

Anyway, I prefer seeing the Metal Gear franchise as a whole rather than separate games. They're all connected and they all contribute to make the others more awesome. Take Big Boss, for example : if you didn't learn about his story through MGS3, MGS4's ending wouldn't be as epic.

MGS4 was fantastic and Drebin was a great addition but why do I get the feeling that the people voting for MGS4 are just blinded by the amazing graphics and Raiden's awesomeness? I mean sure the story was great as usual and the bosses were amazing to look at but HAVE YOU PLAYED SNAKE EATER?

Ghost of Sparta...SPOILER! I have played MGS4 through countless times but some here may have not.

OT, I think MGS3 is the most underrated title in the group. It came at the end of a generation and is thus overlooked when in fact it tells the birth of the entire MG series. Either way, people that did not play the original titles are certainly missing out when the final bomb drop occurs in MGS4.

It doesn't do to go back and play them later AFTER having played MGS4. You will never, never get that same view of "Holy crap, so that is what has really been happening."

It's like watching Star Wars Episode 1, then 2, then 3. And then watching Star Wars Episode 4, 5, and 6. Although that is chronologically correct, if you do that you don't get the "Holy crap" moment in The Empire Strikes Back.

Same here. You need to play the titles in order of release. If you can't do that (that is you do not play Metal Gear or Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake), at least play MGS1, 2, 3 and then 4. For those not aware, beating MGS3 in MGS3 Subsistence, you get access to the original first two titles.

I may be biased because I never played MGS3 * runs away * and 4 was the most recent, but the gameplay, the cutscenes, the graphics, the twists....man that was a great game. I put it in my top five of all time.

Ghost I agree, Mgs3 just fell right, and the boss battles were epic. I remember playing the end and using the microphone to listen to where he was at. When I zoomed out of first person view the End was right behind me, it csared the mess out of me.

MGS1 had the best characters and bosses that you actually felt for. And maybe even the best story. It definately had my favorite Metal Gear character in the Ninja.

MGS3 had great characters in The Boss, future Big Boss, and a young Ocelot. It also had a great, innovative boss battle in The End (but the boss battles against The Fear, The Pain, The Fury, Ocelot, and Volgen while good to great, weren't that "OMG!! I can't believe that I'm actually playing this!" like a certain Act 4 battle in MGS4).

MGS4 has the best game play and player-friendly controls (an insanely huge plus considering most people loved MGS1 but quit the series after being turned off MGS2's controls).

MGS4 also the IMMENSE FAN-SERVICE. Others can come along for the ride, but at it's heart - it is a game that is for MGS fans. With so many games trying to appeal to a wider audience for more profit, Hideo Kojima seemed like he said...

"Screw it. Maybe next time I'll make a game that tries to cater to everyone, but this game is my Thank You to all of the loyal Solid fans that have been with me through the prior three games. They deserve this."

And that's all on top off, MGS4 amazing boss battles. I'd put MGS4's boss battles up against MGS3's, with Crying Wolf's and The End's battles going head to head... especially when you are battling Crying Wolf during your "No Alerts".

And nothing can top the "OHHH SH!T!!!" moments in MGS4, but as Morgan said above the other games do set those moments up.

That's what places this series in must-play, genius status. Every single one is amazing and they all matter to the story. Missing one, f's everything all up. If you haven't played the earlier ones yet, go get MGS: Essentials now!

it is about time critics started to compare games of true caliber i.e. metal gear vs metal gear rather than comparing Metal gear titles with halo(s) and gears(s).

Thought each of the mgs titles had their strengths and weaknesses the

Man, you guys really liked MGS3 that much. I really hated the camouflage, the reticulated python and the utter tediousness of almost everything in the game. I don't have the words to say how much I hated the camouflage mechanic. The story must have been great, I cannot attest as I had a bootleg copy and my chip stopped working, but I refused to buy it(see above). I really enjoyed MGS2 as the graphical and gameplay leap was equal to MGS4 and I wasn't going to buy MGS4 until I saw the Octocamo.

MGS1 was the best becaause that game, Tenchu and Tomb Raider2 brought me back to gaming.

MGS1 : Bosses, setting, story, dialogues (best codec in the series), characters (Gray Fox!), innovation (using the cigar to see lazers was real genius)

MGS2 : Stealth gameplay (indoors), HF Blade (They should make a whole game just for that sword!), extras (VR missions, skateboard, etc...)

MGS3 : Story, stealth and survival gameplay (outdoors), Bosses, ending, Characters (Big Boss and The Boss, their relationship, etc), those ''MGS'' moments (fowarding your PS2's clock to kill The End), humour.

MGS4 : Overall gameplay (especially weapons), Epic moments, fan servive, ending, emotion (microwave corridor was simply stunning)

And the stunning music in every single one of them

When I played 4, I couldn't help but think about all of the things that were missing from the previous installment, such as the hunting for food, treating your own individual wounds in a very detailed manner, and picking the right camo for the right moments(Octocamo is for the lazy if you ask me. Cool idea, felt like a step back, however). For that matter, I also don't like the way you acquire weapons and ammunition in 4 either, completely nullifies the sense of roughing it on your own in enemy territory.

Snake really had one Hell of an arduous journey in that one too, and the characters, setting, and style were unforgettable. I recently played it, and to be honest I think it holds up remarkably well to many current generation games. Hell, I think it looks better than a fair share of them for that matter.

Everything about the game was satisfying, and it was also longer than 4 was, and the cutscenes were done much better as well.

Almost exactly how i feel. I think the story and cutscenes were better in MGS4 than MGS3. But overall Snake Eater takes it. Surviving in the woods, treating your injuries, the relationship of Big Boss and The Boss. Don't even get me started on the Boss battles. Best compilation of bosses assembled in one game.

Playing through MGS4 i missed the codecs, the kojima charm in the game and the boss fights. The gameplay didn't fell nearly as deep and i think the pysche gauge could have been implemented deeper. I didn't like that you could buy guns and ammo at will either. MGS3 is the best MGS game in my opinion. Not that MGS4 is a bad game by any means. But it's hard to top one of the best games of all time in my opinion.

It felt like he was trying to appeal too much to the fans by offering conclusions and answers to everything... even the things that don't need answers.

Gameplay-wise, he was appealing too much to the mainstream gamers. MGS4 just doesn't feel as hardcore as MGS3.

I have no problems with applying a more mainstream control, but he should still implement gameplay systems that brings more depth to the game.

MGS4 would have been perfect if not for these two things... in my opinion.

But as it stands, I feel MGS3 is the best overall out of the series and it did not stray too far away from its purpose. It also felt very focused like MGS1, and portrayed the 1960's spy theme pretty well. We also got to see young Revolver Ocelot, and from then on, I knew Ocelot was a good guy deep down. ^_^

Personally I see the games as a whole rather than a set. They all add together to form one bigger picture. As pieces of art in my eyes they should be viewed singularly as one body.

I'd have to agree with the majority and say that MGS Snake Eater was the best of them all. The bosses were brilliant (took me nearly 2 hours to beat The End the first time). Yet the final battle with The Boss did give me the ol lump in the throat. MGS 1 and 2 were good as 1 was ground breaking and 2 carried on athe franchise in a solid direction (no pun intended). However there was something about MGS4 that was exceptional. Sure the visuals were great but the surprises which would make you say, "Damn, it all makes sense now" were so many. The story to me did not have to be elaborate as this was made to tie up loose ends. The microwave scene was BEAUTIFUL. I know I'm not the only guy who felt like crying. I cursed that sappy music as I fought back those tears. But in my books it goes in the order of MGS Snake Eater, MGS 4/MGS 1, and finally MGS 2. This is my own humble opinion. Snake will be missed.

MGS 3. Every frigging moment in that game was EPIC!!!! The jungle setting was amazing. Big Boss owned. The boss fights ruled. MGS 3 was the best.

Gotta go with 3 as the best for sure. The music, the characters, the boss fights, the 2nd opening after the failed mission, the freaking twist at the end! Never thought a Metal Gear game would blow my mind as much as the first one but 3 took me by surprise and did just that.

I think my main gripe with 4 was you didn't feel like your really on a mission like in 1 and 3. They broke it up into the acts which really messed up the immersion. But it gave more variety to the environments and put you on a roller coaster ride plus it had the best controls and gameplay of the series. 2 had the best environments (The tanker was perfect game design) and easter eggs, but the bosses were the worst and the story was my least favorite.

i LOVED the story in MGS3.
i also loved the visuals, cutscenes, the final boss battle was, in a word, "gutwrenching," but also beautiful.
i loved the eating and healing mechanic.

i think MGS1 has the best villains, however. the villains in MGS3 are next, and the villains in MGS4 are third. the villains in MGS2 are pretty lame, although Vamp becomes a badass in MGS4.

MGS1 will always have a special place in my heart, but i think MGS3 is the pinnacle of what the series can be (the cutscene/story/info was very well maintained. MGS4 had a LOT to wrap up, so i understand the often grandiose length of the cutscenes, but MGS3 perfected the length/action quotient).

if they were to remake Metal Gear Solid 3 with the Metal Gear Solid 4 engine, it would be one of the best games of all time.

as it stands, MGS4 IS also one of the best games of all time, but i'd put Snake Eater above it.

as an aside, even though MGS2 is the weakest of the series with it's bait and switch, after beating MGS4, and seeing how it all ties together, the narrative in MGS2 isn't as completely bat sh*t crazy as it initially seemed. the biggest problem that remains with MGS2, is that the Big Shell just wasn't a compelling location.

Shadow Moses was compelling.
The Tanker in MGS2's first half was compelling.
The Jungle in MGS3 was very compelling.
The various locations throughout MGS4 are extremely varied and compelling.

the Big Shell is just DULL.

if they were to remake MGS2; extend the tanker sequence, and completely re-design the Big Shell (get rid of the bland, repetitive environments. it would be cooler if the Big Shell was a massive oil rig, with all sorts of machines and areas that you'd expect to be present when they're trying to clean up an oil spill).

the gameplay improvements that MGS2 added to the series over MGS1 are greatly appreciated, and extended to the current iterations, but Kojima Productions could have done LOADS better with the Big Shell's design.

i love the series, and it's one of my favorite gaming series of all time. even Kojima's WEAKEST is better than most other studios best efforts. at least MGS1, 3, and 4 make up for 2's shortcomings. and in FORCE.

That really bothers me considering MGS2 was the first game to really show how a game can rival a movie in terms of visuals and storytelling. People tend to look down on it because of Raiden; while I may agree that might have been a mistake, the game was still amazing. Not to mention MGS2 set up the awesome conclusion for MGS4; with plenty of plot twists all the way until the end.

Considering I don't comment on this site often; MGS is just too amazing to voice my opinion on this. As far as bosses MGS3 takes the cake, as far as music MSG1 has a classic soundtrack that will last a lifetime, but MGS4 I felt took that award from the very moment you start up the disc. Story-line is difficult to say, but I think MSG4 was the weakest out of three, but had the best game-play. I would say the list should be...

1. MGS1- Started the whole badass character Snake and the epic story.
2. MGS2- A completely worthy sequel that took everything from MGS1(Minus the Snake) and made it so much better. In my opinion it showed games could be taken seriously.
3. MGS4- Maybe because it recently came out this year, and its still fresh in my memory, but the soundtrack, visuals, and gameplay blew me away. While it has the weakest story-wise in the series it was still damn good, and ended the series right.
4. MGS3- A lot of people love this game, but just something about the game just didn't stick with me as much as the top 3. The bosses was the standout and I loved the story, but it really didn't change that much game-play wise, and I felt like it kind of played it safe; in a amazing sort of way.

Actually i quite loved MGS2. I liked the character Raiden back then. The codecs between him and Rose i could understand. Sometimes when you love someone and you try to get them to open up to you it takes a long time and it's hard to do. I could correlate with that. I loved the philosophical stuff at the end of MGS2. Alot of people didn't like it but i personally loved it. Information flow and how people can try to manipulate it was a great thing to touch upon. Raiden as a character surpressed everything he went through as a kid. He finally embraced it in MGS4.

I loved MGS3. My favorite in the entire series. The gameplay. The story. The characters. Just simply amazing.

MGS4 the gameplay didn't do enough for me. It was just a simple refinement with western controls that made it play more like a shooter. I didn't like that. Loved the story and how everything was explained. Loved the subtle hints about Blackwater and PMC's in general. Brilliant on execution on wrapping up the entire story. The characters their attachment to people etc. I unforunately never played the original........ Yet.

but the truth about the game is that the latter half just wasn't very well designed.

in fact, it was BORING.

now, the story element of MGS2 was good. it got a little muddled near the end, but overall, it was a intriguing ride that kept you interested in what was going to happen.

i got over the Raiden bait and switch rather quickly when playing MGS2 for the first time, especially once Snake appeared as Plisken. it was Rose that irritated me to no end in MGS2.

the boss battles weren't as classic as the original.

despite Kojima's obvious growth as a game director (MGS2 single handely JUSTIFIED the existence of the PS2, and Sony's claims of PS2 graphical prowess, much like how MGS4 did the same for the PS3), the design of the Big Shell was, honestly, very uninspired.

compared to the other three games, MGS2 is the weakest. but just because it is the weakest, doesn't mean it's not a great game. it's just the other Metal Gears are SO GREAT, that MGS2 seems to pale in comparison.

i own all four titles. i love all four titles, but i feel 3, 4, and 1 are the best in terms of their overall marriage of visuals, excellent game design, story and drama.

i can't let nostalgia get in the way of my judgment. MGS made me a fan of the series, but looking at the gameplay improvements added in MGS2, MGS3, and MGS4, i just can't say it's the best in the series anymore.

i feel it has the best bosses (with part 3 next, then part 4, then part 2), but outside of nostalgia, it's not as good as the others (i just CAN'T let the awesome, innovative Psycho Mantis battle cloud my reason...must...resist...GAH! *head asplode!*)

i feel 3 has the stronger narrative.
i feel 4 has the stronger emotional resonance (the end of Act 3 was so powerful i had to take a break before moving onto act 4. the end of Act 4 was just as dramatic. the "Microwave Corridor" scene is one of the most intense, gripping moments i've experienced in a video game). the deconstruction of Snake in MGS4 is excellent. i've NEVER seen a hero go through so much personal anguish in his quest as Snake does in MGS4.
i feel that MGS2 is buoyed by the revelations in MGS4. my appreciation of MGS2 and it's story increased AFTER playing Part 4, and getting the whole picture.

i think MGS2 should be more appreciated for being a somewhat successful experiment of controlling digital information.

the whole point of the MGS2 story, to me, was to illustrate how the control of digital information can be a powerful tool. even the PR campaign for MGS2 was illustrating the theme of the game: for YEARS, we all thought that Snake was the main protagonist in MGS2. we were shown trailers, screens, and more on the net showcasing Snake fighting some of the later bosses, and battling in the Big Shell. this was NOT the case. Konami had controlled the information we received concerning MGS2.

i think that MGS2 was also an experiment in storytelling. i think Kojima learned a lot about playing with multiple perspectives, lots of metaphorical storytelling, and attempting to re-interpret the previous game in a new way.

Metal Gear Solid 1 is almost an exact re-interpretation of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. some of the characters, themes, and situations are almost direct copies of those original MSX games.

MGS3 and MGS4 are probably the only real Metal Gears that don't rip off the older ones. lol.

i think people are too hard on MGS2, but my own personal opinion is that, when viewed as a whole (gameplay, graphics, narrative, design, etc), it is not as good as the other three Metal Gear Solids. but that's just me.

i don't think there's a right or wrong as to which one SHOULD be your favorite. if it's 2, then it's 2. if it's 3, then it's 3.

For the simple fact that NO game had EVER accomplished what that game had at the time of its release. The way it drew you in with its interactive storyline and deep character design was enough to elevate it to one of the greatest games of all time.

So amazing, plus the soundtrack was really well orchestrated, even to this very day. I still listen to the MGS soundtrack and get shivers on how meticulous the songwriting is.

MGS1 was truly next-gen for a PS1 game.

Even now, 99% of games can't even compare to the cutscenes, storytelling, setting, mood, soundtrack, voice acting, etc that MGS1 had already achieved way back on the Playstation 1.

The reason why MGS4 is right after MGS1 is as follows:

MGS1 is my favorite game of all time. Everything about this game was perfect and still shines besides the outdated graphics of course. However, one thing MGS2 and MGS3 failed to bring back the characters that I loved from MGS1(because of the plot) which were all featured in MGS4 including characters from MGS3 and MGS2. Man MGS4 had everything a Metal Gear fan would want. It was nearly perfect. It would've been even better if Kojima and Konami wouldn't have removed the Main Theme music of Metal Gear Solid. Otherwise, the best series I have played in gaming.

All the other games are extremely similar to it. MGS 1 had the best story. The sequels bow down to the first one.

When MGS3 came out I didn't watch any trailers before I didn't know anything about the story of the game and after I played it it was like huge bomb in every moment of the game. who miss the franchise of MGS is really miss the meaning of enjoyments of video game.

I never new anything about any of the games and I've played all of them pretty much as soon as they came out. The Metal Gear Solis series as a whole is FTW!!!!!

its hard to say but i love MGS1 because it was the first game in the series i played on PSX......

MGS3 has spacial memory in my mind i love every thing in the game but i realy hated that solid snake is not the hero ( 1960 era )...

MGS4 almost has every thing you want to do in realy world (war world)...solid snake is weak but beauty and the beast made the game brilliant....i love this part of the series from all my heart....
