Xbox 360: Jasper has arrived

New 65 mm GPU is officially confirmed- with pictures to boot.

Edit: Jasper comes with built in 256 MB of internal flash. The memory card that used to come with the Arcade is taken out as a result. Unknown if this applies for Elites and Pros. NXE comes preinstalled on a Jasper 360 as well.

Jasper is the new chipset which lowers heat and power consumption by using a lower manufacturing process (size of and space between transistors gets smaller) and because the Xbox 360 is prone to the Red Ring of Death which is primarily caused by too much heat, people are jumping at this Jasper model for the lower chances that it will break.

How do you know that the RROD still exists? I know that people with older consoles sometimes have their consoles fail, but I don't know anybody with a console bought in the last year that has had one fail. I do know that a lot of people on the internet lie and pretend that they have a 360 that has failed on them 5 times, but those reports aren't reliable. If the problem hasn't already been mostly eliminated with the Falcon chipset, there is a very good chance that the 65nm Jasper units will.

Traveler, the RROD still exists. Stop with that nonsense of 'I know a friend who didn't have it and his friend didn't have it'. It's true that all electronics have a chance of breaking but I have never heard of a product breaking down so much like the 360.

I'm not a blind consumer. I have heard and seen with my own eyes that the RROD is very real and it still exists.

I love my 360 and no doubt the RROD does still exist, but Jasper should help massively.
I have had RROD twice, but you know what. I don't care, I have a 3 year warranty.

Unlike PS3 owners, I haven't had to wait to play the games I want and for all the potential PS3 owners waiting for a price drop, forget it and jump on board with the 360.

It's not a matter of Sku, all 360 boards now share the HDMI enabled boards so the boards will be the same across all Sku's. If you get anything built probably late October or so on you will probably get the Jasper chipsets.

Looking at how MS rolls, Jasper is the RRoD fix. Like XP/2000 was to ME. And how Windows 7 will be to Vista. Don't think the Jasper will have a high failure rate like the O.G. 360 did, so if you've been holding off for a 360, here is your chance. Almost everyone's NES stopped reading cartridges at one point in time, almost everyone's PS1 and PS2 stopped reading discs at one point in time.

RROD is a massive failure on MS' part; how widely spread the problem is, has been magnified 1000x by the ever present internet.

I have 2 Xbox 360s, 1 launch, the other purchased in May neither of which have RROD. I'm either really lucky, or the problems being reported are overblown, take your pick.

Its good to know MS are still supporting, and working on the 360 architecture, and at $199 when the slim model comes out, I'll get yet another 360.

If I were running the show I would recommend a slim model that doesn't have red LEDs. In retrospect I think it would have been better to go the Mac route, and not even notify the end user something went wrong. The "silent crash" on the Mac is one of the features that allows it to claim a more reliable OS than Windows.

I'm just waiting for my 360 to go again. I hadn't played it since Halo 3 came when I had to replace console number 3. Console 4 showed up and it was older than the one it replaced. Now, over a year later, I picked up Fable 2 and Gears 2 and love both these games, but I can't shake that feeling that it's going to die at any moment. Maybe 5 consoles is the magic number when they just ship you a new unit instead of refurbed units. I shelled out for a 2 year extended warranty when console #2 went, and good thing too as my original warranty is up now. If it died again without the warranty, I wouldn't be replacing it. It'd trade in my games, controllers, wi-fi adapter and then proceed to drive over my 360 again and again and again. the newer ones are pretty much ok. the most rrod incidents have to do with first gen 360s. especialy now, with the jasper chips this problem will be extremely minimized (there is always a minimum percent of consoles and other electronic devices that fail) if not completely disappear.heat was the reason but now it's over.It was a matter of time that this problem gets fixed by MS (they should have done it much earlier for their own and their console's good).Everyone with an older 360 get a cooling device, it will for sure save your xbox (all my friends have intercoolers and their xboxes work like new for over three years now,this cooling thing really works). So now x360 has (512MB GDDR3 Shared + 10MB EDRAM Framebuffer + 256MB Flash) on the system board? And is that for ALL skus, not just Arcade? And you can still pack on an HDD and a memory unit to the Arcade if you want?

Since launch I've had 4 months without my console due to defective units. Sitting around, not being able to play hundreds worth of games will change your gaming habits in a hurry. My last unit needed to be replaced right before Halo 3 came out. After that I said only exclusives on my 360 from now on, it's just not worth it. It had been over a year until Fable 2 and Gears 2 came out and looking on the horizon it seems like these may be the last games I buy for my 360. Let's hope MS learns from this. Considering they probably won't break even on the 360 this gen, maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Most people are saying that there really won't be any difference, while others see the Jasper as the second coming. If you have the falcon, which is what most people buying the system nowadays have, you should be ok. I wouldn't get all worried about not having the most updated motherboard because these things are bound to change from time to time.
