RaidenBlack1385d ago

It would've been cool, if the PS5 titles had an alternate feature for playing them with Dualshock 4. Like disabling the adaptive triggers input and replacing haptic feedback with rumble.
I know this means it'll defeat the whole purpose but this also does mean I can keep the Dualshock 4 as a cheap backup. Or for local couch-split-screen multiplayer.

Atom6661385d ago

I can 100% understand 1st party. But all of the multplats could easily work without the new features (and likely will). Many of them already work with the DS4 because they have a ps4 version.

RaidenBlack1385d ago

Yea that's during cross-gen transition.
What about pure next-gen multi-plat titles?

bouzebbal1384d ago

PS3 was compatible dualshock 2 with all the games, until the jailbreak released and the USB ports weren't supported anymore..
Yes, it can be compatible DS4 for all games

Atom6661384d ago

Pure next generation multiplats? Meaning compatible on PC where you can use DS4s, Xbox, or any other controller?

Or meaning multiplat across consoles where you can also use non-dual sense pads?

I only use PS4 as my SP exclusive machine anymore, so this doesn't affect me as much as that family w/kids, or the people who use their PS systems for couch MP. But I was hopeful that the old "got to rebuy all new everything" was finally ending.

ShadowWolf7121384d ago

@Bouzebbal

...the DualShock 2 didn't use USB, man.

bouzebbal1384d ago (Edited 1384d ago )

Shadow wolf

I know.. They were compatible with USB adaptor. I had one, I know what I'm talking about.
I'll never forget 4player virtua tennis 3 with only 1 sixaxis.. Rest was ps2 and pc controllers.

Bruh1384d ago

@Raiden Black

They are functionally the same controller. The Dual Sense has added gimmicks that really only first party studios will actually take advantage of. Its literally market speak for shut up and go buy our $70 controller. I understand certain titles not being compatible for DS4. But every single PS5 game? Hell nah thats BS haha

umair_s511384d ago

Good point. I think they shouldn't block PS4 support from any game. When you boot a PS5 exclusive that needs a dual sense, you should still be allowed to play the game with DS4 but you should be warned that you are missing out on features.

Yea, that's a pretty hard stance. Maybe they'll patch that functionality in later if people keep asking for it

1384d ago
Zeref1384d ago

It's nothing but a marketing play. Anyone that defends this is a blind shill.

1st party games I guess I could understand even though they could easily work around those as well. But 3rd party multiplatform games as well? Pure BS

crazyCoconuts1384d ago

I find your extreme "anyone" comments discouraging. It's a sign of closed mindedness, shutting down collaboration. You should temper your accusations and try to be more accepting of other people's opinions.

Juvia1384d ago Show
Bruh1384d ago

You'll get down-voted cause N4G crusades anything negative for PS but its true. Locking out certain titles to Dualsense only is fine. But every single PS5 games, including titles that may or may not take advantage of the 3D rumble and haptic triggers, its downright anti-consumer, its just a ploy for them to go make you buy 3 more controllers for co-op sessions

OB1Biker1384d ago

Why would you want to play PS5 games with a DS4? Many games will still work with DS4 for years anyway.

GamerRN1384d ago

It's a shame they aren't supporting everything. With so the multi platform games it wouldn't be hard to integrate the older peripherals. I get it that they want you buying into the new ecosystem but I think they could have been smoother about it.

Either way, we are almost there! Can't wait to get a new shiny system! I still get giddy...

ILostMyMind1384d ago

Sony don't want you to keep a cheap backup, they want you to buy a new DSense. And it makes sense.

Christopher1384d ago

Sure. But I paid some good money for my C40 certified PS4 controller. It's not a cheap backup.

elazz1384d ago

The new camera is a dual 1080p with higher fov as well I think and in general improvements on other levels. I do believe tracking would be better compared to the ps4 version.

THC CELL1384d ago

All I need to know we have been trying to get info in work as many people keep.asking

We are getting a price soon possible end of this month according to games hq who's working on trade price offers and bundles

GamerRN1384d ago

It depends now on the software... The resolution wasn't so much the problem. Look at the tracking of Facebook portal, it's actually really good. It's all software related. They should installed a separate chip just to power that

Profchaos1384d ago

Hopefully tracking was so bad on psvr I was hoping for the ability to add a side camera somehow

thesoftware7301385d ago

So lame that I cant use my PS4 controllers with PS5 games. Why cant I just disable the Haptic feedback gimmick?
This reminds me of the Switch with the whole HD rumble thing.

LoveSpuds1385d ago (Edited 1385d ago )

Why bother developing tech and pushing the industry forward if devs can just ignore a new feature. There was a time before dual sticks, what if we had said the same about the introduction of this technology to controllers?

Seems premature to call it a gimmick too in my opinion it also strikes me as so entitled. I have rarely bought a console that didn't introduce a new controller.

Point I am making is, what if these new triggers genuinely make an impact?

RaidenBlack1385d ago

Yea ... completely agreeable.
The new controller will always come bundled with the console. Every user, new or existing will fully experience the plethora of Dualsense features.
But also implementing a DualShock back-compatibility mode helps a lot for existing PS4 users.

crazyCoconuts1384d ago

I guess you can make the case that if instead of buying extra PS5 controllers for your family / friends, you just use your old PS4 controllers, game developers will have even less of a reason to code for PS5 specific features. So the hard line might be a way to force adoption

1384d ago
gamer78041384d ago

I wouldn’t say slightly different haptic feedback is pushing the industry forward tbh, basically they get to make more money on accessories is all this really is

crazyCoconuts1384d ago

@shaggy, if you're going to compare this to Xbox, you have to be fair is saying MS didn't add features to the controller, so they don't have to deal with this issue. Back to PS5, if a game is designed to do ADS on a half trigger pull and fire with full pull, that functionality won't work without putting resistance between those two points. This policy allows developers to freely design around those capabilities without having to worry about some backwards compatibility mode. I don't know if it will work or not, but it makes sense...it's a new console with new features. Customers are paying for those features, so let's try to give developers a reason to use them...

thesoftware7301384d ago (Edited 1384d ago )

Entitled? I spend hard earned money on Sony products. Calling me entitles implies that they are giving me something or doing me a favor, just cause you feel the need to suck up whatever BS they are pitching dont mean we all have to be happy and spin this its to some kind of "Moving the industry forward" nonsense.

Moving the industry forward can be defined many ways, like compatibility, easy of use, scaling, Choice and keeping what I already paid for relevant, all while adding new "OPTIONS". All that can be seen as industry and consumer(Which btw is you and me) leading and friendly.

I am not ignorant to buying new systems and new controllers, as I have been gaming for many many years, but come on, lets not pretend this is good for the consumer or some kind of major technological advancement for gaming.

Yes I called it a Gimmick. Beeps and boops, with different rumble pressure will be fun but still a gimmick that I am almost certain I would enjoy my game almost the same way without it. Just like the joy-cons..OH MY! it really feels like i'm pouring water lol..fun but a gimmick that I can live without.

Saijahn1384d ago

How is it pushing the industry forward? Xbox been had haptic feedback in their controllers since 2013.

1384d ago
Bruh1384d ago

The ideal, consumer friendly solution to that problem is to create a product that people buy because they are interested in what it can do, not because it's the only way to use the PS5. If you're afraid that not enough people would buy your new product without forcing it, then you have not created an interesting enough new product.

Yeah, I am pretty peeved by this as I am a competitive multiplayer gamer and have spent a lot of money of different controllers such as the scuf vantage and what not. Xbox definitely leads Playstation in that regard as the Elite is an amazing controller. Sony needs to finally make their own comp controller. I feel like it was a huge miss to not include adaptability for back buttons on the standard controller.

RaidenBlack1384d ago

The new Elite is a good controller.
But the original Elite had quality issues.

GamerRN1384d ago

Yeah the rubber grips kept falling off. That was annoying. I'm glad it's fixed in E2

FyBy1384d ago

It makes sense. Same reason Sony making PS5 exclusives PS5 only and not for PS4. They put everything into it. Its a pitty, that for couch coop I cant use some of the old controllers. But anyway....they are really old and worn out :-)

RosweeSon1384d ago (Edited 1384d ago )

Don’t get that myself but 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 I wanna use a ps5 pad for Ps5 games myself and one comes with every console so it’s a none starter really if you wanna continue using PS4 or playing ps4 games with a dual shock4 you can if not you use the new controller for the new console you just bought and funnily enough each console comes with a free controller 😑🤷🏻‍♂️ 😂✌🏻

1384d ago
RosweeSon1384d ago (Edited 1384d ago )

Shaggy I get that but if you wanna show off the latest games gotta pay up otherwise couch co-op fifa etc play last years save yourself the money get next years much cheaper put money towards a pad. I rarely get mates round for gaming (yes I have a couple 😂) if we’re gaming it’s online but I get your argument I just think for the majority won’t be an issue play online play the last years version through BC with dual shock 4’s or get mates to bring their pads or go flash buy spare pad. It’ll be expensive day1 etc but 6-12 months down the line 🤷🏻‍♂️ Sure there will be bundles with an extra controller or what not if couch co-op is that big to you maybe don’t upgrade console day1 I buy the console for me 😜✌🏻🤓&# 128514; been long time since had some old school 4 player goldeneye sessions myself 🤓✌🏻

If I was that attached to a controller to play older games I’d just stick with the older system. Personally I’m not done with ps4 but more than excited to see what they cooking up with ps5 new controller features seem pretty great to me. We’ll see when I got one in my hands.

In response to another of your comments yeah they could disable all the new next gen features they implementing and stick with dual shock 4 but what is the point in that if your getting a new console you want something new be it the games the controller the features or all the above. Last thing I’m turned off is all the new features for the new controller. I think some people need to just stick with current gen or go for some old some old options for Fifa and assassins and same old zzz

OB1Biker1384d ago (Edited 1384d ago )

And why cant you use the DualSense?
It 'a probably a better controller.

LoveSpuds1385d ago

Agreed in both scores mate, glad I can keep my wheel and current VR setup.

DigitallyAfflicted1384d ago

That was annoying last gen transmission, thank God they improved on that.

Phoenix761384d ago (Edited 1384d ago )

I'm just wondering if the adapter will be provided with the ps5. As it does say, more details on how to get it later

badz1491384d ago

that's very good to hear. the way they dropped support for the G25 & G27 for the PS4 was a huge stab in the back. I know it was because those 2 wheels didn't have a share button but come on, it's not a peripheral that only cost $50 like the DS3! and then they Logitech released the G29 without the shift stick included unlike the 2 before it....AAARRRGHHH THE RAGE! hopefully never again!

rainslacker1384d ago

Yeah. All logitech controllers really. I had a good ps3 wheel, and this gen I brought a cheap one because I wasnt sure it would carry over into next gen.

IRetrouk1384d ago

I take it they must have changed the connection type on the camera, will probably just pick up the new camera, save all the waiting for an adaptor to be posted out, it's good for those that have a bit more patience than me though lol

RosweeSon1384d ago

Yeah I don’t really see a major major issue myself but can see a few arguments it would have been great, but if the pads that different it’s not feasible the buttons might look in the same place and set to be standard again but think this new controller packing some top stuff in its casing.

Kurt Russell1383d ago

Logitech have yet to announce whether their wheel will be. I currently have the G29, I have a feeling they will shelve it rather than make it forward compatible. I hope I am wrong... if not, I guess it was y mistake for choosing Logitech over the more expensive ones.

"Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?

No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."

That is a bummer, so you can not use old controllers for PS5 games. Why do they not mirror xbox where all accessories work.

Nitrowolf21385d ago

Because the XsX controller for the most is the same, whereas Dualsense has a lot more bells and whistles that devs make profiles for.

That still doesn't excuse it, devs should be able to make profiles to make DS4 work IMO

DJStotty1384d ago

The point i was making is you can use an xbox one controller, for a series x game.

All they need to do is implement detection on which pad is being used which can be done at a console level, and then disable said bells and whistles.

Just like how you will be able to disable the haptic feedback etc anyway, for people that do not want it.

Like you said, no excuse other than to force people onto the new pad/hardware.

SullysCigar1384d ago

Because Xbox didn't mirror PlayStation by advancing their controller tech.

1384d ago
SullysCigar1384d ago

Read the article, Shaggy, they don't want those things disabled. Why would Devs implement features over 110m people might not bother using?

I get that it's not convenient, as we've all got DS4s, but if it means the devs bother and we all get a better experience, I'm all for it.

1384d ago
RosweeSon1384d ago

Yeah it’s mad Sony have had dual shock in various forms for multi gens the one time they proper change it booooo 😑😏👎 27995;😂😂 Nintendo will use same controller next generation for a change (apart from Wii/WiiU) and it’ll be oh should have changed the controller like they normally always do and then get moaned at 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷 🏻‍♂️😂 I get the general layouts of controllers is pretty spot on but if they can change it for the better I’m all in. Dual sense looks pretty impressive to me and not even used one yet looking forward to it.

DJStotty1384d ago

@Sullys

There are gamers that do not like having the rumble feature in controllers, so they disable it in the controller settings. Nothing to do with tech, Sony can easily allow a DS4 controller to play PS5 games, the question is why won'y they?

So for local split screen etc, you have to buy an additional DS5 controller, forcing you to buy hardware.

Were you bummed when the PS2 controller wouldn't work with the PS3 and so on? No? There is zero reason to be upset about this. We are getting a new and better controller (let's hope battery life isn't garbage like DS4) why the hell would you want to use the old stuff? That's like complaining you can't use a N64 controller on the Switch

aconnellan1384d ago

“Were you bummed when the PS2 controller wouldn't work with the PS3 and so on? No?“

What kind of world are we living in where this is an okay response?

To be clear, this isn’t something I expected to happen - I was ready to (and still will) purchase new controllers for the new consoles, because that’s what I was going to do.

But saying “this is how it’s always been done so there’s no obligation to do any different” is a very close-minded train of thought. Imagine if we applied that to games - we wouldn’t have things like Ghosts of Tsushima, or Death Stranding, or any number of great games where it would have been easy to replicate what’s been done before that people expect.

“Why the hell would you want to use the old stuff?”

Maybe they have a family (siblings, friends that come over, whatever) that uses 4 controllers to play together, and out of the gate it’d be cool to save money and just get the DualSense that comes in the box, rather than pay for 3 extra controllers for all them to play together?

DJStotty1384d ago

@dragon

No because 360 pads work on the xbox one, as does the duke replica (resold as wireless), as will all previous controllers, accessories work on the series X.

I am just asking the question why they are not allowing it when it can be done, same with what they did the back compat.

IRetrouk1383d ago

360 pads do not work on the xbox one

IRetrouk1384d ago (Edited 1384d ago )

They want to push their game controller spec forward, I dont see the issue to be honest, ofcourse they want to make money, otherwise why bother? But to say that's the only reason is wrong, the new controller is doing things not possible on the old controllers, sony want to push that as they see it as an important step to better immersion in games, like it, dont, but it is what it is.

How come no complaints about ms proprietary ssd cards? Aint they closer to off the shelf specs than sonys? Yet sony will allow 3rd party off the shelf SSDs to fit, why isnt microsoft following sony in that?

Now ofcourse we know why, ms is doing it to make money, they did it on the 360, and they made the xbox one hardrive difficult to remove so they could sell externals, but they are also doing it for compatability, to make sure every extra drive you put in will perform the same.

My point? All companies push new tech, regardless of what it is, to make money, yes, but to also push whatever medium it is forward.

DJStotty1384d ago

I understand the new controller has new tech, that is not the issue.

The issue is why they are flat out not allowing you to use old controllers to play PS5 games, what has the new controller got to do with it?

You will most probably get 1 pad with the console, you are now forced to buy a DS5 controller if you want 2 pads to play couch co-op etc. Whereas with series X, you can just bang an xbox one pad in, there are additions to the series X controller that are unavailable on the xbox one controller, they are still allowing compatibility.

IRetrouk1384d ago

Really easy to understand, sony invested in a new controller, they want it and its features to be used, they dont want to support the old controller on new games because of this, what's so hard to understand?, not one person complained about the 360 and ps3 pads not working on this gens consoles, not one lol now it's an issue? Why?

You complain about having to buy a second controller, yet say nothing about having to buy ms version of an ssd, why no complaints there? It's the same thing, they both want to ensure compatability and that the investment is worth it, just using different products to do it.

RosweeSon1384d ago

Because like Nintendo they are trying something new and trying to change or better the way we play. They could do what Xbox have done and use the same controller again for the same games but they wanna try something different. They used dual shock range enough they wanna evolve their controller for a new generation. Why buy a new console to use last gen controllers. If your that attached just stick to PS4 for a few more years 🤓✌🏻🤷&# 127995;‍♂️

DJStotty1384d ago

What does advanced tech in the DS5 and trying something new, got to do with allowing you to use your old pads on the new console?

Why not have both, give the gamer the option of not needing to buy multiple DS5 pads just to play local with friends etc.

Profchaos1384d ago

Xsx controller is the same as the X1 with a share button there's no technical limitations because nothing is improved

New PlayStation Handheld Reported Again, Supposedly Runs PS4 Games

Another leaker has claimed that a PSP/PS Vita style PlayStation handheld is in the works, and it'll supposedly support PS4 games.

playstationlifestyle.net
anast1d 12h ago

If this is true, it will crush everything for the price.

VenomUK23h ago(Edited 23h ago)

Needs to be a PS5 portable.

Cacabunga23h ago

PS4 native with PS5 remote play capabilities. Would be sweet.

And let PS Portal support cloud streaming for all PS+ games.

anast22h ago

Going off all the pricing behavior of Sony to this point. I'm willing to bet it will be cheaper than the Steam Deck. And when the price is revealed and I am right, send me a message.

Cacabunga22h ago

Could be an attempt to counter switch 2 which will have PS4 power.
Imagine all the PS4 third party re releases switch 2 is going to get.. “PS4 portable” could get the exact same games once again and publishers can resell software ..

If this portable has provides PS5 remote play on top then it will have a nice argument and exclusive feature.

DarXyde4h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Cacabunga,

Possibly, though I think any attempt to win against Nintendo in the handheld space is hopeless.

I loved the PSP and I still enjoy my Vita, but there's something about a full scale Mario and Zelda in your hands that makes it clear Sony should share the space, but never dream of taking it.

It's a very safe bet from Sony to have it run PS4 games too because then neither you nor developers are on the hook to make dedicated games for it.

Time will tell. I hope it's real. I'm willing to bet that it is—this is an inevitable strategy for Nintendo and the Surface team is allegedly handling Microsoft's next hardware stint. Sony wouldn't be the only one without portable hardware.

It would be a niche product like Portal. Not bad, but not mainstream. It's legacy PS4 right?

Kneetos23h ago

The switch 2 and next steam deck will be out by then and will likely be way more popular

anast22h ago

The switch 2 will be a handheld Series S for kids and the next steam deck will be ridiculously over priced for a bunch of aging CRPGS and F2P mobile style games.

Kneetos14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

@Anast the switch 2 will Fortnite dance on the new Sony handhelds grave
Playstation can't compete with Nintendo there

With playstation porting all it's games to pc and by extension steam deck it pretty much makes the new pshandheld system irrelevant

Especially since all I ever hear from the Sony crowd is "I NEED graphics or I can't enjoy the game" a handheld PS4 is going the same way as Sony's handheld ps3

Hypertension14013h ago(Edited 13h ago)

If the switch 2 isn't backwards compatible, it will fail.

If this is true, then it will already have a large of games to play from the start, add ps1,ps2,psp,vita games to the mix, and it can be massively popular.

anast1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

The switch is a Mario machine and for kids, they have their own space. Tell me where I am wrong here.

The problem is that Sony isn't porting all of the games to the Steam Deck specifically. The Steam Deck can't play every game. It even has a verified category with games that run the best and a "playable" category that can barely run games. So, the best option to play would obviously be a Sony product.

The last point is inane. I can't respond to comments that use caps. the point should be able to stand on it's own

NotoriousWhiz1h ago

It doesn't matter hiw popular the Playstation handheld is if it shares the same library as the PS5. It just brings more people into the ecosystem and provides them with more ways to play their games.

Kneetos39m ago

@anast Nintendo is competing with Sony and no amount of backpedaling will change that
They were competing during the GameCube era and the Wii u era, coincidentally the 2 gens they lost to Sony, but we're suddenly not competing during the ds, Wii and 3ds era because they beat playstation, but of course we can't have that can we so "Nintendo isn't competition Sony auto wins"

The switch is more then a mario and even a first party machine these days as there are plenty of games, specifically Japanese and indi games that are doing better on switch then their ps counterpart
It's irrelevant that Sony isn't specifically porting to steam deck, the games will end up on there and people will wait for a pc port just like how playstation fans wait for a playstation port of games, you aren't unique

Playstation fans constantly brag on graphics, so a handheld that only plays PS4 games isn't going to entice a lot of them, like the vita before it, and Sony has a history of just dropping unsuccessful projects, the vita psvr and it looks like the portal isn't doing too hot either

If you had every PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP and PSV game then sure but I mean if it's just the PS4 why not just get a Steam Deck?

anast1d ago

You might be correct, but it depends on the price point. Also, most PC gamers wait years for Sony releases, so it might be better just to get the PS4 handheld.

crazyCoconuts23h ago

I'd be surprised if Sony reversed course and continued to put new releases on PS4. It would cannibalize their PS5 sales

MrBaskerville1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

If it supports your library, some people own more ps4 games than steam games. I know I do.

crazyCoconuts23h ago

I might buy something like this to play my old library but man those old games are cheap on steam. This console would have to be cheap to make sense. I don't see it happening

MrBaskerville22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

@CrazyCoconuts
I also think it sounds a little off. I would probably buy if it could run Ps5 games, but that sounds expensive. Being ps4 only is a little limiting I think.

But if it ran all ps4 titles and new stuff created for the handheld. then it could be interesting. Basically a Vita that just happened to come with a huge ass backlog of existing games.

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

My libraries are roughly equal in size for both, maybe if I could play more classics games on the Playstation one I could consider it. But it's a tough selling point for people who aren't already heavily invested in the Playstation ecosystem.

SegaSaturn66923h ago

Deck is very viable option given how good PS3 and switch emulation have become. Even new releases are chugging along at 30fps.

Lexreborn222h ago

To be fair, I have a lot of ps4 games I don’t have on steam that is can play on my ps5 but I choose to play ps5 games on my ps5.

I also haven’t rebought any of my PlayStation exclusives on PC because I own them on my ps4/5 and even the upgraded ways that rival the pc version. So, if I wanted to play them on my steam deck I would still have to buy them again which if I bought the 6 top games Spider-Man 1,2, mm, horizon, fw , GoW and ragnarok and GoT with LoU1,2. It would more then. Likely be the cost of this device.

So, instead of double dipping I would buy the handheld and if it has a playable sf6 that actually works online (steam deck is not functional) I think I would want it for myself

Vits21h ago

If you have them in digital form, for sure. Because I don't see Sony giving you a digital copy of your old physical PS4 games. That doesn't sound like them at all.

And also, Steam doesn't depend on PS4 games. PC got more games that generation than all the consoles combined. The ports of PlayStation games are just one of the cherries on top of the cake.

Lexreborn216h ago

@vits I do have them in digital form which is why I said from my perspective. I also have a steam deck but that doesn’t mean everything runs on it which not everything is playable. And as I am also stating the perks of why people WOULD want them even while having a steam deck it’s weird to see people disagreeing purely because I wouldn’t want to double dip financially.

But even in the event you have physical copies of games, if you have ps plus most if not all of the ps4 games are there. So, it’s not like the options are non existent and people can’t find VIABLE reasons to purchase the device.

If people are justifying the portal, they can justify a dedicated portable. The desire to make it seem like people can only own one thing these days is an odd occurrence.

@Lexreborn2
Then for sure, if you already have your library in digital form, something that can tap into it is definitely a good deal. That's basically the same reason why the Steam Deck is popular with PC and Steam users in general, because their library is available on it.

PS Plus is an extra cost though, and those games aren't yours. So I get where you are coming from, but that is a different discussion. As for the Portal, I don't get how people justify that piece of crap either, but they sure did so I can see a PS Vita 2 being sucessful. I don't see it being cheap or better value than the Steam Deck or any Windows Handheld, unless Sony really makes some radical changes.

As for why people want one device to rule them all instead of a bunch of them, it's likely because most people here are adults. If I recall correctly, the N4G user base is around their mid-30s. At this point in life, the issue is not usually owning things but actually having time to use them.

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

@Vits,
I don't think a new PS handheld would be worth it for me after owning the Steamdeck, assuming there will probably be a lot of overlap of both libraries in my case, so just having the one device is fine for me (I don't need the clutter or devices with too much overlap). I'll probably just stream the PS4 games I don't have on Steam to the Steam Deck via Chiaki, I would probably need the PS handheld to have its own exclusives to entice me.

Because if you already have a large digital library of PS4 titles and this plays PS4 games you don't need much more than the system. It's also rumoured to play some ps5 games.

If you buy a steam deck you have to re buy your library.

Eonjay9h ago

If you are already in he PS ecosystem you probably have hundreds of digital PS4 games. Especially if you are on PSPlus Extra. These folks, of which there are millions upon millions would probably rater have access to the games they already own vs buying them all again on Steam.

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

This is the question, might be nice for the Playstation exclusive games from previous generations, but Sony's Playstation Classics lineup is seriously lacking, especially from their PS1 catalogue, I don't think the PS2/PS3 catalogue are that huge either.

A Steam Deck is already somewhere between a PS4 and a PS4 Pro in terms of power. Without those exclusive games from Sony's previous consoles, I don't see how you could convince anyone a new Playstation handheld to be better value than a Steam Deck. I can also literally put previous Playstation's libraries onto it without too much trouble.

Exactly and this is a prime example of why exclusives matter

Without them Steamdeck just looks like the better choice overall

I still play my vita. The oled screen was too good for it's time. I obviously had to home brew it but playing my old snes/ps1 games on it is so good.

Barlos6h ago

So many times I've been tempted to hack my Vita but I just can't bring myself to do it. I kind of want it to be as originalas possible. Also, for emulation I have my steam deck.

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

I was tempted to hack my Vita, but I couldn't bear to risk it, something about having the original software/experience on the handheld.

I'll happily emulate on the Steam Deck, especially the games that weren't available on the Aussie store or ones I just missed out on.

Skuletor1d ago

How many people will buy this at launch? As a Vita owner, I'd definitely hold back after how Sony's support for that turned out.
Also, PSP played near PS2 quality games, PS Vita played near PS3 quality games, shouldn't the next Playstation handheld be aiming for near PS5 quality?

MeteorPanda23h ago

the sadest thing on vita support for me was the removal of Close? The app that let you see local players and what they were playing. i made friends back in the day for co op that way lol.

I think it was privacy breaching? such a shame.

Skuletor23h ago

Vita had so much promise, I wonder what it would have taken for Sony to have been more supportive. GTA: San Andreas Stories would have probably brought more sales alone, if they could have gotten that. I was disappointed we never really got anything on the same level as Killzone: Mercenary after that game, which looked amazing running on the Killzone 3 engine. Would have loved to see new entries of PS IP like Infamous, God of War etc, Sony really dropped the ball and using proprietary memory cards that were ridiculously priced didn't help, if they were smart, they'd have sold them cheaper since they were mainly being used to store stuff people were paying for in their store anyway, lol.

anast22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

The people that remember the vita are in the minority.

Skuletor17h ago

So are the amount of people that bought it

Einhander197221h ago(Edited 21h ago)

The point would be that it plays PS4 games, PS4 is still getting games constantly.

Everyone here including yourself presumably already has a library of games to play on this.

The success of the Portal shows the value of not needing to have a separate game library.

Skuletor17h ago

I don't think it will have native PS4 support

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

@Skuletor,
Why not? The PS5 plays PS4 games fine (because the tech is similar), one could assume that if Sony is using AMD hardware, then they will probably have native PS4 support.

MeteorPanda9h ago

Honestly the amount of games you could get on these cards was better value than what the switch was offering per cartidge. Cartridges got no slack from these same people.

The games for vita were very cheap, 30 dollars on average in store.

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

I'm still salty about the proprietary memory card prices, I don't remember those ever getting cheap.

Eonjay9h ago

I mean how mich more support does the PS4 really need. It's not a new system... just a portable PS4. There are over 10 000 PS4 games available. Sony doesn't need to support it.

There are some crazy rumors out there but we don't have the technology to run a Series S in Portal mode let alone a PS5.

Skuletor9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

How many people that have a physical PS4 library will be willing to buy their games again to download these rumoured PS4 games to this rumoured portable? Until it gets officially revealed, none of us really know how this thing will operate but I will point out, Sony usually sell their consoles at low profit with the intention of making more money later in software sales. People that will be mostly playing games they already own, won't be their largest target market, most likely.

Also, hopefully it would have it's own exclusives to highlight the portables strengths too and not just games from a last gen system

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

Even if we did have the technology, imagine how terrible the battery life would be! You'd have to be more tethered to a power outlet than any of the other PC handhelds.

Barlos6h ago

Yeah same here. The way they handled the Vita has left me burned. I don't trust them to give a handheld the support it needs and so I'll not buy it at launch. I need to see their commitment first.

FinalFantasyFanatic1h ago

No, I don't think the technology would be near enough to give us PS5 quality, not unless you're okay with 20 mins battery life (then there's heat dissipation and weight to think of too). I feel like that's the mistakes PC handhelds like Rog Ally, MSI Claw and Lenovo Legion Go make, they over power the Steam Deck, but you pay for it in battery life, I'd rather have more battery life when I'm using a handheld.

To be fair though, with the race to beat climate change/reach net-zero, they're developing new battery tech all the time, maybe in a few years we could have a battery that adds a stupid amount of playtime to a powerful handheld.

This is precisely why discless consoles are a terrible idea. I made my money back on my disc based ps5 within the first two months when comparing the cost on the PS Store to what I paid for my physical disc versions. The last game I bought was Armoured Core 6 for £43.85 on ShopTo, still costs £59.99 on PS Store. Those savings soon add up.

shit-tier countries wanna make it look like they're working for the consumer's benefit, meanwhile they leave apple alone, the mobile market is actually something that affects people, not psn lmao
