The Writers Guild Won't Be Awarding Video Game Writing Until More Games Are Made by Members

"Games have become increasingly acknowledged at awards shows over the past few years, but in 2020, it looks like one show will be dropping the category. The Writers Guild of America will not be awarding Videogame Writing this year, due to lack of what the guild describes as a "critical mass" of WGA-covered games."
US Gamer says.

Oh the stupidity.... Trying to make a system...

But I bet a video game writer trying to become a member will be hard work

AnubisG1699d ago

I would say, a lot of money instead. This is clearly about finances. They put that on display here.

To me, this means that their awards are absolutely meaningless.

I'm sure it's not really meaningless to writers. It's probably like oscars, emmys, and academy awards. If you win, or are even nominated, you at least have a better position to negotiate from. So it's like a pay raise. Which is what made Weinstein so powerful.

Not sure why we should care if they present awards. There are thousands of people that give awards, and the writing guild isnt one I consider the top of peoples lists to be the one to strive for. It doesn't have the same kind of respect that SAG has for movies or TV to be the premiere awards show, and there are still awards out there for those who arent members of such things. It might be important to those in the guild or getting the awards, but if the guild is going to withhold that benefit from their current members, are they achieving anything.

The truth of the matter is is that there is a lot of talent out there willing to work.for industry standard contractual wages. For the most part, they write a script, and have little involvement past that point. The ones that continue to stay involved tend to be those that are also part of the production team and do more than write.

How much does it cost to be a member?

I mean this is definitely money related.

Ohh, so we got a real world pay to win situation right here.

Why Indie Games Fail To Keep Their Place In The Spotlight

A look into the sad trajectory of indie games from high successful releases to complete irrelevancy in just a few weeks or months.

Easy not enough developpers to add content to the game (palworld)

That's the thing with gaming there's always new experiences to have why spend months or years playing a single game when there's a new experience right around the corner.

Indie or AAA if your building your game expecting long term player counts you'll probably be disappointed as gamers often enjoy something for a few weeks and move on only to return if it's truely a classic.

Out of all the generations I've experienced there's games from 30 plus years ago I still dust off and play like super Mario bros, earthbound, vice city and san Andreas being games I treasure and revisit every few years but I'm not going back to play a game designed to keep me engaged for months on end because it's also designed to milk my wallet in most cases.

Build a great game that people love make it playable offline and ask does it matter if the concurrent player count is under 100 a year post launch more often that not it doesn't

The price of entry is too high to take chances like I used to. Was looking at V Rising and that ranges from $50-$130 CAD. That’s a lot for an indie imo. By the time it goes on sale, the player count might be dwindling. But that’s the trade-off, I guess.

I’m glad my preference is single player experiences, Indie devs got me covered 👊🏻
