Sony CEO vows to tackle game addiction as WHO to group it as disorder

"We need to take it seriously and adopt countermeasures," Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida said.

sander97021834d ago

It's really great to see this disease being combated at last, I've seen way to many people forget that real life exists and turn themselves over completely to gaming. Although gaming addiction isn't the only addiction out there it's still a really bad one that affects a lot of people who play games, imagine if an alcoholic proudly proclaimed themselves to be a "drinker" that's how I've seen the people who claim to be "gamers" and play games for 5+ hours a day every day.
You shouldn't let your hobby define your life, if you can't imagine a world without video-games then you have a real problem and should admit it so you can get past the problem and live a better life.

They should start by fighting the new trend of making games addictive instead of fun (Ubisoft, Activision, Battle Royale, EA, etc.).

5+ is okay? especially if not in the row, but 15+ is def a problem

RauLeCreuset1834d ago

It's best not to think of it as being defined by whether one falls below or exceeds a set amount of time gaming. It's more to do with the distlruption caused to other areas of life.

Sorry, I disagree about it being a disease. I think of Cancer, or diabetes as a disease. This is just people engaging in something too much. The same could be said of many other things. Parents need to take a more active role in their kids lives, for one thing. If you're an adult with a job and responsibilities, if you take care of real things and choose to play a game for a few hours, I think that's ok. But I wish people would stop comparing gaming or everything anyone can over engage in to opioid addiction. Or sone such thing. They're not the same.

"We've already implemented a ratings system (to restrict players by age) and have been taking measures based on our own standards," Yoshida said.

Yes we know you're already adding extra censorship for the kids, and now you're going to treat your gamers as addicts?

Keep pumping out those great games though so I can become addicted to them. What are they going to do to combat it? Auto shut off the console after 5 hours and tell you to take a walk outside?

gaming is no more a disorder or disease than any other activity done in excess. Running and any sports thet create a natural high should also be called a disorder then. It does our future generations no good by coddling them by passing any addiction off as a disorder.

Question_Mark1834d ago

An addiction is a disorder. An addiction is when a craving for something is so strong that it affects other parts of your life negatively. Exercise can be a disorder if you do it so much that you neglect yourself or other people. It does our future generations no good to downplay and write off their problems and tell them to “suck it up”.

Honest question in terms of your comment: Is a person believing so strongly in their mind that they are the opposite sex that they develop gender dysphoria and depression to the point they feel the need to mutilate and reconstruct their bodies a disease? Or just normal?

I ask this because EVERYTHING that is us resides in the brain... Emotion, Memory, Thought, Logic, Reason, Confusion, Love, Faith, etc etc. So the thing is, if everything that is US is in the brain, how do we as humans determine what is acceptable or right, morally or ethically normal, wrong, evil or good, just of unfair...???

Gaming doesn't necessarily create a reaction in a way that is additive though. Gaming in many cases is used to compensate for other issues one may have, such as depression or social anxiety disorder. Solving the gaming addiction just means they'd find something else to cling to, unless they seek other help.

Some people are also just lazy, or have no motivation to do anything else, but that doesn't necessarily mean they have a disorder.

There are a lot of reasons why someone may play what is considered excessive, or at the expense of other things. Those other things may not always be important to a person. Like work or personal hygeine or whatever.

A disorder is a hard thing to define, and I think until there is a clinical way to define what is gaming addiction, all these efforts are wasted. Instead of trying to address the disorder, try to define it. Surely, the game industry with it's collective billions can fund research on the matter which would be unbiased, and be able to be peer reviewed by qualified psychiatrist, instead of just taking random data and feels to make what is ultimately an empty gesture that may not help at all.

Can FSR 3 frame generation deliver the 120fps dream on PS5 and Xbox?

Frame generation technology has arrived on consoles, amplifying frame-rates and potentially transforming experiences.

adds between 8.3-15.3 milliseconds of latency on the game they tested, - no thanks

darksky21h ago

Base latency is 130.8ms and frame gen takes that up to 139.1ms. A 7% increase in latency is hardly a deal breaker.

Zenzuu20h ago

That's hardly a deal breaker and not really noticeable. Even the folks at Digital Foundry said so as well.

darthv721d 14h ago

Impressive results... sadly I don't have a 120hz display. I was thinking this technique could increase fps on any game that supports it regardless of the display.

purple1011d 14h ago (Edited 1d 14h ago )

I have a vrr telly in the lounge,

On another point, what if it were the other way around where the developer aims for higher fps, then used something like pssr to make the resolution higher, that might be better?

Any which way, PS5 pro sure looks interesting now, being they have already doubled frame rate, with JUST just this fsr3.0

sagapo19h ago

It’s up to dev’s to implement FSR 3 support tho but most probably will I guess (hope).

Eonjay5h ago

Yes it would increase the framerate but it would add more noticeable latency. The impact of latency goes down the more natural frames produced. So a monitor that can push bast 60 will naturally allow the game to operate much smoother. Add VRR to this and now you have a much more enjoyable experience.

BlackDoomAx21h ago

Can it deliver the 60fps dream?

purple10111h ago(Edited 11h ago)

no, it delivers approx 80fps.

which is why I say why not target 60fps with this new tech and use the upscaling pssr, (Sonys version of Nvidia's DLSS, that seems so popular in the pc realm)

then we have best of both, better believe ps5pro will be doing all the above.

andy8520h ago

Now I've extensively tried it I'm not too fussed about 120 fps. Give me a locked 60 and more details and I'm more than happy

anast16h ago(Edited 16h ago)

120 is a bit slow. My eyes can't look at anything less than 260fps.
