Warzone #16 - Do PS3 Games Really Give You More Because Of Blu-Ray?

Torrence Davis of The Bitbag writes, "This show got pretty heated during the last 30 minutes. Hiphopgamer argued that Blu-Ray makes games bigger and better and I argued that the number one PS3 game, MGS4, can be completed in less than 10hrs and it's a 50gb game. It went on and on until the end of the show. Watch the Live Blog while you are listening to see some of the points our readers touched on. Also on the show:

- 360 Shakes up Japan. Can they continue?
- Forced Unleashed is getting panned by most reviewers. We talk about why it's a love it or hate it game.
- We discuss why retro-gaming is still fun and still worth spending money on.
- Goodfellajay Diss.
- Element X, racist, bigot, I don't know you make the call.
- Is Little Big Planet Toy Story quality?
- We question GTAV's exclusivity considering there will be a new Xbox when they start working on it.
- And much much more…"

they will

currently they let devs not compress as much as they would. Some people would argue that, that gives better graphics and sound.

but i dont see the diff yet =/

InMyOpinion5733d ago

It's all flamebait and no substance.

BattleAxe5733d ago

Technically speaking, with a game like Lost Odyssey, you got more with DVD because you got 4 DVDs :)

nbsmatambo5732d ago

still 4 * 9 = 36GB

1 dual layer blu ray disk is 50GB

pp5733d ago

NO definitely not most likely you'll get 6hrs game play on most blu-ray games

TheColbertinator5733d ago

@PP

Are you honestly out of your mind?

50GB is more than 9GB,duh

I know many people did'nt like MGS4 but you have got to be joking.
Lost Odyssey on the 360 was 4 discs and it was a big game.If it was only on one disc,it would been SMALLER.Catch my drift?

To be bias is one thing.I dont care what people's favorite consoles are but everybody has to do the math.

Which is bigger?

A.50GB

B.9GB

Anyone?

Sir_Ken_Kutaragi5733d ago (Edited 5733d ago )

'A'

Do i win a Trophy??? ;-D

But in the Minds of a xBot Lemming who has been brain washed by Micro$oft and the King RATS on this they see 'B' as being Bigger!!!
;-D

+I could go on about what games on the PS3 look better than any games on the xBox 360 but can't be @SSED going around in a LOOP!!! ;-D
The BEST Console is PS3 END OF... ;-P
Carry on people... ;)

morganfell5733d ago

This assclown from %&itbag makes me laugh. 10hrs for MGS4? Really? Even without watching the cutscenes there is easily 20 hours of game there. Easily longer than a game I really like - HALO3. Easily longer than Gears of War. Guys like this turd are the same people that said Heavenly Sword was 6 hours long. Moron. Objectivity = Zero. Too bad he doesn't have the guts to admit what the rest of us have already stated - we have a console preference. Instead he walks around with a fanboy stick up his ass with his denial hat on. In the end he is what he is and everyone knows it.

And you can't expect Bluray to show it's strength on a multiplatform game when you have MS doing it's level best along with dumbass developers that want to make both versions the same. It's like having one airline with prop driven planes and the other airline with jet aircraft. One can fly faster than the other but you have the FAA saying "We are making sure both airlines fly at the same speed."

Incorrect.Metal Gear Solid 4 took 33GB not 50GB.Do your research kids.

As for the Blu-Ray

Which is bigger?

A.50B

B.9GB

I'll give you a hint: Do the math

@The disagrees

Ok,tell me how 50 is bigger than 9.Let me hear your wisdom.

BaSeBaLlKiD7215733d ago

its bigger because it has 41 more GB

btw im not the one who gave you a disagree

thor5733d ago (Edited 5733d ago )

You meant "tell me how 9 is bigger than 50" but I'll let that pass lol.

I didn't disagree, but I don't think games (this gen) will ever be particularly held back by having DVD. Maybe if the 360 used only single-layer DVDs or the PS3 could use 4-layered blu-rays, there would be enough of a difference. The reason is, 50 may be bigger than 9, but 50 isn't bigger than 6 times 9. There's no reason a 360 game couldn't come on 6 disks. And having to swap disks is less of a pain than having to install the game for 3 minutes before each act in MGS4. Plus, I don't know how many games have actually come on a dual-layer blu-ray, I think it's only MGS4 that has. And even that only uses 33 Gb. That's 4 disks. And the game is split up into acts anyway, so if they'd had to fit it onto numerous DVDs it wouldn't have affected the game. The lack of cell processor and standard hard drive might have. Any game on a single-layer blu-ray wouldn't take up any more than 3 disks on 360. And that's really not a problem. The problem is lack of standard hard drive (don't tell me the hard drive is needed because of blu-ray being slow, it isn't, and the hard drive has only been used by devs to speed up their engine which they haven't optimised well for the cell) and the cell processor has a far larger theoretical performance than the 360's setup. The graphics cards are comparable.

BIoodmask5733d ago (Edited 5733d ago )

John Carmack, one of the most brilliant game designers/game engine desingers of all time doesn't seem to support your theory that Blu-ray streams things as fast as DVD.

I think I will take his word over yours:

"The PS3 streams things slower than the 360, so by the time we ship, there may be the case where getting things off the disk faster may ultimately look better."

Right there is the reason for mandatory installs on a lot of PS3 titles.

http://www.shacknews.com/fe...

thor5733d ago

I don't think that's a blu-ray speed based issue. I think it's an architecture issue within the PS3. I believe him if he says that streaming is slower, but you DON'T need an install to do that. The actual read speeds of the blu-ray drive in the PS3 and the DVD drive in the 360 are very similar. Uncharted had no problem streaming data because it did it in advance before you got to that area, and cached it on the HDD (not an install) so it could load it much faster. Futhermore, hard disk streaming is MUCH faster than either blu-ray OR DVD streaming. So it is beneficial for the PS3 to have a hard drive even if it had a DVD drive instead of a blu-ray one.

TheColbertinator5733d ago

@Bloodmask

I heard Carmack saying that as well. The problem is that the PS3 was rushed with slow readers for the Blu-Ray.Games on the PS3 will be bigger but installs will slow it down considerably.

nbsmatambo5733d ago (Edited 5733d ago )

@ Steven Colbert

how can u say anything about the PS3 is rushed. Im sure they spent a long time thinking about including the bluray drive, and they knew it was gonna be slower, mayb thats y they included cell so the devs can utilize it. One of the best games last year (Uncharted) didnt force us to install anything. Its just all in the programming

im sure there will be big games on the horizon but they wont b slow...

plain rice5733d ago (Edited 5733d ago )

You do realize the PS3 was the only 2x Bluray player on the market right? It's still one of the fastest BR players even till now. Rushed? lol

The Lazy One5733d ago (Edited 5733d ago )

With creative writing (edit: creative writing meaning writing things on the disc in creative ways. not like literary creative writing), you can read things that need to be read a lot faster than blu-ray.

the average speeds are similar, but if you put things that only need to be read once or twice every load towards the center, and things that get read every minute or less on the outside, you can increase streaming by a decent amount.

JBaby3435733d ago

Computers now have 16x DVD drives and higher but they didn't when DVD launched and neither did the PS2 or xbox. Should we have stuck with CDs then? The drive speed can be increased as the technology progresses and then there will be no argument. Give it a little time and until then there are creative ways around these things like Uncharted did and KZ2 as well as inFamous are doing to stream things.

jessupj5733d ago

Ffs not every bloody game is going to be the same as mgs4. It is one game, it does not respresent the entire ps3 library. So please desist with this flawed logic.

Right now developers are craming every little bit of data into the dvd. You would definitely see some developers take advantage of bluray if they had the option. Maybe not all but some.

Most 1st ps3 games could not be done on the 360, so yes, ps3 does get more because of blu ray.

Mass Effect = 45hrs game play DVD

MGS4 = 9hrs game play Blu-Ray

Blu-Ray FAILS

TheColbertinator5733d ago

I liked Mass Effect more than MGS4.But you are too ignorant from all the arguments with PS3 fanboys you've been dealing with.Your no different from Nasim.

Later.

Jeromejones5733d ago

completed mass effect in 16 hours finishing a good number of side quests aswell. It was kinda short for an RPG game. No way can people claim it to be a 45 hour game. It was a great game btw.

TheColbertinator5733d ago

Same here.I did like it.But it really was'nt 45 hours. Not even with the Bring Down the Sky DLC.I liked the conversation system. It was a trip.

Xheratuul5733d ago (Edited 5733d ago )

blu ray gives you uncompressed gameplay unlike oldgen dvds

Black ops 4, because it was the last cod of duty I was able to dominate with a +2 k/d ratio. Before all the freaking cheating started to happen. It was nice catching people off guard and shooting at them first and getting the kill. Unlike now, where I shoot people first, but they gun me down with less hits, less time, literally feels like they can kill me in a split second. At times, they are able to run away after me shooting them way more than necessary, yet, the second I'm spotted, I'm dead, there's no me running away to cover. They can do cartwheels, summersaults, backflips and gun you down perfectly. They can shoot you across the map with perfect accuracy. They can jump around like morons and gun you down without even having to correct their aim. They have superman split second perfect reactions. That's the best way to describe it, everything they do is spot on perfect. They can spam and spray (no praying) their gun from far away, because they have no recoil or bullet spread. It always feels like I have to aim and also correct my aim when moving around, while these pricks don't have to do the same.

And yes, I know how to play fps games. I dominated many fps games like: Resistance 1&2, kz 2&3, Socom, MAG, Crysis, Gotham City Impostors, blitz brigade etc. all with 2-4 k/d ratio. Kz2 (lag input controls) and resistance (no aim assist in resistance) being the hardest and were the games I reached either close to a 3 k/d ratio or above.

I truly got to enjoy blacks ops 4 and got my money's worth out of it. Afterwords, I would either stop playing cod games after a while, because of the cheating, or would skip buying cod games for a year or two before buying another.

Numbers 6-9 were some of my absolute favorite early gen PS3 games. I'm still bitter about Incognito and Japan Studio.

The white knight chronicles and infamous games really need to come to modern platforms. MAG I really miss...poor zipper. The ps3 was definitely a unique console despite it being the worst home console of PlayStation.
