This assclown from %&itbag makes me laugh. 10hrs for MGS4? Really? Even without watching the cutscenes there is easily 20 hours of game there. Easily longer than a game I really like - HALO3. I didn't disagree, but I don't think games (this gen) will ever be particularly held back by having DVD. Maybe if the 360 used only single-layer DVDs or the PS3 could use 4-layered blu-rays, there would be enough of a difference. The reason is, 50 may be bigger than 9, but 50 isn't bigger than 6 times 9. There's no reason a 360 game couldn't come on 6 disks. And having to swap disks is less of a pain than having to install the game for 3 minutes before each act in MGS4. Plus, I don't know how many games have actually come on a dual-layer blu-ray, I think it's only MGS4 that has. And even that only uses 33 Gb. That's 4 disks. And the game is split up into acts anyway, so if they'd had to fit it onto numerous DVDs it wouldn't have affected the game. The lack of cell processor and standard hard drive might have. Any game on a single-layer blu-ray wouldn't take up any more than 3 disks on 360. And that's really not a problem. The problem is lack of standard hard drive (don't tell me the hard drive is needed because of blu-ray being slow, it isn't, and the hard drive has only been used by devs to speed up their engine which they haven't optimised well for the cell) and the cell processor has a far larger theoretical performance than the 360's setup. The graphics cards are comparable.

John Carmack, one of the most brilliant game designers/game engine desingers of all time doesn't seem to support your theory that Blu-ray streams things as fast as DVD.

I think I will take his word over yours:

I don't think that's a blu-ray speed based issue. I think it's an architecture issue within the PS3. I believe him if he says that streaming is slower, but you DON'T need an install to do that. The actual read speeds of the blu-ray drive in the PS3 and the DVD drive in the 360 are very similar. Uncharted had no problem streaming data because it did it in advance before you got to that area, and cached it on the HDD (not an install) so it could load it much faster. Futhermore, hard disk streaming is MUCH faster than either blu-ray OR DVD streaming. So it is beneficial for the PS3 to have a hard drive even if it had a DVD drive instead of a blu-ray one.

the average speeds are similar, but if you put things that only need to be read once or twice every load towards the center, and things that get read every minute or less on the outside, you can increase streaming by a decent amount.

Computers now have 16x DVD drives and higher but they didn't when DVD launched and neither did the PS2 or xbox. Should we have stuck with CDs then? The drive speed can be increased as the technology progresses and then there will be no argument. Give it a little time and until then there are creative ways around these things like Uncharted did and KZ2 as well as inFamous are doing to stream things.

Right now developers are craming every little bit of data into the dvd. You would definitely see some developers take advantage of bluray if they had the option. Maybe not all but some.

His argument of game completion time being connected to size of the disc media is well... frankly rather uneducated. Disc size and game length are not necessarily tied to one another at all. The limitations still come from both the hardware, as well as developer skill and development time. I could make a game on a SNES cart that would last 80 hours. Or I could make a game on a Bluray that you can finish in 2. I dont know where the notion came from that bigger disc = longer game frankly, especially with developers propensity to push graphics before everything else when moving up to new hardware.

Not to mention, while I love my PS3 and think it provides a solid gaming experience, the use of BluRay would have been better suited to architecture with more Ram. All the space in the world to store textures, but it is limited by both development time (this is a business after all) as well as architecture.

Still, this is a silly argument. Larger media IS going to be needed, we are on the cusp of it, as can be seen from instances like Rage. Now we just need some smarter hardware and better development tools all around to assist the artists in being able to utilize it.

MGS4 is as long as you make it. It gives the player the choice of how he/she wants to proceed through the game.

I remember Torrence made a great point on a previous Warzone when he compared the open world of GTAIV to the "actual" world of MGS4.

In GTA, you had the whole city to explore but you couldn't enter any buildings unless it was scripted.

Now in MGS4, you could go pretty much any damn place you wanted to. Hey, there's a hole in this out of the way wall. - I can crawl through that.

What's up with that abandoned building? - I can break into it, make my way to the top floor, maybe even climb up a pile of junk to the roof and start sniping or sneak away from an altercation

Sure you can speed-run through MGS4 as you can with most games, but the combination of Blu-ray and a hardrive makes the illusion of "near infinite possibilities" possible.

That's something that the DVD storage medium is going to begin to struggle with in the near future. Heck, it's may already be starting now. Atleast Micro$oft is wisely allowing full disk installs now, which will help... unless you're a harddrive-less Arcade owner that is.

And I know that you can have multiple dvd's blaha blah blah, but you see one note-worthy developer "protesting" the cost paid to M$ for the use of additional disks. How soon before more devs join id in their cause. And even if M$ buckles and allows devs to make that 6-disk game without dues paid on each disk,how much would that game cost?

with multiplatform games you wont notice as much because as you learn in school, you always go with the lowest common denominator.. so for a game to look the same on both consoles you keep it around the 360's dvd9 so that neither has loss or benefit..

if you look first party games that have an inside knowledge on ps3 tech, those games run well with no installs and look amazing.. third party games that are multi require either porting or heavy installs as a shortcut.. second party developers take advantage of not having to compress but still dont know how to stream properly via the spu

you cant compare the benefit of a game that is meant to be equal on both 360 and ps3.

here is my example, and yes i've owned all 3 current systems:

ps3 exclusives

Uncharted = Looks amazing, one of its first reviews was a comment that went "this the first true next gen looking game" no installs ran so smooth a friend coudldnt tell where the cutscene and gameplay differed

Warhawk = multiplayer also looks great runs smooth, no issues what so ever, never read about or heard about a blu ray disc issue

Resistance = also ran great and the black levels were so on point, that you would feel that old horror movie/game feeling from being in a dark corridor.. the black levels really made you feel like the lights went out, the AI also was unforgiving on harder levels (this shows how streaming AI on one SPU separately from the other spu's gives better results)

metal gear solid 4 = now this one is third party exclusive.. uncompressed, runs smooth, looks amazing (hint they dirtied the visuals on purpose so that standard televisions could see great visual quality) long installs, huge maps that never repeated... each map was a new map not the same map redesigned.. thats how much space was used on the blu ray

all on one disc. also was mentioned that because of the size of the blu ray, a developer could copy parts of a map over and over in different sections of the disc allowing for faster read times due to less need for searching the disc for data (so a 9gb game could be copied twice even three times on blu ray for faster loading, something some developers are too lazy to do)

now onto the 360 exclusives

Halo 3 = ran well, no problems there, but it was barely a visual/audio upgrade compared to halo 2 on the original xbox

Mass Effect = great game content wise. but a game this large showed how old dvd9 is. long load times from area to area, frame rate drops, my character would jog in place every know and then. screen tears and grainy visuals during close ups, like someone smeared sand over someone's head.

Lost Odyssey = 4 discs due to size, load times

Blue Dragon = 4 discs due to size of game (i really liked this game)

Infinite Undiscovery = smoother better looking ps2 game. no real benefit over any already out rpg's.

Ninja Gaiden 2 = bad camera, issues with too many enemies on screen (what is sad about this one is that its the 3rd year the 360's been out, and its having first year ps3 issues that have now been non issue going into its 2nd year..)

Grand Theft Auto 4 = runs just about the same on both systems.. except that as is the 360 shows pop ups and a slightly slower loading time due to lack of installed data.

Devil May Cry 4 - due to lack of ps3 knowledge this ran the same with both systems but needed that silly install, i say silly because i think the developer didnt want to try to learn the ps3.. this one game that did not need an install had it been done right.. even still since they lead with the 360 this game also only looked and played like a better ps2/xbox game.

Burnout Paradise = one of the few third party games that used the ps3 as the lead console. while they still kept the common denominator factor in place so that one does not look greatly better than the other, using the ps3 as the lead allowed them to compress down to the 360 as opposed to uncompressing upward to the ps3. most developers are learning that ps3 makes the better lead console even for an equal game for both systems, lucas arts also stated this and will make ps3 the lead console in the future for all their games...

A little biased aren't we? Funny how you put up all ps3's heavy hitters and seemed to have forgotten about a game called Gears of War. Still one of the top 3 prettiest games this gen (alongside MGS 4 and Uncharted).
You also fail to mention all the installs for MGS4 and the fact at certain scenes right in the middle of action the game would just load. Why is this stuff never mentioned about ps games yet for 360 its always shouted to the mountain tops???
Why does Call of Juarez never get mentioned? I mean the game wasn't the greatest but graphically that game was outstanding. Not to mention the textures that it offered.

That has nothing to do with DVD9. The biggest problem is the texture streaming.

The only way you are going to see better games on blu ray is if developers take advantage of the blu ray disc. If you are on putting in 9 gig of data on a blu ray or you are cutting and pasting a 360 game onto a blu ray then yes blu ray doesn't matter. Really, the only big advantage is extra storage space. When the extra storage is used you see better looking and sounding games, MGS4, Uncharted, ratch and clank etc. Example, you don't see a difference with bioshock on the ps3 because guess what? 2K didn't take advantage of the blu ray, the cell or anything else. All they did was cut and paste so what do you expect. It also doesn't help that some developers are down scaling multiplatform games to under 9 gigs just so they don't gimp the 360 version which is always their cash cow. This is why most of the first party/Exclusive PS3 games always seem to look and sound better because blu ray is more likely to be taken advantage of. Now you can have a game that looks and sounds great, but is a wack game too but that's another argument.

BR speed is roughly equal to the DVD in the XB360. Games like Uncharted works great without an install - and it is one of the most beautifull games out there.

The size of BR is an advantage for games. XB360 launched early without HD-DVD because the year lead would be lost. Now the games content suffers due to this. Content is now split over mutliple DVD's, and in some cases - like a racing game, you will have to pair certain cars with tracks.

Imagine a Gran Turismo with 500 tracks and 500 cars. With Forza on XB360 you will not be able to do the same. Firstly due the lack of HD - you cannot install for example all the tracks or all the cars - so you will have to live with never being able to race with some cars on some tracks. Due to the size of car models and track data - this is inevetable.

i dont know what you mean with mgs4, i havent seen or heard about that. i've never had that issue.

but i did forget to mention gears of war. a good game that plays, runs and looks great.

but that one also goes back to the same issue of size.. its a lot of rooms redesigned.. and only epic could pull it off and make it work as well as it did........

mainly due to the fact that epic owns the unreal engine so they know hot to tweak the engine (thats another reason why third parties fail, they need their own engine not someone elses) they try someone elses engine and then slap on a story and model and then squeeze it into the ps3 and 360.

call of jaurez i never even rented when i had my 360 due to its poor reviews but your not the only person to tell me how good it looked.

as for the stuff mentioned not mentioned on ps3 games but on 360 it is, i say its the reverse.. heavenly sword and many games get slammed when in fact they are great games..

but mass effect issues are ignored. every msbot reviewer said the game too human was bad but its worth it to play it and give it the benefit of the doubt and that issues aside its a must buy.. you never hear them say that about ps3 games that are of the same if not better quality.

-Blu-ray does add to the experience even more then DVD. Cuz of Blu-ray you have better physics, better A.I, and more enemies , and the ability to have better graphics.
Exclusives on PS3 prove this and some games are starting to show they need more space if they want to get that big game that they want.
ex.) Rage, Doom 4, Wolfenstein, Bioshock, etc. -Are games that need big space and big processing power PS3's Blu-ray is giving them that opportunity to make bigger games.
These are all just signs as games get bigger so do the graphics, space, worlds, etc. and Blu-ray is the key to making those big games.

-PS3 already has the edge.
September- SOCOM. Nuff said.
October- LBP, Bioshock, Far Cry 2, etc.
November- Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, Mirror's Edge, etc. (It'll still be really close w/ Gears 2 also
December- White Knight Chronicles, only 2 months away from Killzone 2, Infamous, and War Devil,
2009 & B3YOND- PS3 takes over!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm still gonna get a 360 this Winter for some exclusives on that console but PS3 is my main choice for gaming.

It's a great time to be a gamer for any console regardless of what you own.

Clearly the time is coming that the PS3 exclusive games are becoming bigger. Last time that the FUD can have some effect.

There comes a time with the higher quality audio, textures and models - that it will be easier to add more content than to try and slim it down to a managable level.

Whoever tries to argue that Blu-ray is not better than DVD is an idiot, regardless of what PS3 games have shown to be. If Heavenly Sword is short, then either Blu-ray wasn't used to its fullest, or they crammed tons of languages into a single disc, which is great but it should be a secondary priority. I like learning languages but honestly I rather have a lengthy game than a short game with every language known to men.

Anyway, the reason it hasn't shown in games is because it would be too expensive for developers just to add tons of extra content which take a lot of time to make, content which can't be put in the 360 because the HDD is optional and too small, and its media is also too small. So basically it's up to Sony to show longer games. Then again these don't need to be longer games, just games with better quality assets like sound, video and textures among other things.

The games that would benefit the most from Blu-ray are sports games (sadly, most are multiplatform), racing games (GT5 should benefit from this), open world games (which is why GTAIV was smaller than San Andreas), fighting games, and in general games that require everything to be loaded from just one disc, games that are a single "level" or "world" at once (like a City) instead of games with dozens of levels which you complete linearly. There just needs to be a game with a level that goes over DVD9's capacity to prove Blu-ray is needed, and that game could be the next Gran Turismo (but judging by Prologue, I doubt since it's a relatively small download), or another open world game but sadly L.A. Noire appears to be multiplatform (hopefully not), so it would have to be the secret rockstar game, heavy rain if it's open world which I doubt, FFVersusXIII which is rumored to be like classic FF in the sense that you traveled all around a single world (which is why FFX would have been impossible to pull off on the Gamecube or Dreamcast due to media constraints), etcetera.

I just hope that such game (or games) come out, but it's doubtful. However, even if it doesn't come out, it wouldn't prove blu-ray to be useless, it would simply prove it was too expensive to develop such an immersive game or that Sony failed, but not that Blu-ray wasn't needed. Blu-ray sure as hell is needed, here's hoping that what the Houser brothers said about GTA5 comes true.

BTW, If Kojima's game is really 33GB, why did he complain about Blu-ray being too small anyway? He should have made it longer if he really had such complaints.

While Blu-ray definitely has the potential to make games extraordinary it hasn't done it to the level I was expecting yet. I think it certainly will but as of yet I haven't seen any game super long or just huge to show its advantage. I think and am hoping inFamous will show the need because the city is supposed to be MASSIVE and streams so no loading so that will be sick. Killzone 2 also looks to prove high capacity disc benefits with incredibly large levels (2 gigs a piece) but the game is not supposed to actually be longer than most although no one can argue the detail of it so Blu-ray is showing its worth in that respect.

In the future I think Blu-ray will be essential but as of now it's just coming into its own.

If you really want to compare apple to apple here, In order for you to your own fair comparison 1.You must own/or get a HDTV that can display 1080p 2.360 Elite (HDMI) or Composite Cable for Core users and PS3. and really sit down and do you own analysis me personally PS3 games look better way better to those of you who are still using SDTV need to up seriously upgrade it is a world of difference once you go HD you won't go back everything is so tight. We haven´t seen the best on Blu-Ray yet.
But its a really great format. Why?
Just forget about HD and space and all that (which is all great and true). Why does BD really matter to me?
One of the best things with PSP games - Multiregional. No split regions, no different display formats.
It also stops piracy much like it took a fair while in order for people to copy PS2 games.
