HDR In Gaming, What it is, And What It Means For You.

So by now everyone has seen and heard of the new Xbox One S, Microsoft’s new “slim” iteration of the Xbox One console. The Xbox One S also packs some new features, including HDR. What is HDR? How does it effect picture quality in gaming?

It's too early for 4K gaming it's even worst with HDR. Most 2015-2016 UHD TV are not compatible.

Doopy2909d ago

You can get a 4k tv for a cheap price.

Fin_The_Human2909d ago

I got a 55 inch Samsung 4K TV for $800.00 and that was regular price.

killer8762909d ago (Edited 2909d ago )

I have a 55 inch tcl Roku 4k TV 2016 model for 500.

OpenGL2908d ago

Cheap 4K TVs don't support HDR though.

ORyanDeee2908d ago

yeah i saw one recently for $412 was 46 inch

Bahamut2908d ago

Am I the only one who is not interested in 4k? I'd rather purchase a new 1080p 3D OLED to tbh. The colors are better than plasma, but it has the brightness and low energy consumption of an LED.

The benefits of using a 4k TV are hardly noticeable when sitting a reasonable distance from the television anyway. Of course, if you're sitting less than 6 feet away from a 50 or 60 inch display, you're going to be seeing some details, but I'd rather sit a comfortable distance away. Not to mention that 4k support is still not very common, leaving you to watch or play most things at 1080p, which ends up looking worse than it would on a 1080p due to all of the artifacting on the 4k display.

Anyway, check out OLED if you haven't already.

ShadowKnight2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

Bahamut is right. The only reason I bought a 4K tv was because I wanted to take advantage of my gpu

https://carltonbale.com/doe...

Dario_DC2908d ago

Yeah you can with a ton of input lag! No thanks

darthv722908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

My take on this whole thing is... HDR is to the Xb1 slim what HDMI was to the 360. Providing an improved image output over the initial offering.

Component on the 360 wasn't bad but HDMI just improved the clarity and crispness. Lack of HDR on the Xb1 is not bad but with it on the slim it will improve the color depth and image quality.

It's not to often that you get improvements with a revision for the same price but so far MS has done it two generations in a row. Most revisions remove features as a means to save $$.

Nathan_Hale532908d ago

Or you can get a good 1080p tv for a fraction of the cost.

KillerPwned2908d ago

Yeah you can get a 4K TV really cheap but the technology hasn't caught up to what the consumer truly desires in terms of real 4K video. I would at least give it till mid next year before buying a 4K TV. I will possibly get one around then for the PS4 Neo.

Servbot412908d ago

Development speed and cost is the issue, not the TV price.

shaenoide2908d ago

An UHD TV with à good HDR support cost at least 2000 buck ATM...

4k=/=HDR...

Pennywise1382908d ago

Yeah I just got this years Samsung flagship tv 65 inch 4K HDR tv for 2 thousand. Well worth it. I've seen good 4K tvs for cheaper than I paid for my Samsung 46 inch HD tv just 6 years ago. 4ks are about as common now as HD tvs were when the PS3 came out and especially when x-box 360 came out.

2908d ago
Foehammer2908d ago

It's truly hilarious

ppl are saying they will run out and get a $400 peripheral (VR), that only one person can enjoy, but not a HDR tv.

All of a sudden resolution and colour can be too high, lol

vickers5002908d ago

@dario

I bought a Vizio 4k tv (m series, good reviews) for only 600 bucks and it has pretty good input lag, only 20ms. Really good for a tv from what I've read.

4k is affordable as far as tvs go. Don't know much about hdr, but what little 4k content I've played on my tv looked amazing, and I'm actually excited MS is pushing 4k so hard, means Sony probably will too.

rainslacker2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

Not all 4K TV's support HDR. Most that are reasonably priced(not bargain off brands) usually do nowadays though, although HDR really looks best, and seems to have the most effect on mid-high range TV's. Samsungs that are 800+ for the 55" are if they were made starting last year. I think all Sony and LG one's in production are now HDR.

If people don't look for HDR, and buy a TV without it, their TV is already outdated, and will not play HDCP2.2 content(UHD movies, shouldn't be a factor for games). So it's certainly something to look for.

Actaully they are , if your 4K TV from 2015 have HEVC coding in them , then any new ultra HD device works on it.

HDR technology is standered now in ultra HD TVs , and 2015 models will get updates to them by sofware to allow HDR.

Even if you don't have HDR , 4K output still works on 4K TVs , providing your tv has the correct coding , basically Xbox one s will play uhd blu Ray movies , with or without HDR if your tv is 4K you can enjoy it

HDR is only a bit sharper in colours , no one really notices the difference bettwen 4K and 4K HDR , unless you got a 80 inch tv

If people disagree with this statement then it means they know nothing about 4ktv and and not aware about ... It's fact that HDR is the new standered for 4K TVs, 2015 models will get updated through the networks , lg and Sony have already started updating certain TV models

4ktv needs HEVC coding to run any hdmi 4K device and needs hdmi 2.0a to get 60 frames on 4K, 2013/14 models do not have that ... If you got a Samsung tv you can update it buy buying the update kit , depending on your model

People need to read things instead of just saying ooo a 4K Xbox one s , play it on a HD tv and complain that you can't get 4K content

stiggs2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

@Sweendog07

I appreciate the effort that you put forth in writing your comment. Unfortunately it is primarily composed of fallacies and erroneous statistics.

"HDR is only a bit sharper in colours , no one really notices the difference bettwen 4K and 4K HDR , unless you got a 80 inch tv "

HDR has nothing to do with the size of the screen. HDR is a set of standards assigned to panels which can display a higher contrast ratio and wider color gamut. HDR panels must be able to process 10 bit color signals. This specification expands the amount of available colors from 16 million to over one billion and increases the dynamic range across the entire panel. HDR video will look superior to standard HD video on a 10" tablet or 70" UHDTV.

" 2015 models will get updated through the networks "

A handful of newer TVs (Sony) will receive software updates to enable HDR . But this update will only be applicable to those TVs with the HDR capability already built into the panel. If your TV is incapable of HDR then no update will change that aspect. A few manufactures may release a software based "solution" but the result will be inferior to native HDR panels. Samsung has released a $400 HDR add on for certain TVs but you may as well buy a new TV at that point.

"4ktv needs HEVC coding to run any hdmi 4K device"

The HEVC (H.265) compression standard It is not necessary to display an image on a 4K HDTV. H.264 (MPEG-4), the most widely used codec, is perfectly capable of compressing and decompressing a 4K image. Besides, the ability for a HDTV to decompress a particular codec is usually irrelevant because that process is typically handled by the delivery system (XBOX, PS4, Roku, etc).

"People need to read things"

I wasn't being sarcastic when i said that I appreciate your effort. But I think that it was completely unnecessary for you to call out others for their "ignorance". Perhaps you should take your own advice and do some research before you post another comment full of misinformation.

Sweendog0072908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

It's not being ingnorant at all its stating facts .., I gave the short version because a lot of people don't understand technology stuff

The whole point is people seem to refuse to see the change around them and expect things to work that my friend is ignorant and refusing to read a product you are buying

There was an issue in the coding for format of ultra HD, that was correct and ultra HD TVs we're added with the correct input or upgraded version by kits. You can still play 4K content through the 4K output ... Example , Xbox one s will play 4K blu Ray on 4K settings with or without HDR ... If you have HDR the experience becomes better , but you still get the 4K picture

People who constantly say 4K is not taking off are ignorant to the world around them ... 4K may not be taking off in every country but it's moving very fast to the point where 4K ultra HD discs and movies are aviable to buy , people seem to think that these dics play on the current Xbox one or ps4 which they don't

And it's not miss leading information at all ... 2016 models of ultra HD now have a HDR sticker on the box , late 2015 and some early models will get updates this was announced at Las Vegas in January

HDR is only noticeable to most people on TVs bigger than 65 ... 4K content is only noticeable on TVs that are 45 plus that's why you hardly get smaller TVs with 4K screens no can see the difference

I am simple stating facts that people refuse to read or unwilling to accept because they don't want change or believe it ... 4K is real and alive and not a gimmick people need to stop running it down and look around and stop taking things face vaule and read information. ... Everyone who jumped on the 4K market in 2013 won't be able to play any hdmi device that is 4K and can only get 4K through nextflix

stiggs2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

"HDR is only noticeable to most people on TVs bigger than 65"

I'm not trying to insult you but do you even understand the concept behind HDR? You seem to be confusing HDR with 4K resolution.

It has often been reported that some individuals have difficulty discerning the difference between 720P, 1080P and 4K images on small displays (depending on their proximity to the image). I do think that there is some merit to how these studies inform your opinion.

But, I can immediately recognize the difference between a HDR and non-HDR image...even on my 6" phone. Frankly, I can't fathom anyone failing to differentiate between HDR and standard displays. The disparity between the two formats is that extreme.

I can see that you are passionate about 4k/HDR, which is cool. I just think that you are a bit misinformed and it may serve the platform better if you posted more accurate information.

TheCommentator2908d ago

Stiggs is right. HDR is actually more noticible than an upgrade to 4K because it overdrives certain pixels to make lighting in a particular scene appear brighter than the other objects within that environment. In that way, a sheet of paper will not appear to have the same intensity as the lamp illuminated on the desk beside it.

The size of the tv is irrelevant to the changes HDR brings to image quality.

jc122908d ago

My Samsung 65" 4K TV came HDR ready. I haven't bought a 4K player yet though, so I can't comment on its efficacy.

mark3214uk2908d ago (Edited 2907d ago )

"HDR technology is standered now in ultra HD TVs , and 2015 models will get updates to them by sofware to allow HDR. "

that is not true, it is not the software that produces HDR it is the BIT of the panel

10 Bit=HDR 4K, Having a 8/6 Bit panel like most 2015 tv's and you cant view HDR

conanlifts2908d ago

I bought a samsung js8000, which was a 2015 model. It was samsungs 2nd from top model tv and the entry level hdr compatible tv. Anything below this from 2015 is not hdr compatible from samsung. Basically suhd, quantum dots etc. Anything else doesn't do hdr.

HDR often makes more of a difference in picture quality than 4k does.

bolimekurac2908d ago

some 2014 models do have it such as the 78hu9000 and others like it, also you can add thew evolution kit and it also adds hdr to 2014 models

SojournUK2908d ago

I've got a 55" Samsung 'quantum dot' ( SUHD) screen and I can see the difference when a HDR supported movie/show is on, my tv is 25" smaller than your suggested 80".

rainslacker2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

@OP

not all models may be capable of receiving the update though. It depends on the HDMI controller chip used within the TV. Most made in 2015 or later should be alright, although some of the bargain ones may still be using hardware from 2013-2014, so one should look for that UHD/HDR labeling on the TV when making a purchase. Would suck if they find their cheap TV they brought for $500 won't actually give them what they are looking for. I kind of got lucky, because when I brought my TV I didn't know this whole screw the consumer due to copy protection crap was going on....although that's not directly related to HDR.

@stiggs

Appreciate the effort. Since I got my TV, and found my rather recently purchased receiver I brought because it said it supported 4K will not be supported with HDCP2.2, I've been trying to stress people need to research up on 4K before taking the dive. I'd hate for them to drop $500+ on a TV which is already outdated for the new UHD/HDR standards. That would piss me off, and I'm sure a lot of people are going to become pissed off if they go to invest in UHD and 4K....particularly 4K since the damn 4K label is slapped on everything and most people are ignorant of the different specs.

Outside of that, HDR should be noticeable on any size screen. It has more to do with picture quality in the colors and contrast. Doesn't really have anything to do with resolution or screen size.

4k gaming is too high at the moment for me so I'll just stick with 1080p for now. Not that resolution really matters any way.

Brotard2908d ago

No. Most 2016 tvs are compatible and a lot of 2015 were compatible. Because it was simply a firmware update.

JasonKCK2908d ago

I got the same TV as killer876 with a now overpriced BR player.

Stop trying so hard shaenoide, it's not really working out for ya.

jc122908d ago

4K HDR compatible TV's are actually quite affordable now. You can get a 2016 40" 4K HDR Samsung TV right now for $697. Not too bad really.

Sweendog0072908d ago

People don't want to admit that 4K is changing how we view media.

HDR is basically the the colour and contrast , deeper blacks and higher whites

Most 2015 models have the screens to support HDR and a software update can be provided ( depending on model to unlock HDR in TVs ) , 4K TVs are not all the same and it's only this year that they are being brought together as the same technology

2013/14 models don't even support 4K through HDMI out out and devices that have 4K in them through set up boxes and can only get their content up scaled or watch 4K in Netflix.

The manufactures jumped too far a head across the world when the standered 4K format was not complete and finalised. It's only last year they got the specications right ... That's why it took so long to get UHD dics.

It's all negtivtie stuff on this site because people are getting confused on what is 4K and facts about how it , he'll most people just look at a 4K tv and say that looks brighter better than what I got and buy it

4K content is growing rapidly and TVs are becoming more affordable. People who refuse to see it and moan about it are just not seeing the changes around them or don't see the point in it

rainslacker2908d ago

I wouldn't say a few. As of 2016, most mid range+ will support it. Some better than others. 2015, about half supported it, and in 2014, it was kind of a premium feature. Many of the mid range ones being sold right now were made in 2015 though, but a lot of them do have the new hardware required installed or it was already present. If you purchased a Samsung TV, you may want to call their customer support. They are pretty good about that stuff, and may send a guy out to upgrade your TV. I've heard other say they'll charge a fee, but it wasn't much. Depending on the hardware inside the TV, you may be able to update via firmware if it's a smart TV.

I read your comments clearly , 4K content is more popular now ... You want 4K content you buy Xbox one , cheaper than Uhd blu Ray players and plays games

Directx12 was introduced last year and has helped graphics in games look much better and sharper and able to run 1080 now in a lot of games rather than 900, up scaled.

Cloud gaming is well up in the air , lol no punt intended, but it is , cloud needs a lot more power than what Xbox one is offering my guess is it will be used a lot more in Scorpio , or they are trying new technologies to enhance the cloud experience

Ms are giving players more choice more freedom ... No one gets left behind you buy the console that suits you

starrman19852908d ago

High Dynamic Range isn't just a made up none existent saying that Microsoft have fabricated, just like DirectX 12 (granted that will effect PC users more than the Xbox one)

You will absolutely be able to tell the difference between a game outputting in standard ranges and HDR. Just look at some photos in HDR and standard and you'll see the difference, the contrast, colours etc will be much crisper. It can actually make things look surreal so it might not be every ones cup of tea but it certainly IS a real thing.

The Cloud is also very real, however making a game that utilises it would get ripped to shreds by the public because it would require a constant online connection and a decent one at that.

And please don't act like you "support" Microsoft when you so clearly don't, owning an Xbox One doesn't make you a supporter if you disagree with everything the company tells you... it just makes you a hypocrite.

andresegr2908d ago

Im well aware that HDR is a real thing, but it wont change anything in the grand scale of things, it is just a cool thing to have just like it is cool to have 7.1 sound instead of 5.1.

Im not disagreeing with everything that Microsoft tell me. Im just...realistic.

Im not the kind of person who gets hyped with the tiniest things.

Deadpooled2908d ago

Of course HDR is definitely real it's in most mid to high end cameras nowadays and even implemented in smartphonesl, surprised by these naysayers denying the use and benefits of HDR

starrman19852908d ago

@andresegr - So you've gone from it being a PR stunt to a cool thing to have? That's quite a change of opinion!

Microsoft were never really pushing it as a huge monumental change, they were just saying that the Xbox One S HAS it, it's a cool feature and it will make some games look really nice, I imagine games like Sea of Thieves will look glorious with HDR.

"HDR...another senseless hype train in the...long list of irrelevant non existent things"

HDR is considered by many experts to be a larger leap in imaging technology than HD resolution. If you are going to attempt make a compelling argument against HDR then perhaps it may be in your best interest to actually recognize and comprehend the technology. Saying "it's not even real" makes you sound like an imbecile.

Don't knock HDR until you've seen it.

conanlifts2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

HDR is very real and will make a difference. A 900p fully supported hdr Game will look better than a 1080p non hdr game on a 4k hdr tv set.
If you look at 4k tv reviews it is often stated that 4k makes a nice difference but hdr is where the picture now shines.
Think oled tv colour on an led screen. ( almost anyway)

rainslacker2908d ago (Edited 2908d ago )

Technically speaking, it doesn't take more to render HDR since it's a post render process. The current Xbox One would be capable of it, however it can't output at HDR due to the HDMI standard used. HDR requires 22Gb/s speed, and the X1 is only capable of 17Gb/s speed. I don't know if that would be firmware upgradable or not.

Also, MS didn't make HDR. It's an display standard for TV's and monitors. I can't imagine what empty promise they would make here. They either can do it, or they can't. Won't make a difference on the development side, nor will games have to be specifically coded for it. All games, past, present and future, should see benefits.

It doenst matter if the 4k tv are cheap. There isnt enough content and people are happy with the 1080 tv. This means it will take years until 30 or 40 % buy a 4k tv. At this time not even 10 % got one.

Bt sports in the uk and Espn in the states is 4K

Sky launched 4K boxes in Sky q silver , with all sports broadcasting in 4K this August.

4K gaming has been around for 2 years now and more popular than ever

Phones and tablets are now 4K too along with desktops and laptops

Go and look at things and read up on it , the champions league final was watched more in 4K through bt sports ultra HD and YouTube 4K than any other devices

It's amazing that people dislike this comment when it's fact , makes no sense to dislike something that is fact ... Just because people refuse to accept change does not mean it's not happing around you , you can only close your eyes for so long but it won't change the reality. I have to say your arguments here for 4k and what HDR actually is are terribly wrong.

We have one 4k cell phone, and it doesnt run at 4k all the time, made by Sony.. you my friend are geeing confused with Quad HD screens on phones.

We have 3 4k channels with Direct TV here in the States.

Samsung nor Sony make a 4k tablet, Samsung have a quad HD Samoled screen, again not 4k.

Also 4k TV`s cannot be upgraded to HDR unless the panel is compliant which most 2015 and older screens are not... hence the release of more 2016 models .

As of December 2015 only one third of households had 4k tv`s so you are close with your one in 4, but your 7 in 10 is wrong and you read that online incorrectly, its expected sales are set top increase by 74%... thats 74% of the 30% not 74% overall.
