NVIDIA GTX1080 Officially Announced, Faster Than Two GTX980s In SLI & The Titan X

NVIDIA has officially revealed the GTX1080. According to the company, the GeForce GTX 1080 features Pascal architecture, 16nm Finfet, GDDR5X, a beautiful design, and new graphics tech. What’s really interesting here is that NVIDIA claimed that the GTX1080 is faster than two GTX980 in SLI and faster than the Titan X.

Cool cant wait for the conference. Same HBM2 seems quite interesting. Really excited to see what AMD brings to the table, the 400 series is finally meant to be power efficient. As a owner of a R9 280 I must say I haven't experienced any of the stereotypes and the Crimson drivers haven't been bad. Also as of lately they have been punctual with driver support. If the GTX 1060 is a decent price might get that but at the same time wouldn't mind going back to AMD. Nonetheless great time to be in the market for an upgrade :)

Frosty, 3440 x 1440 is an ultra wide resolution that many UHD monitors have. Ever notice the black bars on 4k movies? Imagine no black bars. Also, it is more likely that these new games will run at 60 fps with the 1080 at this resolution than at 3840 x 2160. It is a good in between resolution.

Ironically, Sony Warrior, the PS4 has an AMD GPU in it... and to add insult to injury the GTX 1080 still doesn't support FL12.0 because it has no ACEs. Nvidia is actually falling behind the curve as of late.

Tap My Buttons, if you do invest in a GTX1080, you'll be able to use DX12's Explicit Multi Adapter to run a new AMD card (like Polaris or Vega) right along with it and get both FL12.0 and FL12.1 processing in one rig.

On my Acer X34 Predator, I maintain 60+ on most games with a single 980ti. Witcher 3 does dip into the 40s however, Gsync makes up for any sub-60fps dips. This 1080 should ensure that even THAT game stays above 60fps. I'll sell my 980ti when the non-reference 1080ti cards are released. Until then, a single 980ti on a 3440x1440p (w/gysnc/freesync) monitor is easily good enough for most games at max.

Yep, Gsync is awesome. I have a 1440p Gsync monitor and even my overclocked GTX 970 drives it fairly well. Actual framerates depend on the game of course, but even the most demanding games generally stay above 30fps. Most run much higher than that. Either way, it all stays consistently smooth.

The reason I am still going to get either a GTX 1070 or a GTX 1080 is because I am an enthusiast gamer and I can. Specifically, though, I want to be able to run high levels of downsampling (DSR) to get super clean image quality while simultaneously achieving higher framerates. My monitor refreshes up to 144hz, so I'd like to utilize more of that high framerate ceiling. The faster the framerate is the better the controller response and visual feedback are, and movement looks more liquid smooth and natural.

Take that performance with a grain of salt.

It's faster than 2 980 in SLI, which is a huge achievement, but it's also not 100% Apples to Apples.

The 1080 was clocked to 2114Mhz, which is SIGNIFICANTLY more than most base 980's and literally almost 2x the core clock speed, which realistically puts the 1080 as a slightly better GTX 980Ti with absolutely insane over-clocking capabilities performance wise, which isn't a bad thing at all especially since they're priced about the same.

We won't see the real jump Pascal has to offer until 2018 once the architecture has been fully mastered, and HBM is maximized within that architecture. We also haven't heard anything about DX12 performance (which shouldn't that big of a deal for these cards), or A-Sync Compute (which is the real question that needs answering).

However, these are still amazing cards especially the 1070 which brings 980Ti / Titan levels of performance for the $400 price range, which is absolutely wonderful for every PC enthusiast. To me this is the biggest news of the 1000 line-up. Once again the XX70 series is simply blowing away the price : performance ratio, and delivering insane performance at an incredible value.

So overall

1080 = GTX TitanX with absolutely insane over-clocking for the price of a GTX 980 Ti
1070 = GTX 980 Ti remake, for the price of a GTX 970 (amazing deal)

It's true though. The benchmarks have shown the 1080 only to have a 15% improvement over an overclocked 980ti. Let's say you can overclock the 1080 around 20%.. that's only a 35% improvement.

Going off the specs we know (i.e. TFLOPs) the 1070 appears to be 28% slower than the 1080. The difference was 21% between the 970 and 980.

So yeah, the GTX 1080 does have a larger lead over the GTX 1070. It just isn't as big of a difference as you are saying.

You are forgetting the 1070 will be clocked lower and has slower memory than the 1080. It also has over 500 more cores disabled when compared to the 1080. The 1080 is going to be about 20% faster than the 980ti. The 1070 is not going to be faster than the 980ti. It's going to fall between the 980Ti and 980.

I've had primarily AMD cards and went with Nvidia 970 recently. AMD is usually more budget friendly, however the issue is that some developers don't necessarily develop certain features to work properly with AMD cards. Whereas they do with nvidia such as gameworks or the hair physics in Witcher 3. Shit happens sometimes. Look at your own budget and what you feel comfortable spending and see what fits into that.

Lots of games also use Nividias gameworks which tends to make the game run like crap on AMD cards. Most people will tell you to buy Nividia just for the support alone. But neither side is a saint, Nividia released a driver just last month that bricked/corrupted a few pc's according to reports. Personally i have a nividia 750tisc and im really happy with it, but ive been looking at AMD for upgrades because of the price/performance ratio. However the 1070 is really tempting me now

Its quite old. You most likely need to overclock your cpu if you don't want to switch out exactly everything in it. The biggest problem is your graphic cards. I would wait for the 1070 card and get one of those.

If you could stretch that budget a bit then I'd recommend getting the 1070 when it comes out. If not, the 970s and 980s will be coming down in price id imagine. Assuming the ram you have is DDR3?? 12GB of that will be fine.
Cpu is only average at best it seems but you might be OK with it for a little while. It's definitely gonna bottleneck you on newer games though.

I agree, if SLI works properly in the desired game. So many recent games don't support it. Rise of the Tomb Raider and Dark Souls 3 are the two games that have utilized it, that i have played anyway, this year.

In games like gears of war, arkham knight, quantum break, the 1080 will beat 2 980tis, as one of them is a paper weight.

Am hoping AMD announcing there cards ASAP. I have a 970 at the moment and that 1080 looks tasty indeed. If no AMD announcement by the 1080 arrives. Then ill just get the 1080.

I paid around 300 for the gtx 970 and that was around the time it released. Been all set since.

Right so I...like many others had a PC to begin with...just decided I gonna game on it so I bought a card.

A PC isn't a gaming PC until it has a graphics card. So it only cost me 300$ to start gaming on PC.

Please do explain...cuz I can only think of one thing. Power Supply. Done. PC's are not as complicated and uncompatible as you think.

Um doesn't work that way, you cant just slap a card into any PC and it will work, there's these things called requirements on the side of the box and if that PC cant handle that video card guess what you're upgrading power supply, memory, possibly the processor, and maybe even the whole mother board. And really none of that changes the fact that all that together no matter at what point it was purchased still overall costs significantly more then a console, which was my point to begin with.

Man! I really wanna build a new pc! Mine is dated ([email protected], 6870s CF) . 1gb vram is killing me . Waiting to see what AMD does this year. I thought of going with a nvidia gpu, but I've always preferred AMD. These specs sound awesome on the card. I'm sure it's pricey!

Nothing forces you to keep up with the fastest and latest hardware out there. If you are just gaming in 1080p then these new cards are overkill anyway.

I was getting excited about picking up the new PS4 Neo then this mega ton dropped. If the claims are true then this is probably the biggest tech jump in gaming since the introduction 3D acceleration. AMD would be hard pressed to have a counter punch for this. For the price, this kind of performance is mind blowing. All the GTX 970 and 980 on the store shelves are basically dead GPUs walking.

So I've decided to get back into PC gaming, and going for Nividia. I hear AMD is good to but I hear that AMD takes a long time to update drivers. I need to know from experience which some of you guys prefer and based on performance with top tier AAA games how well Nvidia and AMD perform. My budget is very open. I am going with Intel as my CPU. Also going for Multi GPU setup too for those few games that actually support it just future proofing it a bit.
