How This Gen Is a Complete Opposite of Last Gen: Illustrated

"It's hard to believe but we've already passed one year of current gen gaming. So how far have we changed? Well, honestly things seem to have taken an unexpected turn for the most part. The simple table I made (which kinda took me a while to do) illustrates what I'm talking about."

It says the Wii had lots of 3rd party support, and while that might be true, 99% of that 3rd party support was terrible shovelware.

If you define winning as selling the most systems then yes the Wii won. If you extrapolate that further into the number of software to hardware ratio then the wii pales in comparison to the 360 and ps3.

The platform companies (Nintendo, Sony, MS) like to look at the overall picture of software sales to consoles. It gives them the best representation of where the consumer confidence is in their product.

All of them obviously would love to see high number of units but are even more enthralled by the number of game hours played on the platforms. That tells them that people arent just buying their system but playing it for hours on end as well.

The attach rate was pretty high for 360/PS3 in comparison to the wii. So while nintendo won in unit sales, they lost in the software sales which is where these companies make the bulk of their return.

mikeslemonade3475d ago

Wii sold more first party games therefore they made the most money. Multiplats like COD and GTA are only like one dollar profit for Sony and Microsoft.

You can argue that it was a last-last gen game or the fact that they got lucky.. But they won in both install base and software sales profit.

vishmarx3475d ago (Edited 3475d ago )

its funny when you say that wii u didnt have many great games besides exclusives , wii fanboys will put you down saying it sold the most so wii wins.
but when you say ps4 is selling the most , they put you down by saying wiu u has the exclusives so it wins

either way a nintendo fanboy always wins.

and off course, the mention of 3rd party games is still sacrilegious to them so theyll act like they they dont exist.
as much s*** as they would have given bayonetta last gen , they now call it the best game of last gen and 2 the GOTY since now its entered nintendo territory.

@Sincere0121

lol there is nothing 'core' about wii u.getting 2 cancelled they people may or may not have bought does not make it a core console. it still strives on mario and pal and thats that. infact bayonetta bombing in sales despite the reviews and all the bragging is a pretty clear indicator of the fact that wii u fanbase doesnt care about these games and only use them as a tool to compete with ps4/xb1 users

SolidStoner3475d ago

we all know that cheap cars are not best.. but they sell like cookies! Many of them have the build quality of cookies.. (I just say what I think about Wii)

Yes, third party support was an issue for the Wii last gen, even though it technically won the generation

Chrischi19883475d ago

In terms of sales, you know, that thing you PS4 guys hold up like the holy grail. Winning in a gen, doesnt mean, it attracted the most core gamers. Core gamer are a small portion of the whole gaming community and I am literally sick and tired of people like you, who always define the term winning new, just so nintendo does look bad. You guys always hammer sales numbers and act like you guys are somehow superior because of it and if somebody does the same thing, the winning has to be defined new, so Nintendo can still look bad.

Nevers0ft3475d ago

@Neixus
Easiest definition would be how profitable it was... And the Wii lined Nintendo's coffers to almost crazy proportions. Is that a win for consumers? Nope, but it's a win.

CrowbaitBob3475d ago

It definitely walked away with the nursing home market.

The lack of 3rd party support has always been an issue for Nintendo, after SNES.

They've managed to almost always turn a tidy profit though.

360ICE3474d ago

I think Wii U would have killed for Red Steel 2, Boom Blox or Madworld. Wii started out pretty well third-party-wise, but seeing how no one bought the more mature titles, the console's third party line-up was eventually reduced to Just Dance and Zumba-games.

wow so much bullshit i dont know where to start. First the xbone updates bring new features to the console and enhance the experience. Also the ps4 updates that came out brought some new features and improvements but no one can say that the xbox updates are worse or lacking. Second pc gaming was never dead idiot! The wii had 3rd parties but good god most of them were awfull. no console need software crap like that.

People who say PC gaming is dead, are just dumb fools who never played on a PC or tried it and were literally too dumb to actually use the PC. Yeah, you can say you like couch gaming more, this is a totally subjective thing and I wont deny that, if that is what you prefer, but on this board circle so many lies... and I dont even know where to start... and what for? For the egos of each and everyone of us, so noone feels like an idiot for buying the wrong device to game on. Oh, CoD on your console is only 900p, on mine its 1080p, it is unplayable and a totally different game, because of this... so stupid.

Last Gen Nintendo was mainly about the casuals and had the best sales.
Microsoft and Sony dominated in terms of games tho, a gamers heaven.

This Gen Nintendo is mainly about hard-core gamers, so has lost casual support to Sony, meaning low sales but has the best quality games.
Sony and Microsoft lead in terms of sales and spec but their games ain't up to par as the weaker console Wii U at the moment.

The console that has the best quality games will always sell the least unfortunately. Casuals outnumber the Hardcore.

@Kurruptor I agree Wii U hasn't got the best 3rd party support, next to non existent at the moment, But Nintendo has a variety of top exclusives with excellent gameplay and replay value aswell as a large amount of talented Indies.
it would be nice to have that 3rd party support but Nintendo overcompensates the lack of 3rd party with the quality of games they bring out, which are rarely matched by any 3rd party developer.

kurruptor3475d ago

Wii U is for hardcore gamers? Not sure how you can say that. Lack of third party means you're missing out on a lot.

Amuro3475d ago (Edited 3475d ago )

Wii U is indeed for the core. That's why they went back to more traditional controller and are publishing games like Bayonetta and Devil's Third.

But Nintendo gonna Nintendo and released an expensive but under-powered console which 3rd party's can't support without having to gimping the games.

kurruptor3475d ago

For "core" Nintendo fans, yes. Not for hardcore gamers.

Went back to traditional controller? The system doesn't even come with a controller, just a game pad. Surely anything but traditional.

The remotes you buy separately are the exact same as their last gen.

A couple exclusives games otherwise doesn't prove anything about hardcore.

eightiesbaby3475d ago

Wow, How uneducated are you.
Wii U is not for "core" Nintendo fans it's for "core" gamers unlike yourself.

Do your research, the Wii U does come with a "traditional" controller and its nothing like the Wii controller.

And there's a lot more than a couple of exclusive games with excellent gameplay and replay value which are among the highest rated out, along with Indie games and some 3rd Party games.

U need to go back to playing just dance, there's nothin "core" about u. Fanboys lol

lefty3475d ago

What is a hard core gamer?

kurruptor3475d ago

@Eighties

I have a damn Wii U. It does not come with what most would consider a normal controller. It only comes with a game pad controller, which is far from normal as it gets for a console.

If the majority of their major titles are their first party games, how is that not for their core gamers?

If you want to play Nintendo first party games, you get one. If you don't want that, you get a PS4 or Xbone.

DarXyde3475d ago (Edited 3475d ago )

How does that make the games any less "hardcore"? What exactly are "hardcore gamers"? Last I checked, Nintendo games require A LOT more time to get through and clear every challenge and such. Games that would otherwise be done in not so much time are often huge time sinks with side quests, challenges, etc. Let's put it this way, if Nintendo had a trophy/achievement system, you'd be hard pressed to find many people who completely clear their games. Smash alone has an unreal amount of things to collect, and that's a fighting game which, as a genre, is expected to be very limited in terms of content.

For the record, Nintendo's games follow a certain pattern: not so difficult to get to the end, but mastering many of the titles can be brutal. Mario 3D World's Champion's Road and Mario Kart 8 are testaments of this.

clouds53475d ago (Edited 3475d ago )

I consider myself a core gamer I'm doing it since 20 years. I have a wii u and I had a wii because they are different. They offer a new experience.
People here always cry about how lame it is to get the same game every year. Cod, AC, Fifa, Gta etc. Half the industry stopped making new games a long time ago. And people cry about it every day!
Nintendo on the other hand does something fresh every gen. They offer new gameplay mechanics and fresh game design but ultimately people go out and buy the console that had the same controller since 20 years and play games that use the same mechanics since 20 years and then whine why they didn't get anything new. I just got far cry 4 and it's a great game. But there is nothing in it that I haven't seen or done before...
I love my wii u and it's the perfect system to have next to your pc. But it's logic to me why it won't sell as much as other systems. Even though they cry different all that people want is the same good thing over and over and there is nothing wrong with it! But when you try something new you usually get punished for it in this industry.

I don't think you know what hard core and casual mean, nor do I think you know whewhere Nintendo is making its money.

DualWielding3475d ago

Nintendo loss the casuals to tablets and phones, not Sony

3475d ago
s45gr323475d ago

Not so sure about hardcore or that it has the best games. For me personally, the mobile market has pretty much took the entire casual audience away from consoles. The PC as a gaming platform with a lot easier to use, unique games like "only if", "among the sleep", "the banner saga", "consortium" ,etc. With strong third party support, free online gaming, console games like enemy mind, freedom planet, super panda adventure, etc. Meaning its taking console gamers away from consoles to PC. While, Smash Brothers, Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, and company are fun games they are still offering the same gaming experience that we gamers has experienced before at a high price. I agree on Sony and Microsoft statements at the moment but next year, well Sony might take off especially with No Man's Sky even though it will be on PC yess. It will offer a game that its console rivals won't be able to offer and if Sony brings out PlayStation Now a la Netflix then gaming will change forever. Movies cost around $300.00+- million dollars and tv shows are also very costly. ...... Just so no one brings up games are expensive crap.

lefty3475d ago

You clearly don't play the games you just called, each installment of those Nintendo games you called offer something new. Perhaps you should try them before going on hear say

The Playstation is battering the copetition.

Xbox is behind but has the most exclusive aaa titles out of the two.

Wii U has the same sales Smash Bros :)

KiwiViper853475d ago

Stop hiding behind listwar.com

If you have to show proof that PS4 has more exclusives, then does it really count?

Popular perception is that Xbox One has more AAA exclusives of a higher quality.

But wait till 2015, right?

Jaqen_Hghar3475d ago (Edited 3475d ago )

@KiwiViper85 obviously perception is not that. Xbots continue to push it as if it will somehow override the FACT that twice as many people have chosen PS4. A few of them probably did it for other reasons but the overriding driver behind evenly priced console sales is exclusive games. A man is "hiding" behind the fact that there are more and better exclusives already out and coming out for PS4.

Halo2ODST23475d ago

As an xbox user myself/fanboy even i can say ps4 is currently beating x1, but xbox has way better exclusives, not so much halo anymored due to the incompetence of 343 releasing yet another mess, the broken mcc, & nearly as a bad as halo (cod) 444444

Harold_Finch3475d ago

There isn't any point, i say MS win this year

Microsoft released a broken Halo game.
Microsoft released Sunset Overdrive, their token shooter.

Sony released a broken Driveclub game, Sony lost the Order and had nothing to fall back on shooter wise. (It's the reason why we get Injustic and Infamous: First Light on plus next month)

CorndogBurglar3475d ago

I can't believe this didn't mention the Red Ring for Xbox last gen. I had 4 Xboxes last gen due to that. My first 360 died a month after launch. Then it happened 2 more times throughout the entire gen. It was a big reason i decided to go PS this gen. That and the other obvious things from around launch time.

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2's Scope Was Impacted by Xbox Series S Limitations

Wccf tech writes: "Kingdom Come Deliverance 2's scope was impacted by the Xbox Series S hardware limitations, as developers could only make a game that was 25% bigger than its predecessor."

This is the issue with things like this

Xbox Series X is apparently to MS the worlds most powerful console

However the Series S is obviously a limitation because it’s underpowered and developers have to go for parity.

So what’s the point of the world’s most powerful console if you are holding third party developers back? They aren’t going to push themselves if they have to think about the weakest console.

The issue wouldn’t be as bad if it was just Xbox but you are also affecting the PS version aswell

I think developers need to start just taking advantage of a console and if one of them can’t do X Y and Z then f*** them…why should the others suffer. What’s MS going to do? The bigger the franchise the least chance MS are going to tell them to f*** off. Baulders Gate 3 seemed to have stood their ground and suddenly their “strict” parity rule didn’t really matter. We suddenly got super optimisation efforts for the Series S that got things sorted.

anast6h ago

I agree, and the sad part is use normal folk saw it the second they announced their plans.

Abear212h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Agree 100% this is why I didn’t want the M$ Monopoly, now PS5 version will be held back too.

If PS5 Pro comes out and Series S is still a thing it’ll be interesting what differences and what devs choose to do. Really hoping Rockstar pushes the PS5 pro with GTA6 and we get the best version possible.

outsider162434m ago

Good ole S indeed. Everyone knew this all along. S was holding games back...Now where the hell is Orchard i want a word with him.

LucasRuinedChildhood10h ago

More info from the author of the article, I think: https://www.reddit.com/r/ki...

Quote:
"1) I was told this info from the producer of the game Martin Klíma.
2) He specifically said the game will have only one mode.
3) And this mode is 4K 30 on PS5/XSX and 1440p 30 on XSS.
4) He said that the game is already running north of the 30 FPS cap so the performance should be stable on launch, much better than KCD1.
5) The limitation was XSS because of the 10GB memory. He said that's why they wanted to make the game 25% larger.
6) Speculation on my part: the output resolution is probably upscaled and the reason why there won't be a 60 FPS mode is because it'll most likely be very CPU heavy, like Dragon's Dogma 2 for example."

Doesn't seem like they're adding a 40fps mode on PS5/Series X for launch even if they can handle it.

Sgt_Slaughter6h ago

I'd much rather have 1440p/60fps or even 45fps. Having just one, even with the Series S in mind, is disappointing.

franwex5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Remember when xbots were adamant that the series s won’t hold back the gen?

Microsoft just needs to let go of the mandatory parity. Who cares if your grandma doesn’t understand that a game cannot be played on the S. It’s not like it she can buy you a physical game for it anyway. Before buying the game put up a notice that it only works on series X. If you’re buying for a friend-allow for a refund.

Bam. Everyone is happy. Most series s owners are for casuals that want Game Pass anyway and most likely don’t purchase most games.

If the developers want it to run on S, let them figure it out.

Jin_Sakai5h ago

“During the event, the Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 producer also revealed that on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game will run at 4K resolution and 30 frames per second“

Another “creative decision” right? 🤦‍♂️

IHateNate4h ago

Amateur hour. Very incapable developer.

Outside_ofthe_Box4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Since you're not an amateur and clearly know more than them, can you over there and help get the game running on the S without having to sacrifice their true vision. Us gamers would really appreciate you using your wisdom for good 🙏

IHateNate4h ago

Thousands of games run just fine on S.

But Kingdom Come is the game that can’t. Must be one hell of a game!

franwex2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

Thousands of games run on PS4 and on Switch. If developers want them to run on those systems. Fine. Those two platforms still get new games. Sony isn’t making studios also make a ps4 pro version, or Nintendo a wiiu version. Microsoft technically is.

IHateNate1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

If games like Alan Wake 2, GTA6, COD, hellblade all run on S, no excuse for this 100x smaller and 100x worse looking game to be held back.

outsider162429m ago(Edited 29m ago)

"Thousands of games run just fine on S.

But Kingdom Come is the game that can’t. Must be one hell of a game!"

Kingdom come 2 runs just fine alright. Its the SCOPE that they want. They had to cut it because of the stupid S series. Hellblade2 ran just fine too..but im pretty confident if it was just the X in mind, the scope of the game would have been much bigger.

IHateNate5m ago

So their scope is greater than that of GTA6 and warzone? Wow. Crazy
