GTA IV smashes day one sales record

Data obtained by MCV from official UK industry monitor ChartTrack shows that Rockstar's GTA IV has become the fastest selling game ever in a 24 hour period.

The figures – based on EPoS sales data and estimated retail transactions – show that total online and High Street sales for the game hit 609,000 in one day.

In addition, Xbox 360 narrowly nudged out PS3 in the 'battle of the consoles'.

335,000 copies were sold on Microsoft's machine whilst 274,000 copies were sold for PS3 yesterday.

I don't know how you figured that...but if there are 1M PS3's in UK and they sold 274K copies of GTA IV on day 1 that means that 27% of all PS3 owners bought the game day 1, as opposed to if there are 2M 360's in the UK and they sold 335K copies that means only 16% of 360 owners bought the game on day 1 meaning more PS3 owners got the game on day 1 than 360 owners.

I stay in the UK but there is one big problem.Six of my friends pre ordered the game.2 on PS3 4 on 360.

None of us that pre ordered for the 360 version are getting it till the 6th of may at the earliest but the PS3 guys have gotten their copies.

Everyone buys a GTA game, thats why it's the biggest game in history. But... PS3 is mostly bought for Blu-Ray movies, thats why your attach rate is lower than the Wii, a game system that has outsold the 360 and PS3. PS3 owners have 3 games on average but have about 15 movies, so that would be like every one game a PS3 owner buys, they buy 4.5 movies. Since the PS3 movie attach rate is higher than it's game attacht rate shows that most owners use if for movies. This one game as an acception to the rule, because it's so big, but this one game doesn't change the fact that the PS3 has the lowest attach rate in games. When you compare that to how well the console is selling, then add the never increasing attach rate in games, just shows it's a DVD player more than a game console.

This is just UK numbers. The install base for the 360 is bigger and it did have a price cut last month. The 360 has been outselling the PS3 in the UK due to the price cut. EU, overall, the PS3 has been outselling the PS3 weekly, so I do believe the PS3 version will outsell the 360 version by a small margin.

I disagree with you Jess. I think the Wii has found so much success because Nintendo has really tapped into something. As a hardcore gamer I don't nearly give my Wii as much love as I should, but it appeals to a much broader base than the 360 or PS3. My wife's friends have done some drunken Wii playing after a girls night out. These are girls that have never touched video games. One just couldn't believe how much fun it was. This kind of reaction is typical of the people that I have gotten to try the Wii. But this is just what I have seen in my home.

As far as the Wii being a fad I think you can't really classify it as a fad. The Wii has been the hot item for two holiday seasons now. Fads really don't have that kind of staying power. People buy the Wii because it's fun. When they play it they have fun. According to hardcore gamers it's a toy, but video games are supposed to be fun. The Wii is. When one talks about software sales, the only thing that really matters is how much software is actually sold. If the 360 sells more copies of GTAIV than PS3, then that means the MS is making more money off of GTAIV than Sony. Ariexv is right about something...halo 1 or 2 would not have sold 40 million on the ps2. Halo1/2 wouldn't be able to compete with all of the quality games already on the system. The xbox had absolutely nothing going for it until halo. Halo was a mediocre title on a system with a less than mediocre library. Meanwhile the PS2 boasts 1,000s of games that reach pretty much every audience. No game on the ps2 will ever have a high attach like GTA4, just because the systems are found everywhere. Some people have more than 2 in their homes, and a lot of people have more than 1. Some place ps2s in cars, vacation homes, hotels, etc.. However, getting back to the point, the PS3/360 attach rates are very important to developers. While right now of course its about the number of units sold, its also about how many will be expected to sell 1-2 years from now. After all, high quality games take much longer to be released than before. Expect much more PS3 exclusives due to these "meaningless" attach rate articles.

The thing is that, at least here in Sweden, stores received way more copies of the 360 than the ps3 version.

I visited 12 stores yesterday (on release day) in my city. None of them had any PS3-games left, and about half of them still had some x360 copies. The distributor has ran out of PS3 versions, and stores are waiting to get the next shipment. So now I'll have to wait until next week to get my GTA4, while 360-owners can still go out and find the game easily.

It seems that xbox has sharper graphics but the trade off is ps3 has less texture popins and it is smoother. All I could say if your playing with a large environment game like gta , I would like less pop ins.

For instance if you in a helicopter you can see the water textures from a further distance than the xbox counter part.

The only advantage I see from the xbox version is sharper graphics thats about it (and oh yah gta is more of a single player game than anything else)

Nope. Why should anyone be. Greater install base will usually equate to greater sales. Just simple math. No real biggy as the consumers are getting basically the same game at launch so good job on R part in making a good game. Just came back from buying my copy. Tried the single player and the multiplayer. It's pretty good and my ps3 has no issues with it. Planning to get the 360 version later down in the month when my xbox gets back. What does it mean to Sony and MS?

Well, in bottom line terms it's always better to sell more. So from per copy license point of view Microsoft made more money (assuming license fees are similar between platforms).

However when you look at install base sales, the PS3 actually did better. If we take the install bases as roughly 1.2million PS3's, and 2.3 Xbox 360's then the figures work out as about 23% of total PS3 owners in the UK bought on launch day; whereas the figure for the 360 is 15%

Considering the massive advertising campaign MS put behind GTAIV in the UK (and the total lack of campaign from Sony), I would guess Sony are pretty happy with that figure! It will be interesting to see the comparative longer term sales figures, and any spikes in hardware sales.

Given the install base of the machines - the 360 version should have had 66% of the market if the same proportion of machine owners bought it. (Assuming its about 2 to 1 install base)
The figures would suggest that higher proportion of PS3 owners have bought this game so far - but I'm willing to bet that shortages of stock and so forth will affect this number, so the real figures are subject to change. What it would suggest though, is that the heavy marketting campaign and the 50 mill DLC have not really grabbed the punters as much as many predicted it would...

Interesting, but it will be more obvious what the sales trends tell us when the figures are fuller and better confrimed.

I made a comment earlier about stores receiving less copies of the PS3 version, which sold out very quickly. (By lunchtime on release day I couldn't find one copy of the PS3 version anywhere in my city).

There are over 2,000,000 Xbox360's in the UK, while only 1.2million PS3s. The UK is the Xbox's ONLY strong market in all of the Europe, yet they could only outsell the PS3 by 60k?

For you morons celebrating that as a victory, LOL. That means that the 360 will be outsold 2-1 in software ATLEAST in Europe and be outsold in every region in hardware.

Microsoft failed horrifically if the UK is a sign of things to come. The PS3 will sell more hardware by far and also be very close in software. That means by August the PS3 will have a larger install base everywhere in the world except the US and will over take the 360's total install base by next summer.

Bigger install base + hardware capabilities that can't run on the 360 = more exclusives for the PS3. GTAIV is the beginning of the end for the 360

Anyway to get back on track, these numbers are GREAT for Rockstar but the hardware sells are what MS and Sony will be even more concerned about. Given the number of GTA4 units sold on both systems, relative to the previous hardware numbers for the 360 and PS3, the PS3 is probably going to end up doing a little bit better overall (hardwarewise) during the summer with respect to 360 sales. With a bigger install base for 360 you could say there are fewer people buying the systems where it's the opposite for PS3.

I know at my local Gamestop they are out of non-reserved PS3s but they are overflowing with 360s. Means nothing other then there is more demand for the PS3 or the supply sucks at this one Gamestop. Either way I know that the PS3s are sold immediately after they get into this Gamestop.

My personal feeling is that the fall will be MUCH better for the 360 relative to current hardware sales but the PS3 will continue on a steady trend upwards, so it won't be far behind. Given all the great titles scheduled to drop in the last quarter of the year for both systems we all need to be working full time and put in a couple of overtime days to affords the onslaught of gaming goodness that is coming. This year to me marks one of the true climaxes of the system wars. Sony and MS are doing it big in 2008!

Hard to say if the example you give is indicative of the whole of the UK. Earlier in this thread it was mentioned the PS3 version was out of stock, but 360 version was on shelves.

In general I'd say that logistics and stock forecasting would dictate that more copies should have been pressed for the 360 because of the larger install base. With the PS3 posting numbers so close to the 360's sale figures I'd be more inclined to think the PS3 would have shortages.

VF5 was a launch game, well here in Europe it was, the higher AA wasn't noticible, but BACK THEN the PS3 couldn't do HDR+AA, but that's about to change in the future, with OpenGL updates solving that.

360 gave up rivaling the PS3 when the 360 lost its HD DVD drive addon and lost it's only higher then DVD disc capacity option, they had a second chance to accept Blu-ray but still did not, This is why PS3 gets GTA 5 due to disc capacity. You can argue sales all you like but DVD capacity is in the past, You can't seriously expect devs to be creating games on DVD in several years time unless many DVD's to substitute a Blu-ray disc. Not even Downloading movies or games is a 100% solution option to xbox as many buyers bought a console that did not even include a HDD. Looks like the only way you will see GTA 5 atall on xbox atall is a new Xbox 3, or a Blu-ray addon. Good luck with that xbox fans.

NA will be in favor of the x360.If the PS3 version manages to sell 50% of x360 GTA4 version in NA then that would still be good for Sony as currently there are over 2 times more x360 in NA compare to the PS3.

Accept the facts. Bottom line GTA4 on the 360 out sold the ps3. Looks like GTA4 is more at home on the 360. Can you blame people for not wanting to play the ps3 GTA4 in 630p standard def, when they could play at 720p in HD on the 360.

I've got the same set-up; 3 360's, 1 PS3, and 1 Wii. Some games are fun when everyone is all together. I got 3 copies of GTA and I can't wait for some Free Mode online this weekend while grillin, chillin, and drinking some beers with friends.

For the last f#%king time, the US, Japan, and UK are the only countries with accurate sales numbers. The EU numbers are based largely on speculation. France and Spain don't release official sales numbers, as well as a lot of other countries. Look it up. Quit basing your assumptions on VGFARTZ and other sites which only estimate sales numbers.

To all the people saying this is not a win for MS because MS has a larger install base: YES IT IS A WIN FOR MS! The install base does not matter when it comes to profit.

Say for example, I'm selling mangoes, and my friend is selling mangoes. If I have 30 customers and I sell 30 mangoes at a dollar each, and my friend only has 20 customers but he sells 25 mangoes, IT DOESNT MATTER HOW MANY CUSTOMERS WE HAVE. I still made 5 dollars more than he did, PERIOD.

These Systems are Running GTA IV!!! There should be a truce Installed until the next Big Game comes out!!!

Its a fact that ps3 is a much more powerful machine but that doesnt mean XBOX 360 cant make some killer dvd games. Right Now its all about preference. Which is fine to each is own. But, GTA IV can run on both systems! Who cares about the console wars right now?!?

XbOX Has Been Owning Next gen Until Ps3 finnally got the ball rolling after the blu-ray victory. Its really a matter of time just for ps3 to catch up to Xbox live but until then... GTA IV can run on both systems! Im playing gta on ps3 & im on 1080i, looks fantastic!!! Consider me impressed with Both these powerhouse consoles.
