If you don't pay for Xbox Live gold membership it automatically goes to SILVER meaning you do NOT lose anything only the ability to play online. If your card details expire that means Microsoft cannot take them money for you to go to a GOLD account.

You're account ONLY gets cancelled completely if you tell Microsoft you want the account closed.

As long as your Silver account is active, it doesn't get cancelled. You do not need to pay a nickel for a Silver account and you can still use it to download new content from Marketplace. The author of this "story" claims to have used his account to send messages to his friends which means it was still active. All he needed to do was to buy a subscription card with cash at his local gamestore to reactivate his Silver account and make it Gold again.

It wasn't the gamerscore really, essentially yes it was slightly annoying to go from 10K, however starting the games I've played all over again is the worst part. I guess I get some re-playability value however!

With regards to the downgrade to Silver, this is what I requested Microsoft to do, however they said as it has been nearly 12 months since the account was last 'used', although the login both on the dashboard of which would then throw me off and the fact I can access my data on Xbox.com to me signifies the account is still active, but apparently not.

I couldn't purchase another subscription, I updated the card details and wasn't able to do anything, under the billing on Microsoft Services it says 'Cancelled' next to my subscription and also previous content downloads when I was using the Xbox.

You can keep it forever as a Silver account as long as it is seen on the network on a regular basis. If you are unplugged from the network for a long time on a silver account, it will eventually cancel and the tag gets recycled. To prevent this, all you had to do was sign into the account while the Xbox 360 was online periodically. There is no way for the system to know you want to keep the account if you are never seen again.

You dont even need a console for a LIVE Account. You can keep a silver account for free without ever having bought a Console yourself.

Just goto live.com and sign up for one, and log into it on occassion to keep it from getting recycled.

Can we transfer game saves on memory card or the way we do when we swap the HDD I mean your gamertag will not be able you to take you online but you can get the save then which will be transfered to your new account.
So you might get your save if not the gamerscore.
Also there is a technique in which you can directly connect your 360 to PC and transfer any data as you wish but your 360 warranty will be voided since you have to open it and its a hack developed by moders and not MS.

My account got suspended once because the debit card was out of money. It didn't revert to silver, it became suspended. I couldn't update my information from the dashboard so I looked around the Xbox forums and found the link to the site where you can change your card info. It was really annoying and I don't see why they can't allow you to change it from the dashboard.

Lets now take a look at the community, because thats what online is really all about. With Xbox Live, talking to your friends, cross-game inviting them, voice chatting them, video chatting them, and instant messaging them is all at the click of a button (the (X) button).

As much as you may want to down-play this functionality, it us HUGE and become something you can't do without once you are use to it. Needed to exit to get at freinds and visa versa SUCKS in reagards to function.

Notice the article also adds a few comments about lag which I have NEVER experienced. Also, many 360 games are allowing larger player numbers with each new game (COD 4 as one example).The article also make mention of many items that the PSN will offer in the "FUTURE" but not currently. Also keep in mind with XBL it is much more friends to pay with folks from ALL OVER THE WORLD, rather than preference to close geographical areas. The fact I could not get a into a Motorstorm online game for a good 3 nights trying, I was not to happy about that. Lucky, that is now sorted but still not as nice and experience I have had on XBL with ther racers.

As I said orignally, I can only judge by what is availabe and functional TODAY (not waiting beyond). As I also said, once HOME comes along, perhaps I will change my mind. But till then I stick to my guns and say ...

I'm not getting bent out of shape, i just asked you a simple question which I already knew the answer to.
As far as downplaying the features, PSN also does voice chat, video chat with games that support it and text chat. It's just not cross game. I play on live as well as on PSN, and i don't really need a website to tell me what features i actually use when playing my games.

I just find out rather ignorant when people spew out false information about how X service is SO MUCH better than Z. the reality is Live offers a few extra features which make it easier to communicate between gamers, that doesn't not make it WAY better.

By the way, I can easily do without it because it was never that important to me to begin with. I want people to leave me alone when i'm playing my games, if i really want to talk about random stuff with one of my friends, i'll use the phone to call them or text them, i don't need my video game service to do that for me.

If the differences I see as MUST HAVES are not important to you, than this is a mute point for you. But for me, the cost of XBL per year (cost is what started this item) it a small price to pay for the extra items "I" must have from my online service. The "Few Extra Features" you are talking about to many are pretty important extras. Not small take or leaves for most of use who have/do used them a good bit.

With better functionality and reliability, Microsoft's service just keeps popping up with more and more problems, problems that technically shouldn't even exist. Paying $50 annually for the service as a whole is still a lot, but makes a little more sense. But paying that much strictly for online play while everything else is free, well...just seems idiotic.

And Sheng Long's got it right. Xbox Live has a few nifty features that PSN doesn't have, but that definitely doesn't make it a better service. The two or three weeks of crashing that Xbox Live suffered from during the holiday season boosted PSN subscriptions, and gamers (for the most part) have very little brand loyalty. My bro only ever played Call of Duty on Xbox Live, but once he tried it on my PS3 and got the same experience the question popped up "Why am I paying for Live again?"

PSN is not free you pay for it when you have to buy extra long cables to charge your controllers or a chargestation or when you have to buy a cable to hook it up to your HDtv or for people that pay 40 bucks for a demo of a racing game. Some of that goes towards PSN i am sure.

the things that make online gaming less fun are the things that you didnt mention. The things that are better on xbl than psn are the ability to report twats even if the process is flawed its still there and ingame invites all games. The things that I feel are better on psn are the dedicated servers on 1st party games (Ive seen lag on xbl and psn on gears and halo) But sony's 1st party games have dedicated servers and you'll know what im talking about if you've ever played warhark, resistance or even gt5p amongst overs. So ill agree that there are more plusses on the xbl camp to psn but there are some things that are better on psn than xbl. Forget msn as messaging will do and I can use my normal pc keyboard if I wanna type and psn has voice and conference calls and im sure xbl doesn't have video conference calls. Plus its free. BUT, getting game invites without leaving games is a feature I would pay for on its own.

I could also just pick up the phone and call some of my XBL friends, but the long distance charge from Canada to the UK is a bit expensive. I enjoy a chat while I play COD4 and my chum in the UK plays something else.

I hate being in the middle of UT3, get a message from a friend, exit the game to see what the message is, only to find out my bud want to see if I want to play UT3. It pains me that I have to exit out a game just to read a message. With the power of the PS3, this functionality should be incorporated.

And to give a quick blurb outside of online play and why I prefer XBL, I really do much rather marketplace in comparison to the almost WebPage style interface of the PSN store. Also, downloading content from PSN for some reason is much slower than on my 360 yet both are set-up the same on my router in regards to restriction (or lack there of). And last, when I download a Demo or update from XBL, it not only downloads quick, but once download is complete .. BAM .. it is ready to use. On PSN I hate the two step of (1)Download and then (2) install. Just not very well thought out in my eyes. And for those reading and do not know ... the services I have descriped (all with the exception of actuall ONLINE PLAY) as in downloading demos, movies, XBLA games, etc, etc ... that is all available to not only Gold members, but also Silver ......... and Silver is "FREE"

As I said, I do note HATE PSN by any means, but I for sure prefer XBL and have no issue paying the small price of $50 for 13 months. I spend more on Coffee in a week than I do on XBL for the month. "MAYBE" home will change my mind, but for now XBL is my poison of choice for online play and function of my consoles.

Everything you do on your live account is linked through MS. If your account gets deleted, hacked, ban or what not everything go's with it. Why should people need to deal with this if they don't want to?

If my account is deleted the prograss of a local game shouldn't be linked to system that blocks me from accessing it. If something screws up like my console is ban by a glitch, breaks down or whatever MS should try to resolve these problems.

It's already known that DRM issues are being fixed. This is relatively the same thing and involves DRM. The DRM is in place prevent people from cheating on gamer scores. These scores should be optional. If I want to play casually fine but, when it causes DRM I don't want it. So what if their stored on your system. If your games are stored locally some have DRM restricting them to your LIVE account.

As a company MS should do everything in their power to fix things otherwise intelligent people will move to other consoles. It's just good business sense to help a fan out.

Seriously, if you want to help MS you should defend the customers here because MS is being unreasonable. Even if it's his fault as a customer his request isn't unreasonable. Customers shouldn't be given a run around over a tiny infractions especially, if their willing to negotiate a resolution that's within reason.

No but the way I paid for Xbox Live down the years since 2002 was via Credit Card, the only method at the time. You can purchase a subscription in a store here in the UK or use Mastercard/Visa/American Express online.

The account AUTOMATICALLY reverts to SILVER when you do not use gold. I also have NEVER used my credit card to purchase it or renew it. I take the 10 minutes and buy a 12+1 Month (so 13 months) membership for $50 and have NEVER had a problem.

I do however have MANY friends that do AUTOMATIC renewal and some have since given up GOLD for a bit and as stated, and AUTOMATIC downgrade to Silver happens, but the Gamer-tag, acheivement points, etc stay in-tack with no change.

If this story is TRUE ... call MS and go direct to the Tier 3 folks. They are AMERICAN and WILL help. I have used them before and have been VERY VERY HAPPY !! I would say the TIER 1 guy you spoke with is FULL OF IT.

I have dealt with the broken english many times. I found out the best way to deal with this is to ask to be transferred to someone in the states. I would call alot, cause it could be a simple case of lost in translation. Also why is it that the people from India who work for MS, have names like Bob and George.

Is this your story. If it is I suggest you try a prepaid card. You can get 3 month and even 1 month card(I think) for cheap. Microsoft probaly doesnt want you to use the credit card to pay. If you can log into the account with a silver membership then I think you can just enter the prepaid code and it should give you your gold account back. As long as you can sign in to SILVER LIVE with the original gamertag then I think this should work.

With big innovations like online gaming, in game messaging, communication, video chat and achievements, the Live! service has a lot to live up to. I can delete my account off of the HDD/Memory Card and still be okay with it, since MS keeps a backup of your account on their servers. Though, my save games aren't covered. With 360, you can create saves on either the HDD or the memery card. I don't think PS3 has a proprietary memory card slot anymore, so you guys have on less option.

I remember when I lost my original PS memory card and freaked out over it, since it had my 99+ hour almost FULLY mastered FF7 game save (clock stopped at 99:99, but I'm sure there was like 200hrs). But after a week of solid searching it never turned up. So I bit the bullet and let it go. That was gaming accumulated from 97 thru 98, and It was my first time going thru FF7, so it meant a lot to me. But then I got back to reality and tried to learn not to put so much passion and priority on such things.

It's funny though...three years of "slavish devotion" to ANY console or game is wasted time in my book. Maybe it wouldn't seem so important if you people got out more.

Your right the PS3 Doesn't have a proprietary memory card slot. It has UNIVERSAL memory card slots (USB ports, SD slot, CP slot, MPro slot).

you're right, but you can't create saves on them. it wouldn't be...technically advisable. you see, those cards are usually formatted FAT or FAT32 so that they REMAIN readable almost 100 universally. once reformatted, you could lose compatibility with whatever devices you may want to use them in later.

oh, sure you could re-reformat. but then you lose the data on it, requiring you to create an intermediary storage, which will just end up with you deciding to keep ALL your saves back on HDD. which can fail and then you have NO backup.

As soon as they introduced achievements those days were gone for good. People want to complete games to get points rather than completing them for the sake of winning a game.

I have a whole library of PS2 games that I bought and completed because I actually wanted to win them to see what happened not because I wanted any credit for doing so. MS and XBL have pretty much ruined all that by encouraging people to win games for the achievements, making people less grateful for the work the devs put into the game in the first place and being more interested in how many points they can squeeze out of it.

Now Home is going to have trophies and people say it's to compete with XBL, but Home was already going to be better than XBL without any form of 'achievements'. These points have in some sense ruined the essence of gaming, sadly.

I had an account on Xbox Live on the original xbox for about 3 years and I didn't use the account for 1 year before the x360 came out. So when I finally got my x360, my account was cancelled.
Now the funny thing about Microsoft and this cancelling thing is that it is downright STUPID to even conceive annoying people with cancelling permanently their accounts (The name you had your account named as can NEVER be used again btw, so if you really like a name and can't use it, it doesn't really mean that someone is, it just might be that someone already had in the past).

Heck even MMORPG's don't cancel accounts mostly, they just suspend em and you can mostly come back even 2-3 years later and activate it. You see, there is no use whatsoever to anyone to "cancel" permanently an account. WHATSOEVER. NO EXCUSE. It's just MS being STUPID business wise by irritating consumers.

And it IS a big turn off for anyone who already had an account. You lose not just your Gamertag, you lose all your friendlist too which is what I hated the most, I did meet a lot of good players back in the day I will never be able to find again because the same thing either happpened to them and THEY had to changed their tags and I changed my tag. THIS IS JUST RIDICULOUS MICROSOFT.

The fact that it's free to use is a major plus in its favour too. The only thing you need a card for is paying for DLC. That's the way it should be imo. Everyone pays the ISP for their internet access, on top of that 360 owners pay MS for XBL?! Shouldn't have to pay extra just to play online, that's money grabbing at it's finest. The reason why he was told that his account was cancelled is because the 1st credit card used was no longer valid! Maybe the dumb xbox live call center dude didn't explain it in detail! I too had a similar problem with my account!! I had used my mom's credit card when live 1st started then when the card expired, Microsoft would not let me update my credit card info because they couldn't charge the old card. They said that I had to have the bank re-activate the card, then let them charge the card and then they would reverse the charge and then I could update the credit card info! They said that by me letting the account expire before I changed the credit card info, that my account was lost forever and to just make a new email and start a new account! So I asked to speak to a supervisor and after explaining to her what had happened, she switched my account over to prepaid and then I used a $50 prepaid xbox live and have since just used another one on Feb 19 2008! He should have asked for a supervisor and explained his case!
