GTA IV Exclusive Content Equal To San Andreas/Vice City

So it Looks like Microsoft has finally announced what it's Exclusive DLC deal w/ Rockstar really means, according to Microsoft each episode of DLC content will be equal to the games San Andreas and Vice City for Ps2/Xbox. They have also stated that Digital Downloads will be the new way to deliver the GTA "Expansions."

So it looks like with this new announcement if you were planning on playing the Vice City/San Andreas versions of GTA IV the 360 is the Definitive version to get, with the first expansion arriving as early as Fall this year and the next one to follow-up in 2009.

* It will be bigger than a lot of people think. GTA3 Vice City and San Andreas were basically expansions of GTA3. Think of the DLC that way. We are talking major expansion for GTAIV

Notice they didn't say you get it for free. You pay for GTA4, and you get San Andreas/Vice City, not for free, but cheaper than SA/VC.

GTAIV will be great on both consoles but I doubt that the exclusive content will really be enough to encourage people to buy 360s suddenly.

Um...

Vice City is a good example of something that could've been DLC for GTA3. San Andreas? Not so much. That game was epic on scale. More like an Oblivion with Gangsters.

GTA4 isn't as big as San Andreas (though it may have more missions), so I highly doubt the DLC will be. Vice City sounds more reasonable to me. It'll be interesting to see if they add new areas with the 360 DLC or just new missions. The long wait between episodes sounds like more than just mission building, but who knows?

Either way, it's still a solid reason to get the 360 version over the PS3 version, but not necessarily to buy a 360 if you already have a PS3.

I wonderi if it's new areas as well or if the size of San Andreas (Which as you say is epic in scale. Love the Oblivion with Gangsters comment) is the size of the story again but set in the same location... If you get what I mean. It does sound extremely good.

I only have a PS3 (may well be getting a 360 for NG2 by the looks of it) but the DLC doesn't bether me that much. Although I rushed for 100% I found San Andreas too big and was glad to get it over with by the end and never played it as much as I did VC but as I say I may have had game overload from trying to reach 100% asap.

To anybody who really LOVES GTA (and I know there's a lot of you) If the bitbag is right and you have the choice of consoles, looks like the 360 may well be the version to get.

Supports the 360 when they decide to release GTA5 then it has a chance of being exclusive. But, in 3 more years i think Microsoft will have moved on to the 720 or whatever and Rockstar will not want to make it exclusive for a new console with no install base and it will be multi or exclusive to the PS3.

...unless GTA IV on the 360 outsells its PS3 counterpart 5:1. Even then I could still see a scenario where Rockstar would make GTA5 for the PS3 as well. Rockstar is extremely loyal to Sony, as it should be seeing what a devastating combo PlayStation and Rockstar have been in the past. And by the way, I don't think the 360 version is a lock to double or triple the sales of the PS3 version, even with the DLC. I think MS needs the DLC to push sales of their version, and if they are smart they would push the DLC in a major ad campaign for the 360 version of GTA IV, beginning this March... Sony is counting on awakening a sleeping giant of casual gamers/GTA fans into buying a PS3 because of this game....

You should notice the word "chapters". That means an add on to the story or in this case missions. The two exclusive parts that you will most likley have to pay 15-20 dollars for are missions but the extra downloadable content that isnt exclusive is guns cars etc etc.

There are going to be enough missions to satisfy any player so this extra content is just a microft tatic to make moneyjust like they do with everything else they got.

Unlike San Andreas/Vice City they can use the stuff already on the disc from GTA IV the game, if GTA IV fits on 8 gigs then the expansions using the GTA IV game for textures/sound/your character/huge part of the coding means the 2 expansions can be as big as Vice City/San Andras and only be 3-4 gigs easy.

I am going to have to side with Meus on this one. Although it is one hell of a perk for the 360 owners, I dont think that a massive amount of people considering buying a console would let downloadable content to a game sway them in either direction.

This "investment" is for going after those on the fence who don't have either system but are itching to "Jump In/Play B3yond," and for going after neutral gamers who haven't picked a side. Don't discount 360 fans either, who buy multiplatform games at a rate higher than anyone else; 360 fans will eat this up like candy. The prospect of more missions--- exclusive missions--- going into 2009 for GTA IV could sway many of those aforementioned gamers to the 360 version, especially if MS really promotes the DLC before the game streets. Big picture... if Sony wants to catch/surpass the 360 this year, it is going to have a make up a deficit in the millions. The DualShock3 controllers will be hitting the US/Europe very soon (I already have two white DualShock3's from Japan), with pretty much every game since firmware 1.92 releasing having rumble enabled (other than CoD4... Infinity Ward, where's the PS3 rumble love?)

As far as achievements, both Uncharted and DMC4 have accomplishments. I'm willing to bet $60 now that GTA4 has accomplishments and rumble on the PS3 when it releases.

And 7.5...Those "useless" controllers will STILL WORK, although without rumble. I'm willing to bet that retailers that allow trade-in's will get FLOODED with SixAxis controllers when the DualShock3's release outside of Japan. I know that I'm going to trade in my two SixAxis controllers for two US DualShock3's when they come out...

Exactly. This more than anything is the reason it won't be anywhere near close to even Vice City in size. Microsoft time and again has shown they are unwilling to commit their consumer base to a hdd requirement, much less a large hdd requirement.

If its 7-8 gigs thats a gigantic part of the standard 20gig hdd. Making 120gb hdd's incredible expensive for what they are doesn't help the situation any either.

You're forgetting it can use the stuff already in GTA IV, instead of having to have everything completly on it's own like Vice City/San andras, being DLC means the IV disk will still have to be in letting it use anything already in IV to lower how much space it takes up, IV is less then 8 gigs so the expansions using IVs textures/coding/etc will probly only be 2-4 gigs each.

M$ isn't shooting straight with it's consumers (imagine that!). First they said it was new missions (hence episodic content), then they said each episode will be approx 10 hours of gameplay. Hell there's an article in the october issue of Game Informer where the journalist was invited to rockstars studios to preview the game and he himself said that the 360 version was no where near launch quality. ...for me. Waiting for an official Microsoft announcement. Multiplatform games are going to be the biggest battleground for the next-gen systems in 2008, bigger I think than the "exclusives." The exclusive AAA titles will just space themselves out enough not to run into each other. As owners of both an Xbox 360 and the PS3, I will really be doing my research as to which game is better on which system. Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Saints Row 2, and of course GTA IV. Xbox has been killing PS3 on the multiplatform arena so far, not so much in game execution, but definitely in sales. Sony has to do a better job of distinguishing their versions of games. But MS paid a ton of $$$ to get the "exclusive DLC," and you have to expect it to be (1) BIG, and (2) never to appear on PS3. If MS splashes a big ad campaign highlighting the exclusive content as several expansions for GTA IV, watch out... and of course we're going to pay for it, so MS gets back their $50 mil....

I'm Pretty sure that if you have a ps3, you probably had/have a ps2. So if it's safe to assume that, then you can also assume, you have or played both San Andreas and Vice City. So if this the only content that is/was paid for to be exclusive. IMO, MS made a stupid deal. So with that said, If xbox doesn't have any other content I will be picking it up for the ps3(prefer controller over 360)

No real details at all, simply a suggestion that it will be more than a few extra missions. It's hard to make any real sense from this statement, and no one is going base a purchase decision on such a statement, so I hope they get the deatils out there soon.
Most of the purchasers of this game will not be the kind of people who ae plugged into gaming blog and news sites, so if MS really want to capatalise on the extra money they've thrown at this product they need to define what the content is and get the message out quick. Well I have pre-purchased my copy from Amazon.com for the PS3, but this makes me re-think to a degree on buying a Xbox 360. But anyway I bet the game itself will be massive meaning a lot of missions and stuff to do in the city.

Good point is how much the content will be, that is the key question because if the expansions are indeed that massive like Vice City or even San Andreas then I figure the add-on expansions may cost upwards to 40 bucks per add-on seriously, you have to factor hours of play into the price. Figure most people played San Andreas for more then 100 hours and figure Vice City for 30 to 40 hours. You add that on top of the already massive game that will be something.

The Next factor is what the expansions / Add-on are going to be, are they going to add to the storyline or pick from the storyline pending where the player is in the game. I am interested in seeing what the content will be like just addition side missions or alternate storylines to the actual game itself.

Eiter way I am psyched for this game to come out already.

I have a PS3, but I plan on getting a 360, and I'll be out of debt for my new TV... in late April, funnily enough.

Hopefully, by then there will be either a new SKU (Blu-Ray, Internal Wi-Fi, anyone?) out, or a price drop:
- To compete with Sony's (likely) price-drop
- To tempt people away from the PS3 GTA and also MGS4
- To try and counter Home

Obviously, by then they will hopefully have fixed the RRoD problem.

I highly doubt that the DLC for the 360 will be the size of Vice City or San Andreas, the files would be too large for most people with a 20 Gig drive. That would seriously limit the number of people that would purchase the expansion; Not only that but not everyone with a 360 has XBL again limiting the number of people who can purchase the games.

So it Looks like Microsoft has finally announced what it's Exclusive DLC deal w/ Rockstar really means, according to Microsoft each episode of DLC content will be equal to the games San Andreas and Vice City for Ps2/Xbox. They have also stated that Digital Downloads will be the new way to deliver the GTA "Expansions."

No where in that paragraph its says the size you morons, you think they'd build whole new cities for some DLC, that would be a whole new game, he meant quality, stop being tools and learn to read.

i think it comes down to this whole, whos buying which scenario,the trend is that ps2 owners and generally casual gamers go for the ps3 (very much so in europe) while hardcore gamers and more pc users go for the xbox360. that being the case, hardcore gamers are more likely/ willing to have live, and a large hdd so therefore i dont hink the dlc will have a bigger impact as those have said. Its aimed at getting those who own both consoles to buy it for the 360. it isn't enough to sway people on the fence buying a console, thats way too ambitious. there are many many other things to consider when buying a console than dlc for a multiplatform game. GTA is big, but you must see the fact that without the ps2's 120 mln sales it would never have been such a huge franchise.

there are way to many things to consider and i think speculation at this point is illfounded. the gtaIV "experiance" is on the 360 but i'm sure those paying however much for the game are getting exactly the same "experiance", simply those that want to pay more will get those extra chapters that live and a hdd offer.

People saying that GTA will be gimped on PS3 is like saying Oblivion was gimped after Shivering Isles came out. Grow up. GTA will be a complete experience on both platforms when it ships. Later, when EXPANSIONS come out you can get them "only" on the 360. That does not mean that GTA has been lessened for release. At any rate it should be interesting to see how much people end up having to pay for the 360 version of GTAIV. I would like to see an official statement from rockstar, in any case, it doesn't matter even if it is true because I've never been one to purchase add ons to the games I play.

I've never been an mmo subscriber, nor do I think in the future I will be. I've made the analogy because it's somewhat like purchasing an incomplete game, and we all know that gta 4 will be a complete game alone. therefore I don't think that people who purchase this game on the ps3 will feel shafted.

Lets see what happens when Rockstar announces GTA 5 will be a PS3 exclusive (mostly due to blu-ray/mandatory HDD) Which has already been hinted at. Notice how they're rushing it out for fall and spring - I have to be thinking now that they're making GTA 5 for 2009 or 2010.

Equal to san andreas and vice city? Its gunna cost a crapload, fill up your Hard drives, I mean if its that big why dont they just make 2 more disks and sell a whole lot more? Who wants their 20gb full? and who wants to download for a whole day? I can't see these being any bigger than 1-2gb, which if that happens they wont be like 'completely new bigger games' like vice and san-andreas were, I mean san-andreas was huuuge. Well all my friends have PS3s, and I'll want to play online with them, so I'll be skipping this for my 360 (no matter how much money MS spends on marketing it for 360).

One more thing, I think GTA is actually very 'casual' gamers type of game (when u consider the massive sales figures) I have friends that didn't play a whole lot else with ps2's, no matter what MS says or Buys, PS2 owners will pick up PS3's for this one and they like the Playstation brand name - and No PS2 owners wont care as much if their friends have 360s, cause they didn't go online much or at all with ps2. They'll never even know about the content, or care about 'downloadable-content' MS should have made 2 separate 'games' not 'content.'

Almost makes me think, MS is trying to get us to open our minds to downloading everything, which will hopefully - to them - open the whole industry to this type of thing (for xbox720). Force us all into this idea by making it the only way to get GTA content. And be a very unpleasant experience the majority of gamers that doesn't have that fast of internet. There were too many holes in your points. For one, EVERY SINGLE PUBLICATION has CONFIRMED DLC for BOTH systems, though the 360 would get a few exclusive missions. THAT'S IT!! And how so many people cannot get that through their heads is beyond me. Rockstar is trying to sell the game on BOTH platforms. It wouldn't make any sense to screw one platform's version over the other if they really wanted to sell both versions. Secondly, the 360's medium cannot hold as much as the PS3's anyway (remember that Blu Ray, the PS3's medium, just won the format war over HDDVD). BR can hold up to 50GB of info (as opposed to 17GBs for a standard dual layer DVD that the 360 uses), so it might just be content that the 360's medium cannot hold, for all we know. Third, who's to say that the PS3 won't get exclusive DLC episodes of their own. Liken this to Soul Caliber 2, where each system had an exclusive character unique to its version. Regardless, we know for a FACT that the PS3 WILL NOT BE SCREWED OUT OF DLC, end of story, PERIOD! And it's nowhere NEAR what you're claiming was told.

Plus, the rest of your bullet points are with holes anyway. For one, the "red ring of death" problems are still adamant (according to SquareTrade, 16.4% of all 360's will fail). Two, holiday sales were better than expected? If they actually said that, I would advise them to look at the recorded sales of the PS3 outselling them (even moreso in January). Third, there was no record of the lack of staff also being at fault for the XBOX Live issues or the lawsuit that was going on? As bloggers, aren't you supposed to at least bring it up (which it doesn't look like you did)? Oh, and the first bullet about DRM was contradicted by the very next one. Finally, yeah, the 360 is a game system first, and they don't care about Blu-Ray. Is that why they quickly came out and said something right after HD-DVD's death to say that it wouldn't affect the 360? And is that why rumors are coming out AGAIN about a BR add on to be available this May (and this was X-Play that JUST talked about this rumor today on G4)?

All one had to do was to just look at the facts to see that your bullet points were truly BS. Just to get some hurdles out of the way. Yes the 360 will have to the definite GTAIV Experience.

However you expect Rockstar to make the DLCs on par with 3-4 year projects? That is so beyond believability that it is sick. At this time in gaming history the gaming industry is one thing above all, it's a business, a big business. Considering now that the gaming industry is the biggest entertainment industry in the world, you are expecting one of the biggest developers on the market to spend 3 years of their time (which is worth millions of dollars) to make downloadable content that may or may not be profitable? Especially when considering the disadvantage they are put in by only making it available to one side of the market. Not to mention the fact that the 360 does not have an HDD on every SKU which means we are talking below the entire 360 install base.

I don't doubt that the DLC will be great, I mean we are talking Rockstar here. But I don't think we will be seeing anything much bigger than some sidequest storylines worth a couple of hours each. I was quite surprised to hear rockstar were even doing DLC considering the GTA franchise has, ever since gta3, been all about making huge games and huge headways in the sandbox game genre. These are things that DLC just cannot offer. If anything I think I was a bit disapointed, as this DLC stupidity only means that we have to wait longer and even possibly for a limited next installment GTA.

Again for the record I am not arguing against the 360 version being more definite, but I feel that both sides are trying to justify for something I just cannot fathom. I wouldn't be surprised to know that MS were actually toting this stuff, but I would not ever put this besides rockstar for a million bucks, as it's just bad business.

For one, I don't think this guy would've been at this blogger breakfast, since, you know, this is for bloggers who have actually impacted the gaming scene somehow (in other words, that people usually visit). Googling this idiots name only brings this bit BS up.

Two, even when trying to make it clear what he meant, he still fails. For one, we have already seen game publication confirm otherwise about DLC availability. It's TWO EPISODIC CONTENT (missions according to a few UK publications) that the 360 will get exclusively. In NO WAY WHATSOEVER did anyone state otherwise. Both consoles will have DLC (if people would just dig into the story or actually go do research instead of b#tching one way or the other about what this guy who had never even been HEARD of until THIS came out has said, they would find that out). Two, has anyone even READ his other bullet points about the RROD or about the reason servers went down on XBL during the holiday season? If they really think the things that were quoted as being said, then we would REALLY need to check every head of every 360 staff member, because they have never seen any of the recent stories from Gamepro or IGN. Also, just because he threw in names of MS officials don't make ANYTHING true. If these guys are like anyone in the corporate world in their position, then I couldn't imagine their names being top-secret or classified or anything like that. Basically put, this guy could've really been sneaky and just put names of people to make you believe him.

Finally, I actually searched this "Blogger Breakfast" thing. Yes, there was one at GDC. With that being said, no one mentioned this stuff about GTA4. Now, if this were true, do you think that (and G4 was at this GDC event, too, and NOTHING came out of that about these things) this issue would have much more legs to run on than it does right now? People would be ALL OVER THIS THING? Plus, given how people would be lawsuit happy, I would thing Sony would have a damn good case at that point to go after Microsoft for an anti-trust suit for doing some backdoor thing in order to have an unfair advantage over them (whether they'd win that is another story, but a strong case they would have). Knowing how MS has had some problems with anti-trust issues in the past, I don't think they would push it, as this would be nothing like, say, buying Epic Games. It would be a disaster waiting to happen, from the anti-trust suits that would pile up to Rockstar losing a TON of money on the PS3 version (which would be half their sales anyway) to disgruntled gamers wanting to behead anyone that made THAT decision, and I could go on and on (trust me, I follow stuff like this. I know what Sony could do if THAT would to be true). Follow that up with the BS that Jack Thompson is STILL having about the game and any "lightning-rod" issue that they will obviously get upon release, and you can see why no one should believe that they would do that kind of backdoor thing (which is what it looks like it would from this guy's blog, because this was never OFFICIALLY announced at any press conference, release, or whatever).

Again, can anyone that is whining PLEASE just research this, just have some COMMON SENSE and look beyond what this guy is telling you. Nothing like this has ever popped up until now, and if it did, this would be ALL OVER THE PLACE BY NOW!! IGN, G4, Gamepro, EGM, everyone would be right on that pony, and Sony would be able to sue the crap out of anyone responsible. Plus, it was confirmed that the PS3 would get DLC content anyway, so there you go.
