The Dallas Morning News on Saturday, January 5, by Victor Godinez:

"Who's ready to start talking about the next Xbox?

Yeah, I know, it sounds idiotic – didn't the 360 just come out? But one glance at a calendar suggests it won't be long before we start hearing all sorts of tidbits about the Xbox 720.

After all, the original Xbox came out in the fall of 2001.

The Xbox 360 was released in 2005.

Repeating that four-year lifespan, the 720 (or whatever it ends up being called) should come out, um, let's see, next year!"

You heard wrong or you are making up BULLSHIT.

MSFT is just now focused on Multi core development and just now have hired some Multi threading GuRu to help devs take advantage of the 360's capabilites. Geometry Wars for XBL arcade uses three cores Gears of War USed two threads=one core point being Devs are just starting to learn Multi threading.

Games like Project Offset and Alan Wake more fully uses the 360's threads thats why they're leaps ahead of average games(wiki them).

MSFT said they're going to keep the 360 on the market much longer before they launch a new console I guess we'll be hearing all kinds of BULLSHIT(Sonyfanboys talking sh*t because of Warner Brothers) untill MSFT's upcomming shows where they will focus the attention on something else.

I'm guessing all kinds of BULLShiT will be talked about derived from HD-DVD's loss. lol

Most companies will plan for the Next console after the the current one is launched but bias and hate will spawn fiction and theories that garner hits to websites.

4.2 - If I had to put my money down on anything...

I would have to say that Bill Gates will be making some announcement regarding services to Live. But it'll probably be something a long the lines Movie downloads and how they want to push this type of services forward.
It looks more and more like MS are trying to do the Console as a media HUB thing like what Sony have been doing.
My second guess would be Announcements for the next gen of Xbox, It'll be a few years away, but by releasing information about the next gen now they can build expectations now and start getting Dev on now so that things will be ready when it does come out in a few years time.
3rd would be the new model Xbox 360, but thats looking unlikely now.
Other things they might want to show off is the motion detection.

Digital distribtution is far from near. More then 3/4 of the world cannot download movies and games. Average speed is 700ish mpbs of interenet users. Also millions of people are still under download limit. How can you download a 25 GB Movie if your speed 2mpbs and 12 GB download?

Also Digital Distribution mainstream? Hail Piracy! If you love digital distrubtion so much you can download your beloved Halo 3 off torrents!

Ever heard about HD Xvid? It might not be 1080p, but 720p seems good enough for most movie watchers (not videophiles perhaps but they are a niche crowd) and does not take up as much space as Blu-ray.

I'm more of a Playstation fan, but I don't see why MS need to panic about the 360 just yet. They have done well to become a big contender in the console market this round compared to how things went with the Xbox....but thats where they learned from their mistakes.
MS just need to keep things steady and keep making games and I'm sure they'll still keep a good share of the market. the head start really did help them, and it will take a while for the PS3 to catch up at current rates
The biggest worry for the 360 is that MS don't shot them selves in the foot by pushing new services like the movie downloads. Stuff that MS really want to corner the market on by using the success of the Xbox and in doing so, taking attention away from games and ignoring the hardcore gamer and trying to hard to force the market in one direction and alienating the average customer who would rather buy a DVD or BlueRay disk, rather than be forced a service where they have to download it and a lot of people either can't be bothered to use or don't know how to use it.

Has a great library of games and I'm looking to forward to seeing bigger and better games on the system in the future.

13 - Sony never was a big problem for MS, MS can pounce them in there sleep.

What MS is concerned about is the suprise hit with the Wii here in the US and Apple. Apple has a nice little download service going and MS wanted to hit that sweet home market before Apple and it looks as if they have succeded. I will put money down that if MS ancounces a new Xbox, Sony won't be to far behind and they will have to explane why they dumped that 10yr console idea. These new consoles are nothing but striped down PCs and like PCs they can be manufactured at low cost. I have been in the PC buisness now for 13yrs and I see gaming PCs that are the same price as a PS3 ($599) and they beat down the PS3 like a b**ch. When you take in account what EA said about making a standard for games applys here, they will have to because of the everchanging hardware. They will make the games like they are on PC and it's up to your PCs hardware on how it looks and plays.

The xbox is a stripped down PC made from PC componants, but the PS3 is a completely differently designed architecture. This is all well documented if you could be bothered to look.
Bang for buck, theres not PC anywhere in the world that can match a 360 or a PS3, and to suggest otherwise in the face of the overwhelming evidence is complete lunacy. I don't care how long you've worked selling PC's - I've been a game developer for just over 15 years but that doesn't give me a 'hotline to the ultimate truth' either.

That MS will be sketching out a stratagey for their next machine in the background, is a given truth. To announce it now would would be marketting folly of the highest order, and simply ensure that sales of the 360 are significantly reduced. This is an important year for the 360, which needs to maintain the momnentum and market penetration it built so well last year in the face of increasing competition. Announcing the machine is soon to be 'old tech', would certainly be the worst thing they could do (especially given their record of immediately dropping support for their old machines)- they are too savy a company to make such an obvious gaff.

360 will continue to be a viable platform for at least 3 more years and will continue to gain market share through 2008.

I've said all along since X360 would only be around 4 or 5 years and it takes about 2 years from conception to production, expect a new XBox announcement in the next year or so. I just hope they dont abandon all their customers like they did last time. M$ dont seem to be very dedicated to any piece of hardware. Then again if its in their best interest why wouldn't they drop it, since everyone forgave them last time.

What I want to know is will it have a BR in it? Surely they cant go with the old DVD is fine again can they. Do even Bots believe that? Maybe they'll use some kind of flash SD card or something just to not allow Sony a piece of their pie or something petty like that. I guess well see in a couple years.

You knw the gamecube used nintendo discs that where made for them. Even though it could hold 3gb,they could apparently get that up to 7gb. Or so ive bn told.well the space issue for dvd is the ONLY weakness of the 360. M$ and the Xbox 360 will not be affected one bit from loosing HD-DVD. That is the reason M$ made it an add on and not a built in unit. Now they can bring out a Blu-Ray add on if they wanted. The 360 is all about choice. I choose to buy a HD-DVD drive for my Xbox 360 because I got it cheap, now I will turn around and sell it on eBay and wait to see what happens once the dust settles. No lost to me, I had a few good months watching HI-DEF movies and now I will sell it and make a profit and wait for the next deal. If the PS3 has another price drop or three I might pick one up for the Blu-Ray but I will never get rid of my Xbox 360, that would be like cutting off a leg or something.

Either way, Gaming FTW!!!

yes sony is greedy but not nearly as much as M$, at ps3 launch- sony was LOSING money on every console sold- to give the customer great hardware at a reasonable price (for the amount of technology in it) and also at the launch in europe sony reps gave out free sony hdtv's as a thank you for buying the ps3 (yes £2000 hdtv's were being given out to the first 1000 or so people to get a ps3- sony appreciates its customers way more than M$ do)

23.1 - Sony Does not own Bluray.

They are part of a group developing it and you think that group would as no to 16 million + user wanting to buy a Bluray add-on drive for their Xbox 360. I'm LG or Sharp would sell MS the drive.

Sony wouldn't say no to them using Blu-Ray. There are plenty of upcoming developers that can be useful for MS.

As far as the 720/460 or whatever goes if they launch in 2009 they are risking everything. They might be launching two years ahead of both Sony and Nintendo. While it worked for their sencond generation console getting launched a year ahead of the competition. Two years is a bit of a stretch. The system would require good games out of the box. If they are two years ahead of competitition it would give both Sony and Nintendo a chance to make last minute changes before production if needed or wanted to make their console more powerful or better. Sega launched early as well with Dreamcast, but that didn't turn out to suit itself well did it? If Microsoft wants to be smart about thier launch they will launch in 2010 at the earliest.

25 - Golly I'm sure glad that the Dallas post is here to educate us all on what Microsoft is going to do, DUHHHHH

I hate stupid little editors who probably have never played a next gen. game much less own a machine and there already saying maybe the next Xbox will be out in 2009 b/c the original Xbox was....blah blah blah.....

Please pay attention and listen to what Bill Gates and the whole MS team say's about that, in fact there's a soon to be heard worldwide conference going on that will let everyone know their plans.

But, common sence tells that the best is yet to come w/regards to the Xbox 360. My guess, the next X will be around 2011.

One thing you can bet on, Sony's forced Blu Ray will NEVER EVER appear on any Xbox console.
