Rumour: Sales of UT3 for PC stall drastically?

"Seems that in the month of November, only 39,995 units of Unreal Tournament 3 for the PC were sold in the US. The expected number of units to be shifted was 70,000 so to only move half that number is not a good sign.
Crysis on the other hand, which was expected to move just over 68,000 units, ended up with over 86,000 units being shifted. Of course all of these numbers pale in comparison to the console sales, so hopefully with the release of UT3 on the PS3 a few days ago, and a 360 release sometime next year, the sales for UT3 will be a lot larger. Christmas could also help to push UT3 PC sales up."

no.. the game isnt selling because epic released a beta product on the PC. i own it, i went out and bought it. i thought i would be getting a complete product, boy was i wrong. They released patch 1.1, maybe the earliest patch they have EVER released. and now they are working on patch 1.2. I just hope they can get UT back to its roots, with all these problems that need fixing. why do you guys think Epic spent so much effort on the PS3 version...its very likely that it will triple the sales of the PC version (or more), and that will still be considered relatively poor sales console wise...the cost of development for big games make PCs the least worthy platform as far as payout...either there aren't that many PC gamers anymore...or there are, but they don't buy games...

the days of record breaking PC sales from the likes of Quake franchises (as well as Unreal) in the past have long since been gone...the online connectivity of every console this generation is not going to help either...

consider why the Xbox brand came along in the first place...MS has seen PC gaming on this decline for a while now...

cuase without them we wont get mod's and Epic wont make their developmental cost's and such. Also they may not feel the need to continue supporting the game with dlc, continued patchs and such.

I own it for PS3 as well, but Im really hoping the pc sales pick up. its better for everybody in the end.

They should just release the mod tools for the PS3, it can support a mouse and keyboard, so I dont see a problem. At this point the PS3 users are at the mercy of PC users and if the game is a total bust on the PC then there goes the great of idea of mods for the PS3.

I don't know. I would guess the mod makers are just a limited number anyway. Sure, there could be this "aha effect", like, "oh look I got an level editor with that game. Lets make some mods", but I think people who do that, know pretty much what they're looking for. Actually, for me that would be the only reason to buy the PC version - the editor. I might not need a ultra fast PC for that and could play the mods on my PS3. (Well, sure, maybe Epic should release the editor on the PS3 BD as well - so there's no need to buy two versions - but then I'd need a BD drive in my Laptop).

I think the reason for the lack of sale of UTIII is bcoz PC gamers seems to be decreasing bcoz of the console. One of the great advantage of PC last gen is its easy online access in comparison with ps2 and xbox. Now all the new gen systems have easy online capability they buy the console version of the game instead of PC. Another factor is Windows Vista. Windows vista has a lot of bugs and people are holding on before they upgrade their pc. Not a lot of people have upgraded their pc and UTIII needs a good graphics card and high ram in able to be played in a medium graphics level. The reason why crysis exceeded its expectation despite the high requirements of this game is because it's been overhyped bcoz of its next generation graphics. People want to see wat it looks like thus increase it sale capability.

In my eyes, PC gaming is dead. There really isnt anything left for the PC market except Blizzard games, RTS games and an occassional FPS game. Other than that most top notch games are released on the consoles.

Sooner or later Blizzard is going to find out how much money could be made on the console side of things and then you can really stick the fork in PC gaming.

Only the hardcore will be left on the PC side of things, because now-a-days people dont want to have to worry about all the stuff they have in their rig because most dont understand it. They just want to buy something and know every game is going to work.

Bingo. PC gamers have very specific needs, and a huge one is open source and mods, because of that the vast majority of PC gamers are still playing Half Life 2 engine games and mods, the ones that are not on Steam are playing the Battlefield series and their mods.

This is the difference between console gamers and PC gamers. Console gamers will shell out $60 a pop for Halo 3 then Bioshock, then the next FPS. Most PC gamers have no interest in this. If Halo 3 was a PC game it would be totally open source, then the PC gamers would use those mod tools to create their own games. Basically with one purchase of an open source game like Half Life 2 or Battlefied they could be playing it for YEARS thanks to an endless supply of user created content...all without paying a single dime.

May very well be true, but that's a curse for publishers looking to bring out games onto the PC platform; sales of new releases suffer because all the PC gamers are still playing their old games! This makes it financially less desirable for publishers to bring new games out to the PC platform.

But at the same time I'm not.

Let's face it. PC gaming is very expensive. It's like you need a new video card and sound card every two months for games to run at their best on the PC.

So when you put a pc orientated game onto a console, it's a cheap (and somewhat effective) alternative for those that can't afford to constantly upgrade their computers.

It's a shame the game isn't doing so well on the computer. But part of it is epic's own fault because they provided the consumer with the cheaper alternative of a ps3 version of the game.

And from what I've seen, the ps3 one must have sold great because lobbies are filled like you wouldn't believe

Despite the hype of the PS3 version the PC UT3 community hardly exist anymore. Most of the fans of this type games are in their 30s or late 20s and have since moved on to CoD 4 or to Steam games. Another factor is the fact that the UT community was never that big to begin with vs the other franchises. Quake/Half Life (they kinda merged) rule the online world, with the Battlefield fanboys in second, coming in at a distant third it's UT2K4...which was basically left to rot by Epic.

This shouldn't be a shock really, by PC standards UT3 wasn't that impressive at all.

15 - My 2 cents...

I have to agree with the people saying you don't have to upgrade your hardware, the games just work. I use my computer to do everything (surf net, run two businesses, day to day house crap, etc.), but no gaming. I love that fact. As a matter of fact i forgot that that was a factor in PC gaming, i stopped PC gaming when the original playstation came out. The only problem i have had was the RRoD on the 360 which happened last month.

Anyone have a thought on this question: If console gaming does get so big it almost, if not all together, wipes out PC gaming, then wouldn't many hardware sales (due to the need to upgrade for newer games) drastically reduce? Not that i care all that much, but could the console maybe eventually end up in the same situation down the line somewhere. I mean you can upgrade the PS3 hard drive for now, but what happens with the next line of consoles that are wonderful because they have all this upgradability. Then the devs start making games that require upgrading to play. Anyone think this will happen?

The console is destined for PC style upgrades in the future. Its not an if, its a when. I fail to see a reason why Sony and MS wouldn't want to make them upgradeable, they just won't be as drastic as the PC.

Just think about all the money Sony and MS can squeeze outta their fanboys. Want to make Halo 4 on your RROD Box 2010 run in true 1080p @ 60fps so you can play 64 players with zero lag? Well buy this official Nvidia Heatbomb Gfx expansion card! Halo 4 will run fine on stock RROD Boxes of course, but without the addon card it'll only support 32 players and no 16X AA etc etc etc...

Considering the fact that they don't make jack from selling console themselves, the temptation to make a buck through premium upgrades is just too much resist.

Actually, if you look at the trend of the whole history of console hardware, the inclination has been to get AWAY from hardware upgrades. There were many add-ons and upgrades for consoles in the past released by Sega and Nintendo, but these types of things have generally died down in recent generations. 64DD, Sega CD, N64 Expansion Ram, 32x... All these were examples of hardware upgrades that some games REQUIRED to play. But you generally don't see anything like this anymore.

Again, the trend right now is AGAINST console upgrades (with the exception of optional stuff like wireless peripherals and larger harddrives).

My honest believe is, that in 20 to 40 years, the whole IT landscape will look different then it does right now. The huge growth of the industry will cease to exist. It will turn into a SW driven environment where HW will "just be available" but performance will play a minor role.

I think on the PC this will hit earlier then on the consoles. As soon as Quad cores will become mainstream, the development will slow down. The PC market is big, because until now, everybody needed one. But a big part of that market are people upgrading existing PCs. The performance level, however, reaches its max for Joe Average. These people who are not hard core gamers but want to browse the web, write a letter or an email. There is nothing what new HW beyond a Quad Core could do to improve this situation (even Quad Core is an overkill). The mainstream market drives the hard core market thru number of units sold. As soon as the growth slows down, so will the top end. If that really would happen, I would speculate prices will raise again, too.

On the console business this is a complete different story. It was always about a fixed HW unit, high inital costs, but a huge number of sales afterwards. The current transition was a big gamble for everybody involved. And the lack luster sales - and the success of the Wii - show, that performance alone does not sell consoles. Now, these machines have also reached a performance level, where they compete with a pretty decent PC - for a lot less money (and trouble - put disk in and play).

But for another iteration of consoles, this will even be harder. I still see a lot of possibilities in the visual improvement area. The cut scenes in current games (even if "in game" ?) still differ a lot compared to in-game play visuals. So, that said, to really have movie level details in a video game, the performance must increase by a lot (and probably more the 10x). And I could imagine, if reached, this might sell a coming console generation. New control schemes would be another strategy. But, say this would be valid points, what's beyond that point ? What could you improve after those machines would hit the market ? There won't be room for more performance improvements. If 1080p HD panels will be standard like SD TVs now, and the machines can drive these panels thru games which look like movies, what's next ? Even bigger resolution ? Why ? This will happen within 20 years (or even earlier, I am pretty sure - if at all. It might well be, that we are already there).

While a high end PC currently will play visually more appealing games now, the diversity in the PC market will grow and grow. At the same time, the distance between console games and PC games is becoming smaller (considering the number of machines installed which can play those games). With the next console generation I predict, this distance will be zero. Thus killing PC gaming completely - except RTS (unless, someone really releases C&C with mouse support for a console - then this is over there, too). And one more. I can see one more console generation, but not a second one.

I feel really sorry for Epic, it was a mistake to release this game on PC and PS3, considering how poor the software sales are on the system.

There simply is no way this game is going to sell a million copies, Epic will come crawling back to the Xbox 360 for sure now after being burned so badly by PS3 gamers.

Epic want to get the whole game to everyone, and that includes mods because thats a large part of what the game is.
So if you want to blame anyone for this game not selling, blame MS.

nah pc gaming is not dead yet not by a long long shot.......and thr are many factors leading to this claim.....first of all us is not the major pc gaming market europe is....crysis,cod4,the witcher,stalker,cnc3,bioshock all sold very well in europe...u remember when ea said that cnc3 had sold just 128k copies in us in its 1st month.....at that time worldwide sales were more than 1 million... and if u chk the european pc charts ut3 is thr in the top 3 everywhr also they dont consider online sales yesterday i read in some forum that crysis preorders at the ea download store were more than 400,000 and how many copies has it sold at retail???....just 90k(which is not bad at all for a pc game)...but in the case of ut3 the most important problem is that ut3 is the same as ut2004which is a 3 yr old game now....u cant get away with just good graphics these days.....and even tho the xbots can forgive microsoft and bungie for bringing nothing new to the table with halo3,pc gamers are always looking for something new and rightly so......
